Panels from Bone, © Jeff Smith
[Sponsored by @glarnboudin. Bone is a comic series that I remember reading and loving in undergraduate. And the "Stupid Stupid Rat Creatures" were my favorite characters. They pivot from menacing to comical and back on a dime, and have a very distinctive look. Their culture (or lack of it) has some very interesting world building implications, and they're one of the better riffs on the "evil minion species" in fantasy literature that doesn't go for wholesale deconstruction. However, they don't have much in the way of distinctive abilities in the comic. So I had to do some work to ensure that they were mechanically interesting.
A word about the name. In Bone, they are only known as "rat creatures", which says some alarming things if rats are sapient and seven feet tall. The name I went with was suggested by @abominationimperatrix. It's an Eastern European rat-ogre, but information on it in English is super sparse, to the point where different sources disagree whether it's Romanian or Romani.]
Shobolon CR 2 NE Monstrous Humanoid This shaggy, bulky humanoid has wide red eyes and a wide mouth full of sharp teeth. Its ears rise to a sharp point, and it walks on its knuckles.
Shobolons are voracious monsters that tend to live in large numbers. They are larger, stronger and slightly dimmer relatives of ratfolk, although the two species rarely interact on friendly terms. Their endonym is rarely spoken—most people just refer to shobolons as “rat-creatures”. Shobolons are omnivorous, but greatly prefer meat, and they don’t particularly care if their meat comes from sapient sources. They tend to fight from ambush, using their skill at climbing, swimming and squeezing into tight spaces to attack from unusual angles. They are fond of using the Intimidate skill to demoralize their foes, screeching hideously before moving to set up flanking positions or retreat from a losing battle.
Most shobolons engage in dramatic body modification. Their long scaly tails are docked shortly after birth (shobolon legends tell of these tails being used as handles by a wrestling demigod who humiliated them in the past), and their ears are cropped upon reaching adulthood in order to grant them a more threatening appearance. Shobolons do not have names of their own unless granted by a member of another species, or by their rulers as a reward for meritorious service. Despite their foolishness and lack of material culture, shobolons tend to be erudite, and like using long words in order to sound smarter (“hello, small mammal” is a common greeting/threat). Shobolons tend towards religion, and different hordes often venerate different gods or powerful fiends. Shobolons universally fear and hate dragons.
Shobolon Rulers Shobolons are very long lived, and display indeterminate growth. One that lives for hundreds of years and feeds well may grow to immense size and power. This growth is somewhat disproportionate, as their arms do not grow to scale with the rest of their bodies. A shobolon ruler often uses titles like King or Queen, regardless of how many shobolons they rule over. Such creatures are Large in size with 12 racial HD. A shobolon ruler has improved grab and swallow whole with its bite attack, gains frightful presence as a special attack and has undersized weapons as an SQ. A shobolon ruler is at least a CR 8 creature—many of them have levels in fighter or cleric beyond their racial HD.

An opponent intimidated by a shobolon cannot make attacks of opportunity as long as it suffers from a fear effect. [Information regarding the visual stylization and anthropomorphization in my OC world/story in development 'circusworld']
The "animals" in circusworld are all people. They are drawn as anthropomorphic animals for stylistic and symbolic purposes. Any species may exist, but I tend to prefer to draw my favorite animals or the animals which are most symbolically important to me. So while birds, reptiles, fish, and insects exist in their world, you are more likely to see lions and zebras as the main characters. They should all be drawn with human bodies and limbs, including plantigrade legs/feet, with the exception of ungulates which may be given ungulate feet. Insect species may have wings on their backs. Bird and bat species may have wings either on their backs or as extensions of their fingers. Their hands are humanlike with the exception of paw pads and claws for mammals, and the aforementioned avian species. Their heads should have humanlike foreheads, brow ridges/eyebrows, and eyes, but they may have animalistic noses and mouths. They have hair on their heads. They have animal ears and tails. For all intents and purposes, they are "humans," but artistically, they are "animals" who are undoubtedly people.
They may have flat chests or defined chests, including through transitional surgery. Nipples are not drawn. Lower genitalia is not drawn. Both of these features technically do exist in their world for reproductive/child raising purposes, but it is not the focus of the story and is not necessary to illustrate them. They may have body hair in addition to the fur/feathers/skin/scales on their bodies. They do not necessarily feel the need to wear clothes. Many of them do, for various reasons. Clothes may be physically necessary for warmth, protection, or as a uniform. Some clothes are worn simply for fun or fashion. Many circus characters enjoy clothing as costume.
Feral animals exist in their universe and appear and behave exactly as they do in our universe. They cannot talk, and they are kept as pets and used as livestock. It is not seen as weird for an animal person to own a feral animal pet, because animal people are entirely separate beings from feral animals.
Essentially, animal people are just people. Thus, their species is not often commented on by other animal people, and is often entirely irrelevant to their lives. There is no species discrimination or predation amongst animal people, although certain animal people species may have more of a taste for feral animal meat than others. In addition, some species behaviors may be adapted into personality or lifestyle traits, such as a sea lion enjoying swimming. However, a cat could enjoy swimming just as much. Animals of all different lifestyles and personalities exist.
Animal species are often used to symbolize different traits that we humans attribute to animals. For example, a lion symbolizes bravery/courage, devotion to a group/family, and physical strength. As such, a lion character may embody these themes more heavily. In the case of zebras, they are used specifically because of their symbolic meaning as a representation for under-diagnosed/rare medical conditions, and zebra characters are likely to be used to explore concepts related to illness and disability.
In conclusion: I am a furry artist above all else. I thrive when I am making furry art. I love the creative freedom and opportunity to explore symbolism that is inherent to furry art. I do not think I could tell a story or create a world that I was satisfied with if all of the characters were humans, because of the way my brain thinks in colors and symbols like this. But with this project specifically, the characters are just people who happen to be animals.

