High contrast colour bash of yesterday's Lairre sketch. I always imagined that scene to have the light reflect off her backside, filtering down on her through a canopy of trees overhead - and thus casting her face mostly in shadow. That high-contrast idea alone made this colour bash a lot of fun to mess around with.

Attempting to create some kind of chronological release playlisting for the Pleasant Green Universe. Using the release chronology from Wikipedia.

Starting from the beginning, episodes are now mainly available on soundcloud.

Then we move to The Lovecraft Investigations on spotify (also still available on other players if preferred).

Then the two Aldritch Kemp series. Again I'm using Spotify and made my own playlist, but this is still on BBC Sounds etc.

Lovecraftian Influence in ORV

On a sleepy bus ride, a few months ago, I was peacefully listening to the s2 this BBC podcast called The Lovecraft Investigations(the name of s2 is "The Whisperer in Darkness").

It is a mystery thriller/horror fiction podcast created, written and directed by Julian Simpson, based on the modernization of several works of H. P. Lovecraft & presented as a podcast-within-a-podcast in which the two hosts of the Mystery Machine, a true crime podcast investigating cases related to the occult and conspiracy theories.

I was listening to ep6 at that time & some minutes in, the podcast describes a "series of things" that strongly remind me of ORV, all traces of sleepiness gone. (following text snippets have been taken from the Pleasant Green wiki, with some additions by me):

Eleanor explains that Nyarlathotep is supposedly the avatar of Azathoth, an entity that is dreaming the universe into existence. But Azathoth is unaware of this? Nyarlathotep goal is to trick humanity into opening a portal to Azathoth's Dreamlands and let Azathoth enter our reality, an act that would send the human race into collective insanity...

The episode definitely goes into more detail but I'm too lazy to do a transcription now. However, I think this short summary from the ep does race a few flags- entity who dreams the universe into existence? avatar of the entity? HEY THIS IS SIMILAR TO MAD & SECRETIVE PLOTTER.

I tried to find if anyone else on the internet(a common fan of Lovecraft & ORV) had noticed this & I found one, very detailed post on Reddit. This confirmed my suspicion & also fueled my curiosity more- I had to see for myself how deep the links went.

So, I started listening to Mythos, and that's lead me to a theory about Parker.

We know she changes her name based on what magic she's using, but what if she also looks different? What if she's actually some flavor of nonbinary? So, for fire, what if her hair was a bright red gradient that started blue/black out at the roots, then into yellow, then to orange, and to red.

And when we meet Parker Parker (that's what I'm calling them for Lovecraft Investigations), they look like the average of every person on Earth, past or present. The only way you can tell they're the same person is by the voice.

This drabble went trabble or tribble, whatever the term is. Fanlore says it can be both. Anyway- massive thanks, friend. How about I do all three of them?

“Are you…are you trying to flirt with me?” Parker asked, Lairre discerning the meaning of her words more from gestures and the way her mouth moved than anything else. The music was too loud. They were too, but the alcohol both had consumed had a significant effect on them.

"In your dreams, babes." Lairre had half-shouted back at her.

Later that night, after she'd said bye to Marcus and Ness, she found herself struggling to drag a half-drunk Parker down the steps to the tube. It was a nightmare trying to get her to swipe her Oyster card without her pretending she was in some spy flick but somehow, she'd managed.

Eventually, after a turbulent tube ride, they found themselves in Lairre's flat. One thing led to another and well… drunk Parker was a lot louder and loose lipped than she was sober. Lairre herself was much the same, but at least she still put thought to her words. Parker was less so, and flirted blatantly.

“Stop saying things that make me want to kiss you!” Lairre exclaimed. It was a recipe for disaster. She liked Parker. A lot. But getting into bed with her would spell trouble for the rest of their working relationship. She didn't want to compromise that. None of it. Still, they were seated pretty close together, and she could feel Parker's breath on her cheek.

Of course, through pink-tinted glasses, Parker took her comment for permission and leaned in, bridging the gap. The witch's hands tangled in her hair. The kiss itself was a bit sloppy and she could taste the alcohol on her lips but Lairre's stomach flipped, and she found herself kissing back with abandon.

Lairre couldn't help but laugh when they parted. “You’re completely ridiculous. I can’t believe I find you attractive.”

thinking about how the greens are so conquerors-coded. obviously aegon ii has those parallels to aegon i, a terrible legacy and expectation of fire and blood, but helaena also has parallels with rhaenys as a queen who’s considered a softer counterpart to her husband and beloved by the smallfolk.

then there’s aemond. possibly the most visenya-coded targ since the woman herself. he has her dragon, her penchant for war crimes, her commitment to her duty, potentially also her black magic depending on what the truth of his relationship with alys is — but i think the way he’s most like visenya is in his relationship with his siblings, especially aegon. he really is aegon’s visenya — his sullen, sometimes disagreeable protector. his sword will always fall on aegon’s side. he saves him at rook’s rest, rules the country in his stead and doesn’t try to take it, eventually dies trying to secure his crown. say what you will about aegon and aemond’s relationship, i think at the heart of it he has visenya-like devotion and duty.
