omori au!

first things first, i don’t have a name for this yet. i’d appreciate suggestions! :3

also, i’ve drawn most of these designs in my sketchbook but it’s not completely done.

okay!

an echoey void. complete white. sometimes it glows, sometimes it reflects. there are people sometimes. there are no people other times. frequently, something colorful can be seen. there may be gardens, flowers, little islands sunk into the solid nothing. maybe a city here and there. 

stairs. a sister, pushed. there is not a thud. there is nothing. she does not hit the ground.

mari finds herself having glitched into the real world, amongst actual humans. she must find a way to get back to everyone.

sunny has lost it. he doesn’t know where his sister is. people live forever here. where is she? why would he do this? 

glitching starts. maybe some things clip into each other. maybe textures are missing. maybe a few holes pop up here and there. 

it gets worse.

sunny design - glowing originally, even brighter than the surrounding void. after mari falls he starts visually glitching, sometimes flickering to complete black. his face cannot be seen. his tears can, as they are the opposite color as him.

basil design - normal human face, with flower petals surrounding his head. lower body parts are vines that slowly form limbs. after mari falls he begins to wilt. as plants do, he depends a lot on others.

mari design - an ethereal bug girl. butterfly wings and antennae, also that classic character design with butterfly wings as ears :3 after her fall, she seems to real people like just a group of butterflies.

hero design - glass statue, stiff. he is full of water with some fish. after mari falls he begins to crack and leak. the fish start dying.

kel design - galaxies. in the center of it all, an eye. to see with, obviously. after mari’s fall, stars begin to flicker out. new eyes open. new distractions to prevent destruction.

aubrey design - a blur of colorful shapes, constantly changing. sometimes she’s 3d, sometimes 2d, sometimes even 1d. it’s hard to look straight at her. after mari’s fall, she begins to disappear for a few seconds before coming back. each time she vanishes, the wait is longer

also there’s no headspace :D

Hey!

I saw your post about your au Coldmori, and thought of an idea of it! Since its cold all year round, the lake would also likely be frozen most of the time as well. Maybe instead of swimming, the gang could have ice skated together a bunch as kids! Sunny could have fallen into the lake by falling through a thin patch of ice while skating or something. I don’t know, it was just a thought I had!

love this idea, I mean it just makes sense, y'know? like i dont really think anything else could really happen alternative to this, since all the AU is is that it's just cold all the time, it's not like the entire lake would just be a fucking hot spring or something, simple yet nice idea for a simple AU ty for the idea man! love it

When I have an Omori AU idea in the backburner for a while (because of a lemon demon song: Aurora Borealis), then only last month where my brainworms really fucking set off. And I haven't stopped daydreaming about it since. Fuck.

Omori brain rot and mythology/supernatural brain rot have combined into this thought process:

Thinking about Omori -> thinking about AUs -> thinking about that one semi-known Monstermori AU that has a major cultural appropriation problem with one of the characters (if you know you know) -> thinking about what I would do if I made my own -> researching Japanese folklore and yokai for Mari and Sunny -> where we are now

More research is needed to find what the rest of the main cast would be, but so far I have this:

Sunny is a bakeneko; a cat yokai with great shapeshifting abilities (including into human forms). They start as normal cats, and gain supernatural abilities from living long lives. Many are troublemakers and are said to bring bad luck, sometimes even eating and replacing their former masters, but some varieties (such as maneki neko) bring good luck and are kind to humans. They are able to consume things much larger than themselves, including many poisonous things, and can summon ghostly fires from their tails (often accidentally starting fires). Some also can reanimate fresh bodies and use them as puppets. [source]

I knew I wanted some sort of cat yokai for Sunny, and bakeneko are quite flexible with their stories and personalities/natures, so they work decently well. Even when taking human form and living life mostly as a human, bakeneko still retain some cat-like traits, and considering Sunny’s already cat-like nature, it fits.

Mari is a kitsune, specifically a holy kitsune. Most commonly, kitsune are known as trickster fox spirits with powerful shapeshifting abilities, some deciding to live human lives, but holy kitsune are servants of the Shinto deity Inari, and act as mediums and messengers to the gods. They are also known to provide good luck and ward off evil spirits. [source]

Once I saw the part about holy kitsune warding off evil spirits like the lily-of-the-valley, and combining that with Smug Mari™️ and the trickster side of kitsune, I knew it was perfect. Kitsune are known for taking the forms of beautiful women to play tricks on human men (Hero), so now we have two animal shapeshifter yokai masquerading as human siblings with a tendency for mischief; it’s perfect!

If anyone has any suggestions for what supernaturals Hero, Kel, Aubrey, and Basil could be, I’m all ears! Basil would definitely be something plant related, and I was thinking some sort of canine for Kel (bc of his high energy and enthusiasm, and also Hector) and a rabbit or hare for Aubrey (since she already has a connection to rabbits), but I have no ideas for Hero. A food related supernatural? Are there any that fit? I have no clue.

I’ve had this really simple Omori basil au idea for like a week and I haven’t made art for it yet but I want to shar

Basil just has a giant sentient plant. Like just a huge sunflower Venus-fly-trap monster that he keeps hidden away. Think kinda like Iron Giant mixed with Little Shop of Horrors.

But I haven’t gone anywhere with it because I don’t know what to do with the rest of the cast. Do I give them plants as well? Is basil the only one with a plant? Is the plant a manifestation of his something?

they got seated randomly (didn't get to choose their table)

i kinda imagined kel to be those religious guys who are genuinely really nice to basically anyone regardless of their "school clique", but can be unknowingly ignorant (he takes on a more mature role here since hero is not as available)

aubrey probably tries acting tough but is secretly very straight-laced

sunny is .. well. sunny. lol. he doesn't have mari-related trauma so he's kinda just an endearing weirdo here

basil isn't exactly a class student like them, but decides that their table is his favorite anyway and he becomes their friend too

oh also , they don't live nearby to each other in this au. makes their friendship seem more like a happenstance this way

not bothering me at all! i would shut off questions if i needed a break! i actually get really happy when people ask me things! (im a bit tired so i cant draw it but yes, you can give him a headpat, he likes them very very much but will never admit it) ah, never thought about this before! im not really IN the fandom part of omori so i dont know what type of personality the fandom has given to stranger.. i just thought they where just a thing to guide you to the truth and didn't have a.. personality?? but this would be a cool idea! im kinda confused on what this question is trying to get too though do you just want reassurance that the au you're thinking of making is a good one? or do you want me to make this into a thing?

So...hey! Man, how long has it been since the last Luck Swap post... anyways ^^; I know I ended off much farther along than this, buuut I... really don't like the old dream designs anymore, plus I basically completely skipped over all of what happens in headspace :"D Sooo I'm going to do some redesigns before going back to where we left off, and also try to better summarize the first little section! Sorry,,,

Anyways, this time I actually did the very first cutscene thingy, which I didn't before because I couldn't think of a good way to change "Everything is going to be okay",,, I think this works, though :)

Do note that I'm NOT going to be redrawing any of my old comics because...you can't make me :D They're mostly still accurate anyways...