@queerscout YOU'RE RIGHT THOUGH its so funny seeing the different vibes from the mammal keeper groups vs weirdos with tanks. Mammal keepers are like the best traits of horse girls but nerdier and I think the difference I note is the Weirdos with Tanks tend to fixate on specific animals or systems more than the job itself? Like we have the coral people, the shark people, the jellyfish people, and there's some overlap but it's the difference between having a general reef tattoo or shark necklace (or in my case my favorite Stony Boi coral sticker) vs having a license plate that says "zookpr."

Few people load a dishwasher as well as I do.
I get it full (so efficient!), but not so much that plates crowd each other and fight for that that cleansing water. Cups and glasses never overturn and end the cycle full of water and a little crud in the bottom. My coffee mugs with an ever-so-sleight concave bottom get angled into the wire rack so they don't retain even a few drops of water when the job is done.
Last night Sheila made Butter Chicken. It's my favorite dish that she cooks. The recipe requires two Instant Pot pots. One is for rice, the other for the chicken and sauce.
I'm getting hungry for some Butter Chicken just writing this.
When she was done I went in to clean up. It was like the Bat Signal appeared. Except instead of a winged mammal on the clouds it's just a boring block of stainless steel. Doesn't matter, I know I'm needed.
Items in the narrow top rack for utensils got lined up like a tray of medical instruments waiting for a life-saving operation. Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to efficiently load the dishwasher AND have it look neat and organized.
The middle rack was neat and orderly, like soldiers in a parade. I do tend to keep similar items next to each other because I like that look (but I'm not OCD).
Then there was the bottom rack and those two Instant Pot pots. I could not get the second one to fit in a way that it wouldn't interfere with the spinning arm above.
Sheila watched quietly as I struggled. I wanted to send her out of the kitchen so I could concentrate. Finally she said, "Try this." She moved one thing, twisted something else, and tapped that second pot gently. It dropped into place nicely.
That was humbling. I still got to have some Butter Chicken.

Doraemon Long Stories Vol. 1: Nobita's Dinosaur
Tumblr media
Continuing my mission to (re)read all the Fujio-authored Doraemon works, it's time for the Doraemon Long Stories. This series was the basis for the Doraemon movies released in 1980–1997 (with the exception of The Record of Nobita's Parallel Visit to the West).
Given that I've already reviewed all the movies and they generally differ from their manga counterparts in only minor details, I was originally going to cover multiple Doraemon Long Stories volumes in each post, but I ended up having more to say about the manga than I anticipated, so I guess you're getting at least 17 more separate Doraemon posts. All of my followers are thrilled, I'm sure.
May contain spoilers below the break. My review of this story's movie adaptations can be found here.
Without a doubt, this is among the best-known Doraemon stories, and probably a sizable number of people who grew up with the franchise would name it as one of their favorites. As mentioned in my review of the movie adaptations, I generally think it's... decent. One of the reasons I'm not quite as enamored with this story as many others seem to be is the fact that it being the first attempt at a long-form Doraemon narrative really shows, not only from the perspective of the author but also for the characters.
Unlike many of the later entries in this series, the main characters don't set out with the intention of going on an adventure, and instead get stranded in the Cretaceous by accident. The story has to go the extra mile to come up with explanations for why some of Doraemon's most commonly used gadgets wouldn't solve the problem in this situation. The villains are defeated primarily through a combination of luck and plot-induced stupidity. None of these things would automatically ruin a story (tropes are tools, after all), but I've always thought the many of the later Doraemon Long Stories would integrate the adventure components in more natural and satisfying ways.
As far as differences between the manga and anime go, I was surprised by the number of "intimate" moments there were between Nobita and Shizuka in the manga. I tend to be under the impression that the anime likes to milk this element more than the manga, but neither of the movie adaptations had these scenes! Maybe the author wanted to achieve a more "theatrical" feel for this story.
Tumblr media
I enjoyed seeing Doraemon spend a page in the manga discussing mammal evolution in the Mesozoic. This exposition was cut out of both movie adaptations. I understand why, as it has essentially no bearing on the plot, but it's always fun to see the franchise indulge in highlighting its scientific inspirations.
Tumblr media
Having reread the manga, I've gained some fresh appreciation for the 2006 movie remake, as I now realize that it incorporates some components from the manga that the original movie didn't—perhaps most notably, a nice scene where Gian takes Nobita's side in a debate due to Nobita saving his life earlier. I may have been too harsh when I said that I couldn't "think of much reason" to recommend the 2006 remake over the original; the two movies may not have many major story differences, but I'd probably consider the remake a more solid movie overall for the changes it did include. That being said, I'd probably still rank the original movie above the remake as a Doraemon work just for its unique status as the first film in the franchise.

