Yesterday I successfully defended my #dissertation examining the “social facts” of COVID-19. Here’s me headed to the defense rocking my CAN99 and walker 😷🚶🏼‍♀️ #IMaskBecause as a scientist who studies #Covid, I signed up to defend my diss, but I didn’t agree to die for it. #PhDone pic.twitter.com/OZGL469jnG

The doctor is in, or AHHHHHH!!!!
Tumblr media
Well, it’s official. I mean it’s TECHNICALLY been official for alike two weeks now, but I made it! So why the delay in making this post? I can explain, it’s been a rush… what else is new? But I almost didn’t make it, almost. So now I’m done and I’ve got to figure out what to do next. There’s a lot of “what ifs” going on right now, so there’s a lot to talk about and I already have half a dozen or…

Actual photo of me finishing…. Well we did it. Go team! I was semi-officially awarded my PhD (I need some signatures to make it official, official). But it’s not the end, not quite. There’s still some work to be done and I want to make sure I hit all the boxes. In the Marines we always ended hard training with a strong finish, I’m hoping to channel some of that into the end of this journey. So a…

Day Twenty-Nine /// NaPoWri----NO
DAY TWENTY-NINE!!
Suddenly find myself back into disbelief that the end I've been running towards with such determination is nearly upon me.
[Seems familiar - feels exactly like what I did with my doctorate. Pushed and rushed and rushed and chomped and jumped. And then a little startled to find myself through and PHDone. ]
Feature journal is On the Seawall and I have again swerved towards looking at their most recent published poems-and-other-articles.
I mention the other articles because what drew me this time really wasn't a poem - at least, I didn't think it would be a poem - but it turned out to be an immensely poem-ish kind of an essay <3
It's a slightly fractured/fragmentary meditation around how humans relate to animals in relation to ourselves, riffing on the Creation myth activity in which Adam is invited to name the animals.
"How naming animals caused what may have been a first act of poetics.
A creative attempt to create the use of animals in creating creative thinking."
And -
"In the long memory of recorded time — the thought process of poetics was first among us as causeway over the unstable waters of our existence."
I wasn't familiar with the writer, Diane Glancy (shame on me, as it turns out - she's award-winning and pretty high profile). Given the various controversies about claiming of Indigenous (/or other marginalized) status, I thought I'd better try to check a little.
I did come across one protest tweet, refusing her as Cherokee (I imagine there's more - that's the one I came across) but at least it wasn't an absolute deluge... and I also came across this article from Nov 2017, itself in large part sampling an earlier piece from 2015.
This is what she says about her background there -
Diane Glancy is a teacher, poet, author and playwright. She was born in 1941 in Kansas City, Missouri, to a Cherokee father and an English/German mother.
Early in her life, she chose to identify as a Cherokee Native American, accepting the consequences and struggles inherent in claiming a Native American heritage.
She says that her father’s Cherokee heritage “has been the most important influence I’ve had. It’s odd. It’s also been the most discouraging, shameful, and has caused more trouble, as I am an undocumented Cherokee, which brings criticism from some people.”

After more years than I would like to admit, I am officially Ph.Done! I defended last week and it was a privilege to dedicate this (very imperfect, but nevertheless complete) dissertation to my dad, who died while I was 3/4 of the way through.
