NAHLA AL-ARIAN HAS been living a nightmare for the past seven months, watching from afar as Israel carries out its scorched-earth war against her ancestral homeland in the Gaza Strip. Like many Palestinian Americans, the 63-year-old retired fourth-grade teacher from Tampa Bay, Florida, has endured seven months of a steady trickle of WhatsApp messages about the deaths of her relatives. “You see, my father’s family is originally from Gaza, so they are a big family. And they are not only in Gaza City, but also in Deir al Balah and Khan Younis, other parts,” Al-Arian told me. Recently, the trickle of horrors became a flood: “It started with like 27, and then we lost count until I received this message from my relative who said at least 200 had died.” The catastrophe was the backdrop for Al-Arian’s visit last week to Columbia University in New York City. Al-Arian has five children, four of whom are journalists or filmmakers. On April 25, two of her daughters, Laila and Lama, both award-winning TV journalists, visited the encampment established by Columbia students to oppose the war in Gaza. Laila, an executive producer at Al Jazeera English with Emmys and a George Polk Award to her name, is a graduate of Columbia’s journalism school. Lama was the recipient of the prestigious 2021 Alfred I. duPont–Columbia Award for her reporting for Vice News on the 2020 explosion at the port of Beirut. The two sisters traveled to Columbia as journalists to see the campus, and Nahla joined them. “Of course, I tagged along. You know, why would I sit at the hotel by myself? And I wanted to really see those kids. I felt so down,” she said. “I was crying every day for Gaza, for the children being killed, for the women, the destruction of my father’s city, so I wanted to feel better, you know, to see those kids. I heard a lot about them, how smart they are, how organized, you know? So I said, let’s go along with you. So I went.” Nahla Al-Arian was on the campus for less than an hour. She sat and listened to part of a teach-in, and shared some hummus with her daughters and some students. Then she left, feeling a glimmer of hope that people — at least these students — actually cared about the suffering and deaths being inflicted on her family in Gaza. “I didn’t teach them anything. They are the ones who taught me. They are the ones who gave me hope,” she recalled. “I felt much better when I went there because I felt those kids are really very well informed, very well educated. They are the conscience of America. They care about the Palestinian people who they never saw or got to meet.” Her husband posted a picture of Nahla, sitting on the lawn at the tent city erected by the student protesters, on his Twitter feed. “My wife Nahla in solidarity with the brave and very determined Columbia University students,” he wrote. Nahla left New York, inspired by her visit to Columbia, and returned to Virginia to spend time with her grandchildren. A few days later, that one tweet by her husband would thrust Nahla Al-Arian into the center of a spurious narrative promoted by the mayor of New York City and major media outlets. She became the exemplar of the dangerous “outside agitator” who was training the students at Columbia. It was Nahla’s presence, according to Mayor Eric Adams, that was the “tipping point” in his decision to authorize the military-style raids on the campus.
On February 20, 2003, Nahla’s husband, Sami Al-Arian, a professor at the University of South Florida, was arrested and indicted on 53 counts of supporting the armed resistance group Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The PIJ had been designated by the U.S. government as a terrorist organization, and the charges against Al-Arian could have put him in prison for multiple life sentences, plus 225 years. It was a centerpiece case of the George W. Bush administration’s domestic “war on terror.” When John Ashcroft, Bush’s notorious attorney general, announced the indictment, he described the Florida-based scholar as “the North American leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Sami Al-Arian.” Among the charges against him was conspiracy to kill or maim persons abroad, specifically in Israel, yet the prosecutors openly admitted Al-Arian had no connection to any violence. He was a well-known and deeply respected figure in the Tampa community, where he and Nahla raised their family. He was also, like many fellow Palestinians, a tenacious critic of U.S. support for Israel and of the burgeoning “global war on terror.” His arrest came just days before the U.S. invaded Iraq, a war Al-Arian was publicly opposed to. The Al-Arian case was, at its core, a political attack waged by Bush’s Justice Department as part of a wider assault on the rights of Muslims in the U.S. The government launched a campaign, echoed in media outlets, to portray Al-Arian as a terror leader at a time when the Bush administration was ratcheting up its so-called global war on terror abroad, and when Muslims in the U.S. were being subjected to harassment, surveillance, and abuse. The legal case against Al-Arian was flimsy, and prosecutors largely sought to portray his protected First Amendment speech and charitable activities as terrorism. The trial against Al-Arian, a legal permanent resident in the U.S., did not go well for federal prosecutors. In December 2005, following a six-month trial, a jury acquitted him on eight of the most serious counts and deadlocked 10-2 in favor of acquittal on the other nine. The judge made clear he was not pleased with this outcome, and the prosecutors were intent on relitigating the case. Al-Arian had spent two years in jail already without any conviction and was staring down the prospect of years more. In the face of this reality and the toll the trial against him had taken on his family, Al-Arian agreed to take a plea deal. In 2006, he pleaded guilty to one count of providing nonviolent support to people the government alleged were affiliated with the PIJ. As part of the deal, Al-Arian would serve a short sentence and, with his residency revoked, get an expedited deportation. At no point during the government’s trial against Al-Arian did the prosecution provide evidence he was connected to any acts of violence. For the next eight years following his release from prison in 2008, Al-Arian was kept under house arrest and effectively subjected to prosecutorial harassment as the government sought to place him in what his lawyers characterized as a judicial trap by compelling him to testify in a separate case. His defense lawyers alleged the federal prosecutor in the case, who had a penchant for pursuing high-profile, political cases, held an anti-Palestinian bias. Amnesty International raised concerns that Al-Arian had been abused in prison and he faced the prospect of yet another lengthy, costly court battle. The saga would stretch on for several more years before prosecutors ended the case and Al-Arian was deported from the United States.
