AYYYY UNDERRATED VARPUNEN FAM TIME LESGOOO. I'm thinking I'll try to say one positive and one negative but I won't force it if it stalls me
P - Negative: See she was born into a warrior family (aka she's the beast variety of demon), which in itself was just not the right lifestyle for her personally. Real stressful. I could pick probably multiple experiences from here but let's highlight the string of clashes between a Plague from those days who ended up killing and injuring several beasts. There are still two living Villagers that bear the scars from this time. P, however, bears the mental scars of having one or her co apprentices and teachers murdered. She has survivors guilt and various other kinds of guilt from this and suffered a bad freeze reaction that has stayed with her for a while.. The victims weren't even super close to her, but it was the sheer horror of the fact that anyone could just die (and in her mind, it'd be her fault bc she failed to help them).
As a bonus, btw, the plague involved in these events is dead nowadays. Please, do take a guess as to how.
Positive: One time, P and Nan were left home alone together for roughly a week, and since P mostly didn't interact with Nan aside from what she deemed necessary, things got quiet and awkward for a bit.. P was honestly scared, bc she had the fear that this was some kind of test from their husband - one she could fail miserably, somehow, so she remained on her tiptoes the whole time. He said he'd be off on a business trip and as the author I can verify this is actually true, and it wasn't a test, but unfortunately Ps mental state was... Not good. Thanks to him. A few days in, Nan approaches P carefully and tells her that it's okay if she doesn't know what to say, and if she needs her alone time. But if she did want to hang out, or talk, or anything, Nan would be here listening, no pressure to come up with anything special. See Nan had thought that the avoidance had more to do with Ps social anxiety and being a very withdrawn person, rather than paranoia over their husband. Although I won't deny she had a hunch..
Either way, this left a very positive impression on P, and she found some kind of strength in the fact that maybe, just maybe, if things get bad enough, she can lean on Nan. That, and she decided then and there to try her best to treat nan better and try to approach her on her terms. It didn't end up happening too much (not enough in her eyes), but it did still happen.
Sighs lovingly. P deserves way more attention imo. I did not hold back from rambling. Anyways!
Pesticinger - Negative: (TW TORTURE FEEL FREE TO SKIP) So it's widely known she's unpopular amongst humans for obvious reasons, so they often plot various things to get back at her, and often try to even capture or kill it. So there's this waterfall. A group of humans really want Pesticinger to have her "comeuppance" for what she's put them through. So this waterfall. They've set a trap there, where there's a rope that ties into a noose when released, and it hangs under the rushing water. Pesticinger is lured into this trap, and here's the situation: she's got a noose around her throat, and it tightens the further you pull on it. If she gets swept up by the water's pull, it starts choking her, combined with the water trying to pull her under. So she has to literally constantly fight the water, or she suffocates (either by drowning, or noose). It is not a good time. Her feathers get soaked the hell out so flying becomes difficult, she's quickly exhausted and it's kinda hard to call for help when you're trying to fight suffocation. She was rescued, of course. Poor bird. But she can barely even look at a noose, and the noise of waterfalls gives her anxiety. So do ropes, if they're put anywhere near her body.
This next memory I'm not sure if I'd label it necessarily either strictly positive or negative but it was very impactful for her. See Pesticinger has the mental capacity to get really, really introspective and existential, but the way her brain works, also sometimes leads it to tie itself into knots and leads her down dead ends she can't think herself out of. So it can definitely overwhelm itself by overthinking. When she was still very young, in one of these cases, she came to speak to her creator henself; the Mistress. It asked many panicked, disjointed questions, trying to untangle it's mind, and getting distressed, it started knocking at it's head with it's foot. The Mistress, gently, places hens hand on Pesticingers face to block the hits, and they share silent eye contact for a moment.
"Dear bird.. You don't have to know all the answers. You might, someday, but you don't need to. You are more than just a bird, or a beast; you are a force of nature. Even still, you can be as ordinary as you want. Just don't forget yourself."
Pesticinger still feels.. Bittersweet, about it. She's frustrated that she didn't get the answers, in fact the denial of them entirely upset her back then. But she can't say it wasn't also comforting. The reason this memory isn't purely positive is mainly due to Pesticingers mindset.
I think I'll cap this post here BUT BEFORE I DO I'll include just a little something from Nan bc. My number one Varpunen fam for sure. It'll be under the cut
I'll be vague bc I was actually writing a whole thing about this and it's still kinda in progress. But.
Something that's really stuck with Nan was when she, at one point, took her kids to see their grandpa, aka Nans father. He knew there were kids, but hadn't met them due to life just sweeping everyone up for a while.
He did not react well to seeing them. Their visit became very short and very uncomfortable. Nan had to have a talk with her father privately, (His name is Yngve Surström, btw) while the kids awkwardly waited outside.
