--METER—
Coffee and Rock and Roll time: 6:00 pm
Bruce Springsteen, THE RIVER The Smiths, THE SMITHS The Clash, SANDINISTA The Kinks, THE KINKS ARE THE VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY
Eating pizza for breakfast, because it is my right as a single middle-aged man who works graveyard shift and closely guards his right to his own perspective. I’m reminded of one of my favorite lines from the Clash Song, LOSE THIS SKIN: “What’s it like to be so free? So free it looks like lost to me!
Last night, I lost business, but only at the end, due to a malfunctioning meter. It suddenly began under tallying the miles. I noticed it when I drove Frank Number 2 home. His fare consistently comes to $21-22 and it came to $12 last night. I’m not taking a pay cut.
Today, I took the time to complete my ballot and vote. I made my choices based on the topic of defund the police and other crime issues. I believe in Police Reform, but not at the expense of a functioning police force. I agree that the abusive nature of the status quo of policing is a problem, long overdue to be solved, but abolishing them altogether is a stupid idea. People need to go back to being practical.
About 20 years ago, I was a member of a dragon boat racing team. We practiced to compete in the dragon boat races at the annual Rose Festival. While at practice one day, my car was broken into and someone stole my pants. Yes, my pants were stolen out of my car in downtown Portland. Believing that its better to report a crime rather than not, I contacted the Portland Police Bureau. Later that night, a young police man came to my door at the house I shared with friends on SE 48th avenue. He took my statement about the car break in. I mentioned that the pants were a size 34 waist by 32 inseam, and he couldn’t help but chuckle. Of course, there wasn’t going to be an investigation.
About 10 years later, my car was broken into in front of my house. Very little was stolen, as I believe they were more interested in documents for identity theft, etc. When I called the police to report it, the person on the other end of the line was directing me to a website for reporting car break ins. I asked them why they weren’t going to send a cop over and they said that’s not what they do anymore. The PPB was starting to gradually feel the effects of staffing shortages, and consequently so were services.
Over the intervening years, I’ve witnessed drivers increasingly breaking traffic laws. More and more often I would start to see drivers running red lights, excessively speed on the freeway, and now surface roads. It used to be that every once in a while, I would see someone run a light. Soon, I started to see them every day. (for those of you who don’t know, I drive a taxi at night, at least five nights a week) Now all the time.
An absence of sufficient law enforcement officers has created a sense of laxity in consequences for traffic infractions: and other crimes. When my apartment was broken into, about 19 months ago, I contacted the police at 2:30 a.m. They didn’t get back to me until 8 am, and all that they did was to provide me with a case number. I couldn’t be angry about It, while I called the first time, the police precinct up on MLK and Killingsworth was surrounded by activists who were trying to burn it down. They had taken over the roadway on MLK and declared it the “Patrick Kimmons Autonomous Zone” Ultimately, I had to investigate my own burglary.
The activism against police brutality is a cause that I would believe in, and align myself with, if it was rational. I want police reform, but that doesn't look like abolishing the police. Similarly, defunding the police is also ridiculous as reform often costs more than maintaining the status quo. Patrick Kimmons was a man who in the course of an altercation downtown, shot two people. Shortly after this, officers from the Portland Police Bureau who were nearby attempted to arrest him. He fled with the gun he had just used and was shot dead by the cops. Tragic. Tragic, however, it’s not much of an example of police brutality. Well, not to too many. In the estimation of groups like “Don’t Shoot Portland,” He gets treated like a martyr and when people march against police brutality, they simultaneously march for justice for Patrick Kimmons. How am I supposed to join in the fight against police brutality when this the example they hold up?
At this point, Portland is convulsing with crime. Gang violence, random violence, possibly even thrill killing. Recently a security guard at a hotel I drop folks off at was shot to death in his car. Two nights ago a homeless woman was murdered, shortly after a drum circle. Other crimes of pure recklessness are also having an effect. One of our drivers was nearly killed when a car speeding through the old town section of Portland ran a light and crushed his car at the driver’s side. This car was travelling at speeds in excess of 50mph, and on a road that has a traffic light on every block. This accident, in which this man’s injuries are so severe that he will spend at least a year recovering from, has been enabled by the dearth of consequences that are due to inadequate staffing at the Portland Police Bureau.
I voted for candidates who are opposed to defund the police. I recommend everyone else does the same.