“This case remains one of the most troubling chapters in this nation’s crackdown after 9-11,” Al-Arian’s lawyer, Jonathan Turley, wrote in 2014 when the case was officially dropped. “Despite the jury verdict and the agreement reached to allow Dr. Al-Arian to leave the country, the Justice Department continued to fight for his incarceration and for a trial in this case. It will remain one of the most disturbing cases of my career in terms of the actions taken by our government.” That federal prosecutors approved Al-Arian’s plea deal gave a clear indication that the U.S. government knew Al-Arian was not an actual terrorist, terrorist facilitator, or any kind of threat; the Bush administration, after all, was not in the habit of letting suspected terrorists walk. Al-Arian and his family have always maintained his innocence and say that he was being targeted for his political beliefs and activism on behalf of Palestinians. He resisted the deal, Nahla Al-Arian said. “He didn’t even want to accept it. He wanted to move on with another trial,” Nahla said. “But because of our pressure on him, let’s just get done with it [because] in the end, we’re going leave anyway. So that’s why.” Sami and Nahla Al-Arian now live in Turkey. Sami is not allowed to visit his children and grandchildren stateside, but Nahla visits often.

Seven days. You thought that would have been more than enough to spend abroad, especially since you hadn’t seen Tony since your high school graduation - he had still been playing for the Mississauga Reps back then, and you had your sights set on your dream university. Together, worlds apart it seemed, you chased your dreams even if it meant being apart, but not once did you let it stand in the way of your friendship. You had received postcards from every city he played for, and some from those he travelled to during his away games - some were pinned up in your apartment back home, and others rested in a box with his old Mississauga jersey that he had gifted you all those years ago.
The pair of you had always tried to meet up sooner, but something had always come up. When he would be home for the summer, you were travelling or preparing for school, and when you were free there was training or tournaments to be had. You felt like mere ghosts in each other's lives until you were finally finished your degree and he had settled in Tampa long term. Finally, there was peace in your lives and you could reunite after many years of not seeing one another.
You had feared it was going to be awkward. That the two of you would have changed more than the other could accept. So you had booked a hotel room and had even gone as far as to plan out activities to do on your own in the event that your trip had been a failure - but those plans were quickly forgotten. It had been mere hours before it had begun to feel like old times, and you had slept in the hotel room for a single night before Tony had offered up his guest room to you.
You had the pleasure of watching not only one but two of his home games with the Tampa Bay Lightning, and he had shown you Tampa and what the city had to offer. You even had the pleasure of meeting some of his teammates who welcomed you with smiles and greetings of “this is the one you never shut up about” and it left you with butterflies. He still talked about you after all that time? Each busy day - thanks to the the long nights of catching up over cheap bottles of wine - blurred into the next and before you knew it, it had come to your final night in Tampa.
Turning in for the night, the door shut gently as you retired to the bedroom. It had only now begun to smell like you instead of the lingering scent of laundry detergent and vanilla candles that had once cloaked the unused room. With the taste of strawberry wine still lingering on your tongue, you stripped out of your tank top and jeans and slipped into the oversized t-shirt you had stolen from Tony and had slept in the last two days - you would have to remember to slip it into the laundry hamper in the morning.