This would become the last time Nan sees her father before he disappeared completely. Nobody knows why. Or how.

Siru tries to gather more about Pesticinger without it knowing. Things she'd rather hear from other perspectives - other opinions. Other details..
An elderly field guard shakes her head at Siru. "You shan't be asking about things like these, fledgling", the old grouse craws. "Knowledge helps ward off danger that ignorance attracts.." responds Siru, and gets somewhere. The old grouse insists that the common courtesy is to stay silent in the presence of this plague. To not address it, nor respond to it. Silent treatment altogether, and preferably, stay far away. This is how field guards typically operate with plagues - don't entertain, don't engage. Siru nods. Someone who avoids Pesticinger like the- well.. You know.. Can't know too much about her. Siru moves on.
A lowly scavenger, a crow villager with the voice of a gull, takes her up on her questions much better. It's best to ask people who Siru couldn't be traced back with - so frequents and familiar faces are out of the question. The gull voiced rogue posits that a screaming match is the most efficient way to deal with Pesticinger. Make it loud loud loud, and it can't steal your voice. Do not stop talking. That would let it steal. Very opposite advice to the previous one, Siru thinks, and stops to wonder which source is the more reliable one. The scavenger asks for goods in exchange for more information, and Siru has nothing more than fox bread to offer. It earns her one last tip: Never volunteer any new or useful words to the plague. Repeat back nonsense only.
Siru's search grows wider.
She spots a giant grasshopper in the far fields, leading to Maggots den. It plays it's violin - a scratchy, wandering tune. And it sings of humans. A musician must be more knowledgeable about someone like the white winged bird. Siru seats by a rock near the grasshopper, offering herself as audience. She begins to listen of a singing tale that speaks of insect hordes - Something the composer itself has little interest in participating. It tells tales of Pesticinger offering grubs of all kinds a residence inside the ear canals of humans. They would feed there, until they're full enough to cocoon, and the humans drive themselves mad trying to claw the grubs out. Mad, and notably deaf. The grasshopper sings a tale of Pesticinger, with her grandiose Orchestra of songbirds, keeping entire human towns awake, night in and night out, with their ceaseless singing. They've become more hesitant of this practice upon discovering the humans have their own noisy tools to counter: they call these guns.
Siru wants to ask of Pesticinger more after the show, but the huffy grasshopper asks for a tip in exchange for it's music. Siru, unsure what else to give, teaches the grasshopper a rhyme, staying shut about who she first learned it from (You might already guess).
She heads home, late.
Passing the far ends of the village, she is startled by the sudden passing of white wings above her head, but not to worry. It is the local stork, an assistant of one of the plagues, and true to myth, carrying a bundle in its beak. Siru levels her breathing, and asks has the stork seen any other big white birds around lately. The stork recounts Pesticinger serenading it this past spring - complimenting it's delivery work. The stork, earnest, offered to work for Pesticinger as well, though she seemed less enthused by this. The stork, confused, wonders outloud why she would request it's company, if not for chicks. Siru is a little taken aback to learn something like this about Pesticinger, but figures whatever bird play it might have is probably none of her business. Siru respectfully bows out of the conversation, especially seeing as the small bundle the stork carries, starts chirping.
Siru only feels slightly more informed by the end of the day.

Explaining this scene (from here)
Tumblr media
Will mention mouth and throat inflicted violence and dissection. Also will get (slightly) more in detail about what's happening between these two
Context: Pesticinger has Siru come to her neck of the woods at night to perform certain rituals. It claims these are for ~Learning Purposes~ (which they are, in a way). This is related to that thing about folks wanting to learn and gain powers from Pesticinger. Siru's motives for being here, well.. I'll get into it later.
This exchange you see depicted, happens after Siru has cut out the tongue and/or vocal chords off of several animals (which includes birds. This is a crucial bit of info). Before this she also had to catch several of them with occasional help from Pesticinger, so she's a little tired, on top of it being quite a uh. Let's say emotionally challenging? Task? Especially seeing as how she also had to eat said body parts raw after cutting them out..
She's a country girl, she'll manage..
Tumblr media
Despite the initial ick, Siru performed all this like a champ! At least compared to alot of humans Pesticinger has initiated into similar activities. This is what prompts the above "She's good at games! Bold, very bold she is!", which is genuine compliments given the situation.
So while Siru did All That™, Pesticinger hopped circles around her, chanting songs and urging her on (is it encouragement or pressuring...? I would say it's both.)
Considering the unpleasant tasks she's had to do, while it simply sang and watched, Siru feels it's appropriate to poke at Pesticinger a little. She has a very deadpan delivery and morbid sense of humor, which is why Pesticinger here is depicted as being taken aback and even unsure whether or not Siru is joking at first. These two have quite contrasting presentations and speech mannerisms.
