Rotten Apple
Ghost x fem!Reader (Canary) x Soap
A/N: This is set after the events in Bird Hunting, but is mostly centered around Canary (here [Name] due to her being in a civilian setting) and her parents. Just a lil' bit of lore for BH fans :)
Warnings: hurt/comfort, referenced past child neglect, narcissistic/abusive parents.
Summary: Sweetened apples turn sour when rotten apples are around.
Word count: 2100~
“...Yae think we should’ve brought a leash?” Johnny pondered, and Simon had no choice but to consider his opinion for the next time they went to the farmers’ market with [Name]. Only ten minutes had passed from the moment they arrived, and it only took her catching a whiff of sweetened apples for her to zoom away into the crowd.
And it was crowded today, with a congregation of people, alone, in couples, or entire families that had decided to brave the unusually sunny weather to stock up on organically harvested seasonal fruits and vegetables, animal products, and other produce made by the same people that sold them in cute little stands.
[Name] absolutely loved the farmers’ market - Simon wasn’t that keen on crowds, but both him and Johnny were easily swayed by her excitement. The initial plan was for them to stock up on groceries before spending a long-awaited long weekend at Johnny’s cabin in the north. But now she had disappeared to who-knows-where.
Her stealth had been an important skill during missions, but now it was a problem. Is this how their enemies felt, knowing that she was around there but being unable to find her?, Simon thought, his eyes scanning the crowd from above - luckily, there weren't many people even close to his size.
“There!” Johnny exclaimed, and took off in a random direction. Simon was hot behind his heels, refusing to lose another one of his partners today. Both men had to struggle to part the crows around them without shoving them aside, and not tripping into distracted kids that wandered around their parents.
Finally, Simon saw her, but there was something off about her. He couldn’t quite place it before Johnny got to her, his hand brushing her arm.
“[Na-]! Oh, sorry,” Johnny quickly retracted his hand with a sheepish grin, “I thought you were my girlfriend, you look a lot like her.”
The girl eyed him up and down and quirked an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed, “That’s the most awful pick-up line I’ve heard,” she sneered at him, and Johnny couldn’t help but notice that she really looked eerily similar to [Name], from the color of her hair, the shape of her lips, to the scrunch on her nose when she looked at him in displeasure. “And by the way,” she continued dismissively, crossing her arms over her chest, “I already have a fiance, and you can’t afford me anyway.”
Both Simon and Johnny blinked at the woman, who was looking at both of them up and down. Johnny was getting rightfully annoyed at her choice of tone, and was about to turn around when she saw the woman’s face shift into surprise as her eye caught something behind them. “...[Name]?”
[Name] had been about to grab Simon’s shoulder, excited to show him her newly purchased jars of jams while munching away at a caramel apple, but the moment she noticed who was speaking to them, she turned around and shifted through the crowds again.
Her heart was pounding in her ears and she felt her lungs constrict against her ribs for oxygen. The soles of her feet stung - although her burns were healed, the new skin was still sensitive. She had lost her treat somewhere, but she paid it no mind, eager to find the exit, and wait for Johnny and Simon by the truck.
However, and she should already know this by heart, Lady luck sometimes is a bitch.
“...[Name]? Is that you?” The voice made her freeze on the spot, right outside the parking lot, and she felt like a child all over again as she slowly turned around, her eyes meeting her mother’s.
“...Hi, mom,” she sighed dejectedly, resigning herself to her fate as she saw her father turn around to face her, regarding her with an unimpressed stare, “Hi, dad.”
“Haven’t seen you in years, darling,” the woman spoke sweetly and smiled politely, but it didn’t reach her eyes. It never does when it’s for me, [Name] thought bitterly. It was no different than when she spoke to a stranger at the grocery store, definitely not how one would speak to a daughter.
“Have you finally come to your senses?” her father was less subtle, crossing his arms over his chest, “Are you finally coming back home?”
“Ah, no, I’m actually on medical leave,” she cleared her throat and straightened her back, finally remembering she was not a teenager anymore, “I have my own place, had it for a while now, actually.”
“Really now?” her mother cooed, “When are you going to get the rest of your stuff from home, then?”
[Name] blinked at her, tilting her head a little in confusion, “you told me you were getting rid of my things years ago, you said you were going to use my bedroom for an office for Trish or something.”
“Oh, we did repurpose your old bedroom, silly girl,” the woman laughed, then shrugged condescendingly, “what we couldn’t give away is in a couple of small boxes in the attic, mostly your childhood photos.” [Name] said nothing - she had already expected her parents to get rid of all traces of her the moment she joined the military, she was only mildly puzzled about them keeping anything. “I'm sure you’ll want those, at least.”
“...You don’t want them?” she asked, although she already had an inkling of what the answer would be.
“Well, it would be embarrassing to have people asking about you, you know?” her mother sighed, shaking her head, “What would we tell them? It was easier to pretend your sister was an only child.”
“You could tell them the truth,” [Name] retorted, and her father seemed to tense up at her answer.
“Tell people that we have a daughter who whores herself out for a living?” He grumbled, while her mother looked around to see if anyone heard, “what do they call them, barrack bunnies?”
[Name] bit her lip, her mind unhelpfully replaying the disastrous argument that resulted from her enlisting years prior. “I thought you didn’t care if I died, anyway.”
“But you’re alive, and you owe us,” her mother chastised, her pitch dropping a few tones, “we raised you-”
“Grandma and Grandpa raised me, you were too busy raising Trish.”
“We kept you fed and clothed even though you always rebelled against us,” her mother hissed, stepping closer, “you turned our family against us!”
“You did that yourself,” [Name] kept her voice down, calm, knowing from experience that getting herself fired up would only give them more power, “you’re the one who started pretending I didn’t exist when I turned ten, saying you wished Trish was your only daughter.”
