One Bad Day: Ra's al Ghul is Great
I've been reading each of these One Bad Day instalments as they come out and trying to think about what I do and don't like about them. Riddler's was pretty bleh, Two-Face and Mr. Freeze's was decent, Catwoman had a pretty good one from what I can recall and Bane, Clayface and Penguin's stories were fantastic stand-outs. One Bad Day: Penguin may be one of my favorite Gotham stories period now.
But One Bad Day: Ra's al Ghul is fantastic. Once again, Tom Taylor knows what he's doing and it shows.
Spoilers ahead, by the by! I assume there'll be a cutoff at some point but I'm still new to Tumblr so-
A running theme in all of these One Bad Day stories is that it takes one of Batman's main rogues and explores a new facet of their personal history that hasn't gotten as much focus in order to make a narrative that is uniquely theirs. Ra's has far too much history for even a large book like the OBD series to properly get into, but the angle Taylor took - the extinction of an animal kingdom connected to Ra's personal history - was a strong angle to take.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of strong, Ra's himself is an absolute powerhouse in this story. His global influence, his machinations that have laid undetected for years, his cold efficiency, his brutality. It's all shown off in an excellent manner. OBD stories likewise attempt to show off the best of what their chosen villain can do, and this absolutely fits for Ra's. And because of how the story is presented, you... get it. You empathize with Ra's, and because he's specifically targeting the corporate parasites that us normal people get so furious about and can do nothing about, we're almost... behind him? So like with the Penguin story, we find ourselves as an audience rooting against Batman for the right reasons.
Tumblr media
Speaking of, I love how this story really digs into the status quo of the planet and why DC's corporate horribleness matches the corporate horribleness of our real world. Batman is protecting the worst people on Earth because of his values of protecting all life (which, to be clear, I agree with Batman's philosophy that all life is precious) and as Damian so succinctly points out, the fact they have to do this in the first place makes their place in this whole war of Ra's vs the Planet-Killers... questionable.
Ra's might be a murderer. But he's right. These old men and reckless new blood kids aren't going to change in a heartbeat to protect the world. They do need to be taken out of the way if real change is going to happen. Murder is an extreme method, but it does get results... especially if it's not seen as murder.
That doesn't mean Batman is wrong for wanting to protect people, though.
Tumblr media
Especially from Ra's.
Tumblr media
Ra's set out to kill thirty men. Thirty men responsible for the death and decay of the world. But because he needed to take out eleven people in one room, he killed three thousand at once in what would surely be one of the greatest 'accidents' of modern history. This is an extremely brief part of the story, but it has so many implications. How many were invited to the summit who would use the position as a voice for clean energy? How many would have helped Ra's indirectly by using their position to change the world for the better? You can claim that Ra's wouldn't have let anyone be in that hall who could really benefit the world, but I have to doubt that because of his actions and his very subjective judgement on the matter. And then this begs more questions - how many others, how many innocents died so that Ra's al Ghul could kill thirty men? How many bodybags provides the cost of secrecy?
And how much does that undermine his mission?
Let's talk about Ra's al Ghul, Batman and Robin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's an interesting juxtaposition between how Ra's and Batman are presented in the story. Both are depicted as emerging from the shadows when meeting the other faction on the field, both are depicted as temperamental and angry in spite of their calm facade and calculated nature. Ra's understands Batman, Batman understands Ra's, but their clashing philosophies means they will never truly stand on the same playing field.
And that comes to a boiling point in the best way possible.
Tumblr media
This was a move that shocked me when I first read, but it makes perfect sense. It not only shows the brutality of Ra's, but when you realize the ultimate intention was to bring him back with the Lazarus Pit, it also shows the plan and how much Ra's respects Batman. He killed him, but only temporary - the moment he was 'done', Batman was allowed to come back. And when Bruce thought he was going to genuinely die, his last act was to hand his cowl to his son and make Damian promise not to give in and murder Ra's then and there. So Damian doesn't kill his grandfather, even if every boiling vein in his body makes him want to, and then Batman comes back.
During the final battle between the two, it goes beyond a simple moral clash. It goes beyond Ra's and Batman. It becomes about Damian and showing him what the true path in life is, showing him who's justice is what the world truly needs.
I've been thinking about what Robin's role in this story was (he didn't get as much spotlight as I was hoping, massive Damian fan that I am) but I'm content with what I got because of what he represents. He's the balance. He's the median point between both Ra's and Batman, who recognizes what's wrong with the world and seeks to make it better (see: Robin (2021)) but refuses to stoop to the level of a base murderer in order to do so.
I question if this really is all for Damian, as Bruce and Ra's claim in their desperation. It feels more like this conflict is about them, and Damian is the proof in the conflict between the two, the one who can decide who is 'right'. Damian agrees with Ra's - "Are you so sure we should be safeguarding the worst people on Earth?" - but he also agrees with Bruce - "He believes in preserving life, Grandfather. That's hardly a bad thing." - and gave both perspectives within the same minute. He's a counterbalance to both Bruce and Ra's perspectives because he stands between them and is capable of seeing the positives and negatives of both in a way that neither of the grown men can. It's why he sat to the side while Ra's committed his atrocities and waited for his father to return, but so violently opposed Ra's prior to his father's death.
This is, ultimately, a story of righteous anger clashing with unquestioning morality. This is about wrath against the rich and powerful poisoning the planet versus the desire to save others from death and not fall to the level of a base murderer. This is about two clashing ideals of justice.
Ra's 'wins' in achieving his goal and Bruce can never expose the truth or risk undoing all the legitimate good he's done, but Batman will never stop hunting Ra's until he is punished for what he's done. But the true resolution - the true answer on who was 'right' - is never answered, because Damian never truly sides with one or the other. He spends the latter half of the story sitting to the side observing, contemplating, and working through his own complicated emotions on everything that happened. Damian never says who is right and who is wrong, and Ra's never gives him a chance to, as he decides to sate Batman's desire for justice by simultaneously punishing himself and escaping further punishment by flinging himself to the bottom of the canyon.
Tumblr media
Ra's gets to be at peace, and whether that's deserved or not is unclear. But he got his big win, as it were, and in the final pages it seems one of his first acts after that was restoring the extinct species of wolves that meant so much to him. It's an ending that leaves the reader content and, while not a complete thematic resolution, is purposeful and feels right for the long and complicated story of Ra's al Ghul.
Also he canonically killed Elon Musk and Alex Jones in this continuity and labeled them among the 'top thirty greatest threats to the planet' so that's neat