CW: violence:
Last night, Portland community members were organizing a march for Amir Locke, Daunte Wright, and Patrick Kimmons in a park, when a man came outside his home armed with intent to kill protesters. He shot a 60+ year old in the face. Point blank. He also shot several other people, 5 of whom were hospitalized, all of whom were in motorcade trying to protect the majority of protesters nearby. This was someone murdering and maiming Black Lives Matter protesters for daring to speak and march on public streets. The Portland protest community needs help: medical and funeral and legal expenses. Please help if you can.

Patrick Kimmons Autonomous Zone established in Portland, Oregon!
Late last night (June 17th), protesters in Portland barricaded the streets and declared an autonomous zone named after Patrick Kimmons, a black man murdered by Portland police in 2018 whose case was closed without a conviction for his killers. The dedication was approved by Patrick’s mother

As of right now, the occupation is only a single intersection. You can find more info, pics, and footage in this twitter thread

I’m pretty angry today.
There is a huge gathering in the Lents area of Portland, Oregon right now, because once again, the cops shot someone.  Letha Winston, Patrick Kimmons’ mother, is there. Demetria Hester is there.
I don’t have the wherewithal today, so I’m going to just share links to some people livetweeting from Lents.
People who I know are real human beings with actual feelings.  Keep in mind, it’s about a police shooting so there will be mentions of violence.  And they’ve already started threatening “impact munitions and crowd control agents”, aka chemical weapons.
Team Raccoon - just a person who cares a whole fucking lot.
Alissa Azar (an actual independent journalist)
45th is in
45th Parallel Absurdist Brigade - more people who care.
there are probably tons more, but these I can be pretty sure will be as accurate as they can be.

One of our own was arrested (and thank fuck released) in Portland. She was peacefully protesting as part of the #WallofMoms
Kristiansen said was taken into the federal building and was not told her charges or told that she was under arrest. She said they handcuffed her behind her back and took her into an elevator. Inside the elevator, she was pushed into a corner by a federal officer, she said. Kristiansen said there were four officers in the elevator with her. One told her to “stop resisting,” and she said back, “I’m 100 pounds, I’m not resisting.” She said he then yelled at her, “shut up.”
[...] Kristiansen said she is “not special,” but is speaking out about her arrest because she said it was wrongful and because federal poice “taking a very small, well dressed white lady without provocation unfortunately gets more news than the mother of a young man who was shot a few years ago who marches every Thursday in front of the justice center downtown,” referencing Letha Winston, the mother of Portland police shooting victim Patrick Kimmons.“I think more attention needs to be paid to the black moms who have been out there every single night, the mothers of the black men in Portland, who have been shot in Portland and do not have justice yet,” Kristiansen told Heavy. She said she and the other “Wall of Moms” joined the frontlines after they calls were made for white allies to put their bodies on the line.
Jenn has been my shoulder through some dark mom shit, so if her wish is that this story helps amplify the members of the black community fighting against literal fucking fascism then I am here to help

Musical Vigil for Elijah McClain., a young man killed by police. Elijah was a violinist who played music to stray cats to soothe them. A stringed musical vigil was organized in memory of Elijah in Portland, Or at Peninsula Park. Hold the police who murdered Elijah accountable for his death. “a 911 caller had reported a “suspicious person” in a ski mask, and that when officers confronted McClain — who was not armed and had not committed any kind of crime — he “resisted arrest.” In the 15 minutes that followed, the officers tackled McClain to the ground, put him in a carotid hold, and called first responders, who injected him with ketamine. He had a heart attack on the way to the hospital, and died days later, after he was declared brain dead.” Letha Winston, mother of murdered Patrick Kimmons, spoke at the event. I also played violin with the crowd. #elijahmcclain https://www.instagram.com/p/CCNcLuLhReo/?igshid=1h5wyzm781m6e