Her mother huffed and turned her face away indignantly, “and I stand by that.”
“...I know, you find it easier to pretend I don’t exist than to check whether I’m alive or not.”
“We should’ve left you at the hospital when we had the chance.”
[Name] rolled her eyes at that. After so many years living away from her parents, the usual quips and threats from her mother hurt less than when she was a teenager. It was a small comfort, to know that she’d grown out of her parents' shadow. “Yeah, that wasn’t very smart of you-” she was stopped by a sound slap, her face turning from the impact. She slowly raised her hand to cup her stinging cheek, and eyed her father, whose hand was still raised.
“You will not speak to your mother in that manner, young lady,” he growled, and [Name] just blinked at him, unsure of how to react without getting herself arrested.
“And you will not raise your hand against my corporal again, unless you’re ready to lose it,” Simon’s voice was low, dangerously low, and it sent shivers down both [Name]’s and her parents’ spines, although for entirely different reasons. She glanced over her shoulder, finding herself eye-level with Simon’s chest. Johnny stood by his side with a severe expression in his face, one she had seldom seen before.
Her parents warily stepped back, taking in the two large men who seemed to have appeared out of nowhere. “W-who are you?” Her father stammered - although he would later deny he did.
“Lieutenant Riley, and this is your last warning,” he grumbled, although he didn’t need to do anything else to intimidate them. They already looked as if they were trying to find somewhere to hide.
Knowing that her parents were - for once - the ones cowering in fear stirred a newfound sense of power in [Name]’s heart - what was it that Gaz called it? Ah, yeah, scary dog privilege. She found it easier to look at the people in front of them and realize that nothing had tied her to them for a long time.
The branches of the genealogy tree can also be snipped to one’s content, her Grandma had told her on her twelfth birthday, when she couldn’t grasp the concept of her parents choosing to celebrate one kid’s birthday and not the other’s.
She had found herself being dropped off at her Grandparents’ early in the morning, while her parents boasted about taking Trish to an amusement park for the day. Little [Name] was heartbroken, and had begged her mom to forgive her for whatever she had done to not deserve a birthday party. But alas, they were relentless, and a lot of screaming from her mom and a backhanded slap from her dad had broken her pleas and made her silent, just like many other times.
At that time, [Name] couldn’t grasp the meaning of her Grandma’s words, but now that she had grown up, and disappointment had settled in a long time ago, those words rang truer than ever in her mind.
Even when she was on the brink of death in the forest, seeing them again never crossed her mind, for she knew they wouldn’t care even to visit her grave.
Keep up with that attitude, and you will die alone, because no one will ever love you, her mother had told her at thirteen, when she started openly questioning the difference in treatment with her twin.
How wrong she was, she thought. She was far from alone, and she was very well loved. Although her Grandparents were long gone, she had Simon and Johnny right here with her, and Gaz was her chosen brother, and Price was a better father figure than the man in front of her had ever been.
“Burn those photos, for all I care,” she smiled at her mother. It was a calm, detached smile - a polite smile you give to a stranger at the grocery store, not to a parent. “Make it real, that I do not exist for you.”
And with that she turned around, tugging on Simon's long sleeve as discreetly as she could. Johnny did notice, however, and smirked to himself as he followed after them - Simon would’ve gladly squared up to those two for hours if needed, but he easily relented to her touch.
Simon opened the truck’s passenger door for [Name] and she sat in silence, still mulling over her thoughts. A warm hand rested on her knee and she looked up to see her favorite pair of blue eyes staring back at her. They looked at each other in silence - there was an unsaid question in his lips, but she could almost taste it.
“...Let’s go home, okay?” She whispered, her hand stroking his knuckles. He simply nodded and shut the door before climbing in himself. Johnny was already sitting behind her, his lips pressed in a pout as he caught her reflection on the side view mirror, staring out of the window at the pair of strangers that once held her heart in their hands.
After a few silent moments as they pulled out of the parking lot, Johnny reached over, presenting [Name] with a fresh candy apple with sprinkles on top. She took it from his fingers, chuckling to herself at how easy it was for them to draw a smile from here, even though her heart still stung a little.
"Thanks, love," she hummed, pressing a kiss to his wrist and knowing that Johnny was grinning proudly to himself. Simon's hand was warm on her thigh, a welcome weight that grounded her in the present.
She could grow her own tree, if she so wanted, with the people she loved the most.
A/N: poor bby Canary deserved better parents :(

Ok just thinking about…
Carmy fucking Berzatto moving back to Chicago and tryna find new places to get produce, but he’s been gone so long and he’s seen so much new shit and now he’s a little bit of a produce snob sue him…he wants to know where to find the good shit, the fresh shit, the home grown basil, the passion fruit and the ethically sourced brown eggs and yeah alright the fucking kombucha too…and he’s in his office with his face in his hands rubbing his forehead raw tryna find a coherent thought through the roaring in his fucking skull thinking “where the fuck is a man supposed to find a good parsnip around here?” and Sydney is getting a cluster headache just watching him, so she blows past him muttering something about a farmers market on south street?
“Huh?”
She backs up, fixes him with one of her looks (part annoyed part wide eyed sincerity) and goes “Carmy, there’s a fucking farmers market in south street, they’ve got the good shit, just go up there and ask for Riot, OK?”