🌱🎢☕🧸🍽️ (Zuki I love Zuki<3)
HII MIKAAA!! ^w^
🌱 - Do they have a green thumb or are they a plant killer?
Plant killer, Mizuki tends to forget about their plants and would spend some days away from home and come back to it dead. They feel very bad about it but they can't handle the responsibility for another life and they prefer going to plant nursery's and just looking. (they like to look at the cacti most of all)
🎢 - Do they like amusement parks? What’s their favorite ride?
YES, Mizuki loves amusement parks, although they dislike the crowds. They'll go on anything as long as the lines aren't long or they have company to stand with. They're favorite are the big fast rides, the ones people say are scary. They got used to going to the amusement nearby by themselves so they already have a plan set in their mind when they go, which rides have the longest lines or which food places get packed at what times, they know their way around.
☕ - Coffee or tea?
Neither, they drink hot cocoa to relax or when they wake up. It's sweeter and it's sorta a comfort drink to them.
🧸 - Do they have any stuffed animals? If so, are they decorative or do they sleep with them?
YYEAAHH, many!!! Most are decorative cause they think sleeping w them will get them dirty and they feel bad about it. Some are in storage, some on their bed or floor, most are mammals but they have some bug plushies like spiders and worms. They do have one plush they sleep w every night (or at least when they're home), its a dog plushie thats weighted and and is sorta worn out but they adore it and sometimes talk to it like its alive.
🍽️ - What’s their favorite food?
already answered lol

1. chipotle order? ugh okay not to spoil 26 but despite growing up on mexican food i have no spice tolerance, so i have a pretty basic order. either burrito or burrito bowl with extra black beans, brown rice, corn salsa, cheese, double lettuce, and guac.
7. what animal do you look forward to seeing when you visit an aquarium? finally my favorite question 🥰 i'm always thrilled to see cephalopods, especially octopus! any mammals they have tend to be quite interesting. but the biggest thing is anything special that aquarium has. i went to the scripps aquarium on my work trip a couple of months ago i lost my everloving mind about the little penguins - there are only 5 other aquariums in the country that have them and i've been following the new zealand national aquarium online for years because of their little penguin exhibit. thankfully by this point i'd long since ditched all my coworkers so when i finally tore myself away from the penguins after 40 minutes i immediately walked into the seadragon feeding and sat there entranced for another 25 minutes. unforch, seadragons live in low light conditions lmao
Tumblr media
i also got to see a cookie cutter shark specimen which i was so surprised and excited abt and i did stick my hand in the cleaner shrimp touch tank because they get to opt into interacting so it was rly fun! i was also thrilled to see mola mola at the monterey bay aquarium, and the shark tunnel at the toronto ripley's aquarium had me truly & completely losing my shit with excitement, i insisted on going through multiple times. anyway sorry that turned into a recitation of cool shit i've seen, i genuinely am excited to see everything at the aquarium and i love to spend hours in there reading the placard on every single display, i'm very lucky that i get to visit so many aquariums when work is flying me around! i love them and i'm going to visit an aquarium on my birthday again this year! however i am surprisingly reserved about touch pools? i'm happy to look but idk... i know they swap the creatures out regularly so none of them get too stressed but it still doesn't feel right to me to go poke the urchin when i get plenty from looking at it. cause can't you stare at this shit for eons?
Tumblr media
25. would you say you have good taste in music? idk about good but it's. hmmmm it's sure something. no one can figure out what it is. a couple of friends can now pretty consistently guess whether i'll like a particular song but god knows what the unifying thread is. my sister was visiting recently and i drove us around for a day trip and asked her to describe my music taste and she said 'irish folk' which is funny because i don't actually have a single irish folk song in my library? anyway angie labeled a lot of my music 'snoozers' so a lot of people probably think it's bad yeah

Hi, I would like to request a matchup :3
So I’m an ENFP but a lot of tests said that I could be an ENTP too, bedsides that I can be a very lively person, I love making the people around me laugh and I can talk with everybody about everything.
I love helping others and I tend to feel like a burden to others a lot. I tend to say sorry often, without even realizing and I go the extra mile to make sure everyone is comfortable.
I love learning about the human body and I hope that in future I will get to be a forensic scientist. I love to work in the lab, I love working with different substances and seeing how things work. I get very obsessed with keeping everything clean and following the steps of experiments without missing anything.
I also love animals and learning about them, especially birds and mammals, I can be like a small encyclopedia when talking about them and If I didn’t loved lab work that much I would have most likely chose to research one of those.
I am chronically ill and bc of it my memory isn’t the best out there, I tend to forget words and it takes a lot for me to remember people by their name. Another effect (that bothers me) is leg pain and usually it’s not that bad but I had days when I almost collapsed bc of the pain.
I like all types of music, recently I like to listen to music on my language and I like the feeling of nostalgia that I get when I do so. Bedsides that I love creating things, would that be by painting, drawing, or making diy’s.
I am 1,59 cm tall and if it’s ok I would preferred only guys 😅
I hope you are having a great day and I’m sending you hugs 🤗
Okay, I will do my very best!! I had to repeat a few because there aren't many male matches to fit, so I apologize.
Fujitora
He enjoys the fact that you are kind and want to help others! Fujitora is one of the few marines who actually has a good heart and wants to do good in the world, and with you he feels the need to want to do it more! You help encourage that behavior and show him that not all people are bad and are worth helping!
He’s a bit older, so he understands the chronic pain and will do his best to help you when he can. It hurts him to see you in so much pain, so he will do whatever is needed to help, whether that be rubbing your legs or getting a heat pad, hell, he will make your favorite food (or try too-)!
The older man might not be able to see anymore, but he knows your artwork is beautiful because it comes from you! Someone as lovely and kind as you can never make something ugly, no matter what you say: it’s amazing.
Bartholomew Kuma
A quiet man, but his heart is gold! He’s a spy for the rebels and does his job well! He truly cares about people and wants the world to be a better place. Seeing that you agree with those beliefs makes the usual frowning man smile! He appreciates all that you do and wants to be a good support system for you as well!
He does his best to understand your chronic illness and might ask Vegapunk about a possible cure if the timing allows it. Though he usually doesn’t talk about you to the other Warlords. Not out of embarrassment, but fear they will hurt you, especially people like Doflamingo or Moria.
You’re the only one who can see him smile and relax, that alone shows how much he loves and trusts you! He will do anything in his power to give you a good life!
Dragon
Similar to the other two stoic men, I think he can be a bit soft with the right people, and you are one of those people! He believes that the world is unjust and wants to do something about it! Seeing that you also believe in those standards warms his hardened heart and lets him know that not all people follow the World Government.
He doesn’t put up with nonsense and enjoys your calmer and quiet nature, it helps relax him after a long day of ordering people around. He also doesn’t mind your chronic illness and can be quite caring when he needs to be. Dragon mostly lets you do as you please, but will remind you every now and then to take care of yourself.
A stoic man, yes, but deep down he truly cares and will do everything in his power to prove it. Just don’t expect love songs or him announcing his love for you, even he gets embarrassed.