What are some of your fave Ra's issues? I really enjoyed his one bad day issue but was curious!
One bad day is one of the good ones!
I really enjoyed Bride of the Demon, i’d recommend that if you enjoyed the environmentalism aspect of OBD. He’s trying to repair the ozone layer, among other things. Like rizzing up an old actress and marrying her.
Batman: The Knight #9 & #10 is what drew me to him and prompted my deep dive. It also opened my mind up to the idea of Ra’s training Bruce (it was a concept i previously disliked a lot)
Batman/Superman (2019) #7-#9 have some good moments. Batman and Superman interrupt Ra’s while he’s at conflict with General Zod.
Birth of the Demon is more or less his origin story. It shows you a bit of what he was like before he was Ra’s al Ghul and how he got to be that way.
and Damian’s 2021 Robin run. Issue #4 has some very sweet moments with Ra’s and Damian. But the entire run is worth reading, both because Ra’s is hot but also because it’s his most recent redemption arc.
I have also affectionately dubbed Robin 2021 as ‘Keeping Up Wtih The Al Ghul’s’ because….my god. the Family Drama with Ra’s is a bit off the charts.
Any issue where Bruce and Ra’s have to team up is probably good too. Very silly.

I keep thinking about reblogging scenes from One Bad Day: Two-Face, but honestly the story pisses me off and depresses me so much that I think I’d Prefer Not To.
It was just such a hateful, simplistic take on Harvey, one that completely erases all tragedy and trauma in his past and just turns him into a pointlessly spiteful monster who can’t be saved because there’s nothing to save.
And its use of canon just makes it a mess. It references lots of Post-Crisis stuff but ignores “Eye of the Beholder” and “Crime and Punishment.” It wipes out Peter Tomasi’s New 52 stories but includes Scott Snyder’s “My Own Worst Enemy.” Nanako is mayor which doesn’t fit current canon, given how he story ends. Falcone is still alive, but TLH is referenced visually.
Between this and her Gilda story, Mariko Tamaki really doesn’t seem to like Harvey at all. She writes Stephanie Brown as the Robin stand-in who goes “Ew, Batman, why do you give a fuck about a monster like Two-Face?” And then Tamaki breaks Harvey’s characterization in a way to prove Stephanie right at the end. The fact that Steph fans love this story is just insult to injury.
At first, I was super depressed by how Tamaki completely changed Harvey’s dynamic with his father. But that didn’t matter anymore once I read the whole story, which is just plain bad all around. Harvey is reduced to an irredeemable, one-note monster who goes after his loving father for absolutely no reason other than pointless cruelty, and everyone—including Harvey—calls Bruce a fool for trying to save Harvey when there’s nothing to save.
I’m just glad we still have the operatic arc in Detective Comics that negates Tamaki’s story from canon and is getting more attention. But now I’m really hoping it truly does end with something of a lasting redemption for Harvey, because I can’t tolerate the thought of OBD having any actual impact on the character from here on out.
I’d honestly take Batman: Jekyll & Hyde over this. At least that one is entertaining and ridiculous. This is just shallow, mean-spirited, and callow.