And he’s like what the fuck is a riot but she’s already done with this conversation so he sits there for half a second longer before he goes fuck it, plucks a cigarette from the pack and grabs his coat and hauls ass to south street cuz the way he figures, he needs the fresh air anyway
He makes it down to south and it’s familiar, he remembers the farmers market being a thing when he was a little kid, but the vibe is…different. It’s bigger, there’s more people, and younger people, not just nonna’s slinging pickled vegetables and butter pastries, but hippie mother fuckers with stands full of body butters and tinctures and shiny rocks. It’s less white too, which is a fucking relief, cuz the last thing he needs is some white dude with matted locs and shitty dream catchers tryna loop him into some incoherent hippie pyramid scheme…
He’s got his reservations, all right — sometimes organic doesn’t mean better quality, and he’s looking for new shit, something that’ll get him excited to get his hands on it, looking to speak to someone who knows what they’re talking about, and apparently he’s looking for riot, so he stops at the first stand that catches his eye — with wooden crates full of lush, firm peaches and basil so fresh he can smell it before he sees it, and (holy grail) a fat bunch red spring onion. There’s other stuff too, stuff he can’t quite place — jars of jams he’s never heard of, a bottle of “fire cider”, and yeah, a couple shiny rocks (must be a new wave he’s missed)
“Uh, ‘scuse me…” he mumbles out — the stall owner is facing away from him, rifling through a crate of something in a bunch of metal tins, looking for something “you know where I can find someone called riot?”
They pause at the name, straighten up and turn around and — Carmen’s brain stops working, literally just…operating system crashing, all programs shutting down, complete halt on brain activity…
It’s the deep brown skin, it’s the tattoos littered across the arms and the fingers and up the neck, it’s their icy blonde locs pulled up in a messy bunch atop their head secured with a white bandana, it’s the long black dress that they wear with the slit in the thigh and all the straps and cutouts and the way it’s a little see through so he can see this faint outline of their pretty fucking body, it’s their pretty fucking face with the plush lips and the barbells in their eyebrows and their fucking eyes—
Holy shit, he thinks. What the fuck, he thinks.
“You can find me right here, honey,” they say, voice a little bit low and smoky, like they’re a smoker or a jazz singer or both. Brown eyes, maybe a little amber in the sun — dark rum eyes, sizing him up, looking amused and unimpressed in a way that really shouldn’t be doing it for him, but—
Here he is, getting done up. Just his luck. Exactly what he needs — some new way to feel helpless and hungry…

NO FR the way my grocery store is set up is SO ass backwards it ridiculous. You want cheese and/or dip? alright it's in the Deli except it's also with the dairy on the opposite side of the store and both of them have different brands so you have to check both. You want canned vegetables? ok it's down aisle three except theres some down aisle 2 and also aisle 1 but those are in jars. You want this one thing in a different size? Sure, it's just three feet away and four shelves up but what the fuck is consistency right? please help me
what the fuck 😭😭 hell world
I've only worked in smaller grocery stores so we've never had enough space to make bonkers wild organization choices like that. but the target I work in rn has a really small food/grocery section and it's organized like. there's one aisle of food stuff (teas, coffee, baking stuff, dried fruits), then the open market w dairy products and produce and premade bakery stuff, then frozen and cold food, then alcohol (like 2 aisles of just alcohol. there's like less than 10 total aisles of grocery), THEN the rest of the food

There was an inflatable pool that sat only a few feet away from a brick and river rock fire pit. Right in the middle of a sort of grassy but mostly dirt lawn. Aaron and Max were lying on the paltry grass beside the pool, their bare feet sore and blistered after a day spent picking fruit in the orchard that takes up the back few acres of Aaron's family property. It's not well-maintained anymore, sort of twisted together in places with dead trees scattered about but it feeds the town well in summer. They never have minded people wandering up and picking something for themselves. The orchard was planted by his grandfather years before his mother was born. He had money to burn, and he was known to be a little eccentric, so a hobby farm suited him just fine. First it was a goat and a donkey and a few apple trees at the edge of the property, and then it became rows of apple trees and another donkey. Then peaches and some pigs. Before long it was less of a hobby and more of a job. His grandmother hated it, and when he'd passed away, she let it all go. Now the house belonged to his parents, and they sprayed the trees but kept no other remnants of the hobby farm days.
Still, the town loves the fruit trees. Mrs. Hutchison likes to bake pies and she'll take a whole tree worth of apples, enough to spend days in her kitchen, and she always brings at least two pies by the Hotchner house in thanks. Sometimes three if her haul was particularly good. Aaron can eat an entire one by himself, and she makes sure he gets one. “Far too thin...” she'll tell him, shoving the pie at his chest. “Just put a fork in it and dig in.” He's never had a particularly powerful sweet tooth but he'd do just about anything for one of her pies.
That was how he got started picking the apples. One summer, she'd had some kind of a surgery and couldn't come get any so he took it upon himself. There were plenty of bee stings and scraped knuckles before he was satisfied, but he managed. And though the pies were late, she gave him one special when she was able to make them.
What people don't pick themselves, Aaron and Haley and Jessica would lazily pick and try to sell down at the farmer's market. Just kids, they weren't very thorough and instead of paying for a stand they just gave the organizers a box of whatever fruits and vegetables they'd like. Some sort of shabby bartering system, and while Jess and Haley thought it was really cool and old timey, Aaron knew his mother had practically donated the land they set the market up on to them so really...there wouldn't have been any argument if the kids just set up. Aaron liked to keep the extent of his money as quiet as he could. Especially from his friends.
All of the money they made was put into some high interest bank account Jessica set up for Sean...maybe for college or something after. Jessica loved that kid to the ends of the earth and when they couldn't agree on where to put the money (as if it was more than $20 a week), she made the decision for them. Aaron agreed after giving it some thought, and Haley really didn't care it turned out. She just had fun with them. She was glad to be included for once. In any case, Aaron knew he already had scholarships lined up and he knew for a fact there was a hefty trust fund in his name for when he turned 21. He wasn't so sure Sean got the same treatment, times had changed after he was born. They no longer lived in the land of plenty. They came from old money, but that well was running dry. And over the last few months, their father had started acting strange. Aaron was always vaguely concerned about the future, he couldn't help it, but these days it almost consumed his every thought. Sean was so little.
