Tumblr media
Series/Pairing: Open Heart - Tobias Carrick x f!MC (Samantha Carlson)
Disclaimer: Most characters belong to PB, Samantha is sort of mine. So is Paula
Other Characters: Paula Simmons (F!OC); Marlene; Ethan Ramsey
Rating / Warnings: Teen; language. Little bit of angst.
Summary: Edenbrook has a new nurse. Tobias knows her well. This short drabble will serve as her introduction.
Comments/Notes: Written for the @choices-november2022 Day 11 - Nurses. Thanks to @liaromancewriter when my brain failed on word choice.
Word count: 580
Just as the elevator doors slid open on the fifth floor, Tobias’ phone dinged with an incoming text from Bryce. He frowned as he read it.
Dude. Paula Simmons. New nurse, 4th floor. Do you know her?
“I need to talk to Ethan.” Tobias stepped back into the elevator.
Samantha turned. “Is everything okay? Was that a text from Ethan?”
“Fine. It’s… fine.” Samantha was still confused as the door closed between them as he continued onto the sixth floor.
Samantha headed to her office, still wondering what was so urgent that Tobias needed to go see Ethan immediately. She hung her jacket on the hanger at the back of her door. She logged onto her computer, opening her email. She quickly skimmed the subjects, cringing at Leland Bloom’s email, Technical Investor Meeting 8pm. She opened it, reading it frowning. Next Tuesday he had set up a cocktail reception between the heads of the hospital and leaders in the technical and scientific communities. She sighed, whispering under her breath, cause it was such a success last time. Finishing the emails, she slung her stethoscope around her neck and headed to the fourth floor to check on the two diagnostic patients.
As she approached the nurses station, Marlene waved to her. “Dr. Carlson. I’d like to introduce you to Paula Simmons, a new RN who comes to us from Mass Kenmore.”
A nurse turned and smiled at her. “Hello.”
Samantha returned her smile. “It’s nice to meet you, Paula.”
“You too, Dr. Carlson. Marlene and Sarah have briefed me on the diagnostics team. I excited to be able to work with the patients your team helps.”
“You’re from Mass Kenmore; do you know Tobias Carrick? He's one of our doctors.” Samantha asked.
She  didn’t see the frown that quickly passed over Paula’s face as her pager beeped and she looked down to see a message from Ethan.
By the time Samantha looked back up, Paula’s smile was back in place. “I knew Dr. Carrick. I didn’t know he was on the diagnostics team. I thought he was going to be the head of the emergency here.”
“Mr. Bloom decided that the diagnostics team would benefit from his experience and we were glad to have him.” Samantha turned to Marlene. “I just got a page from Chief Ramsey; I’ll be back soon to check on our patients.”
As she approached Ethan’s door she heard a raised voice and recognized Tobias. “What the fuck were you thinking hiring Paula Simmons, Ethan!”
She didn’t hear Ethan’s reply, but she did hear Tobias. “She is here to make trouble for me! She wasn’t happy when I stopped seeing her.”
Ethan was angry enough that she heard him now. “Maybe you would like to give me a list of all the nurses, lab techs, doctors, and receptionists you’ve slept with so I’ll be sure not to hire any of them!”
“Can you at least move her to a different floor!”
Ethan had calmed down and she didn’t hear his reply. She waited a few minutes and raised her hand to knock on the door when it opened with a jerk. She stepped back as she came face to face with Tobias.
“Is everything okay?” She repeated the same question she had asked him earlier.
He gave the same reply, looking back at Ethan. “Fine. It’s… fine.”
“Would you mind checking on our patients on four? I’m not sure how long my meeting here is going to last.”
To be continued…

The GOP has turned on virtually every noble principle it once claimed to stand for. It has become a freak show, embodied in people like Trump and Walker, Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert, Ron Johnson and Josh Hawley, Blake Masters and Doug Mastriano, Adam Laxalt and J. D. Vance, Steve Bannon and Roger Stone, Michael Flynn and Mike Lindell, Tucker Carlson and Sebastian Gorka, Eric Metaxas and Paula White. They shape its sensibilities, providing the script for everyone else to follow.
To make matters worse, those who surely know better—people like Lindsey Graham, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Ron DeSantis, and especially Kevin McCarthy—turned out to be hollow men, “shape without form, shade without colour, paralysed force, gesture without motion.”
For them and for so many people in their party and the MAGA movement, with exceptions so rare that you can almost count them on a single hand, politics has been stripped of any honor. Politics, for them, is about power in the pursuit of yet more power. Politics is purely performative, nasty and brutish, a way to stoke anger and grievances, a means to exact vengeance. That the most impressive person in the Republican Party, Liz Cheney, is the most despised, says everything.