Finnieeee congrats on 1k followers! 🫂 I don't know if you are still up to it, but if you are would you please do number 9 (🎀 No.9: Ever Fallen In Love With Someone 🎀) for me?
Okay, okay, so uh- You already know me a little, so I won't make this unbearably long, haha! Sooo... I'm hispanic! English is not my first language and I get kinda insecure about my accent. If you mix that up with me tripping over my own tongue, you can just imagine how embarrasing it is for me to speak with someone who is a native speaker. Being awfully shy and having social anxiety does not help one bit either, haha- What else? Oh! I love, love, LOVE physical affection! I'm a very touchy-feely person, but I respect people's boundries! I'm very sensitive, I can't stand conflict or loud noises ;; More superficial stuff about myself is that I'm very short, kinda chubby and I feel most comfortable wearing sweaters and skirts or dresses! Soft, pastel colors are my favorite and I always look for a cottagecore-y aesthetic! Overall, I love cutesy stuff
Again, don't feel pressured to answer if the event is already over! Thank you for reading, love youuu 💗

ok so i knew he had to be a sweet, big, soft boy and i think OBD ozzie is perfect in every way. he's so self-aware, so humbled, and has such a big heart. plus he's got an adorable double chin and big thick fingers which... kjhkjhasd
hey he gets it with the accent thing, he feels a little out of place too. and since his downfall and rise back to the top he is so hyper-aware of everything he says or does. he doesn't want to hurt any feelings, doesn't want to ruin any friendships or partnerships. which is great, because it shows how loving he really is, but it also means he gets a bit too concerned and trips over his words or stutters when he's around someone he really cares for
he doesn't suffer from any kind of social anxiety though, not when it comes to interacting with the world, so he can help you navigate difficult people or situations no problem!
physical affection is a big win here. any kind of affection is actually. he's been craving a genuine emotional connection with someone since childhood. someone he doesn't have to pay to be around him, who just reaches out to hold his hand or stroke his cheek for no other reason than they love him and want to
no need to be worried about boundaries around him either, he looks like the kind of big guy who would surround you in a hug and never let go, so there's no need to worry about if you're hugging him too much, and a soft pat on the leg can never go amiss if you're trying to be subtle...
so this is where i think he is perfect, because of all the penguins, i think he's the least likely to be loud or to shout. he seems like he can get everything done in a quiet voice. he carries himself with an attitude that does the talking for him. and yeah there'll be conflict, but never between you and him, and he'd never involve you in any of it
ok cutesie stuff? the man has a lounge with penguins in it, i don't know how much cuter you can get. guarantee that he has a collection of penguin stuffies and penguin figurines that he collects because he thinks they're cute. and the pastel colours, specifically lilac, would be perfect because then you'd match him, but everyone would know you're his softer side, emblematic of his gentle nature that's often overlooked or hidden