“Did you sign up for drama class?” Aaron asked, wiggling his toes in the icy water. He knew that Max had his meeting with their grade level counselor earlier that day to set his schedule for senior year. Max hadn't lived there long and needed a few extra credits in order to graduate...he'd be taking a few summer school classes to make them up later. Max sighed.
“Yeah. I still don't think I'll be any good. It's nice you want me in your class and all but I'm gonna stink.”
“Easy elective credits.”
They met out in the orchard. Max was the new kid in school right at the end of the year. He was working for Aaron's mom, spraying for bugs and pruning the trees for some extra money though Aaron wasn't sure his mom paid even remotely fairly. His long hair, dirty blonde, was pulled up on the top of his head in a messy knot and his face was filthy. Aaron's first thought was that he looked like Puck stepped right out of A Midsummer Night's Dream and into his orchard, but these were thoughts better kept off of his lips. That didn't seem like the type of thing anyone but Aaron would find remotely flattering. But the thing was...
He was also gorgeous. And Aaron temporarily lost the ability to speak when they first came face to face. “I'm not stealing!” he called, craning his entire body to the side to peer at Aaron through the gnarled trees. Aaron swallowed and nodded.
“No, I know...my mom sent me out here to check on you. See if you wanted some lunch. She's making apple butter sandwiches.”
Max wasted no time in picking back up his pruning shears. Like he was already bored of Aaron's presence. “Nah. I'm good. I been drinkin' outta the hose.”
That was it. Aaron decided he liked Max right then. Max who just didn't give a shit. He didn't meet many people like that. Between the kids in his classes and the people his parents had over, everyone gave an abundance of shits. About everything. Politics, grades, him and his life choices. Money. He was tired of it.
So he started walking to Max's place after finishing his homework, or his morning chores, or filing at his father's office. Max's family rented three lots at the trailer park down by the creek not far from Aaron's house. Just down the road, or if you were a 17 year old boy, you didn't mind wading through the creek and wandering through the field until you reached the orchard. They'd worn their own path that snaked between the trees over the last few months. That period of time when you meet someone new and you become sort of addicted to their presence in your life and feel dull and gray without them. Aaron wandered through that orchard more over the summer than he had in his entire life.
He'd never even set foot in the trailer park and he'd lived at its border for his entire existence. Max's dad moved them around a lot, his mother having left them when he was a baby because she didn't want to get married and they'd conceived out of wedlock. Max's dad was a traveling preacher, they would pitch up in a town that needed someone to fill in at just about any church until they found someone permanent and she'd wandered off into the mist leaving him with a screaming baby in his arms. That was the way Max always pictured it anyway. Reality was far less dramatic. She told his father right away that she would carry the baby to term and she loved them both very much but she simply wasn't ready for this and off she went. He never held it against her. It was God's will.
Max dreamed of things he would never experience. He talked about things like dragonfruit with stars in his eyes and if you closed your eyes and listened to him ramble on and on about Woodstock in '69 you might really believe he'd been there. He could sing every word to every song by The Mamas and Papas and The Beastie Boys and you would never know which one he preferred. He just loved...everything.
Aaron looked at him and knew he wasn't meant to be around forever. He remembered someone talking about James Dean once and saying live fast die young. You just got those feelings about people. They had no patience, didn't want to wait until they were 80 to see or do something they could grasp at 16. But he was so fucking present now that it didn't matter that much. Aaron could look into his own future, as hopeless as he felt some days, and see a suit and a tie and maybe even a family if he was having a good day. He worried over his future all the time. But he couldn't read Max.
Max was just...now. Max was not future and that saddened him deeply though he tried not to let it.
“I think my dad's cheating on my mom...” Aaron drawled, adjusting his hips against the crispy already overcooked grass and squinted into the blue sky. Fluffy clouds moved overhead and if he was with Sean right now, they might try to find shapes but Aaron was always lying...just making shit up...he'd lost the ability to see shapes. “It's a fluffy cloud, and look there is another...cloud...” Max could see them. Just ten minutes prior he'd said he'd seen people having sex. Aaron didn't bother to open his eyes for that one. It was either the truth but it was real people in a window (not clouds) or it was a lie and Max would make fun of him for wanting to look. Either way, he feigned disinterest.
“You just figuring this out? You really ain't no Sherlock Holmes...”
“No, I just...I've been thinking about it a while and I think I wanna see for myself.” He hoisted himself up on his elbows and turned his head toward Max, squinting into the harsh afternoon sunlight. “Would you come with me?”
“Where?”
“I dunno. Out. Following him I guess. He pretends like he's working, says he has all these client meetings, but he's lying...I do his filing, it's almost nothing right now. He doesn't have any active cases. So where's he going?”
Max sat upright and regarded Aaron more seriously than he ever had. Wisdom was about to spill out from between those perfect peach lips and Aaron wasn't sure he wanted to hear it. “And no matter what you find...you're okay with it? Cos here's the thing...I seen plenty of people my dad's had in his office cryin' over finding out something awful they weren't prepared for. Infidelity bein' the least troubling of the things, Aaron. You get me? All's I'm sayin' is that you think one thing but you might find out somethin' else and you gotta be ready for anything...”
Aaron huffed and folded his arms over his chest, curling around himself like there was a chill in the air suddenly. He couldn't imagine what he'd find out that could be worse than his father being in love with someone that wasn't his mom. It would be the ultimate sin from a man who did little else. “I don't care. I want to know.”
“What'll you do with the information once you have it?”
“I don't know Max. Confront him? Punch his lights out? Tell my mom? I don't fucking know I just...I need to know what he's doing.”
