Tagetes (marigold) and Ochlodes sylvanoides (woodland skipper)
A few weeks ago, I was at the Bloedel Conservatory and I took some photos of this butterfly, the woodland skipper. I mentioned it had a familiar face and, sure enough, I took these photos this morning in my back garden.
The woodland skipper is native to British Columbia and the western United States. All butterflies have four wings but most hold them in such a way that it appears they only have two. When the woodland skipper is at rest. it holds it’s four wings separately and the forewing and hindwing can be seen clearly.
Many butterflies are brilliantly colored but this makes them an obvious target for predators. The woodland skipper has a different strategy, hang out camouflaged in the trees and keep a low profile. Like many butterflies woodland skippers use chemical signals (pheromones) to find mates. They don’t need pretty colors to advertise their availability because a good, strong perfume seems to work just fine.

whats your favorite moth & butterfly?
I think for moths it's probably a tie between death's head hawkmoths and elephant hawkmoths.
in terms of butterflies, I'm not actually sure, but I really like skippers just in general. I think they're really cute.
as a bonus here's a photo of a skipper that we saw back in 2016. I think it's probably a male large skipper (ochlodes sylvanus)

Stor bredpande (Ochlodes sylvanus)
En han. Bemærk den mørke streg på overvingen. Dette er et duftfelt, som består af særlige duftskæl. Hunnen mangler dette sorte felt i forvingen.
Large Skipper (Ochlodes sylvanus)
A male. Notice the black line on its front wing. This is a scent mark consisting of scent scales. The female lacks this mark.