A tired sigh shook you as you looked over the mess of items that had overtaken the top of his dresser and the small pile of clothes that had accumulated around your bag rather than inside. You dropped down to your knees beside your bag, chastising yourself: you should have thought about this sooner. You folded each article with care, making sure to leave a sweatshirt and leggings out for your flight home.
Each time you reached out a hand for another article, you found yourself looking towards the door. Truly, you hadn’t wanted to leave. Things had fallen back into place so effortlessly that the city had quickly felt like home. You didn’t want to leave the warm Florida weather behind for the cold Canadian winter that was waiting for you - and you didn’t want to have to say goodbye to Tony, not again. Not when you feared it may be another handful of years before you could see him again. Not when you lo-
You shook your head almost violently to clear the thought from your head before you could really think it.
No, you wouldn’t let yourself. Not Tony.
You couldn’t risk ruining this - or could you?
You were flying home tomorrow anyway. What did you have to lose?
Abandoning your belongings on the floor, you moved down the dark hallway. You moved around each obstacle as if you had lived there your entire life and came to Tony’s room at the end of the hall. You raised your hand, holding your breath as you hesitated for a moment. Your knuckles were mere millimeters from the door when it disappeared from in front of you as it was pulled back from its frame and squeaked on its hinges. Your face near paled, your teeth coming down on your lower lip as you came face to face with Tony whose jaw had gone slack with surprise.
He hadn’t expected to see you there.
You brought your arm back quickly, your face growing so hot it felt as if you were standing in front of the sun. Your eyes looked him up and down slowly - he had already made himself comfortable for the night had changed into sweatpants and abandoned the idea of wearing a shirt altogether - before raising back up to his face. You both stood like deer in headlights waiting to be struck, but you didn’t have to say a word. It took a mere look to know that his intentions had been the same as your own. You were both willing to risk years of friendship for just a single night.
Tony left his place in the doorway, his large hands finding your hips as he backed you up against the wall. Your body collided with the console table that decorated the hall, sending the pictures of the two of you from childhood and various other trinkets toppling over. It was all mere background noise to you as your body was pinned between Tony and the wall. You could feel his hands as they moved from your hips, upwards to wrinkle his loose t-shirt that was wrapped over your skin. His touch eased the fabric upwards as he grasped at your waist, hoisting you up from the ground. Your bare legs wound their way around his middle effortlessly, hooking at the ankle at the small of his back. It brought the two of you eye to eye, his deep brown eyes seeking yours for any sign of regret or hesitation that may have snuck their way into them with being so close to him for the first time.
But there was only excitement as your hands came to rest carefully on each side of his face, your fingertips tangling in the curls of his dark hair as you drew him into your lips. His was beard rough against your smooth skin as his lips moved against your own in a desperate kiss. For years you had been wondering what it might have been like and now you knew: it was electric. Your fingers knitted further into his hair, drawing him in deeper as you parted your lips for him. You near moaned into his mouth at the taste of him, your legs growing weak around him as his tongue dipped into your mouth and grazed along your own.
Tony didn’t let you slip, a single hand reached down and grasped a handful of your ass to keep you level with him. He was drinking you in, his hands and mouth eager to explore every bit of you that he had denied himself for so long. Each touch of his hand against your body was desperate. Even as he braced himself against the wall and sunk down to the floor with you coming to rest in his lap, he refused to let go of you. There would be no making it to the bedroom, even if it was no more than a few quick strides in one direction or the other.
You drew back from his lips, your forehead remaining against his, as you pressed up onto your knees. You were both quick to act, Tony reaching down to shift his sweatpants down to rest around the breadth of his thighs, and you pulled up the t-shirt just enough to give your hand access to your soaked panties. A single, hooked finger tugged them to the side before you lowered yourself back down. His hands offered your careful guidance, easing you onto his cock and earning a moan from your lips.
“Tony,” you gasped, your hands coming to rest on each of his shoulders to give yourself leverage as you began to ride him on the hallway floor.
“I know,” he groaned, one hand resting on your hip while the other raised to stroke over the supple skin of your cheek and the delicate lobes of your lips.