“Your mom's no dummy. If he's steppin' out on her, I guarantee she knows. But okay. I'm in.”
Aaron reached out and punched him square in the shoulder, rolling his eyes. He didn't appreciate the grilling when he knew damn well that Max was going to do it anyway. It was one of those things he might come to regret later, in fact he was sure of it, but he pushed it out of his mind right away. They were going to follow his dad in the morning and see what he was really up to. What else did they have to do with their long summer days? They needed something to keep them entertained.
He would regret every single one of those misguided thoughts.
The first blow to their plan came when they couldn't wrangle Haley or Jessica into their mission, at least not in the morning. Jessica was doing some summer school class credit so she could lead the Model UN group the next year...Haley had been both shocked and appalled that Jessica even wanted to do that, let alone be so motivated to ruin her summer over it. She had a few history and geography things to nail down before she could rule that club with an iron fist. She'd also toyed with running for student office...just for shits and giggles. A campaign would give her something to do. Posters to make and speeches to write. “Vote Brooks for Less Books” was her working slogan...Haley called her sister a moron. “You're the smartest kid in your entire class and you act like such an airhead.” Jessica only smiled at that. So, she was out, but her afternoon was free and she was very interested in helping them sleuth around town even if she was more than a little worried about how Aaron would handle any of the possible outcomes. She already had feelings about what they'd find and it wasn't at all what Aaron was suspicious of. She'd been keeping some secrets over the last few months.
Haley flat out said no. “I won't spy on your father no matter how gross he's being.” She also had a date with her boyfriend Adam and the public pool. She was positively booked up. “Be careful though, okay? Don't get hurt.”
Following the senior Hotchner around town turned out to be relatively easy. He wasn't hiding. What was worse, the longer the day dragged on, the more apparent it was that a mistress wasn't what he was hiding. It was something far more sinister, and Max's words rang painfully in Aaron's ears as he watched his father stride out into the afternoon sunlight and into his vehicle. The sign on the building had a few names on it, gold lettering against black iron. Reading it sent chills up Aaron's spine.
The building was a small ramshackle office building that housed a tax lawyer, a small dentist's office and an oncologist. Aaron knew without having to ask which office his father was coming from. By the looks of it, and the way he stepped back a little to give Aaron some space, Max did too. The moment was volatile and felt nearly endless until finally Aaron stepped back and began walking quickly the direction his father's car had gone in. He was only a few blocks away at a stop light. Aaron was fast, he could catch him if he wanted to. Pound on that passenger window, bang his fists and rage at him. If he wanted to.
“No, Aaron, don't!”
“He's DYING and he didn't even TELL US.”
His rage was palpable, and Max reached out to stop him, to tug at the back of his sweat soakded t-shirt. He might have ripped it if he hadn't let it go. “Aaron, now isn't the time! Please come back!”
Aaron did finally stop when his father's car disappeared down some side street, and then he just stood there like a statue. Lost in shred of time. Flickering in and out of consciousness. He thought he might pass out, or run away. Either one was a viable option and not much existed in between. “Come on, let's go back to my place. It's too fuckin' hot, we can get in the creek and I think I got some hot dogs in my fridge...we can find some good sticks and roast 'em.”
“I'm not eating meat right now,” Jessica said, appearing out of nowhere. Like she always did.
Max laughed. “Protest?”
Jessica shrugged. “Sure.” She was forever trying new things, eager to figure herself out now before any of it really mattered. Going meatless during the school year had been hard, she liked the school meatloaf days, but in summer it was easier. She could test it out. Giving up hot dogs was easy. “So what's the scoop? Any dirty little secrets unearthed?”
All the color drained from Max's face and he shot her a glare that told her to shut the fuck up immediately. “What?” she asked, furrowing her brow. Subtlety was not in her wheelhouse. The sun caught her curly lion's mane at just the right angle and nearly blinded Max with its brightness. Couldn't be a halo, this chick was no angel. They'd been skinny dipping at their favorite little watering hole enough times to know that. She was the only girl in their grade with a tattoo.
“We can talk at my place, not here. Come on.”
Her demeanor remained that same incredulous half-smiling sarcastic way she always had, and then when the soft slump of Aaron's shoulders and his silence finally struck her she changed immediately. Everything about her softened and she approached him, placing one hand on his forearm gently and looking up at him. “Aaron?”
“There isn't another woman. He's sick, Jess. Really sick...”
“Oh...oh Aaron...”
They didn't speak for the entire walk back to Max's place. It wasn't a slow walk, they sort of fell in line with whatever pace Aaron chose. He was leading them, like always. He was a natural leader, even if he lacked the confidence sometimes to believe it. When they got back, Aaron kicked out of his sneakers and walked into the water without a word. He could think better with the rush of the creek against his knees. It was ice cold, so cold his skin burned. It was like his body shut down, all sensory input stopped and it was just his mind left running the show.
“Is he okay?” Jess asked, and Max shrugged helplessly. She didn't think she'd ever seen him so helpless and yeah...they hadn't known eachother long but she knew him. She knew him very well. He always had something smart to say. He was the only kid she knew who had spent time in Morocco, Uganda, Venezuela...you name it, he'd been there. When his father wasn't finding jobs at needy churches he was volunteering his family for mission trips that required a lot of shots and a lot of language lessons in order to undertake. Max knew things.
“I was gonna ask you the same thing.”
“Well...that's bad...” she said quietly, until she finally couldn't take it anymore and kicked her own shoes off with a little puffing sound. If he wasn't going to talk and he wasn't going to send her any telepathic messages, she'd have to just go stand next to him and hope for the best. Max followed her lead, as he so often did. Jess could probably get him to go anywhere or do anything. He was infatuated with her absurdity and never wanted to miss a single minute of the insanity that flew out of her mouth. If that meant wandering out into the ice cold creek so be it.