I’m not sure if you still do matchups but if you do could I get one for Gotham, Harry Potter, and for Stranger things please?
I’m 19, and 5 foot 2 inch tall. I’m on the skinnier side at like a solid 110 lbs with a bit of a tummy. I also get told alot I have a baby face and look younger than I am. I’m also on the weaker side, but I’m quick and generally pretty agile.
I am Non-Binary (She/He/They) but present feminine and while all terms are fine gender wise I tend to use feminine terms like Girlfriend or Mother for example. I’m also Queer, I just am really attracted to anyone and don’t use labels but I tend to have a preference for men.
I have shoulder length black hair and bangs and my hair has a bit of wave too it and is pretty fluffy most of the time. I also have green eyes.
My style is kind of a combo of Punk and Emo depending on my mood for the day, I wear a lot of Black with Reds or Purples.
I’m into a lot of alternative rock music like MCR, Fall out boy, (old) Pan!c at the disco, Falling in reverse, ect. But I also like Midwestern Emo, Classic rock, Punk, Really most rock adjacent genres- and I actually really enjoy Classical music!
(I’m also a bit of a theatre kid!)
I’m quite the nerd and some of my favorite things are Marvel(I’m a big Spider-Man fan), Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Lord of the Rings, Dungeons & Dragons, Gotham, Stranger things, I love a lot of horror, Slasher, and thriller movies.
I also really love animals, I have a fear of the ocean and bugs so not like fish or insects. BUT Mammals I really love. From cats to bears to Opossums, you name it. Love all the furry little friends.
I have social anxiety and autism so alot of the time I struggle talking to people and making friends, I’m more on the shy side as I worry about embarrassing myself. I tend to open up more as I get closer to people and over time I become my loud and fun self. I’d say I’m a pretty funny person, I’m pretty giggly and it’s not at all hard to make me laugh.
My love language primarily is physical touch- I am very clingy to my partner, I’m a big cuddler. I like to always have some point of contact weather that be hugging or holding hands or even just our legs touching slightly. but I honestly really enjoy all the love languages, and especially love giving my partners gifts and words of affirmation.
I would do like anything for the person I love, even if I gotta fight someone to protect them I’ll do it! The people I’m close to mean alot to me and I’d be willing to put myself in danger if it means keeping them safe.
It also doesn’t help that I tend to get attached to people pretty quickly.
And it’s quite often I act impulsively and act without thinking too much into it. Like say, punching someone in the face because they insulted my partner. Probably should have taken a moment to think and NOT done that but hey- worth it.
And that’s all I could think of, hopefully it’s enough and also sorry if you don’t do matchups anymore I’m like new to finding your account but I love all the stuff I’ve read of yours!!
I think for Gotham
Tumblr media
He fits your aesthetic. I also feel he would understand you being shy and help you. He also loves animals and would love a pet. I think you would share hobbies.
Tumblr media
He is actually really sweet to you. He loves the way you dress and all the colors. He will help you when you feel shy or scared. He is always there for your ups and downs.
Tumblr media
I think she would be so sweet and understanding. She loves your aesthetic and will let you give her makeovers sometimes. Compliments 24/7. Takes you to letting zoos and other animal places.

My dearly beloved blnk,
I’m afraid this will be my last correspondence of the day, due to my lack of sleep. But setting that aside you may in fact refer to me as pipebomb, if you so wish. I also may not be as eloquently as thee but I will my try my best to meet thy standards.
And to proceed with our previous conversation, I not only have a big interest in marine mammals, but land mammals as well. Do you know much about spotted hyenas other than their infamous laugh? We’ll if you don’t, you may be surprise to find out that they are also matriarchal animals as well. There is a single leading female for the entire clan. Clans tend to span from 8-80 members on average. But unlike orcas who are very family oriented, in hyena society, it’s every hyena for themselves. Females tend to be 30% bigger than males from birth so they already have a physical advantage from the very beginning. They also have a semi-complex hierarchy. Even the lowest ranking female outranks the highest ranking male.
When born, Pups immediately inherit their mothers ranking, so if a pup happens to be born a daughter to the matriarch, she will have it easy for the rest of her life (as long as her mothers keeps her position). A male born to the matriarch however will only have her ranking until he is of age, after that he will be forced by his mother to leave the clan and fend for himself to find his own clan. This is done to avoid inbreeding (this happens to all males born into a clan).
The next fact can make people quite uncomfortable, so if learning about animal anatomy can make you feel queasy, then please proceed with caution. Female hyenas have penises. It’s more of a penile clitoris, but a penis nonetheless. This is due to the extremely high levels of testosterone during pregnancy. A male cannot physical mate with a female without her full consent. A true win if you ask me, the bare minimum really but a win.
In short, female spotted hyenas are girl bosses. They slay until the day the die. I hope this hasn’t bored you to death, and if youve read this far, I thank you.
Sincerely yours,
Pipebomb.
pipebomb,
the sun has risen over the horizon and i am pleased to read what i have on hyenas! they are quite the creature
while i do not have any fun mammal facts, i was a bug kid, and allow your eyes to feast upon... this!!

