I get that the church needs to be more inclusive, but how can it move forward with the proclamation hanging out there?
Why would the Proclamation on the Restoration stop the Church from being more inclusive?
I know you meant the Family Proclamation, but I decided to reference the most recent proclamation to show that proclamations don't define or restrict the Church.
Proclamations are not binding, they are not scriptures, they are not revelations. They are simply statements made to the world as opposed to statements or declarations which are aimed at members of the LDS Church.
Plus, there's a big difference between how the Family Proclamation has been used and what it actually says. It doesn't reference queer people even once! There's even an opt out for queer people: "circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation."
I wouldn't be surprised if one day we look back at the 25 years when the Church focused on the Family Proclamation as a big distraction when we should have been focusing on the Savior and the commandment to love. Above everything we are to love other people.
—————————————————————
There's been 6 official proclamations, do you know any of them other than the Proclamation on the Family?
1841 - Proclamation to the Saints Scattered Abroad - Announces the creation of the city of Nauvoo and encourages all church members to move to the city
1845 - Nine months after the murder of Joseph Smith, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles issued this proclamation to fulfill a January 1841 revelation directing Joseph Smith to "make a solemn proclamation of my gospel" to "all the nations of the earth." This proclamation announced to the world that God's kingdom had been restored to earth and called upon all to repent and embrace the restored gospel
1865 - This proclamation corrected doctrinal errors about the nature of God and officially announced the First Presidency as the sole source of any new doctrine. It was a rebuke of Orson Pratt, who then encouraged everyone to destroy things he had written which were alluded to in the proclamation
1980 - A Sequicentenial Proclamation - Issued on the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Church, and is a testimony of the restoration
1995 - The Family: A Proclamation to the World - This is a statement on family, marriage, gender roles, and human sexuality. It is by far the most well-known of all the church's proclamations, it has been referenced many times during General Conferences and filed in amicus briefs, and members were encouraged to hang it in their homes. It was created in response to the possibility of gay marriage becoming legal in Hawaii
2020 - A Bicentennial Proclamation - Issued for the 200th anniversary of the First Vision, and it's a declaration that the restoration is ongoing with continuing revelations. This proclamation was made with much fanfare, including a video from the Sacred Grove and asking all members to join in the Hosanna Shout, and then it quickly faded into obscurity. I don't think I've ever heard it referenced in Sacrament Mtg or Sunday School

a timeline of major events leading up to and following the mormon rebellion
1839- the mormons, fleeing missouri, start their own super special theocratic city state of nauvoo
july 1844- having a super special theocratic city state culminates in its mayor-prophet-general being murdered
still 1844- after a struggle between different factions over succession, brigham young becomes the new president of the church and prophet. planning starts as to Where To Go and How
1846- the trip to utah starts and they winter in omaha
1847- HELL YEAH DESERET FOREVER BABY! time to establish a theocracy in the desert in that area that mexico owns on paper, but really, GOD owns it ;)
february 1848- control of deseret is officially transferred to the united states in the aftermath of the mexican american war
later 1848- young and his associates draft a petition to the US government for a territorial government headed by himself and others. they don't end up submitting it to the united states government, though, because of fears that a territorial government would not give them enough freedom. they will wait it out for either statehood or independence
1849- the government is declared as "the free and independent state of deseret" to remain so until the united states admits them as a state. which especially pre civil war would have given them a TON of leeway over what they're allowed to do. like keep a lot of their We're a Desert Theocracy With a Governor-President-Prophet in Charge!
1850- the us government doesn't care about your desert theocracy or the name you want to give it. you're the territory of utah and you're gonna LIKE IT! we'll let you keep your guy as governor though. i guess
1850-1851- non-mormons traveling to oregon and california winter in utah and have a Very Bad Time. people are not nice to them. the court system is BAD and the systems are rigged against the federal officers brought in to do these jobs.
brigham young tries to rally the different native american tribes in the region to his cause, because mormon theology teaches that they're also lost israelites. but he didn't consider any of their actual motivations or try to cater to those so beyond a few conversions and some fair weather friends who will work with anyone for the most money, he gets No Alliances TM
1852- polygamy is PUBLIC now! orson pratt let the rest of the world know that it's a thing we do and now we have to publicly defend it! ruh roh
1856- HEYOOO WE'RE DOING RELIGIOUS REVIVAL! right here! right now! you're confessing to sins! and you're confessing to sins! and YOU'RE confessing to sins! ones you probably didn't commit! heyooo come get your charismatic revivalism. time to atone for your sins with blood and then you'll get into heaven!
there were quite a few different recorded murders of mormons trying to leave at this time, including the famous parrish murders, where a father and one of his sons were killed trying to leave the territory. the other son escaped and ran to his uncle's, where he had to pretend nothing happened.