“Aaron...” she said as they flanked him, pressed in on him from both sides. “Talk to us.”
“Nothing to say.” He said it so quietly it almost got lost on the rush of the current. Stolen by the crickets coming out to let them know that day was fading. Soon the symphony of frogs would begin from somewhere up in the woods that butted up to Aaron's house on the other side, they could traipse through the creek and eventually find where the chorus began. Converge on their frog friends and sing along. “I don't even care.”
“Looks like you care an awful lot...” Jess said softly and it was immediately the wrong thing. He turned to her with that desperate look on his face and sparks ignited in his honey eyes. “I'm sorry. That's not...I just meant that I'm here for you. You know...if you do care.”
“Thanks.” That was it. He didn't need to be told she was there, she never left his side. She was always finding ways to be in his space. Babysitting Sean was her newest venture. She got paid to babysit Sean but she probably thought she was babysitting him too. And that thought struck a chord. “Jess...did you know?”
She pursed her lips and shifted her feet on the stones, trying to find a comfortable place to stand with bare feet on jagged slippery rocks. This was a question she didn't want to answer. The problem was that there was no straight answer. He'd left a pill bottle on the kitchen counter a few nights back when she was watching Sean. Anti-nausea medication was all it was, nothing damning, but even to her that seemed strange. She'd ignored it and continued making the little tinfoil JiffyPop popcorn for Sean and forced the concern out of her mind. Aaron's father didn't want her sympathy and neither would Aaron. Anti-nausea medication could be for anything, but she'd watched three of her four grandparents wither away under cancer's attack and somehow in all the places that mattered she knew. “Jess?”
She slipped her hand inside of his and squeezed. “I'm sorry Aaron.”
“Don't be. He's an asshole.”
The words were at war with his demeanor and all at once his knees were giving out while he tried to drag himself back to the shore, just far enough that he could collapse there in the rocky mud and hug the earth to him. “He's an asshole.” His voice was less sure this time. Timid, afraid, small. He stayed hunched there for minutes while Jess and Max stood back, afraid to approach. He'd become a wounded animal. Just as likely to bite as he was to let you near.
It was Max that dared move first. Jess knew she was swimming in the putrid sea of betrayal, drowning there. He would see reason soon enough but that was a feeling for later, much later, and she knew better than to press him. You couldn't force Aaron Hotchner to do anything he didn't want to do. She whispered to Max that she was going to go, she was on dinner duty tonight anyway...no hot dogs roasted on an open spit for her. Probably sloppy joes or hamburger helper, her mom was no gourmet and she didn't keep much in the way of good ingredients on hand. And yeah, she was a shitty vegetarian. Check that one off the list.
Max walked past Aaron, dragging one hand along his back, fingers playing against the ridges of Aaron's spine. And then he was gone, whipping his pocket knife out to cut a few green twigs off of nearby bushes and skinning them while Aaron cried into the bank of their endless stream. At least Max hoped he was crying. If it wasn't crying, he didn't have a clue what it could be. Shoulders shaking, gasping breath, his back hunching and muscles coiled. Whatever it was, Aaron didn't want an audience.
While Aaron sat there, curled around himself, lost deep inside somewhere no one could follow, Max set to fixing their broken fire pit. It would break again when too many beers meant drunk teenagers kicking rocks in with exuberance. For now, he just needed it to hug the fire tight so he pressed the renegade rocks back into place until they stuck.
The smell of hot dogs, the cheap and salty red ones sold at the butcher's shop, was intoxicating. There was a sound, that crackle and pop of thin skin heated to its absolute limit and then the sizzle of grease jumping into the fire. That grabbed Aaron's attention and pulled him toward Max until he was sitting in the dirt against Max's leg, his cheek resting wearily against Max's thigh.
“I hate him.”
“I know.”
“I mean it. I hate him. I know he cheats on my mom...and what he does to us...he deserves it. But why...” he couldn't even finish it. Why do I care? Why am I so damn upset? Why can't I breathe? Max knew all of these things, and he reached down deep into the well his father had filled with wisdom far beyond his years. Reached into the well that the world had left in his belly and found exactly the right words.
“Because he's your father. Your parents bring you into the world, and they're sort of like your tether...as long as they're kicking around...kicking you around...you're not really ever gonna be alone. Then they take off, go to meet Saint Peter and you really know what it is to be alone. You know? They're up there in heaven or they're frying in the lake of fire but they're not here. No one will ever know you like they do.”
Aaron sniffled, and finally let out the tears that had been burning just beneath the surface disguised as anger and panic. “Even if they're shitheads, Aaron. You're allowed to be upset that he's sick, and you're allowed to hate him anyway.”
“Why does everything have to be so complicated?”
At that, Max laughed and patted him on the shoulder with one hand. Aaron turned his head and saw a stick waiting for him to grab with a perfectly roasted and flaming hot dog hanging dangerously off of the end. One wrong move and that sausage was going into the fire. He brought the flaming meat closer and blew it out, closed his eyes and sighed. The sigh came with more tears and no more words.
“That's not complicated. Just lips and assholes stuffed into some stomach lining, man. Ain't nothing complicated about that.”

Read The Label
It is no secret that Americans face an obesity problem. While the stats vary from year to year, the essence is this: 39.6% of US Adults are obese, 31.6% are overweight, and 7.7% are severely obese. That means only 21.1% of us are not obese or—gasp—underweight. That’s hardly a symbol of American prosperity.
Obesity leads to myriad health problems, from diabetes to heart disease, joint problems, and more. It’s a train wreck waiting to happen. As a nation, many of our health problems are things we can control.
