90 year old Indian woman going to her ancestral home in Pakistan after 75 years
90 year old Indian woman going to her ancestral home in Pakistan after 75 years
India Pakistan Partition Story: The years old dream of 90 year old old lady of India is going to be fulfilled. After about 75 years, she is going to her ancestral home in Pakistan. Reena Chhibber Verma left her ancestral home in Rawalpindi, Pakistan 75 years ago during the partition. He had tried to go to Pakistan several times after partition, but his visa was rejected every time. Finally this…

thinking about the identity crisis i went though as a kid cuz my parents had told me very simply that my mom was pashtun and my dad was punjabi and they were both from peshawar and that was that. understandably they had simplified it so much for me cuz i was a kid, but whenever other brown people asked where i was from or "what are you" and i mentioned punjabi and they'd be like oh wow where? lahore? and i'd just be like nope lol peshawar and they would press me about how my dad could be punjabi if he was from peshawar and i just didn't have an answer. when i got a little older, i started saying well borders are manmade, you don't necessarily have to be from one ethnicity cuz you're from a certain area (and i was right! i just didn't know at the time why i was right).
as i got older and i found out more about our family background, it all made more sense to me as i came to know that the punjabi side of us was allegedly from a great-great-great grandfather from gurdaspur who had moved to bannu way back when. but as my interest in linguistics and anthropology and history grew, i realized that my old explanation of "borders are manmade" was true anyway!!! prime examples being speakers of Hindko and Derawali, as well as the Hazarewal community in general. anyways, i could go on about this, but it's all just so endlessly fascinating that i wouldn't know where to stop so i'll stop now.

I saw this on Instagram and I am sorry but I agree 💯 .
They we're given Gaza and Jordan and forced the Jews to leave it .
Did it bring peace ?
Did it bring tranquility?
NO 👎
They still murdered Jews and have for 76 years .
Oct 7th was horrific it was a true genocide ( not the fake one ) that Gazans claim .
However , Jews have been murdered for decades by Palestinians and various terrorists cells .
How can there be a two state solution when the Palestinians won't acknowledge you ?
Feels it is ok to murder you ?
Teach there children to hate you so the next generation is just as evil as they are .
They are a death cult 🫣
They hate Israel more than they ever Loved their own children.
Hamas could've built bomb shelters ( like Israel did for the're people ) to save lives ,but THEY DIDN'T.
They use these people as shields and hide underneath them .
However , don't forget it was the Gazans who spit on dead bodies of girls as they we're paraded on the streets.
Palestinians who helped Hamas murder innocent men women children and babies.
Hostages were and some still are held in Gazan homes for Pete's sake .
How in the world do you have a two state solution with that ???
Did it bring peace when they got Gaza ?
NO 👎
They still murdered Jews !
They don't want a two state solution and you shouldn't either .
How in the world can they co exist after everything that they have done for decades to Israel . Israel is the only Jewish nation in the world, yet their are 52 Muslim countries ( if not more ) there is only one Jewish Nation.
Israel has roughly 2 million Arabs living in it.
How many Muslim countries has Jews living in it 🤔
....................we all know that Answer
.....................now don't we !
You don't see Jews going to Iran Iraq Syria Afghanistan Yemen Pakistan and demanding there land for themselves.
Palestina was named by the Romans not Arabs .
The Romans didn't get rid of all the Jews when they renamed Israel Palestina.
I wish we could all live in peace and harmony and support each other but that can't happen until they accept Israel and stop murdering the Jewish people.
Israel is a tiny nation 🇮🇱
Israel is the only Jewish nation in the world 🇮🇱
Israel just wants to be left alone and live our lives without rockets every hour coming into Israel ,suicide bombers , teenagers with knives stabbing Jewish people to death and the list goes on and on and on.
The Jewish people should not apologize too exist
The Jewish people have lived and died and fought for there ancestral homeland for thousands of years and ...................
Israel is not going anywhere!
Sorry ,not Sorry !

HEY DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE ASSASSINATION OF A PROMINENT SIKH LEADER IN CANADA AND WHY THIS MATTERS?
I generally don't like to write current events-y stuff here, but since I'm not seeing any people talking about this in my corner of this hellsite, I figured I might as well.
DISCLAIMER: For the record, I'm part Punjabi, raised culturally Sikh in the United States, I don't actively practice Sikhism, and I'm writing this assuming a non-Sikh, non-Desi audience that knows little to nothing about Indian politics. I am trying to be as factually accurate as possible but if certain information is incorrect, I will correct this post because a) this is an ongoing issue so the information I have right now may not turn out to be correct and b) my memory is fallible and while I did try to fact-check the background information I remembered, many of these historical events have accounts that differ drastically from each other, so it is difficult to establish a definite truth. This post was written and last updated 25 September 2023.