You kissed the pad of his thumb gently, as your hips rolled taking in every inch of him. You could feel every twitch, and every attempt at a thrust that Tony would make from the floor. Forehead against his, eyes gazing into those of the other, you rode your best friend until your legs were left quivering, and even then he didn’t let you stop. His hand took hold of your hips, and he guided you up and down his length. It felt as if your body was set ablaze, your core clenching around his cock and coaxing him to completion. When Tony came, his arms had wound around you, his fingers pressing firmly into your back as his face nuzzled into the crook of your neck. You felt every breath against your skin, and every thick web of cum he shot up inside you as he finished.
Fingers stroked through his thick curls as Tony drew back and found the support of the wall. You found his eyes again, and it brought a giddy smile to your lips - one that was matched by his own. It was a smile that made you forget that you had to catch a flight in the morning and left you thinking, we should have done this a long time ago.

The teacher who broke me
As a teacher, I draw my inspiration from my instructors growing up. And for me, a lot of that inspiration came from what NOT to do in the studio. I’ve had wonderful instructors who have left a great impression upon my teachings, but so many that didn’t. There’s one in particular who sticks with me to this day. Let’s call her Rita.
She came into my life when I was around 13 years old. She would come into our studio every now and then to set some choreography and travel back to LA afterwards. After about a year, she moved down to Austin and joined the faculty of our studio. We started to take regular classes from her, as well as perform her choreographic pieces. My first impression of her was that she’s tough, but tough was what I thought I needed for my training. And for some reason, she took a liking to me.
I had some natural charisma at this point, and proved to be a hard worker in class and rehearsals. Perhaps that’s why she took a liking to me. My 2nd year at the studio, she choreographed a piece for our small Teen company, and she made me the lead. I had a nice little solo in the beginning part. That’s how it was for a bit, getting leads and special parts in almost every piece, and proving to be a strong and reliable dancer at the time.
A few years later, Rita decided to leave and open up her own studio in Austin. As I was approaching my junior year of high school, I needed to start thinking about my training and goals for post high school. Seeing as I wanted to do more concert dance, and Rita was offering more Ballet and Modern classes at her studio, I figured this was the best move for my dance career.
A small group of us had migrated over and became her first pre-professional dance company in Austin. We had more than half of our classes with Rita, and she also choreographed a majority of our routines for the year. This is where I began to see more of this ugly side of her.
The first thing I noticed was how she phrased certain corrections given to me and the other students. For me, she had a “special” one for my ballet technique. Anytime she wanted me to engage my core, she’d point to my stomach and say, “pork chops!” Insinuating that my belly was hanging out as if I had just eaten pork chops. I heard this everyday in Ballet class for 5 years that she taught. Slowly this would eat away inside of me, and begin to plant seeds of negative body image that would last all the way into my mid 20s. Of course, these weren’t the only comments made to us regarding our bodies.
I recall a time where a bunch of us were at a dance workshop of hers in Tampa Bay, Florida. It was one Summer and we were taking classes all day for one whole week. We all stayed at a Best Western hotel, with a continental breakfast every day. One morning, we were down in the dining area grabbing food. I was well on my way to the waffle machine, my favorite breakfast staple. I had grabbed a banana on my way there when Rita stopped me. “Caitlin, you look so thin today!” She said with a pleasant grin on her face. “Oh thank you very much.” I replied. She glances down at my banana and asks, “Is that all you’re going to eat?” I look up and gesture towards the waffle machine, and before I can say anything she pats my hand holding the banana and says, “Oh no, I think that’s enough for you.” She walks away leaving me in a state of shock. Now being a 14 year old girl with low self esteem, I take her word as is, and eat only the banana for a full day of dancing. These instances happened far too often where I wanted nothing but to please my dance teacher, and believe what she has to say will help me make it into the dance industry. I truly believed she cared for me when she made comments like this, but I see now that it was wrong.
Another thing to know about me, is I have a ridiculously great memory when it comes to choreography. I can even recall some choreographic routines from when I was 12 years old. It is a blessing and a curse. A blessing because I know what I’m doing and can help my fellow peers out while working on a piece. A curse to me because of Rita. This means that I’m held to a higher standard of knowing every detail, and can’t fall anywhere below that. If I did fail, I would be susceptible to several repercussions. I’d be in more trouble than my peers if I couldn’t remember every little piece of choreography. That’s how it worked for me. These criticisms would translate into attendance too. If I missed one class to stay home and finish overdue homework, I would be reprimanded and threatened with different consequences, such as being dismissed from certain routines.