And yet we’re not exactly doing anything about it, at least not in consumer land. It’s easy to blame our busy lives not allowing enough time for exercise, but that’s a pretty lame excuse. We can always exercise, even if it is just chair yoga. The problem runs deeper, from consumption of fatty, sugar-laden processed foods, to diets centered on too much of meats, dairy, and eggs and not enough fruits and vegetables, and a sedentary lifestyle that finds us indoors interacting with some kind of screen.
It’s not like the government didn’t recognize this. In 1990, the NLEA (Nutrition Labeling and Education Act) was passed, and in 1994, the first Nutrition Facts label appeared on consumer packaged foods. It has evolved through the years such that it is packed with relevant information. Even the portion size is standardized, thanks to governmental oversight, and is based on the RACC—Reference Amounts Customarily Consumed.
Come on, isn’t a standard serving size of Oreos the whole package? Some people customarily do just that.
In 2018, restaurant chains with 20 or more units had to start posting calorie contents of menu items. Smaller chains and one-of-a-kinds were exempt, because restaurateurs had to go to great expense to have each and every entree analyzed in a lab. That bloomin’ onion at Outback Steakhouse clocks in at 1660 calories. That’s insane for an appetizer.
But evidence suggests that people still don’t consume the information. A study by the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota showed that people check the information infrequently, if at all. All that ink, going to waste.
Marketers, though, in spite of blind eyes and deaf ears among consumers, still love to run and play with marketing words that complement the government mandatories. They must assume that shoppers are more prone to reading the front of the package, and not the back.
Tumblr media
Words and phrases like “organic,” “non-GMO,” “all natural,” “plant-based,” and the like are now commonplace, and they supposedly help guide consumer purchase. The USDA regulates some of these, but not all. Of those regulated, there are exacting requirements to make the claim of being organic or other such traits. Basically, the USDA has created benchmarks. But not all words and phrases are regulated.
In many regards, it is like the wild, wild west when it comes to food claims, and the notion of caveat emptor has never been more true. You’re on your own, buddy. Become an educated consumer. You eat at your own peril.
All of this coming at a time when a major class action lawsuit against Wendy’s and McDonald’s has been dismissed. The judged ruled that photographic puffery of menu items is just part of the marketing hyperbole. It’s on you, not them.
I am one of the few who does read labels carefully. The ongoing evolution of the Nutrition Facts label makes it easier than ever to identify the source(s) of a food’s bad traits, as well as bold-faced ingredients (14 different ones!) that are red flags based on a person’s allergies or food choices. And if you’re wondering whether a shopper could use the same level of scrutiny online as in the store, the answer is yes. I checked my most recent Walmart+ purchases, and found each item in my history has both the Nutrition Facts and Ingredients shown.
So what do we make of this? It’s a mess, there’s a ton of information, and from the looks of things, most people are ignoring it. In a nutshell, they’re just not having any of this health and wellness the federal government would like to foster, even if it is a public good. Let’s face it, a sick population costs money to keep on life support, but it seems that few care.
And here we are, four out of five overweight to some extent. Eating a WFPB (Whole Food, Plant-Based) -diet is tough, but it works if care is taken to get the right amounts of nutrients. It is the extreme, though. But man is it inconvenient, not to mention difficult to do in public. You have to take the time to know your foods, not to mention mustering up the resolve to forsake the comfort foods our culture promotes so heavily.
It’s a tangled mess. The government thinks it is important, but in the end, it all boils down to personal responsibility. You can bring a person to organic tofu, but you can’t make them eat it. And the marketers always love an opportunity to spin doctor anything. I once found a frozen grocery item that had the familiar (and one may now say over-used) phrase “plant-based” on the label. Turned out it was only one of the ingredients making that claim; the item in totality was hardly vegan, if that was your goal.
I’m OK with the personal responsibility. Eat what you like, whatever it is. But please also figure out a way to squeeze in a fitness regime. At the end of the day, and aside from any genetic predispositions, it boils down to what we put in, and what we put out. And please start reading those labels. You don’t have to be a food nutritionist to understand them, although I’m sure it helps.
In an organic kind of way, of course.

How to Optimize Storage Space on a Boat
Tumblr media
Sailors and everyone living in offshore homes have pioneered many advancements in small-space living. Bobbing beside a dock or anchored in a marina, sailboats, houseboats, and small yachts use clever designs to make the most of a few square feet. If you want extra space in your boat to accommodate more passengers, read this article to know how to save space in your boat.
Secure Your Gear
Do you want to secure gear and supplies in a visible location within reach? You can work wonders with inexpensive items like gear ties, carabineers, bungee cords, cargo nets and hook and loop fasteners. In the galley, cargo nets are great for overhead storage of fruits and vegetables, ready for the chef to grab. Bungee cords work well for securing windbreakers up against a bulkhead. Want to set your coffee cup down on the table and not have it tip over? Try sticking hook and loop material to its underside with the corresponding hook and loop mating surface located on the table and in other strategic locations around the boat. Have fun, use your imagination and you will find interesting ways to secure all kinds of gear.
Install a Small Charging Station
It’s best to place all gadgets in one place so they don’t tend to scatter around the boat. If you need to charge phones, laptops, and other gadgets at the same time, designate a small area in your boat where you can use it as a charging station. You can confine this on a counter or even a drawer. Install multiple outlets in one place. Make sure you also have a chord organizer where it can hold chords neatly.
Use Collapsible Containers
Your kitchen, or a galley, is definitely one of those areas in your boats where a lot of items are stored or placed. To save space, collapsible containers for everything from bowls to measuring cups. When you need the containers, you have them in their full size, but when you need to store them on board, you can collapse them, so they easily fit in drawers and other small galley storage spaces. You can use canvas baskets as your collapsible storage spaces. You can fold it up and keep it up if they are not in use.