So, the basic facts of what happened:
Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed on 18 June 2023. He was a proponent of the Khalistan movement. In the past week or so, Canadian government officials have accused India of orchestrating his assassination.
Khalistan? What's That and Why Does It Matter?
Like quite a few things in Desi politics, the idea of Khalistan can be traced back to the Partition. At the heart of the Partition, the idea was that Pakistan is for the Muslims and India is for the Hindus.
However, India is not exclusively populated by Hindus, no matter how hard Modi and the BJP* try to make it a Hindu-only nation through their Hindu nationalist policies. Among other religious minority groups, many Sikhs had to made the new India their home, because of the religious persecution they would face in Pakistan. The Radcliffe Line (the line of partition) runs right through Punjab, the ancestral homeland of, among others, most Sikhs. In Punjab, during the Partition, Hindus, Sikhs, and Muslims carried out sectarian violence against each other.
What this means is that a lot of Sikhs were displace from their homeland and subjected to discrimination and violence based on their religion in both Pakistan and India. As a result, some members of the Sikh community started calling for a new nation to be carved out of the Punjab regions in Pakistan and India. This new nation was to be a Sikh nation, much like Pakistan for the Muslims and India for the Hindus, and it was to be called Khalistan.
(Little bit of anecdotal trivia: apparently identifying as Punjabi first and Indian second when describing ethnic background is more common among Punjabi Sikhs, due to Sikh efforts to show their connection to Punjabi in an attempt to make Khalistan a Sikh nation in the Punjabi region.)
Needless to say, the Indian government did not and does not like the idea of a Sikh nation and sees the idea of it as a terrorist threat.
*Bharatiya Janata Party, the Hindu nationalist party currently ruling over most of India.
Operation Blue Star and Indira Gandhi
As part of this rising call for a Sikh nation, Sikh militant groups sprung up. Indira Gandhi's government wanted to arrest one of the most prominent leaders of a Sikh militant movement. However, he and his supporters were holed up in the holiest site in Sikhism, the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
On one of the holiest days in Sikhism, the martyrdom day of Guru Arjan Dev, the Indian military began their attack on the Golden Temple, known as Operation Blue Star. Long story short, Sikh pilgrims were killed during both the fighting and in extrajudicial killings by the military afterwards.
In anger at how Gandhi's government had carried out Operation Blue Star, two of her Sikh bodyguards assassinated her. Anti-Sikh pogroms then occurred, with independent estimates of the number of Sikhs killed ranging from 8,000 to 17,000.
This only made tensions between the Sikh community and the Indian government worse; I see this as a defining moment in how the government of India responds to the Khalistan movement and both Sikh extremist violence and peaceful support.
Oh and did I mention yet that the Indian government has outlawed the Khalistan movement?
The law that does this dates back to 1967, by the way.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar
And so now we come to the story of the recently-assassinated Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Due to Khalistani activism being outlawed in India, many Khalistani activists have settled abroad. This includes Nijjar, who became a Canadian citizen in 2007 and had first come to Canada to apply for asylum after having been arrested by the Indian police in connection with his pro-Khalistan stance. He continued his Sikh and Khalistani activism in Canada until he was killed in the parking lot of the gurdwara he belonged to by two masked gunmen.
The Canadian government recently alleged that the Indian government war involved in the killing of Nijjar, but has not yet provided firm evidence.
Why Does This Matter?
Obviously, as a culturally Sikh person, it matters to me because this assassination is part of a legacy of violence targeting my community due to perceived associations with terrorism. (Yes, there are some Sikh extremists and terrorists, but the overwhelming majority of Sikhs are neither extremists nor terrorists.)
But this has ramifications that everyone should care about.
Canada and India have recently done tit-for-tat diplomatic expulsions due to the Canadian government's allegations
The US may also get dragged into this because Canada alleged that American intelligence gave them some information necessary to prove the involvement of the India government
The UK may also get dragged into this because they, too, have a sizeable Punjabi Sikh community that includes multiple MPs and the government has historically had strong relationships with both Canada and India
Despite the BJP's involvement in anti-Muslim violence, Modi and his government still enjoy a cozy relationship with many Western nations; this may start to change, although change is unlikely as Western governments see being allied with India as key to countering Chinese influence
If India is proven to be behind the assassination, this could be bad for other Khalistani activists in the Sikh diaspora because it means the Indian government could potentially target and kill them, too
This is important. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, and this isn't an isolated incident. I know I probably didn't do a great job explaining this, but it's hard to summarize about 550 years of oppression and violence and politics and culture and how that has manifested over the past 80 years, leading to the murder of a prominent leader in the Sikh diaspora.