Happy Birthday Martine Beswicke!
Martine Beswicke (born 26 September 1941) is an English-Jamaican actress and model perhaps best known for her roles in two James Bond films, From Russia with Love (1963) and Thunderball (1965), who went on to appear in several other notable films in the 1960s. In 2019, she was inducted into the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards' Monster Kid Hall of Fame.
Beswicke is best known for her two appearances in the James Bond film series. Although she auditioned for the first Bond film Dr. No (1962), she was cast in the second film From Russia with Love (1963) as the fiery gypsy girl, Zora. She engaged in a "catfight" scene with her rival Vida (played by former Miss Israel Aliza Gur). Beswicke later stated that there was as much bad feeling with Gur offscreen as well as on, with the film's director, Terence Young, encouraging Beswicke to get rough with Gur.
Tumblr media
"I was a very nice girl but Aliza was a cow. We had terrible clashes and I was disgusted with her. I had a lot of anger inside of me so that [fight] scene was a perfect way to work it out. We rehearsed the fight for three weeks but when we shot it, Aliza was really fighting. Everyone encouraged me to fight back, so I did. We got into a real scrapping match." — Martine Beswicke[9]
Beswicke then appeared as the ill-fated Paula Caplan in Thunderball (1965). She had been away from the Caribbean so long that she was required to sunbathe constantly for two weeks before filming, to look like a local.
Tumblr media
Beswicke went on to appear in One Million Years B.C. (1966) opposite Raquel Welch, with whom she also engaged in a catfight. She played Adelita in the well-regarded Spaghetti Western, A Bullet for the General (1966) opposite Klaus Kinski and Gian Maria Volonté and played a villainous role in the exploitation thriller The Penthouse (1967). She then appeared in various Hammer Films, most notably Prehistoric Women (1967) (aka Slave Girls) and the gender-bending horror Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde (1971), in which she played the titular villainess.
Tumblr media
She had a supporting role in the Italian sex comedy The Last Italian Tango (1973). She then starred as the Queen of Evil in Oliver Stone's 1974 directorial debut Seizure. In the 1970s, Beswicke moved to Hollywood and regularly appeared on both the big and small screens. She made numerous guest appearances on television series, including Sledge Hammer!, Fantasy Island, The Fall Guy, Mannix, The Six Million Dollar Man and Falcon Crest. In 1980, she played the lead role in the comedy film The Happy Hooker Goes Hollywood.
Tumblr media
Beswicke's career was active well into the 1990s. Since then, she has mainly participated in film documentaries, providing commentary and relating her experiences on the many films in which she has appeared. She owned a removals business in London, but is now semiretired except for her guest appearances at international film conventions.
After a 24 year absence from the screen, Beswicke came out of retirement in 2018 to appear in House of the Gorgon opposite fellow Hammer film actors Caroline Munro, Veronica Carlson, and Christopher Neame.

A fourth-year medical student at North Carolina’s Wake Forest University, Kychelle Del Rosario, is on "extended leave" and will not be seeing patients amid controversy over a tweet suggesting she missed a vein during a blood draw on a patient who disagreed with her political views on transgenderism.
"Wake Forest School of Medicine has completed a thorough review of the patient encounter with our medical student who recently made an inaccurate statement on social media," Wake Health spokeswoman Paula Faria said in a statement to Fox News Digital on Friday. "The review determined that the student had no intention to harm the patient and followed Medical Center protocols."
"The School and the student have agreed upon her taking an extended leave," Faria added. "During this time the student will not participate in any patient care activities."
REP. GREG MURPHY, M.D., RIPS STUDENT WHO IMPLIED SHE HARMED PATIENT WHO MOCKED HER OVER GENDER PRONOUNS
Faria did not respond to a Fox News Digital follow-up email Monday seeking clarification as to how long the "extended leave" will last or whether Del Rosario might still face permanent expulsion.
Fox News Digital reached out to the Winston-Salem City Attorney Angela Carmon Monday asking whether her office planned an independent investigation into Del Rosario’s actions. In response, she said the matter is not something her office would handle, without elaborating further.
Fox News’ "Tucker Carlson Tonight" producer Gregg Re has called on local prosecutors to subpoena Wake Forest University to obtain the identity of the patient and conduct an independent probe.
In a March 29 tweet, Del Rosario said: "I had a patient I was doing a blood draw on see my pronoun pin and loudly laugh to the staff ‘She/Her" Well of course it is! What other pronouns even are there? It?’"
"I missed his vein so he had to get stuck twice," she added.
Amid an outpouring of media coverage, the school has since claimed Del Rosario’s tweet was not an accurate recount of the incident and that in fact, after Del Rosario was unsuccessful in her first attempt at a blood draw, she appropriately deferred to a certified physician who was successful the second time.
Another Wake Forest medical student, Ewen Liu, defended Del Rosario and defined her alleged mistake as karma that the patient had coming to him over his remarks about the pin.
"To clarify, the missed stick was COMPLETELY an accident and just seemed ‘karma-tic’," Liu wrote. "She is kind and professional and would never harm anyone intentionally."
In a recent email to the student body, the dean of the Wake Forest School of Medicine criticized "unkind people" on the Internet who discussed the story instead of condemning the treatment of a patient.
"It is appalling that the vast majority of the media coverage surrounding Del Rosario’s tweet is critiquing her lack of professionalism rather than her patient’s display of bigotry," the student newsletter said. "There’s been no known follow-up with the patient concerning the problematic nature of their comments, or even any documentation of their inappropriate behavior."
Before Friday’s update, Del Rosario was previously scheduled to see patients at Wake Baptist Ear, Nose and Throat department this week and was on the Wake Forest planning committee for an upcoming conference in Dallas, Texas, slated to discuss how best to treat transgender patients.