Of all the fic ideas I never wrote and likely won't that I have the one I really wanted to wrote/moght actually do is the OBD AU were Edward is raised by his mother. Part of it is because all my other ideas have a way higher chance to be actually used by someoene else intencionally or not but this one is seems very unlikely to me at least.
But mostly is because Edward's mom was a characther that really stayed with me after reading One Bad Day. And just like everything on that comic not in a good way. There is just something about her absence. How Edward's abusive father is a real person, he is there on flasbacks and he gets a real actual chance to try to explain himself. We see him by Edward's eyes but also by his own. And in a sense the comic is amost apologetic towards him, like he might done it wrong but he really tried his best with the genius kid he loved or something, that it makes sense that Edward being the son of whore would make him more impure and evil and harder to love and I just have no words for how shitty this all is.
But it gets worse because this abusive asshole gets a voice, he gets a chance to explain his side of the narrative. But Edward's mother doesn't. Not to Edward and not to us. Riddler killed her. He was angry and empty and she slept with his henchman (wich the comic points out as if it matters somehow) and he killed her on first meeting and we don't even see her trying to explain. Edward's mother exists as a blood stain on the wall and a dead body for shock value close to bloodied picture of Marry holding baby Jesus because subetly is too hard and we need to let clear she is the mother from the start and add some religious symbolism even if it's sorta meaningless on these context and in the words of a neighboor that might or not have being her client. Her status as a woman, as a sex worker, as poor all appear to be reasons somewhat that this is fine, that her brutal murder was bound to happen, that while she doesn't deserve her fate she doesn't mean and never meant anything more than a bloodstain in wall anyway.
She has no friends. Or if she has they are never mentioned because her neighboor didn't knew about them and Batman doesn't think she has anything to add so he never digs further. She has no partner or at least none went to the police or visited her house and if they did everyone though they were a client. Her only familly killed her the moment they met. She is insignificant. And one of the first things the neighboor says about her is: "saw her spoting a bruise on her cheek on the form of a cop badge" and "no one can save these pepple" and after he compliments her says her clients had taste and that she was nice and babysat his cat. But the bitter taste is already there and the fact that the neighboor didn't include himself on "these people" shows what he was talking about. Her brutal murder was inevitable. The cops woudn't help. Batman wouldn't notice because she didn't matter. Not even for him.
Edward's mother doesn't matter. She might be the cataclism for his change but even in that she has the same value of an inanimate object. Edward appears, screams with her, doesn't let her explain and just kills her. She has no voice. She has no importance. She doesn't matter even for the only thing she does. And it really angers me. It angers me that his dad got a scene that he deserved a moment. It angers me how misoginistic and anti sex work her treatment is but also how devoid of nothing. How a characther that could have changed the game means nothing because potential is irrelevant.
And between that and the idea that an Eddie that was raised by his mother not only might be closer to cannon Riddler in loving puzzles and riddles and not being the most over the top edgylord to ever edgy but instead follow my idea of a Riddler that learns to be unapologitically himself out of spite (this time a thing he learned copying his mother) this really makes me want to write it.

What comics are you currently reading / what are your favourite comics that you’ve read recently?
god like the only thing I'm reading rn is comics from the 90s sorry about that. I really did mean to keep up with G. Willow Wilson's extended Poison Ivy run I swear.
Batman #445-448 was just a real solid little stretch finally teeing our boy Timmy up to make his big debut as Robin after paling around with Bruce for months; I really liked that. shame that he immediately skips town afterward to go fuck around in France with Lady Shiva, but nobody's perfect.
I recently wrapped the original Huntress run by Joey Cavalieri and like. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. there's a lot of really messy stuff re: pretty uncritically echoing the rhetoric of the war on drugs that pretty much Every Comic published at this time was doing but fuck if I was not entertained, and it really gave me a better appreciation for the character than I can say I've ever had. I mostly read it as prep for Birds of Prey but I'm glad I did!
the most recent thing I've read and liked was actually the Clayface issue of One Bad Day, a series that's been duds almost all the way down but managed to strike gold seemingly by accident with Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing. it's a tight story, an interesting adventure for the character, and REALLY narratively dynamic. great one-off, probably the only OBD I can wholeheartedly just recommend for the story.
also I know this isn't *recent* recent but I've been thinking about Cliff Chiang's Catwoman: Lonely City again and like. goddamn it's good.
listen I know I should read some things published, like, this century but I'm having so much fun ignoring every current creative decision Detective Comics Comics is making.

Autel IM608 Program Key for BMW CAS4 CAS4+ via OBD
Autel MaxiIM IM608 II can program BMW CAS4 and CAS4+ keys using OBD, without needing to open the ECU box. Remember, a network connection is essential during the whole process.
For instance, let’s consider BMW F30 key programming:
Important Notes:
For CAS4, the procedure for adding a key in case of all keys lost remains the same; ISN retrieval is unnecessary.
For CAS4+ all key lost scenarios, attempt to read the Engine ISN code under ISN code management. If this is not supported, explore alternative methods to acquire the ISN code.
The subsequent steps are identical to adding a key. To determine the CAS system type, access “ECU information.”

Ok I have now read the OBD Riddler comic, and I now understand the full context behind Riddler playing basketball during his final confrontation.
My takeaway from it overall is... there have been instances in my life where I made a reference to Dead Poet's Society, not even really talking about it as the subject of the conversation, and some guy who is 10-20 years older than me (probably saw it in theaters and remembers original reactions whatever they were) goes off on a brief but unexpectedly intense rant about it.
This was Tom King's out of nowhere Dead Poet's Society rant.
That is my theory.
O.O
THIS MAKES A DISTURBING AMOUNT OF SENSE