now that you've seen this wretched thing, remove its image from your mind. weevils are foolish, dinky little creatures
allow your mind to go somewhere far nicer, far cuter, and gaze upon this endearing critter instead

this is a jumping spider, cute, fuzzy, and full of love
these intelligent little creatures will hop around-- yes, actually jump unlike many other insects-- sometimes for travel, but mostly for hunting!! and guess what... these little fellows are venomous!! but just like daddy longlegs, they don't have the bite to hurt humans!! they'll use their venom to paralyze prey... but to us? oh they're fuzzy little things
they can also be trained!! oh and they can dance! they can dance if they want to! they can leave this world behind!
their big eyes give them fantastic sight-- so yes, they can see you!! but they're quite unique in their seeing abilities. to put it simply, big eyes mean color, small eyes mean black and white

Master Ball: Favorite Legendary(ies)
Hmm... probablyyyy Type: Null/Silvally? Most people count it as one so definitely that one!
alot of the pokemon i like the best tend to be the ones who look like they have feats of multiple animals, like the legendary beast trio, or pokemon like absol which is definitely supposed to emulate some sort of mountain mammal, but its face makes me think of a black domestic cat (which makes sense with its theme of bad luck), and Type: Null/Silvally just scratches that itch.
Venoshock: Favorite Poison types(s)
Scolipede. that is my favorite FUCKING horse pokemon 💘💝💖💗💓💞💕 none can compare

Muse: Jix
Tumblr media
{ Artwork by the very talented @snarksarcasmart } [ Bio and other information below the cut! ]
Type of Character & Fandom/Source Material: Fandomless OC from an unpublished series of books I wrote back around 2005, the main one of which was entitled The Mask of Truth. Jix appeared in that book and in a companion short story, The Ulaeri Chronicles: The Hunter and the Princess. I used to write Jix over at @xleafyheartx, if you want to peruse his blog, which is left on hiatus for now.
FC: Pickett from Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them
VC: Gudetama, just not in Japanese, haha. But the way his voice sounds is 100% Jix. Here’s a video if you’d like to hear what he sounds like!
Race: An oaken variety of Leafling, which is a species of tree fae. (Think of the Ents from Tolkien’s worlds but... on a microscale, heh.)
Gender: Male
Height: 12-13″ depending on the time of year and how big his leaves are
Age: He’s had birthdays over the years on this site, so it’s varied, but I generally say 25
Sexual/Romantic Orientation: Heterosexual/romantic... inasmuch as he can fall in love and pollinate a female, lol. Leaflings tend to mate for life.
Occupation: Positivity-spreader and cuteness brigade member. Otherwise unemployed. XD
Languages: Gaelic (native), High Elven, English
Family: Parents and sixteen brothers and sisters he hasn’t seen since he was an adolescent; he had a favorite sister Ki-mi he traveled with for about a year after leaving the “nest,” so to speak

Background & General Info:
Jix is a magical beast, having physical qualities of both mammals and plants that make up his body, as well as supernatural features. He has intelligence and self-awareness on par with humans or elves. He has brown bark on the main “twig” of his body, and his body is a bit thicker than his arms and roots, like a tree trunk. He has branches on his head like a tree, with oak-shaped leaves growing on them. Like any plant, Jix needs water and nutrients to survive, but like an animal, he can eat food rather than having to rely on sunlight or planting himself in soil for energy and nutrients.
Jix was one of seventeen siblings in his particular batch of seedlings. He grew up in a large and happy family before setting out on his own to go exploring, as the majority of young leaflings do. Most leaflings stay in their home forest, but Jix had bigger goals. He wanted to see the world! He’s ended up in some pretty amazing places over the years, either hitching rides in vehicles or on animals, or making friends with humans and other beings who then take him with them.
Despite being very thin, Jix has a pretty big stomach for someone his size! Eating is a favored pastime of his. He loves sweet foods, and baked goods are some of his favorite things. But his absolute favorite are fruits... and his favorites of those are berries! He... has a berry addiction. He LOVES berries. Strawberries are his #1 favorites, but he also loves cherries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries... all the berries. Desserts made out of lots of berries, like pies or tarts, blow his mind.
Jix has a very interesting way of speaking when using English. It isn’t his first language, and he’s learned it mostly by listening to humans, so there’s been some issues along the way. He focuses more on getting his point across than on spelling and grammar, and it shows. This is by no means comprehensive, but I did make a tiny lexicon at some point of some of the words Jix says, if you’d like to read it and get an idea of how he talks. He tends to either butcher the actual names of things, or he gives them what he feels are simpler or more intuitive names... that often make no sense to humans.
Potential Starter Ideas:
Jix... gets into a lot of trouble, heh. He can stowaway in a box or car or wherever and your muse can notice him later. Or he can wander into somewhere he shouldn’t be, like a store or home.
Sometimes Jix will just accost people to ask for help if he’s tired, hungry, thirsty, lost, or injured.
Sometimes he’ll sneak into people’s houses or apartments if it’s raining (particularly thunderstorming) and he wants shelter, or if your muse happens to be baking and he smells something tasty.
If your muse likes to hike or otherwise be out in nature, he can be found in forests or any forest-like areas, such as parks or even the grassy borders and medians around highways.
He has been known to end up captured and put up for sale at an auction or in a pet store. He hates that, especially if he’s mistreated, so save him!
Fun facts:
Most leaflings are expert climbers, but Jix sucks at it! Other leaflings have made fun of him for it, and it’s a source of insecurity for him. Sometimes he tries to practice to improve, but that usually ends in him falling and landing smack on his ass. XD
Jix is very aware of how cute he is and he takes pride in it. He also enjoys being so cute because it helps him cheer up those around him!
The best way to Jix’s heart if you’re trying to make friend with him is... give him a berry! He appreciates being given food as a gift so much that after that it’ll be difficult for him to not be your friend.
Jix can make up songs on the fly for any reason. I’m not promising they’ll be overly good, but they’ll be sung with positive enthusiasm and will likely still be adorable.