One semester, Rita noticed I had missed some classes due to a multitude of reasons including homework, physical therapy, familial obligations etc. One day she pulls me aside to let me know I have an ‘outstanding’ amount of absences and unless I can get to the 4:30 PM ballet classes on time to make them up, I would be removed from an upcoming dance, set by a professional choreographer coming into town. This would become a logistical nightmare! At the time, I got out of school at 4:10 PM, and to get out of our high school parking lot took 15-20 min, and to get to the studio took another 10 min roughly. Even if I got out of there right on time, I’d still be late to class, which isn’t tolerated with Rita’s standards. One day, I get there late and Rita asks me why I’m running late. Before I know it, I’m breaking down in tears from all the accumulated stress of trying to be the perfect student for her. I couldn’t take it anymore. She sees me crying and consoles me to let me know it’s ok and ‘of course’ I don’t have to stress about making it on time to a make-up class. She gives me a hug and we move on from there. As I looked back on this exchange years later, it bothered me immensely. I had come to realize the emotional manipulation that took place from being under her authority. She stresses how important it is for me to get to class on time, and once I break down, pretends it doesn’t matter. No apology. No accountability. Nothing. It’s almost as if she enjoys the power of bringing me down, just to be the one to build me back up again.
I stayed with this instructor all the way up until I graduated high school. I went off to college, one she recommended to me, and began to undo a lot of the damage she had done to me for years in training. By the end of my tenure with Rita, I was mentally, emotionally and physically burned out. I thought I had lost my passion for dance after being beaten down day after day under her leadership. I rediscovered that passion again in college. I thrived in a more encouraging environment, and saw great strides in my technique and personal growth throughout those 4 years. I didn’t know it was possible to feel good about myself and improve my dancing at the same time. Years later when I began therapy, I begun to unpack a lot of the trauma inflicted by Rita, and came to terms with the emotional and mental abuse I faced from her. I allowed myself to start healing, and recognized I don’t have to let her teachings and words weigh heavy upon me for the rest of my life. I could be happy and live free once again. I can successfully say I’ve been able to do that for the past 5 years. I have been healing from those wounds. I live a better life knowing she has no power over me. I can use this motivation to help build a nurturing environment for my students, something Rita could never give me.
What about you all? Do you have someone who negatively influenced you? How did you overcome it? What are some hard lessons you’ve learned in the process?

A father and son have been apprehended after they allegedly beat up a man at a wedding in Florida leaving him unconscious.
The Volusia County Sheriff's Office (VCSO) said Joel O'Grady, 38, and his son Julian Falkinburg, 21, from Sanford, got into a fight at a wedding reception in Lake Helen on Saturday, September 3.
According to Tampa Bay Criminal Defense attorney firm Goldman Wetzel, the rate of violent crime in Florida is 378.4 per 100,000 people. Despite the latest incident, it added violent crime had seen a drop of 30 percent since 2010.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood said the victim was hit in the head and face multiple times "and kicked even after becoming unresponsive."
According to police, the victim was taken to a nearby hospital while the father-son duo fled.
In a Thursday, September 8, Facebook update, Chitwood confirmed both had been arrested by Daytona Beach police.
He added: "They were taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail and booked early Saturday morning.
"O'Grady posted $100,000 bond and was released overnight, while Falkinburg posted $50,000 bond and was released Saturday afternoon. Conditions of their release include no contact with the victim."
Both had been wanted on charges of aggravated battery.
The sheriff said in the same Facebook post: "This has to be our first father and son scumbag of the week post, but they earned it. Not just kicking a man when he's down, but when he's unconscious."
Newsweek has contacted the VCSO for comment.
There have been numerous cases where fights have broken out at weddings that have resulted in law enforcement becoming involved.
In July, a woman was shot after a fight broke out at a wedding reception in Philadelphia.
According to police, the 26-year-old victim was shot in the leg at the 4200 block of Macalester Street in Feltonville.
A Florida bride and groom were arrested earlier this year following a fight on their wedding night.
The newlyweds were charged with domestic violence by Naples police who had been alerted to a disturbance at the Hilton Hotel.
Naples police said they found Stefanie Ginas in the salon room of the hotel with several blood spots on her wedding dress, which also had its left strap torn.
In 2021 a bride was arrested after biting a police officer at a wedding reception in Memphis. The bride had allegedly been involved in one of several fights and was charged after reportedly biting the officer on the shoulder.