For further reading on this, I'd suggest this BBC article, which includes information on some other Khalistani activists recently killed.
Anyhow, I'll keep trying to follow the news on this and update this post as needed, likely through reblogs.

There is no other home but this March 5–June 19, 2022
Areez Katki and Khadim Ali
In an exploration of the profound themes of family, folklore, tradition, and Middle Eastern heritage through textiles and fiber art, Areez Katki and Khadim Ali come together in the exhibition titled "There is no other home but this." This exhibition is a continuation of Govett-Brewster's commitment to showcasing art that delves into the concepts of home, family, and ancestral connections.
Areez Katki and Khadim Ali, both residing in Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia, have roots tracing back to the Persian Empire (559 BCE–331 BCE), a region encompassing modern-day Iran, Egypt, Turkey, and parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan. They share a common heritage, having been raised with Persian literature, language (Farsi), and, in Areez's case, an initiation into the indigenous Zoroastrian faith. Their creative works draw inspiration from this shared legacy and intertwine it with their personal experiences. These pieces symbolize themes of royalty, battles, and legends, often reminiscent of illustrated manuscripts.
Furthermore, my own artworks resonate conceptually with these themes, as I explore displacement, culture, and the integration of poetry into my creative process.

I just saw this post of yours from late May where you talk about how the saporians are "complex villains." I understand how Varian and Lady Caine have complex reasons behind doing what they do, but the saporians? Can you explain?
The exact quote, for those wondering, is: "I completely agree, that the subplot with the Saporians started out complex and then got turned into 'generic Big Bad'."
It would be easy to say that any villain is cut-and-dry when it comes to their motivations. One could easily break Varian and Lady Caine down to the bare bones of, "They felt wronged, so they retaliated."
In the case of the Separatists, their complexity goes back generations. They are a people who feel displaced. The Separatists of Saporia formed back when General Shampanier married Herz Der Sonne and merged her kingdom (Saporia) with his (Corona), and the part that was Saporia was now considered Corona. Even though it was a move made by their leader and not under any sort of duress, they resented it, and wanted not only their land back, but for the entire joined kingdom to be Saporia instead of Corona.
Even though Andrew and the other Separatists weren't developed very well doesn't mean that the very concept of a displaced outlier group isn't complex. Look at real world examples, such as the conflict between Israel and Pakistan. From the Separatists' point of view, they just want their ancestral home back, and want the marriage between Shampanier and Der Sonne to have not ousted them.

A dive into the archives
Tumblr media
Image 1: My maternal family at a wedding Dawat in post-partition Lahore, Pakistan (1977) The groom, who happens to be my Mamoo (maternal uncle) is adorned with shiny headwear and garlands sewn with cash notes. The colourful, patterned shamiana tent veiling the Dawat is a common occurrence in banquet halls even today. Dawats also serve as the ideal opportunity to get multiple family members and kin together for a group portrait, a crucial and vital method of documenting a visual record of humans that are often overlooked and erased from history and whose lived experiences have been minimized and rendered invisible by colonial hegemonies.
Tumblr media
Image 2: My maternal grandfather, F.D Chaudhry, a soldier in the British Army, hosting his British and German friends at a small Dawat in post-partition Lahore, Pakistan (1950) These are foreign families that chose to remain in Pakistan after the partition of the country from India, but have since returned to their respective homelands.
Tumblr media
Image 3: My mother, Mohtarma Rubina Magsi, celebrating Shab-e-Barat, a major Dawat for the global Muslim community, honoured in the month of Sha'ban in the Islamic calendar (1980s) After finishing our prayers in new clothes, we would head outside into the garden to play with sparklers and light little diyas (oil lamps made from clay) all around the boundary walls of our home. The deceased are honoured on this day and the festival is celebrated in unique ways in Muslim countries around the world, depending on the country and culture.
Tumblr media
Image 4: Mohtarma Rubina Magsi surrounded by her singing and clapping women friends ( Late 1970s) They are taking turns playing the dhol (drum). Often a sturdy, silver spoon is also hit onto the center of the dhol to add depth to the music. Some guests may even reach for a dufflee (tambourine) and clap it against their henna stained palms. The music can range from orally transmitted folk songs to Bollywood hits from across the border. Healthy competition is fostered as guests attempt to outdo one another with an impressively long array of memorized songs.