Akum'eki Lore
This is going to be a HUGE read, so to avoid clogging people's dashes, I'll pop this under a readmore. For a basic idea of what you're getting into, here be free love psychic bugfish aliens.
Overview
The Axum’eki are an alien species, hailing from the planet Txed’umin. Upon cursory glance, they seem to be various crossbreeds between arthropods and marine animals. They are very relaxed beings, a culture of freedom and pleasures. They are well-attuned with one another and their planet, able to appreciate connections between others and nature more than nearly any other species.
The Planet of Txed’umin
Txed’umin is an astrological anomaly of a planet. Physically similar to a gas giant, the planet is entirely made of water, gravitating to a dense liquid core. There is a sun in their solar system, but their planet has no moon. There are a few landmasses here and there, outcroppings of porous floating stone similar to pumice. Trees root themselves through the stone, drinking up the planet’s water and producing delicious fruits analogous to peaches or oranges. There is no seasonal rotation, so fruit trees on Txed’umin are constantly producing; it’s just a matter of when everything is ripe. This makes up a significant portion of the main diet of the Axum’eki, in addition to a nonsapient fish species plus any imported delicacies. Txed’umin has no buildings or economy to speak of, so most imports come from off-world tourists bringing gifts to their favorite Axum’eki friends.
Axum’eki Biology
Axum’eki, as mentioned, are visually blends between arthropods and marine animals. This includes fish, marine mammals, and marine reptiles. The diversity between Axum’eki is off the charts, but they retain visual cohesion with their four eyes, four arms, tall height, and overall cooler color schemes. They all possess gills that can breathe air and water alike, and are quick to adapt to new circumstances. When in water, the cells of the Axum’eki experience accelerated growth, allowing those who venture off-planet to near-instantaneously adapt to new planets by submerging themselves in water. On average, the Axum’eki only live around 40-50 years, though other planets might cause that to fluctuate somewhat.
Axum’eki Culture
The Axum’eki live as Earthen hippie stereotypes. Most do not claim homes and sleep wherever, though a few have particular rocks or shady spots they have unofficially chosen as theirs. This is respected by other Axum’eki. They do not tend to keep time, with no real system beyond the general day and night cycle. They do not have holidays, but they will throw occasional parties and hold bonfires between themselves. During these bonfires, they hold song circles, where each individual adds their own element to a wholly unique sound. This can be rhythmic hum-like buzzing or percussive mandible clicks, and each one is unique to the specific Axum’eki. The tempo of each part aligns with the singer’s heartbeat, and is known as their heartsong, or their mont’xi. They carry their mont’xi with them through their whole lives, as a form of comfort and identity.
Axum’eki practice a form of free love, marked by deep interpersonal relationships regardless of species. Gender is not much of a concept in Axum’ekian language, with no personal pronouns existing to denote such. Sexual intimacy is a very important act for the Axum’eki, and they will share it with those they deem trustworthy as a symbol of a bond, viewing sex almost like a long hug. Sex is a constant across Txed’umin, driving tourism.  About four of every five Axum’eki are having sex at any given time. This also serves the purpose of breeding, of course, and any Axum’eki can breed with any other. The eggs laid are similar to clutches of frog eggs, hatching aquatically. Hatchlings mature quickly, in only around thirty days. Initial hatchings are celebrated, but birthdays are not kept track of.
The Axum’eki possess a slight empathetic form of telepathy. They can produce psychic signals similar to pheromones, carried and amplified across water. The outputted signals tend to indicate a desire for intimacy or company, though they could also carry the rhythms of a nearby song circle. Axum’eki tend to greet others for the first time by touching foreheads, or performing ak’alo, sharing names and basic overviews with one another in an instant and building a subtle psychic link that ensures the Axum’eki never forget anyone they’ve met. They also learn languages this way, though the learning is not perfect; Axum’ekian has very few nouns, so they may forget words frequently.
Interplanetary Relations
Visitors to Txed’umin are typically tourists seeking a paradise retreat. The whole planet is a warm climate perfect for mingling with the locals, whether to relax or ‘relieve stress.’ Either way, the water is always the perfect temperature, the fruit and fish are tasty, and the music is strangely harmonious to those who hear. Just make sure you’re a good swimmer, or know an Axum’eki who will romantically carry you through the waters. Even those from militant and imperial cultures can relax with the Axum’eki, as they’re simply too kind and loveable to not let yourself relax with.
But what of the Axum’eki who venture off-world? They tend to leave with the tourists, wanting to experience other planets and cultures. Some are gifted cobbled-together travel pods from scraps of abandoned ships, and given the opportunity to find their own planets to call home. Overpopulation is quite a concern for Txed’umin, though not an immediate danger. With as many eggs laid as there are, it’s bound to become an issue at some point, so several choose to leave for new planets with less fertile inhabitants.
OUT OF CHARACTER INFO
Can I make an Axum'eki character? Yes, please do! You're welcome to contact me for more information on specific style guides, or even commission me to draw one if you've got an idea! Just tag me and we're good!
Can I write about the Axum'eki and/or my character visiting Txed'umin? Absolutely! Again, you're free to message me if you need specifics. Also tag me if you don't mind!

