Front man, Brian Aubert, and bassist, Nikki Monninger, of alt rock band, Silversun Pickups, join us again on this episode of The Adamantium Podcast. We discuss their latest album, Physical Thrills, Nikki’s first solo vocal single, and their flourishing relationship with all star producer, Butch Vig. We also talk about their initial meeting on an airplane to London, their upcoming 20th anniversary of their debut album, Carnavas, working with Joaquin Phoenix as director on one of their early music videos, covering Joe Jackson’s “I’m The Man” for Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer, the infamous Virgin Music Fesitval in Toronto where Noel Gallagher got tackled on stage, hanging with Dave Grohl, and our favourite Hayao Miyazaki films & Hideo Kojima video games.

..:: #99. Silversun Pickups - Freakazoid ::..
If one were looking to find a band to carry the torch of alt rock confidently through the '00s and '10s, Silversun Pickups would be a pretty solid choice. They're five albums in and showing no sign of losing the ability to deliver unique and compelling compositions. (In fact, they've previously landed on WEIT?'s list in 2009, 2012, and 2015.) The most powerful moment on Widow's Weeds finds frontman Brian Aubert admitting his faults while desperately trying to keep something together. Is it a relationship? Or perhaps society in general? While we may never know, Nikki Monninger's introspective bassline mingles forlornly with the rest of the band through a dark orchestral journey.
Best Moment: At 3:10 when Brian's voice casts out defiantly into the night and summons an army of strings to follow in his wake.

Silversun Pickups Return to NYC for a Pair of Shows at Brooklyn Steel
Making atmospheric rock out of the Silver Lake neighborhood in L.A., Silversun Pickups were mainly just local heroes until their second full-length, Swoon (stream it here), out in 2009, shot the band—Brian Aubert (vocals and guitar), Nikki Monninger (bass and vocals), Chris Guanlao (drums) and Joe Lester (keys)—into the mainstream and onto bigger stages. “With Swoon, Silversun Pickups continue to explore their ’90s rock sound, while further embracing their pop sensibilities,” says Sputnik Music. “Swoon is an impressive record from an impressive up-and-coming band. It’s intimate, accessible and—Pumpkins comparisons aside—fairly unique in today’s scene. What more could one ask for?” Last June, the quartet returned with their fifth LP, the Butch Vig–produced Widow’s Weeds (stream it here). “The album profits mightily from the veteran producer’s ability to transition established acts into more mature, self-assured iterations of themselves, without scrapping the essence of what made those bands great in the first place,” raves Slant Magazine. “From its opening notes, the album presents a band brimming with reclaimed confidence and vitality, one that need no longer take refuge behind endless waves of feedback and sonic distractions.” Currently crisscrossing their way across America in support of their new tunes, Silversun Pickups come to Brooklyn Steel this week for a pair of shows on Thursday and Friday (which is already sold out). San Diego rock outfit the New Regime open both nights.