Make Use of the Wall Space
To add aesthetics to your walls, use functional décor. There are a lot of beautiful hanging organizers or wall racks that not only add beauty and charm to your boat but can also maximize the wall space that can also use to store your belongings.
Use Foldable Furniture
To save more space in your boat, use furniture that can be folded and kept aside. A foldable table, seat, or bed is beneficial for space in your boat. These allow you the convenience of foldable furniture as well as the use of the space when these items are stowed. Cup holders are also helpful to keep drinks within reach and make a difference when every iota of space matters.
Find a Boat with Floor Storage
If you’re still looking for a boat and you’re in the market planning to purchase one, find a boat that has underfloor storage. Underfloor storage gives you extra space and it’s also completely out of sight Stacer’s Wild Rider boat range has underfloor storage where you can store other items in your boats such as fenders, angling gear, and other boating accessories.
Organized Anglers Catch More Fish
If you have a fishing boat, organizing your tackle onboard will help you to catch more fish. Where not already installed, consider a set of flush-mount rod holders. Offshore fishing boats benefit by installing "rocket launcher-style" rod holders to keep rods out of the way but also rigged and ready for action. Rod holders can also be installed overhead inside the boat's cabin. You can buy them in marine boat shops.
Multi-Use Products Save Space
Choose products and gear that serve multiple purposes or are designed to take up less space. For example, use multi-tools, that include pliers, cutting blades, screwdrivers, files, etc. These products help you save a ton of space in your storage areas.

Frozen Food Market - Forecast (2022 - 2027)
Frozen Food market Overview:
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations, nearly one third of the food produced every year amounting to roughly $680 billion (approximately 1.3 billion tons) gets either wasted, or lost[1]
.  The issue of food wastage has given birth to the frozen food market which is experiencing a colossal growth with an increase in disposable income, and accentuated refrigeration technology. According to the analyst at Industry ARC, the global frozen food market size in 2018 stood between $225 billion to $228 billion. The market is estimated to grow steadily with a normal CAGR of 3.5%-5% during the forecast period of 2019-2025. Geographically, Europe led the frozen food market with a regional share of 30%-32% in 2018 owing to an increase in mergers and acquisitions between vendors and hypermarkets. On-the-go consumption of food is also driving the European frozen food market.
Frozen Food Market Outlook:
The prospect for frozen food market has never seemed brighter. With a growing awareness in food trends, consumers are resorting to cooking fresh meals at home which are free from any preservatives. For this, they require frozen foods which come in extensive categories these days, some of which are dairy-free, vegan, gluten-free, sugar-free, low fat, etc. Availability of high quality frozen foods makes market growth easier, and less prone to negative fluctuation. Recent trends in technology have introduced cryogenic freezing which prevents addition of any artificial preservatives, while maintaining negligible growth of microorganisms at the same time. Ready meals, a key segment of the frozen food market, is expected to grow at a standard CAGR of 2.5%-4%. It is a convenient, and accessible option for the working class society which is perpetually busy, and consistently short on time.

Frozen Food Market Growth Drivers:
An Increasing Demand for Preservative Free Food
With an increase in organic produce demand, consumers are incessantly on the lookout for fresh vegetables, seafood, and fruits that do not have a short shelf life. Since most of the organic produce expires quickly, hypermarkets are resorting to freezing of frozen foods which customers are interested in buying. Cryogenic freezing of food items extends their shelf lives, and makes them free from any added preservatives. Consumers flock towards these products, and help frozen food market in attaining noticeable growth.
The Shopping Trends of Millennials
Contrary to popular beliefs on millennials being irresponsible buyers, frozen food market heavily relies on their purchasing trends. Millennials are ready to experiment, and invest on novel things unlike the generation before them. They also tend to buy products that preserve their time, and are easy to handle. These traits fuel the market growth of frozen foods as they are convenient, and ready to use, exactly how millennials might prefer. This generation, which drowns in student debts, and underpaying jobs relies majorly on the frozen food market for their nutritional needs.
Frozen Food Market Challenges:
One of the basic challenges faced by the frozen food market is the lack of a proper supply chain system, and the consistent fear of cold chain systems failing. Since frozen foods require a set optimum temperature around -18°C, even the slightest failure in cold chain system can result in massive wastage. A thoroughly functioning power backup, and consistent vigilance is required for assuring negligible frozen food loss.
Inquiry Before Buying
Frozen Food Market Key Players Perspective:
According to the analyst at IndustryArc, some of the key players in the frozen food market are Nestle SA, Unilever, Kellogg Company , General Mills Inc, Conagra Brands, Inc., Grupo Bimbo S.A.B. de C.V., McCain Foods Limited , Kraft Heinz Company, and Associated British.
In 2018, after recognizing the frozen food preference patterns of millennials, and losing out to rivals like LeanMeals, Nestle increased production in its US factories, and introduced a plethora of items in its lineup like frozen coconut chickpea curry, and sweet earth lover’s veggie pizza[2]
 Frozen Food Market Trends:
Improved Supply Chain Management
In order to make sure that the frozen food market continues to grow, and is not obstructed by food wastage, companies are employing an ameliorated supply chain management system. Reefer trucks are being used to consistently maintain an optimum environment for frozen foods to stay fresh. These trucks are now being fitted with third party GPS technologies for timely deliveries. This being a primary market disruption, is driving the growth of frozen food market in a positive direction.
The Rise Of IQF Food
IQF stands for ‘individually quick frozen’ which implies that all the items in a frozen food packet are frozen individually, and not as a block. The method involves passing of every individual piece of food through a blast chiller on a conveyor belt. This assures freshness in the food items even after thawing. An amount of peas for example, if frozen using IQF technique and packed in a carton, lidded tray, or crystallized PET tray will sell faster owing to its freshness as compared to the one frozen using ordinary refrigerant technique.
