New Brunswick community raises Pride flag for first time
The town of Salisbury, N.B., got a bit more colourful this week.
The Pride flag was raised in front of the municipality's office on Tuesday after town council received requests from citizens to recognize June as Pride Month.
Town CAO Austin Henderson said they had some residents who were wondering what the town was doing and if they would consider doing something to acknowledge Pride.
“They also thought that it was important and brought that request up to council, and ultimately it was discussed at the following meeting which was held on Monday and now the flag is flying,” said Henderson.
Community leader Dave-Allan Gouthro was the first Salisbury resident to make the request, sending a letter on May 18.
Gouthro says Salisbury is a great place to raise a family and is incredibly inclusive and welcoming.
“But it hasn't raised the pride flag yet, but communities around Salisbury have. I chair the PSSC (Parent School Support Committee) at Salisbury Regional School and obviously Policy 713 has been the talk, not of the town, but of the province, and I wanted to make sure that we were doing things to show that we supported inclusivity as well,” said Gouthro.
Jessica Hope also reached out, asking the town to acknowledge Pride Month with at least a post on social media.
She said she’s lived in the Salisbury area for many years and has never seen Pride celebrated, let alone acknowledged.
“This is important to myself because I want to see that everyone feels safe and included in the town of Salisbury. I want my child to know that the town cares about our family members and friends who are part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community,” said Hope in an email.
Gouthro was surprised the decision was agreed to so quickly.
“We have a town council that's very dedicated to the community,” said Gouthro. “They're very, very active in the community. I'm always impressed with what they do.”
Henderson said council thought it was important to celebrate the diversity and demonstrate the inclusivity of the community by raising the flag.
The town plans on coming up with a flag policy in the months to come to recognize future special events.

SciCrop ganha prêmio para criar Green Pixel
A SciCrop, startup de big data analytics para o agronegócio, foi escolhida pelo fundo internacional de fomento à inovação agrícola Land Innovation Fund através do Programa Soja Sustentável do Cerrado (PSSC), fruto da parceria entre o hub de inovação AgTech Garage e o Land Innovation Fund (LIF), com apoio estratégico da Embrapii e do Centro de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento em Telecomunicações (CPQD), para criar o primeiro Mapa do ESG do Brasil, o Green Pixel. A solução será desenvolvida em blockchain CPQD Trace e vai monitorar por geoprocessamento de imagens via satélite áreas a serem preservadas no bioma cerrado visando incentivar fazendeiros e agricultores a preservar florestas e vegetação nativa em suas propriedades, através do apoio de grandes empresas que precisam avançar em seus desafios de neutralização de carbono, além de promover a ação de ONGs para desenvolvimento social.
A SciCrop foi uma das quatro startup selecionadas para receber o aporte financeiro do Startup Finance Facility (SFF), iniciativa inédita de gestão e fomento a inovações que contribuem para uma cadeia de suprimentos da soja sustentável, livre de desmatamento e conversão de vegetação nativa. O SFF dispõe de R＄3,4 milhões para catalisar o desenvolvimento, a testagem e a implementação de soluções. Com o investimento recebido, o Green Pixel que deve estar no ar no primeiro trimestre de 2023.
O primeiro bioma a ser protegido e desenvolvido pelo Green Pixel será o Cerrado, no entanto, o objetivo dos fundadores é expandir para o território brasileiro com um todo. "No bioma brasileiro Cerrado, existe um grande problema decorrente do uso territorial: o desequilíbrio do desenvolvimento socioambiental. Em um mesmo ambiente existem grandes produtores de grãos, que geram riqueza para o país e proporcionam a produção de alimentos para o mundo e pequenos produtores e famílias que praticam agricultura e pecuária de subsistência. Ambos os grupos usam a terra e o meio ambiente como fonte primária de renda, mas entre eles existe uma grande diferença de distribuição de renda e um abismo social. Essas diferenças acabam resultando no uso não sustentável do solo, o que coloca em risco o bioma, além de aumentar a vulnerabilidade de parte da população", comenta José Damico, CEO e fundador da SciCrop.
Para resolver a equação, o Green Pixel pretende buscar o investimento da iniciativa privada, tais como bancos e grandes empresas que têm negócios de forte impacto ambiental, além de indústrias que em sua operação fazem grande emissão de gases de efeito estufa, e precisam tomar ações de ESG para promover a sustentabilidade e diminuir a pegada de carbono. "Vamos dividir o território brasileiro em Pixels de 10x10 metros e ofertaremos smart contracts ao setor privado, que comprará pixels territoriais representando as áreas de preservação no cerrado ou a serem recuperadas (excedentes as que legalmente já devem ser protegidas), especificamente dentro de propriedades produtoras de grão. O objetivo principal é o combate ao desmatamento do bioma do Cerrado", explica Damico.
O valor investido no Green Pixel pela iniciativa privada será aplicado de três formas: 60% para serviços tecnológicos de parceiros cadastrados para auxiliar a produção de alta produtividade de grãos, em conformidade com o combate ativo ao desmatamento; 30% será direcionado a ONGs para projetos sociais na região - que criem oportunidades a alunos de escolas rurais para trabalharem no setor ambiental; e 10% será para custos de monitoramento recorrente das áreas produtivas e de preservação, operacionalização da plataforma, emissão de smart contracts na blockchain CPQD Trace, além da intermediação de recursos aos prestadores de serviços.
O Green Pixel usará tecnologia blockchain somada a geoprocessamento de imagens por satélites para garantir e comprovar a proteção do bioma e o combate ao desmatamento na região. O emprego desta tecnologia permite fazer tudo de forma remota, mensurável e com rastreabilidade. O smart contract em blockchain assegura o registro irrevogável de preservação das áreas protegidas em um período de tempo e descreve os produtores envolvidos, as empresas compradoras do Green Pixel e que regiões estão protegendo, além de descrever as ONGs que participam do projeto e que levarão benefícios tangíveis ao local.
Com o projeto, ter área protegida será visto pelos agentes da cadeia como vantagem competitiva e fator de transformação tecnológica aos produtores, além de promover impacto social regional. "Não existe forma de combater o desmatamento sem ofertar ajuda social para a região", enfatiza Damico.
__A SciCrop tem se destacado no mercado como uma das empresas mais inovadoras, com o uso de Big Data Analytics e Inteligência Artificial no agronegócio. Foi a primeira agtech residente no Google For Startups, além de ter sido validada em programas de aceleração da Endeavor e Deloitte.