1857- mr. young you have been removed as governor of this territory, effective immediately.
brigham young: actually we are our OWN country none shall pass through our lands without a permit and we totally have talked to all of the native american tribes and they all will do exactly as i ask and i only hold them off as a gesture of goodwill ;) (this is not accurate! and we all know that!)
september 1857- this was the mountain meadows massacre. i'm not going to try to make a joke about the mountain meadows massacre because from around a hundred and twenty people traveling from arkansas to oregon were murder in cold blood AFTER they surrendered to the mormon militia. there isn't a single joke to be made here, and this event was covered up in various forms for a very long time.
the mormon militia burns and destroys US military supplies as the military escort comes with the new governor.
the church forces residents of the north and salt lake city to relocate south with the intention of destroying the settlements to make a statement. while they don't end up following through with the plan to destroy these homes, the forced relocation still happens.
when the military and the new governor arrives, the new governor decides to be The Lamest Stooge to Ever Lame. and basically lets brigham young tell him what to do and what to say, continuing a very similar line of power to what was already there. not to mention the presidential pardon that young and all involved got for most of the Illegal Dealings that they participated in that are known at the time.
the military isn't able to stay very long because the president has decided that accepting the "new governor" is basically enough, and with the looming threat of a proper civil war (which is just on the cusp of breaking out) there's not enough resources to expend on utah.
a judge tries very hard to uncover the truth of what happened at mountain meadows, which has been blamed entirely on native americans (only a few of which participated, all as free agents separate from a tribal affiliation) and he's not able to make things happen before the military is entirely recalled and along with that, any authority he had to make these things happen.
he DOES go on to help found nevada and take a large swath of territory out of brigham young's gaping maw, though, so that's. something.
i need to do more research from some additional sources but like. jesus CHRIST the... everything here. it's just so much
1877- brigham young finally drops dead and loosens his hold on the territory of utah

So, I wanna get back on my Owl House Mormon AU. Idk what to write next tho, so I'm just gonna give an outline of what I'm thinking I want it to look like
Caleb & Philip Wittebane- Brothers who went to Nauvoo after their Widowed Mother joins the Church. She dies during the Riots (sickness, not violence or something like that), and Brigham Young takes them with his family. They discover a portal to the Demon Realm. Philip (aged 22) heard about the Priesthood Ban in 1852, and disowns Caleb (aged 20) for marrying Evelyn Clawthorne, because Witches aren't human (although, they were married by Orson Pratt, but Philip sees Brigham as infallible). He takes matters into his own hands, and kills Caleb
(As a Note, I am a Mormon. But Brigham Young also had some issues. He was open about them, and I'm not bashing him, simply disowning his false teachings (Racism & Blood Atonement in this case). He was a Prophet, but (according to his own words) definitely not perfect)
Luz & Camilla move to Utah to stay with Family when Luz's Dad is in the Hospital. Luz's Story goes about the same until Amity (with minor things, such as Mormon references being added). She had crushes on Girls before, but had been pushing her Bisexuality down until she couldn't avoid it, so her crushing on Amity becomes a bigger issue, eventually realizing she doesn't need to compromise between her Faith & her Love
Belos' plan is basically the same (with a more explicit religious purpose), but Luz is even more disturbed, because she's hearing the things she holds closest to her heart are being used to justify genocide. It also makes Belos more obsessed with Luz, because not only is she another human, but she's Mormon. He wants to save her, while performing an "Atonement" for the citizens of the Isles
And yeah, that's my idea for my Owl House AU. If anyone has anything they wanna add (or critique), comments are open

the British mission. John Taylor, Parley P. Pratt and Orson Hyde brought money contributed by the English Saints, a map based on John C.
Fremont's recent western expedition, and instruments for calculating latitude, elevation, temperature and barometric pressure. Chosen members of the vanguard group were gathered together, final supplies were packed, and the group was organized into military companies.