What did Siru say?
She pulled a little "So, I'm guessing it's your turn next, right? I mean I've been building up with these small creatures so the grande finale's next, and that would mean.. You."
(you can see in the drawing, she's lazily pointing at Pesticinger)
I'm paraphrasing, but she essentially implied that to take it to the next level, she should now also cut out Pesticingers tongue and vocal chords, and eat them. Which, Pesticinger was not prepared for. This is supposed to be an initiation progress, and breaking previous limits Pesticingers followers might've had, in order to bring them in deep. In terms of gaining special abilities, this does ofc contribute to that, but lemme just say, Pesticinger losing her vocal components would be a huge blow.
Let me put it into perspective. People ordinarily do not hear Pesticingers speaking voice. When she sings yes, but when speaking normally, it looks like she's just moving her mouth elaborately. If she's not singing, or stealing somebody else's voice, Pesticinger is like watching a silent film irl. She has no voice of her own.
The other Plagues can hear her speech, and so can Pesti's followers, and most people who've heard her special song before. Not everyone, though. It tends to be a special occurrence, bc if someone can hear her speech it tends to mean something is a little wrong.. (ykno, how cursed songs are)
Siru could always hear it's speech, and that's likely due to her carrying some.. (glances at my previous post) supernatural after effects.
Siru eventually broke face and chuckled it away, but Pesticinger, in all honesty, remains a little unsettled by the suggestion. She doesn't let it show of course. Not to Siru, especially.
But, yeah. Maybe a bit of a power move to joke about inflicting it on the scary entity next, who's trying to break your limits by making you do disturbing rituals. As you do

One night, Siru isn't quite feeling it. This one night she didn't sleep well enough, before Pesticinger summoned her from her home, flew her out to the distant woods, and had her vivisect a bird. She was going along with it - what else would she do.
But really.
She does these gross out rituals for it. She finds and brings her items. She trains her voice sore during their little band practice.
I know I got into this basically out of boredom and an inescapable need to numb the pain - Siru thinks. But really, what's in it for me. What is the follower of the plague supposed to get from this.
"When are you giving me something?" she asks, bluntly. The bird perks, tilting her head stupidly. "What am I doing this all For? What should I be getting out of this? What are you supposed to give me in return?" Siru elaborates, giving Pesticinger a bunch more words than the first sentence. It coos thoughtfully, not really saying much.
The knife Siru always uses is still in her hand.
Her black patterns start spreading, turning her a night-dark color, as a pulse of rage flows through her. She yells at Pesticinger. She curses out her life. It's alot of anger and not alot of blame that Pesticinger really deserves. Siru knows this, but fuck if she isn't good at keeping everything in until she explodes at her loved ones.
Not counting the plague as a loved one, of course, but the point still stands. The bird tries to give her words in return for hers - Siru rarely talks this much at once! Pesticinger feels it fair to give her many words in exchange. But Siru doesn't listen to it, for once. Now she's the one talking.
Unfortunately so, because whenever she says too much, she ends up regretting alot of it. That's why she doesn't talk much. She either says bad things, or worthless things.
Siru growls, and tosses the knife at Pesticinger, scaring it off. The plague takes flight, and in a heavy gust of air, she disappears into the night.
.. Great. Another interpersonal relationship wasted. She already feels guilty.
Is she really mad at Pesticinger, or is she just tired? Does she really want something out of the plague, or does she just wish she was better. Wish she didn't need the company of a monster. Wish she felt like remotely good company to said monster.
She walks home. It's very early when she gets there, and her mother is leaving for work. She's worried, and Siru says nothing to her. Nan dutifully helps her to bed. Knowing her concerns won't be answered. Siru hates herself for it. But she'd ruin even more things by telling her mother everything.
I can't believe it - she thinks. Did I really scare off A Plague? What kind of monster must I be?
Well. At least I won't have to spend nights up doing horrors anymore..
She sleeps until the next midnight.
She wakes up abruptly to the sound of something on her window. She jolts up, praying to the mistress her mom doesn't hear it. She follows the sound outside, all the way to the edges of the village. Pesticinger stands there with a bag in her beak. Siru is.. A bit shocked, to see her again.
"Listen, I'm.. I'm sorry, I just.. I feel like nobody really.. Nevermind.." Siru starts, but draws back. Pesticinger drops the bag, and with vigorous head bobs, urges her to speak more. "I listen, yes! I'm listening. Listening now!" she sings, taking a few hops towards Siru. She's.. Taken aback by this. "You feel like nobody listens to you? Do they only take never give? Is that why you're angered like this? You feel so worthless I know, this is what you said to me, but now you should say more. Say say! I listen. I don't hear you speak much. Speak more!" it continues, it's tone urgent and cautious - and maybe, just maybe.. Apologetic?
