Design; 6/10 - while I love the goober, he is still slightly unsettling. I really like the expressiveness his little lip flap along with his ears give him, but other than that he's just an orange blob. Lots of children's characters suffer from a trait I've named tinypupilbigeye syndrome, and small is not exempt from this.

Effectiveness/Purpose; 9/10 - (I've never watched this show, feel free to correct me in comments or rbs :] )

Small seems to be designed for the one sole purpose of being the chaotic "source of the issue" character in big and small, directly in contrast to big's gentle demeanor. I'm sure all of you have seen the

toothpaste incident

and that is just an example of his behavior. I did play the game and can confirm he acts like that for most of it. Anyways he pulls off the demonic gremlin swag very well and is great character writing (from what I've seen)

oops lied abt that being the last, here’s a thing re alim as inquisitor & the divine election  :

he doesn’t endorse leliana.     they’re old friends & alim trusts leliana to have mages’ best interests at heart, but she’s never had first-hand experience with life in a circle, being neither a mage nor a templar / -adjacent.     the idea of mages having full autonomy is noble, & alim does recruit the rebel mages in a full alliance, but in practice he doesn’t see it as practical.     mages need a place to learn to control their magic, a place where they can train safely, safely for themselves & for non-mages.

alim’s life in kinloch hold was not exactly good,   —   his first experience with the circle was being taken in by templars at age seven & having his baby brother torn from his arms left wondering for years to come what became of him,   —   there were definitely days, weeks, months even where he wanted nothing more than to flee the wretched tower.     but he learned control, over himself & his magic, & he genuinely enjoyed studying there, pouring over all the library’s texts, practicing spells, learning all the little intricacies that he would likely not have learned had he not been taken into the circle.     & while life in the circle was no walk through tulips, he’s not just a mage, he’s also an elf   ( one that was “born a woman”, at that ) , &, having been to denerim’s alienage, alim can safely say that he vastly prefers having grown up in a circle to the prospect of having grown up in an alienage.

he also does not endorse cassandra, believing her, despite not technically being a templar, not having the perspective necessary to understand how to balance mages & templars in a single space.     & alim does agree that templars are a necessity   —   he doesn’t trust them as far as he can nudge them, but he does see that their magic dispelling capabilities are highly useful in combating abominations & demons.     still, he believes they need better training, still remembering the blood mage uprising in kinloch hold, how easily a handful of mages using slightly more powerful magic than circle mages tend to practice overtook an entire circle.     while alim & vivienne don’t agree on everything, & he’s not a performative bootlicker, alim trusts that a mage of vivienne’s disposition would best understand how to keep mages in comfort while not allowing for abominations & chaos, & who better than a mage to instruct templars how to combat willfully destructive mages  ;     her status within orlais’ court combined with her alliance with the inquisition isn’t a bad bonus.

i have so many fucking thoughts ohgoghg. okay i need to mske lists or im going to explode.

things i want to be good at but am not:

home made paper making (i see ppl making this thick natural slightly textured pastel colored paper and it seems so magical and beautiful. it makes me want to write down all my poetry by hand and cherish it)

balloon animal makinng (its for my clown world and it would be such a delight to be able to make little animals for friends and kids)

speaking danish (my grandmother is a danish immigrant and its always interested me, its the only part of my heritage i feel any actual connection to)

sewing (i want to make accessories and clown suits oht of patterned fabrics and lace and such i want it so bad

sign language (i took 3 yrs of classes and found such joy in it, as someone with nearly full aphantasia i struggle to translate my thoughts into visual things and using asl allowed me to find that physicality in a beautiful way)

playing theremin thjs one is very unrealistic bc i am so bad at music and idek how a theremin works or how music stuff works but i just long for it its the only instrument that calls to me

if you’re interested heres some of my personal fondness thoughts on him.. big warning for the mega long read ahead aye

as we alr know sollux's rejection of participation somewhat mirrors dave's rejection of heroism, but even without getting cooked to completion i still find sollux's character v compelling beyond the fourth wall

as someone who doesnt get a pinch of that Protagonist Sparkle to begin with, he can openly say he wants to leave anytime…. and unlike dave, he actually Can leave the scene anytime. but he can never be truly Free from the story via permanent character death like the other trolls.

his irrelevancy is indeed relevant - he’s there so u can point him out.

while his image is intended to be a relic of past internet subculture, his role is not only about hehehaha being a Chad or a 2000s cyberforum 2²chan haxxor ragequit gamebro.

his continued existence also happens to add a Bit to the overarching themes of homestuck! a Bit that gives him longer-lasting thematic relevance compared to the trolls who could’ve had more character potential but didnt get to survive beyond the main story.

the Bit in question:

his defiance contributes to the illusion of agency (treating characters = people with autonomy). he’s “aware” of it, and that recognition is worth noting enough to forcibly keep him alive as both reward and punishment.