The group consisted of 143 men, including three enslaved African-American men [2] and eight members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, three women, and two children. The train contained 73 wagons, one cannon, 93 horses, 52 mules, 66 oxen, 19 cows, 17 dogs and some chickens, and carried enough supplies to fully provision the group for one year. Young divided this group into 14 companies, each with a designated captain. Apprehensive of possible danger posed by Native Americans, a militia and night guard was formed under the direction of Stephen Markham. - [x] JUNGLEWOODNETHERRACKNETHERWARTENCHANTMENTTABLECHORUSFLOWERREDSTONEREPEATERREDSTONECOMPARATORTRiPWiREHOOKCOMMANDBLOCKSTiCKYPiSTONALiENSSPECiESFAiRiESDEiTiESGODSCLOWNSROBOTSANDROiDSARTiFiCiALiNTELLiGENCESBRAiNSPOWERSiNTELLiGENCEQUOTiENTSWORMSTAPEWORMSTUBESTUMORSCANCERSHOSTSENTiTiESFUNGiSPARASiTESBACTERiASAMiCROORGANiSMSMUSHROOMSSURGERiESSCiENCESPHYSiCSWiTCHCRAFTSMAGiCSVOODOOSHOODOOSWiZARDSWARLOCKSCULTSSECRETSOCiETiSALTEREGOSiNNERDEMONSCROSSROADDEMONSMEDiCALTREATMENTS CLONES

Quote
Unequal possession of that which God has made for the benefit of all His children, is sin. All nations, kindreds, and people, are in sin because of this inequality. The Saints are still in sin so far as they approve of this unequal possession; and we shall remain in sin until we make exertions to put this inequality away from us.

Joseph Smith, False Prophet: The City of Zion...
[The] city shall be built, beginning at the temple lot, which is appointed by the finger of the Lord, in the western boundaries of the State of Missouri, and dedicated by the hand of Joseph Smith, Jun., and others with whom the Lord was well pleased. Verily this is the word of the Lord, that the city New Jerusalem shall be built by the gathering of the saints, beginning at this place, even the place of the temple, which temple shall be reared in this generation. (“Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Kirtland, Ohio, September 22 and 23, 1832,” Doctrine and Covenants 84:3, 4)
Joseph Smith spoke those prophetic words in 1832, over 150 years ago. That generation passed away without any Mormon temple being built in western Missouri, so the prophecy was false…
Even Smith’s followers who lived within that generation understood him to mean their own lifetime. Thus, nearly forty years later Apostle Orson Pratt indicated that faithful Mormons were still waiting for the prophecy to come to pass:
"God promised in the year 1832 that we should, before the generation then living had passed away, return and build up the City of Zion in Jackson County; that we should return and buld up the the temple of the Most High where we formerly laid the corner stone. He promised us that He would manifest Himself on that templt, that the glory of God should be upon it; and not only upon the temple, but within it, even a cloud by day and a flaming fire by night.
We believe in these promises as much as we believe in any promise ever uttered by the mouth of Jehovah. The Latter-day Saints just as much expect to receive a fulfillment of that promise during the generation that was in existence in 1832 as they expect that the sun will rise and set to-morrow. Why? Because God cannot lie. He will fulfill all His promises.  He has spoken, it must come to pass." (Journal of Discourses, vol. 13, p. 362).
Apostle Pratt understood Smith to mean “the generation then living,” and he expected to see a fulfillment before that generation passed away. However, in spite of his faith in Joseph Smith, the prophecy proved false. The Mormon Prophet failed the test of Deuteronomy 18:20-22.
John R. Farkas, David A. Reed, Mormons Answered Verse by Verse, p. 92, 93
Can We Trust the Prophecies of Joseph Smith?
25 years later, Heber C. Kimball still believed it “They are holy places, and they will be held sacred even as Jackson County..” “and I shall yet see the day that I will go back there, with brother Brigham and with thousands and millions of others, and we will go precisely according to the dedication of the Prophet of the living God. Talk to me about my having any dubiety on my mind about these things being fulfilled.—I am just as confident of it as I am that I am called to be a saviour of men, and no power can hinder it.” (President Heber C. Kimball, December 17, 1857 Journal of Discourses, Vol 6. p. 190).