Tumblr media
Image 5: A duo collage of community elders veiling my hair and face with heavy garlands of vibrant, red rose flowers to mark the Rasm-e-Ameen, a Dawat hosted to honour the completion of formal Quranic education. The customary prayers are followed by a large buffet style banquet feast. (1993)
Tumblr media
Image 6: Guests enjoying their banquet dinner on a round table after the Rasm-e-Ameen. A waiter holding a tray with glasses watches over the banquet tables to ensure the guests are looked after. (1993)
Tumblr media
Image 7: A women prioritized Dawat-e-Milad in praise of Prophet Muhammad, hosted at our home in Karachi, Pakistan. Though veiling of the hair is not an imposition in Pakistan, even at women prioritized religious, cultural and spiritual events such as these, both Muslims and non-Muslims loosely cover their hair momentarily, out of respect. (1995)
Tumblr media
Image 8: A birthday banquet to honour the day I was born. It is interesting to note, that while traditional, cultural garments are prioritized for certain events, like the Dawat-e-Milad, Rasm-e-Ameen or a wedding Dawat, western clothing, games and food is often engaged at Dawats such as birthdays and graduations. (1994)
Tumblr media
Image 9: Generation after generation, the visibility of women in documentations of family life has increased. This is a family photograph taken on my birthday Dawat (1993) with my mother at the center, surrounded by children, and caregivers from the Philippines and our ancestral lands, Jhal Magsi, Balochistan. I was truly raised by a multi-generational, diverse village of people from all corners of the world. While some members of our family are wearing western clothing, others are dressed in traditional, cultural garments and have chosen to veil their hair.
Tumblr media
Image 9: A spiritual, Sufi Dawat at the Taji Shrine in Meva Shah, Karachi. My mother is adorning our family's Sufi saint (Baba Anwar Shah Taji) with heavy garlands of red roses. (1980) While flowers are given feminine traits in various cultures around the world, in many South and Central Asian countries, such as India, Pakistan and Nepal, flowers are a gender neutral way of showing love and adoration through the art of ornamentation. After the customary Sufi rituals are complete, the congregation gathers side by side on the floor to consumer Langar, a meal that is served to everyone in attendance, at no cost. The Langar menu can vary from week to week, consisting of curries, rice dishes, naans and sweets, and no one is turned away from the doors of the shrines when Langar is served. Whether cis or trans, male or female, able or disabled, rich or poor, local or foreign, everyone is welcome here. In some shrines the genders are segregated.
Most Dawats in Pakistan mark important life milestones, like births, birthdays, weddings, graduations and are also influenced by cultural traditions and religious rituals, varying from household to household, depending on cast, clan, socioeconomic standing, province and religion.
There are some motifs and symbols that make a recurring appearance, era after era, such as rose petals and night blooming jasmine flowers, shamiana tents, cauldrons of Biryani, unisex garlands and head coverings made with either cash or flowers (or both), various forms of veiling (with both textiles and flowers), the dhol (drum) and of course, endless cups of Chai. Of the various significant Dawats that take place throughout the year, apart from events like birthdays and weddings, certain religious Dawats like Shab-e-Baraat (a major festival for Muslims celebrated in the month of Sha'ban, the eighth month of the Islamic calendar) Rasm-e-Ameen (formal completion of Quranic education), Urs (death anniversaries of Saints and Mystics), Milad (events fostered in praise of Prophet Muhammad) and Niyaz (Meditative chanting and prayers followed by distribution of food amongst the needy) also encompass specific rituals and customs. As visible in the archives, there was also a healthy mix of retaining local, familial customs and traditions, while also engaging with clothing, games, food and rituals from cultures outside of Pakistan.
For example, every New Year’s Eve, it was customary in our home to consume a large feast of purely Filipino food, made by our caregiver, Flordeliza Sauza. Right as the clock would strike midnight, you best believe, we would be shoving Siopao, Pansit and Chicken Adobo with garlic rice into our excited, hungry mouths. Similarly, Chinese food was also a staple, especially at birthday parties and weddings. My wedding Dawat feast in Karachi included several desi Kababs, Curries and Puloas originally devised in the royal kitchens of India, but many Chinese dishes were also served, such as Chicken Manchurian, Beef Chilli, Shrimp Dumplings and Vegetable Fried Rice. This is reflective of a society that is open to global influences.
Women have been at the forefront of cultural continuity in Pakistan, as well as in the diaspora. Religiously inclined Dawats, such as the Milad and the Rasm-e-Ameen often take place in women prioritized spaces, with multi-generational guests in attendance, fostering community and togetherness. One of my favourite moments from the Milad Dawat has to do with guests being showered with delicate, soft sprinkles of rose water, while standing side by side, singing and praying in a unique moment of women's solidarity. In some Milad Dawats, guests are not only showered with droplets of Rose Water, they are also covered with petals from red roses, making the experience truly immersive and embodied.