Bats Are In Trouble. That’s Not good For Anyone Who Likes Mezcal, Rice or Avocado
Some of Our Favorite Foods and Drinks Rely on These Oft-Misunderstood Mammals, Which are Facing Multiple Threats
— By Whitney Bauck | Thursday 21 March 2024

If You’ve Ever Enjoyed Coffee ☕️, Tomatoes 🍅, Corn 🌽, Bananas 🍌, Mangoes 🥭, Walnuts, Chocolate 🍫, Tequila 🍺 or Mezcal, You May Just Owe Bats a Thank-You.
While bats are often the subject of fear and scorn – they’re fixtures in Halloween decor and haunted-house imagery, and are frequently portrayed as harbingers of doom – their presence is often a sign of a thriving ecosystem. Some of our favorite food and drinks would be much less plentiful, or even nonexistent, without them.
Bats play a few significant roles in human food systems. Some serve as a form of natural pest control by feeding on insects that can destroy crops like corn and pecans. Others pollinate species like bananas, coconuts, avocados and agave, a role many people associate with bees and butterflies. And some fruit-eating bats help maintain wild plant populations through seed dispersal – think mangoes, cashews, figs and almonds.

Despite all the ways that bats help ecosystems thrive, “they often get forgotten” in conservation conversations, and in people’s estimations of what it takes to maintain sustainable food systems, said Kristen Lear, who works at Bat Conservation International. Whether it’s because we just don’t notice bats (as nocturnal animals, they’re certainly not easy to observe) or because we tend to associate them with dark and spooky things, bats are rarely championed. But as threats from habitat destruction, disease and climate change mount, it’s time that changed.
No Bats, No Tequila
Most of the time when you order a margarita, you probably aren’t thinking about bats – but maybe you should be. Tequila is made from agave, and agave plants have long relied on bats for both pollination and seed dispersal.
The Mexican long-nosed bat, which has co-evolved with agave for millions of years, is a fuzzy little gray-brown creature that uses its 3in-long tongue to slurp nectar from agave flowers that bloom at night. This migratory species travels from west Texas and south-western New Mexico down into Mexico each year, keeping pace with the blooming periods of agave and flowering cacti.
But as demand for tequila and mezcal – another spirit made from agave – has grown, the plant is increasingly being harvested at scales that put these migratory bats at risk. After having been appreciated in Mexico for hundreds of years, agave-based spirits are becoming increasingly popular abroad, and nowhere are they more sought-after than in the US, where about 80% of the world’s tequila is sold.
“Agave spirits from Mexico are very trendy now. Probably that trend started 10 years ago, but in the last four or five years, it has been intense,” said Diana Pinzón, a forestry engineer who works with small-scale mezcal producers. “It’s a big problem for agaves endemic to Mexico, and for the bats and all the biodiversity around the ecosystems where the agaves grow.”
Tumblr media

US thirst for agave-based spirits, and the money that can be made from selling them, is driving growers to harvest at a scale and in a manner that’s not sustainable long-term, according to Pinzón. In many places, agave plants are chopped down before they’ve had time to bloom, leaving bats that rely on the flowers’ nectar with one less food source.
Producers can grow new agave by working with “baby” shoots sent out by parent plants, but without bats cross-pollinating them, the new plants are all clones and lose genetic diversity over time. Pinzón fears this will make the plants less resilient in the face of climate threats and extreme weather.
“These two species evolved together for the last 10m years. If you lose one, you lose the other,” she said.
Pinzón is building a small-label brand called Zinacantán Mezcal with a fourth-generation agave grower who leaves 20% of the crop in the field for the bats, and believes that limiting the amount of production of agave-based spirits is the only path forward for any legitimate claim to sustainability.
“The demand is like cars in the city. If you build a new freeway [to fix traffic], more cars will just end up on the road,” she said. “So the [agave] projects need to put limits and say: ‘OK, we can make that quantity [of spirits] every year and no more.’ We need to recognize and take action to mitigate our ecological impact.”
The Bug-Eaters
Troy Swift has been farming pecans in Texas since 1998, but hadn’t thought about building bat houses near his orchards until recently. He was first inspired when Merlin Tuttle, a legendary bat conservationist, visited his farm and suggested it. “He said: ‘Troy, with the biodiversity you have here, you really might want to consider using bats as part of your pest-control program,’” Swift recalled.
It wasn’t long before Swift started building his own bat houses. Within six months, bats had moved in. He now has 17 bat houses on his property, and is working with Tuttle’s organization to quantify the impact that the bats have on his crop. Together, they’ve used echolocation technology and guano (bat dropping) DNA sampling to learn that there are at least seven species of bats living on Swift’s farm. They also found that over the course of six weeks, the bats had eaten more than 100 species of insects.
Tumblr media