25 years later, Elias Smith still believed it “I expect to live to be an old man, and to go back with the saints to the land of Jackson County.” (President B. Young; “God grant it.”) (1857 Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, p. 221)
29 years later, Heber C. Kimball still believed it “Brethren, I shall go to Jackson County with thousands of this people who will be faithful to their integrity; but we cannot go back until we have built some good houses.” (1861 Journal of Discourses, Vol. 8, p. 350, Disclosure by Heber C. Kimball).
29 years later, Elder George A. Smith still believed it “Who is there that is prepared for this movement back to the center stake of Zion, and where are the architects amongst us that are qualified to erect this temple and the city that will surround it.” “And let me remind you that it is predicted that this generation shall not pass away till a temple shall be built, and the glory of the Lord rest upon it, according to the promises.” (Elder George A. Smith, March 10, 1861, Journal of Discourse, Vol. 9, p. 71).
32 years later, Elder George Q. Cannon still believed it The generation in which the revelation was given, which is upwards of thirty years ago.
“The day is near when a Temple shall be reared in the Center Stake of Zion, and the Lord has said his glory shall rest on that House in this generation, that is in the generation in which the revelation was given, which is upwards of thirty years ago.” (Elder George Q. Cannon, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 10, p. 344, October 23, 1864).
38 years later, Elder Orson Pratt still believed it “We have just as much confidence in returning to Jackson County and the building of a great city that will remain there a thousand years before the earth passes away, as the Jews have in returning to Jerusalem and re-building the waste places of Palestine. In fact, we have more faith than they have; for they have been so many generations cast out of their land that their descendants have almost lost their faith in returning. But, the Latter-day Saints are fresh, as it were. There are many of the old stock, who passed through all those tribulations I have named, still living, whose faith in returning to Jackson County, and the things that are coming, is as firm and fixed as the throne of the Almighty.” (Elder Orson Pratt, in a discourse delivered in the Tabernacle, Salt Lake City, April 10, 1870. Journal of Discourses, Vol. 13, p. 138).
“God promised in the year 1832 that we should, before this generation then living had passed away, return and build up the City of Zion in Jackson County; that we should return and build up the temple of the Most High where we formerly laid the corner stone. He promised us that He would manifest Himself on that temple, that the glory of God should be upon it; and not only upon the temple, but within it, even a cloud by day and a flaming fire by night. He has spoken, it must come to pass. This is our faith.” (Elder Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 13, p. 362, May 5, 1870).
39 years later, Elder Orson Pratt still believed it “all the people that were living thirty-nine years ago have not passed away; but before they do pass away this will be fulfilled.”…”We just as much expect that a city will be built, called Zion, in the place and on the land which has been appointed by the Lord our God, and that a temple will be reared on the spot that has been selected, and the corner-stone of which has been laid, in the generation when this revelation was given; we just as much expect this as we expect the sun to rise in the morning and set in the evening; or as much as we expect to see the fulfillment of any of the purposes of the Lord our God, pertaining to the works of his hands. But say the objector, “thirty nine years have passed away.” What of that? The generation has not passed away; all the people that were living thirty-nine years ago have not passed away; but before they do pass away this will be fulfilled.” (Elder Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 14, p. 275., delivered in the New Tabernacle, Salt Lake City, April 9, 1871).
42 years later, Elder Orson Pratt still believed it “God said, in the year 1832, before we were driven out of Jackson County, in a revelation which you will find here in this book, that before that generation should all pass away, a house of the Lord should be built in that county. (Jackson County). This was given forty-two years ago. That generation then living was not only to commence a house of God in Jackson County, Missouri, but was actually to complete the same. And when it is completed the glory of God should rest upon it.” (Elder Orson Pratt, Interest Manifested, ETO p. 111).
43 years later, Elder Orson Pratt still believed it “We need not expect, from what God has revealed, that a very great number of those who were then in the Church and who were driven, will have the privilege of returning to that land.” (Elder Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 17, p. 291. February 7, 1875).
58 years later, the Church still believed it The 1890 edition of the Doctrines and Covenants, Section 84, p. 289 included a footnote that read, “… a generation does not all pass away in one hundred years.” This footnote has since been deleted in more recent editions.