considering how his personality & classpect is designed its definitely a very haha thing for hussie to do LOL. he’s made to be op asf so he's resigned to doing dirty work, gradually deteriorating along the way but never truly dying. as fans have mentioned before, him openly rejecting involvement after a while of grim tolerance is like if the sim u were controlling suddenly stopped, looked up and gave u the finger while u were step six into the walkthrough for Every Possible Sim Death Animation.

but since he’s just a sim… the more he hates it, the more you keep him around. if ur sim started complaining abt your whimsical household storyline you’d definitely keep that little fuck.

but yeah i like that sollux is just idling. the significance of his presence being that one dude who's always reliably Somewhere, root core Unchanged, no individual ambitions (possibly due to fear of consequence?), and design-wise: a staple representative product of his time.

compared to dirk's character, who has aged phenomenally well into the present (themes of control + AR + artificial intelligence, clearer exploration around navigating relationships/sexuality, infinite possibilities of self-splinterhood and trait inheritance), sollux's potential is really... contained. bitter. defeatist. limiting and frustrating in the way old tech is.

the world continues moving on to shinier, brighter, more advanced automated things - minimalist and metaverse or whatever but sollux is still here 🧍‍♂️ going woohoo redblue 3d. (tho personally i imagine his vibe similar to what the kids call cassette futurism on pinterest mixed w more grimy grunge insectoid influences eheh)

conceptually-speaking,

at the foundation of it all, the rapid pace of modern development was built off the understanding of ppl like sollux in the past, who were There actively at work while the dough was still beginning to rise

thats one of the cool things abt the idea of trolls preceding humans! the idea that trolls like sollux excelled back when lots of basic shit still needed to be discovered, building structures like networks and codes from scratch, and humans will eventually inherit and reinvent that knowledge in ways that become so optimized it makes the old manual effort seem archaic, slow, and labour-intensive.

but despite information/resources/shortcuts being more accessible now, much of the new highly-anticipated stuff released on trend still end up unfinished, inefficient, or expiring quickly due to cutting corners under severe capitalistic pressures

meanwhile, some of the old stuff frm past generations of thorough, exploratory and perfectionistic development still remains working, complete, and ever so sturdy.

those things continue to exist, just outside our periphery with either:

zero purpose left for modern needs (outdated/obsolete)

or

far too important to replace or destroy, bcs of its surprisingly essential and circumstantial usefulness in one niche specific area.

which are honestly? both points that sum up sollux pree well.

Steve shows up to work one day with a baby bjorn complete with sleeping baby on his chest and Robin is like Steve....what the fuck?

And Steve says "I would've called you last night but she'd only stop crying when I held her and my parents were fighting, obviously, and I had to figure out how to make her bottle then I fell asleep with her on top of me and I think my dad legitimately forgot about us even though this is his fault, and there's no one to take care of her so I had to bring her. Sorry."

That is a lot and answers very few of Robin's questions.

"who...is she?"

Steve brightens and smiles down at the baby who's tiny baby fist is scrunched up in his work vest. "Oh! My half sister. Her mom works for one of my dad's business partners and brought her to my parents while they were away last week so they came home, mostly to dump her off on a nanny they forgot to hire--hence my baby holder here--and fight. Turns out dad cheating is easier to ignore when there isn't actual proof of it."

"oh. Woah."

"yeah. Anyways, ready to rewind some tapes?"

So they start work Steve logging returns into the computer and cupping the baby whose name I don't know yet's head. Then the little baby wakes up, making little baby noises, and Robin is not one for babies really, but Steve coos and picks her hand off his chest and waves it at Robin.

"see, that's your auntie Robin! Say hiii auntie Robin!"

The baby chews her tongue at Robin and blows a spit bubble.

And how is Robin supposed to not be charmed by that?

"awww," she says, letting the baby grab her finger, "yeah, I'm your auntie Robin. Your big brother's gonna take care of you so good huh? You'll know your way around retail in no time."

Steve giggles.

It is then that The Gremlins decide to show up and Cause Noise. Baby sister starts to cry and Steve takes her to the back to get her to calm down and change her, comes out (ignores the party's questions. Giving them Ultimate Mom Pose with Bonus Effect of Baby) hands her to Robin who is a little nervous but she will not let her new niece (?) Down, and goes back to find and heat up a bottle.

Eddie, who drove the gremlins and was looking for something in his van comes in, sees Robin holding the baby and is like huh? What's this?

And then Steve comes out with a bottle and a baby blanket over his shoulder, reaches for the baby from Robin and tries to get her to latch on the bottle with quiet words and gentle hands and Eddie is not okay he's not fine he's having a melt down because Steve with the kids is one thing but Steve with a Baby is something very different and he should not be expected to keep it together seeing this