They’re still trying to gather enough data to prove whether or not the bats are helping control the specific pest insects that eat pecans, but having found that the bats eat mosquitoes, flies and pests that bother livestock is already enough to convince Swift that bats have a role to play on farms.
“What we’re trying to do is leverage the use of bats into all agriculture and teach farmers that these bats are really your friends,” Swift said.
Other studies have already concluded that bats are providing farmers free pest-control services, whether they know it or not. Bats save more than $1bn a year in crop damage and pesticide use in the US corn industry, and more than $3bn a year across all agricultural production, according to Jade Florence, a biologist at the US Fish and Wildlife Service, who has worked on bat conservation efforts.
Simply having bats around, even when they’re not feeding, helps keep pests under control, according to Lear of Bat Conservation International. “The mere presence of bats in agricultural fields can actually suppress the activity of those insects,” she said.
How To Help Bats Under Threat
For all the good they do for food systems, bats face numerous threats. “Many species around the world, including here in the US, are undergoing some sort of habitat loss, whether that’s disturbance to their roost sites in caves or mines or trees, or loss of foraging habitat – loss of forests or agricultural areas that have healthy insect populations,” said Lear. Other threats include the extreme weather caused by the climate crisis and diseases like white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease that has decimated North American bat populations.
Tumblr media

So what can be done? Lear has been working on a project with 60 partners across the US and Mexico to plant 115,000 agave plants in the Mexican long-nosed bats’ migratory path. Her organization recommends exploring nature responsibly (for example, respecting cave closures in order to not expose bat populations to new pathogens), protecting old trees that can serve as bat roosts, keeping cats indoors where they can’t harm bats and providing a water source in arid environments.
People who want to go one step further can build or buy a bat house and plant a bat-friendly garden with some native night-blooming flowers to attract nocturnal insects that bats can feed on. (Besides having a positive ecological benefit, “it’s just fun” having bats around, said Swift, who loves watching them emerge at dusk to hunt insects.)
But Lear said you can also help by doing something even simpler: talking about bats and why we need them. “The more we have people doing that to their friends and families, the more it will take root in their brains,” she said. “Over time, that will help gain public support for bat conservation.”

Giraffe predators and prey
Tumblr media
Literally, they get together, hide, and then attack the intruder. If an intruder is nearby, the honeybees will plot to ambush the unwanted visitor. The Japanese honeybee has come up with an ingenious way to kill larger insects that pose a threat to their hives, like the wasp. With that being said, honeybees can use their stingers as defense mechanisms against other insects and non-mammalian animals and survive. There are barbs on a bee’s stinger, invisible to the naked eye, that when plunged into mammal skin, cannot be removed thus the bee loses its stinger, and whatever other internal elements go with it. Even the Bee Eater birds are not immune to this line of defense, and that is why they take care to remove the venom before eating the honeybee.Īmazingly, only female honeybees can deliver a sting to its enemies, and despite what most people believe, the bee does not die after stinging its attacker, unless it has stung a mammal with fleshy skin–aka humans. The StingĪ honeybee’s primary defense mechanism is its ability to sting a predator, injecting a debilitating, sometimes deadly, venom. Honeybees tend to take excellent care of themselves, however, unlike most animals we care for, we have very little control over what happens when a busy bee leaves its hive in pursuit of pollen. If a hive is weak, ill, or otherwise, the beetles can quickly overtake an entire colony, or cause the hive to swarm. Typically, these little beetles do not enter hives of healthy bees, because they risk being killed easily by worker bees. The Small Hive Beetle is another invasive bug that infiltrates a beehive and sets up shop. However, some people decide to pursue pesticide options, which can do more harm than good for the bees. Unless you have a significant spider problem, it usually doesn’t justify worrying about bee loss. These spiders can even change color, camouflaging them against the flower they are hunting from.īecause crab spiders eat anything and everything, they don’t care whether they are eating a honeybee pollinator or another type of insect. There are some sneaky spiders, referred to as flower crab spiders, that hideout amongst bees’ favorite flowers hoping to catch their prey off guard. This is no different for bees getting caught in a spider’s web. It’s no secret that the reason spiders build webs is to catch other insects to feast upon. In general, you have very little control over bird predators, but rest easy knowing that any bee loss due to birds is actually going to be quite minimal. Birds, in general, may choose to consume bees, but this family of birds, Meropidae, seeks out bees specifically.īee Eaters are careful in their hunt, as they expertly attack bees in mid-flight, and proceed to smash them on hard surfaces to remove the stinger, and any remaining venom then they enjoy their meal.īee Eaters are actually quite beautiful birds with bright colors and a delicate long beak, perfect for bee-catching. Luckily this predator is only found in certain parts of the world, mostly in Africa and Asia. While beewolves usually pick off a few bees here and there, this predator does not usually cause as much devastation as some of the others on this list. In doing so, they are also exposing the hive to the danger of other robbers and predators by busting up the cells and allowing the sweet aroma of honey to drift into the wild. Wasps will enter your beehive and attack the bees within it. A honeybee may try to defend itself by stinging however, the wasp has powerful armor that can deflect the bees attempt at defending itself. When a beewolf attacks a honeybee, it stings and paralyzes the bee. The honeybees are kept alive as long as possible to keep them fresh for the wasps’ developing larva to consume.Īccording to Science Daily, studies have shown that the wasps use gas to preserve the bees in the brood cells while preventing bacteria and fungus from growing. Beewolves tunnel into the ground, where they lay their eggs on top of paralyzed, or dead, honeybees. These nasty insects prefer to eat bees and use them to feed their developing brood. Beewolves AKA Waspsīeewolves are also known as wasps. Skunks don’t want to stretch itself out and expose its soft belly to the threat of bee stings. This will deter this smelly nuisance from eating your bees. Skunks enjoy eating bees themselves, and they will actually suck on the bees, and spit out the parts they aren’t interested in eating.Ī skunk will collect bees from the lower entrance of your hive, so if you can, raise your hive a few feet off the ground. You will know if a skunk has raided your hive if there are remnants of bees laying about outside the hive.
