More Octopus Garden goodness coming right atcha! 🐙✨

Deep below the ocean’s surface, just off the Central California coast, thousands of octopus gather near an extinct underwater volcano. The Octopus Garden is the largest known aggregation of octopus anywhere in the world. In 2018, researchers first observed thousands of pearl octopus (Muusoctopus robustus) nesting on the deep seafloor at this site near Davidson Seamount.

Over a period of three years, MBARI and a team of collaborators used high-tech tools to monitor the Octopus Garden and learn exactly why this site is so attractive for deep-sea octopus. These images are from a 4K time-lapse camera we deployed at the site for six months, from March 2, 2022, to August 26, 2022. This advanced camera platform operates at extreme pressure two miles deep (3,200 meters).

We captured and stored a photo every 20 minutes—the result is a remarkable peek into the cycle of life at this unique biological hotspot. Watch more incredible video captured at the Octopus Garden on our YouTube channel.

Secrets of the Octopus Garden revealed!

Just offshore of Central California, deep below the ocean’s surface, thousands of octopus gather near an extinct underwater volcano. Welcome to the Octopus Garden, the largest known aggregation of octopus anywhere in the world.

In a new study published today in Science Advances, a team of researchers from MBARI, NOAA's Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the University of New Hampshire, and the Field Museum confirmed that deep-sea pearl octopus gather at the Octopus Garden to mate and nest.

Female octopus nest in cracks and crevices bathed by warm water. Using high-tech tools, including many instruments designed by MBARI engineers, the team revealed how warmth from deep-sea thermal springs accelerates the development of octopus eggs. Scientists believe the shorter brooding period increases a hatchling octopus’ odds for survival.

The size of the Octopus Garden—likely more than 20,000 total octopus nests—and the abundance of other marine life that thrives there underscore the need to understand and protect the hotspots of life on the deep seafloor from threats like climate change and seabed mining. Who's up for a pillow fight with an octopus? 🐙⁠ ⁠. These pillows may be a little harder than your average square of fluff! Pillow lavas look like rounded blobs of solidified lava. They are formed as lava extrudes slowly out of the seafloor, and the outer edge is cooled very quickly by the cold seawater. . Think about squeezing toothpaste out of a tube, but instead of it flowing freely, the outer skin of the toothpaste hardens as soon as it touches air. Pillow lavas come in a variety of sizes and shapes, and each of these shapes can tell us a bit about the eruption that formed them. .
