Canonwelding The Scarlet Pimpernel
As always constructive feedback is welcome.
Big Finish's, "Plight of the Pimpernel" introduction of Baroness Emmuska Orczy's legend/meme character, "The Scarlet Pimpernel" active from 1789 to 1794 played by four people, (Argana, the 6th Doctor, Peri, and Oliver) active throughout the, "Reign of Terror" 1789 to 1794 can easily be intergrated into Faction Paradox canon. Argana's obcession with the books means he would have tried to folow the book series's canon as practically as possible meaning some of it's details can be used aswell.
"Several prominent alchemists and engineers loyal to the Chamber and it's allies lost their lives in France, a catastrophe which the Chamber believed, (in typically self obsessed fashion) to be deliberately instigated just to spite it's members", The Analytical Engine, The Book of the War.
After becoming aware of, (possibly through the Prince of Wales, the future George IV) and survieling his activities it's likely that The Service would have recruited Baronet Sir Percy Blakeney, (Argana) in late 1789/early 1790 and later Oliver in 1793 as an agent so that they could get some of their aristocratic allies out alive, (likely Shadow Directory agents, though in the end very few) amongst those he rescued. They no doubt offered and provided assistance but this would have been limited and the League of minor aristocrats was self sufficient anyway.
Writing possibilities While alot of the book series's stories and details can be reused and or referenced any author must bare in mind the changes created by the Big Finish audio, (eg: No Marguerite and the inclsusion of the audio's historical characters) and the added details of The Service. Realistically speaking it would essentially be Christmas Special type story with the Star Chamber and Service appearing as framework cameo details. Whether he qualifies for the Cult of Celebrity Death is unknown.
Notes Oliver probably took on the persona of Percy Blakeney along with that of the Scarlet Pimpernel and may have eeded more direct Star Chamber asistance then his predecessor if ony to maintain his new triple identity. Argana didn't mention his Service recruitment to the Sixth Doctor and Peri becuase it's limited assistance and secret nature meant that for the League it didn't matter for the most part and the Argana obviously had other more important secrets on his mind.

George Brent, Paul Lukas, and Hedy Lamarr in Experiment Perilous (Jacques Tourneur, 1944)
Cast: Hedy Lamarr, George Brent, Paul Lukas, Albert Dekker, Carl Esmond, Olive Blakeney, George N. Neise, Margaret Wycherly. Screenplay: Warren Duff, based on a novel by Margaret Carpenter. Cinematography: Tony Gaudio. Art direction: Albert S. D'Agostino, Jack Okey. Film editing: Ralph Dawson. Music: Roy Webb.
Cary Grant was the original choice to play the male lead in Experiment Perilous and Gregory Peck was the second. If the role had gone to either of them, the film might be remembered as more than just the other gaslighting movie of 1944, but it has been eclipsed by George Cukor's Gaslight. The part of the psychiatrist Huntington Bailey went to the stolid old reliable George Brent. Dr. Bailey gets caught up in the drama of the Bederaux family when he has a chance encounter on a train with the slightly dotty Clarissa (Cissie) Bederaux (Olive Blakeney), who tells him she's writing the biography of her brother Nick (Paul Lukas), who has a beautiful wife named Allida (Hedy Lamarr). Bailey is intrigued, but not much more, until a mixup in luggage puts him in possession of one of Clarissa's bags. That, and the enthusiasm of his artist friends Clag (Albert Dekker) and Maitland (Carl Esmond) for Allida's beauty, draws him into the Bederaux circle and arouses his suspicions that Allida is not the mentally fragile woman that her husband and others say she is. When he learns that Cissie has died of a heart attack, he opens her valise and finds the manuscript of her biography and her diary, confirming his suspicion -- and putting him in jeopardy. This is solid melodrama stuff, and director Jacques Tourneur, who directed the Val Lewton romantic horror movies Cat People (1942) and I Walked With a Zombie (1943), knows just what to do with it. He's hindered a little by an over-complicated screenplay based on a novel by Margaret Carpenter, which necessitates a lot of flashbacks and switches in point of view, so the film doesn't proceed as smoothly as it might. But he maintains the right atmosphere as the plot moves to its resolution, which involves literally lighting gas as well as gaslighting. There's a goopy happy-ending coda to the main story that strikes the wrong note for the film, but Experiment Perilous deserves to be known as more than an also-ran.

Experiment Perilous
Tumblr media
Hedy Lamarr turned down LAURA and GASLIGHT (both 1944) before agreeing to let MGM loan her to RKO for Jacques Tourneur’s EXPERIMENT PERILOUS (1944, Criterion Channel, TCM), a film combining elements of both. As in the former, the leading man (George Brent here) falls in love with the leading lady (Lamarr) after seeing her portrait, and though talked about extensively, she’s kept off-screen until well into the running time. As in the latter, it’s the tale of a woman whose husband (Paul Lukas) is trying to make her appear insane. The filmmakers even changed the setting of Margaret Carpenter’s novel from the present to 1903, ostensibly feeling the passive heroine wouldn’t be believable as a modern woman (had they seen other Hollywood films?), but possibly to ride on GASLIGHT’s coattails. The film is quite beautiful to look at, with Tourneur’s careful attention to period detail, Tony Gaudio’s shadowy photography and RKO’s art department turning studio streets into New York City in the winter. Sadly, any resemblance to GASLIGHT ends there. Lukas’ motivation for manipulating the leading lady, jealousy, isn’t as focused as Charles Boyer’s or Clifton Webb’s. Critics have suggested he’s trying to control her sexuality, but since she’s presented as beautiful but innocent, that doesn’t ring true. And Brent, in a role originally intended for first Cary Grant and then Gregory Peck, is a big neutron star of acting here. There are a lot of scenes in which he’s on-screen alone, and it’s like staring at nothing, which is a pity given his strong work opposite Bette Davis and Barbara Stanwyck. It’s a relief when the film moves into an extended flashback without him. Lamarr and many critics have hailed her performance as her best. She’s very effective when we first see her as Lukas’ nervous, uncertain wife and in the flashbacks in which she convincingly plays a wide-eyed country girl. But after a while it becomes clear that she isn’t really connecting to her co-stars. She turns to face the camera a little too often to create big dramatic moments with nothing behind them. And she has a confrontation that’s supposed to be climactic but seems as committed as her ill-advised Joan of Arc in the more ill-advised THE STORY OF MANKIND. Lukas, however, is very strong, even when the character makes no sense, and you also get good support from Albert Dekker as Brent’s sculptor friend, Olive Blakeney as Lukas’ sister, Margaret Wycherly as Brent’s maid, Stephanie Bachelor as the woman he dumps for Lamarr and Julia Dean as Lamarr’s maid.

“ Percy! Er, Mr. Blakeney? “ Olive wasn’t sure which should be used, the man had never given her the time of day long enough to tell her. She was a little out of breath, being a radio host didn’t usually entail chasing down your interview subject. Do rich people always walk this fast... Olive thought, finally catching up, “ Did you forget about our appointment today? “