"What's.. In that bag?" Siru asks, instead.
Pesticinger blinks. "For you! Bag for you! It's givings to you, things for you, for you!" it repeats and blabbers, nudging the bag towards Siru with it's beak vigorously. It jostles to her feet, and Siru.. Still, taken aback, picks it up.
She looks inside, firstly finding the knife she threw earlier - realizing she left it there in the woods. She looks more, finding scarves. They're of fancy material and knit, with patterns, and tussles on some of them.
Oh.. Because she knows I.. Wear head scarfs.
She finds more. There's bones unclear in origin. There's instruments. Mostly flutes and other carriables. There's claws and talons. More sharp weapons. She can easily extrapolate why Pesticinger, a little bird fond of pillaging humans, would pick all these out for her.
Except...
The tie.
"Is this.. Like.. For me to wear? Dressing business casual?" Siru asks the plague. Really, it doesn't look like anything the humans from this realm would wear. It looks.. Futuristic to her. It's beyond fancy too, and made with materials she doesn't immediately recognise her villagers to have.
"If you want, you can wear it! Very stylish, Siru always stylish!" Pesticinger currs in flatteration. But it's not an explanation.
"Where.. Did you get this? Did it.. Belong to someone?"
"Sparrow's other chickling!"
Siru freezes.
"You.. Took this from.. Lassi?"
Pesticinger nods.

Pesticingers voice stealing ability sounds like a great and powerful tool, however so many people notice she doesn't even attempt to sound like the person the voice is from. No mannerisms, speech forms, intonation.. Pesticinger just sounds like itself, except in someone else's vocals. And it's speech mannerisms are recognizable for sure.
Stupid bird, people think.
Pesticinger however does pay more attention than you'd initially think. Does memorize intonation down to the last note. She's very good at that actually - mimics are. What else to do, when she never speaks with her own voice anyway?
In most cases of voice stealing, discounting complete strangers maybe, it can sound extremely identical to the origin of the voice.
She simply chooses not to. More fun that way.
Only very rarely is it about actually needing to use someone's voice to get what she wants. Usually, it's a play of dominance. Mockery. Humiliation, even. It's Play. She showcases her power - in general, and over others, via showing you that she can choose to do fuckall with your voice, she can make you sound like That Stupid Bird, she can sing song in your tongue and you can't do anything about it.
Plus, if you keep up the consensus that all you ever do is use the voice in a silly manner, and give everyone the impression you're not actually good at mimicking, well. It just hits way harder when people do fall for your perfect fake. Can you imagine how satisfying it is. This is what Pesticinger is about. Taking and deconstructing representative parts of things (ykno, like her horde of destroying creatures)

I think Siru would like really large fish and aquatic monsters in general but most of all. Big fish. Idk why I think this so strongly I don't have any detailed logical explanation but I tried thinking about which Pokémon would be Siru's favourites and I thought Whiscash and Dondozo and I felt really strongly about it. So new character trivia dropped i think Siru likes really huge fish.

Pesticinger / Tuholaulaja
[pronounced "Singer" despite the c]
Tumblr media
With ghostly white feathers it moves in the skies, descending upon any place it deems ripe for scavenging. Preferably human inhabited, because they create and produce so much prosperous crop to pillage. You'll hear a light thud - she's not heavy, and get to witness all wings and all of it's tail unravel, chest and throat inflating with an unnatural amount of air in a haunting dance. Once ready, that skull which you thought to be it's face will crack open, and it's jaws will keep opening until you'd think the whole head snaps in half. By then it's too late. Those who are close enough to hear it's earth shattering song will hear nothing else ever again - if they'll hear anything at all after that. If you're still around to witness: hordes of birds, animals, insects, anything considered an unwanted parasite by humans, will flood the area as far as they reach, desecrating and consuming anything they can use for their own benefit. Including living things. Once, or if satisfied, the pest horde will scatter and trace everything they've consumed back to it's very source, and Pesticinger flies off again after a job well done, rising to the skies like an angel of doom, disappearing completely. Hopefully..
It's song is known to have strange effects on anyone hearing it long range - not close enough to rupture your ear drums. The hungry will follow her, the prosperous flee in terror. If you get the chance to speak to her face to face, you'll hear only the softest of whispers escape that mouth. Ones sharing songs, teaching or learning with the monster, will surely lose their humanity, and be opened up to a world of neverending feast and nightmarish lullabies. The daring seek her teaching in hopes to brainwash, impress or deafen others just like it, too, but it most likely will cost you lots.