HASHTAGS / Nastashia Minto
How many hashtags do I need? Because they shoot even when my hands are up, the people who need to stand won’t even take a knee. How many hashtags do I need? Because these dead bodies are no longer just in the streets, but now schools, and yoga studios places we never thought they would be. How many hashtags do I need? Because 27 years of waiting to say something, they say is too long, and the next day is too fast. No one gets a pass so I guess I’ll hashtag me too! How many hashtags do I need? Because in my life I dare not compare. Only brown face in the room, everyone stares at our puffy hair hashtag don’t touch my hair. How many hashtags do I need? RIP, RIP, RIP, please don’t hashtag and RIP me. I’m tired of hearing and seeing dead brown bodies. Having harsh words and visuals Seeping into the crevices of our mental state. Imprisoning us at higher rates in this physical place.   How many hashtags do I need? #sayhername Sandra Bland #sayhisname Patrick Kimmons #sayhisname Herbert Gilbert (Aka Pop) #metoo Dr. Ford #metoo Amber Wyatt #metoo. No, really me too! #bebold Harriet Tubman #bebold Rosa Parks #bebold Malcolm X #bebold Martin Luther King Jr. #bebold Angela Davis #bebold Maya Angelou #bebold you be bold! How many hashtags do I need? Because now is the time to create paths and lay pavement! So, stand firm, be bold and make statements!!! ⁂ Nastashia Minto has read at Unchaste Readers Series, Neon Dream, Grief Rites, incite, Tell Me A Story, and Stand Up, Speak Out and Read. On July 25th, youth abolitionists are calling for a national and global march against the institution of policing. We are demanding justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Stephon Clark, Philando Castille, Eric Garner, Quanice Hayes, Patrick Kimmons, Sean Monterrosa and the thousands more taken by the hands of racist police. Time and time again, the neo-liberal state has offered promises of “reform” with no real action ever taken. The time for discussing reform is over, we need full abolition for our communities to be safe and free from rampant police terror.
We are calling on all abolitionists, youth or non-youth, to coordinate mass protests on July 25th to show the world that the fire of this uprising is still burning strong, and that flames will just keep getting bigger until the police state has been dismantled once and for all.
This call to action comes right after Trump has announced he will be sending the federal troops that have been occupying Portland, Oregon, all across the nation. The Federal Government has already waged war against Portland, which has been protesting everyday for 50 days straight, and now feds are going to war against protesters everywhere in an attempt to take control and snuff out the fire of this uprising. We must become more powerful than them.
Form an affinity group.
Coordinate an action.
Get tactical.
Mask up.
Bring a friend.
Show up.
Please spread this message as far as you can! Take a stand to resist martial law!

you all remember Patrick Kimmons, right?
His mother was one of the first non-cops on the scene, and she’s pissed.
Even though, as the PPB was so adamant about pointing out, the person they killed *this time* was white.

Saturday night we heard sirens nearby that did not stop. We thought there was a large fire. I knew something terrible was happening. Three blocks from our home, where my kid has soccer practice, six people were shot and June Knightly “T-Rex,” a disabled 60-year old local activist was shot point blank by a white man who opened fire on a group of women helping direct traffic so a peaceful march @justiceforpatrickkimmons led by Letha Kimmons, mother of Patrick Kimmons slain by Portland Police in 2018, could begin in response to the recent murder of Amir Locke by police in Minneapolis. Letha’s marches feature music and children, [see footage I took last year]. It never started, because the shooter was primed for violence as a follower of extremist Andy Ngo who had incited his followers the previous week to be prepared for a violent Antifa march in Portland. He didn’t stop shooting until a lawful carrying protestor shot him. He has been charged with murder and assault; he is still in the hospital. The “both sides” narrative pushed by the police was that he was a “homeowner defending his property” in the face of violent protestors who “took evidence” even though they confiscated GoPro footage of the event. It’s some real colonizer energy to elevate property ownership at all, but the truth is he is not. He’s a longtime Bitcoin miner, ghost gun enthusiast and member of the Furry community who started out mistrusting cops but became increasingly enraged by the trends in Portland including houseless neighbors nearby, the Black Lives Matter movement, and pandemic protections like masking. Shout out to locals + the Furries who, unlike the cops, ID’d the shooter. It's dangerous to speak of him as “crazy” when many of his opinions are likely shared by a lot of our neighbors: rage at houseless people going through our trash, the unsightliness of tent cities, anxious attachment to authority figures like the police and white Jesus, the sense of privileges being limited to protect others landing like an authoritarian threat to “our freedoms,” and an abject hatred of the poor.