103 years later, Joseph Fielding Smith still believed it “I firmly believe that there will be some of that generation who were living when this revelation was given who shall be living when this temple is reared. And I do not believe that the Lord has bound himself to accomplish the matter within 100 years from 1832.” “I have full confidence in the word of the Lord and that it shall not fail.” (Joseph Fielding Smith, The Way to Perfection, Salt Lake City, p. 270).
Finally, after 140 years, the Mormon Church itself admitted this was a false prophecy. No temple was ever built on this property and the close-dated, unconditional prophecy never came true. Joseph Fielding Smith finally admitted there was no expectation this prophecy would ever come to pass:
“It may be reasonable to assume that in giving this revelation to the prophet the Lord did have in mind the generation of people who would still be living with the one hundred years from the time of announcement of the revelation, and that they would enjoy the blessings of the temple, and a glorious cloud would rest upon it. It is also reasonable to believe that no soul living in 1832 is still living in mortality on the earth.” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Answers to Gospel Questions, Vol. 4. p. 112)
The Mormon prophets, apostles and elders who followed Joseph repeatedly proclaimed this prediction would come true in a literal generation; they said the Independence temple would be built before they died. It simply never happened.

saw @doodledandy's post on the fact that the church is trying to retcon the "we will be gods of our own worlds" thing and, naturally, I just had to look into it. I didn't want to hijack her post, since the fact that they're retconning it isn't really her point, so here’s what I found.
Apparently the church has been fighting against this since at least 2014. They like to blame the BoM musical for spreading the "misconception".
I also found some idiot on exmormon reddit who, a couple years ago, spammed the comments of a post about this with his idea that it's just exmos influencing each other into believing that that was what we were taught. At one point, he even tells someone to look up the mandela effect.
But here's my big issue with all that- I left as a teenager, 5 years before the BoM musical came out. I spent much of my childhood planning how I would rule my planet. I even wrote some of it down and eventually put that paper in a binder that held all of my YW stuff. I haven't added anything to that binder since 2007, the last time I regularly attended church. I wouldn't discuss church stuff with any exmos until at least 3 years later.
Also, there's the slight issue of-
brigham young saying: “All those who are counted worthy to be exalted and to become Gods, even the sons of God, will go forth and have earths and worlds like those who framed this and millions on millions of others.”
spencer w kimball, with: “Each one of you has it within the realm of his possibility to develop a kingdom over which you will preside as its king and god. You will need to develop yourself and grow in ability and power and worthiness, to govern such a world with all of its people.”
joseph fielding smith, who mentioned: “and perhaps through our faithfulness to have the opportunity of building worlds and peopling them.”
lorenzo snow, who taught that: “When two Latter-day Saints are united together in marriage, promises are made to them concerning their offspring that reach from eternity to eternity. They are promised that they shall have the power and the right to govern and control and administer salvation and exaltation and glory to their offspring, worlds without end.”
orson pratt, who said: “As our Father and God begat us, sons and daughters, so will we rise immortal, males and females, and beget children, and, in our turn, form and create worlds, and send forth our spirit children to inherit those worlds.”
and melvin j ballard, who stated: “through the righteousness and faithfulness of men and women all those who keep the commandments of God will come forth with Celestial bodies, fitted and prepared to enter into their great, high and eternal glory in the Celestial Kingdom of God; and unto them, through their preparation, there will come children, who will be spirit children. I don’t think that is very difficult to comprehend and understand.” p11-12

Working on the Deseret Book of Mormon. Apparently all the book-materials were written up by the same person, Orson Pratt, born in New York in 1830. (I’ve also changed the Latin transliteration a little, trying to keep it closer to the published Latin analogues of the letters while still using one vowel for everything that’s not clearly a bindrune. So I now have u ů instead of ʌ u for <𐐲 𐐳>. I can’t type ringed characters from any keyboard I have, though, so I’ll probably change it again for easy transcription -- probably to <8> or something.)
First page is below the cut; notes above.
There are some differences in rhotic vowels between this and Shelton’s letter:
NORTH - år - or SQUARE - ār - er (only appears in ‘their’, which could well have been LETTER - ur - er
But the use of <𐐯> in LETTER is probably an error on Shelton’s part.
The lack of yod-dropping is obvious in Jiū, diū, and Jiūn. The spelling of the article ‘a’ as ä is a little weird -- one would expect ā.
In käst for ‘cast’ we see an example of the TRAP-BATH split.