"That’s 45 victims we were able to identify this year. The valuable relationships that we have with the social services organizations who join us in these operations make it possible for these women to get help and be emancipated from this way of life."FLORIDA MOM TURNS ONLINE DETECTIVE POST-STROKE, HELPING MAKE REAL-LIFE ARRESTSOf those arrested, 35 are suspected to be in the country illegally, and are from the countries of Cuba, Chile, Venezuela, Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia or the Bahamas.Forty-one of the suspects confessed to detectives they were married; 13 said they received government assistance, 42 brought illegal drugs to the undercover location; two had firearms on them; 18 were from other states; the oldest person arrested was 76-year-old Frank Bydairk; and the youngest was 18-year-old Latrice Vilsaint. While talking to reporters Thursday, Judd said one man who was arrested left his 1-year-old daughter at home alone while he went to have sex in Polk County. "These charges don’t involve students, and Rogers was not on duty as a teacher, but this kind of conduct still has no place in our school system.
"Rogers, according to the district, was hired in April 2013, and worked for Real Academy since 2017. Polk County Public Schools told the station it is moving forward with the process of terminating Rogers’ employment with the district.FEDERAL AIR MARSHAL ARRESTED IN FLORIDA FOR ALLEGEDLY PUSHING AND INJURING GIRLFRIENDThe sheriff’s office said three suspects were Disney employees, and another worked at a Disney hotel. The sheriff’s office said three suspects were Disney employees, and another worked at a Disney hotel."This guy has marshmallows for brains," Judd said while talking of a man who saw police and watched a man and woman enter the room. No Longer A Married Man, Tom Brady Took Off His Wedding Band
No Longer A Married Man, Tom Brady Took Off His Wedding Band
Before the game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday evening in Pennsylvania, Tom Brady was seen leaving his hotel without wearing his wedding band. The 45-year-old quarterback sported a white T-shirt underneath a button-down shirt in a lighter shade of blue and teamed it with jeans in a darker shade of blue and white sneakers. The hand he did not wear a ring was…

#Cbs meteorologist atlanta ausmus series#
The Angels went 7-18 in September and finished 37 games behind the AL West champion Houston Astros. But Los Angeles’ AL wild card hopes abruptly fell apart in late July with a 2-5 homestand against AL cellar-dwellers Baltimore and Detroit, starting with a 16-inning loss to the Orioles that depleted their pitching staff. The Angels went 12-6 immediately after Skaggs’ death on July 1, improving to 54-49 while rallying together in the wake of their well-liked starting pitcher’s sudden death. He did all of those things while maintaining an apparently strong relationship with Trout and his other players, but the results never showed up. Those types of decisions are not in my control, so I don’t worry too much about them.”Īusmus was hired to provide a fresh voice to the Angels after nearly two decades under Scioscia while incorporating new-school strategies in analytics and player management. You learn to take it with a grain of salt. There was a point in 2015 in Detroit, my second year there, it came out I was being fired, and (I) was there two more years. … To be honest with you, I’ve learned to shrug those things off.
#Cbs meteorologist atlanta ausmus series#
He was Scioscia’s bench coach for six seasons, winning a World Series ring along the way, before he left to manage the Tampa Bay Rays.Īusmus on Sunday acknowledged he had heard the rumors linking Maddon, who has said he still owns a home near Anaheim, to an Angels return. The 65-year-old Maddon spent 31 years in the Angels organization, starting as a catcher and logging lengthy assignments as a minor league manager and a major league assistant coach, along with two stints as the Angels’ interim manager. The Cubs’ only World Series-winning manager of the past century decided to leave the club by mutual agreement last week. Rumors began to swirl about Ausmus’ job security last week while Maddon’s future was being debated in Chicago. Despite the majors’ ninth-largest payroll this season at $164.4 million and the ideal franchise cornerstone in Trout, Los Angeles has made the playoffs just once in the past decade and hasn’t won a postseason game since 2009. The 50-year-old Ausmus was unable to stop the Angels’ streak of five straight non-playoff seasons and four straight losing records during the prime of AL MVP favorite Mike Trout’s career. “He navigated this franchise through one of its most difficult seasons with class and professionalism.”Įppler and Ausmus didn’t immediately return phone messages seeking comment. “I want to thank Brad for his hard work and dedication to this organization over the last two seasons as both a special assistant and a manager,” Eppler said in a statement. Only five major league regulars made it through the entire season without going on the injured list. Beset by injuries and tragedy, Ausmus’ team struggled for nearly every month of the summer, except for a burst of inspired play through its grief over the midseason death of pitcher Tyler Skaggs in a hotel room in Texas.
