Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh, known commonly as Mother Mushroom, will meet her children and mother who are waiting for her in the US, according to the AFP. Officials did not give a reason for her release, though it comes while US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is on a visit to the country, leading to speculation that the move was a good-will gesture.
Quynh is a blogger of environmental and social issues who was jailed in June 2017 on the charge of conducting propaganda against the state. Her involvement with the protests against the Taiwanese Formosa Ha Tinh Steel plant, which was tied to a massive fish die-off in 2016, especially angered the Vietnamese authorities.
She developed the pen name Mother Mushroom because of her daughter’s nickname “Nam” (mushroom). She began her popular blog in 2006 after visiting a hospital and seeing many desperate patients waiting for care, but being refused because they did not have the money to bribe hospital officials.
Quynh was first arrested in 2009 for blogging about land confiscations for a Chinese-backed bauxite mine, and was released nine days later after promising to close her blog.
She was arrested again on 10 October 2016 after trying to visit an imprisoned political activist in the central Vietnamese province of Khanh Hoa under Article 88 of the Penal Code, which prohibits conducting propaganda against the state.
“Article 88 effectively makes it a crime for any Vietnamese citizen to enjoy the fundamental freedom to express an opinion, to discuss or to question the government and its policies,” said Zeid Ra’ad al Hussein, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights at the time.
“The overly broad, ill-defined scope of this law makes it all too easy to quash any kind of dissenting views and to arbitrarily detain individuals who dare to criticise government policies,” he added.
Her arrest drew international ire for the lengthy sentence, especially from the US and the European Union. Before being handed a decade in prison, she had already spent nine months in pre-trial detention. While in jail she reportedly held multiple hunger strikes, the most recent held in protest of being kept in a cell with a “hostile and threatening cellmate,” AFP reported her mother as saying.
In March 2017 she was award the International Women of Courage Award by US First Lady Melania Trump. She was also named civil rights defender of the year in 2015 by Civil Rights Defenders, an advocacy group based in Stockholm.

Write For Rights - Your Letter Makes a Difference
"I want to thank you all on behalf of the Istanbul 10 for your efforts for our release. I am deeply, deeply grateful. If it wasn't for your efforts, we wouldn't be here today. Thank you, thank you, thank you." -Idil Eser, Write for Rights 2017
Idil Eser, the Director of Amnesty International Turkey, and 9 other activists–known as the Istanbul 10, were a case in the 2017 Write for Rights. They were arrested in Turkey on July 5th, 2017 while Amnesty International Turkey’s Chair, Taner Kılıç, was arrested a month earlier. They are all now free.
"It's not just freedom for myself and my family. It will be for all Vietnamese."
On October 17th, 2018 Me Nam (Mother Mushroom) was released from prison in Vietnam. Her case was in this year’s Write for Rights! Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh, also known by her blogging pseudonym, Me Nam (Mother Mushroom) was arrested on 10 October 2016 and held incommunicado until 20 June 2017. On 29 June 2017, she was handed a ten-year prison sentence, having been convicted of “conducting propaganda against the State of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam” under Article 88 of Viet Nam’s Penal Code.
“To everyone who sent me countless letters from around the world I want to express my deep gratitude. While in prison, these actions lifted my spirit.” - Taner Kılıç, Write for Rights 2017
Taner Kılıç is the chair of Amnesty International Turkey and was arrested in Turkey in 2017. He spent over a year in prison for his peaceful human rights activism. He is now free and reunited with his family.
"International support is the most powerful tool that women like me can get. Every single signature for the petition to get me free, made a difference. Now I'm free. I'm no fairy tale, I am a true story." -Teodora Vasquez, Write for Rights 2016
Teodora Vasquez hugs her family and friends shortly after being released from the women’s Readaptation Center, in Ilopango, El Salvador on February 15, 2018, where she was serving a sentence since 2008, handed down under draconian anti-abortion laws after suffering a miscarriage.
“I am very honored to be among the cases that you have selected for your Write for Rights campaign. I am honored to know people like you who denounce the injustices committed by the authorities and governments. You have brought joy into my heart. Thank you.” - Mahadine, Write for Rights 2017
Mahadine, an online activist in Chad, was released on April 5th, 2018 after spending more than 18 months in prison on fabricated charges. He had been facing a life sentence for a Facebook post critical of the government.
“Receiving your letters really comforted me when I was in prison. Thank you!” - Muhammad Bekzhanov, Write for Rights 2015
Muhammad Bekzhanov, a journalist in Uzbekistan, languished in jail for 17 long years until his release in 2017. His prison sentence was handed down after an unfair trial and severe torture, and arbitrarily extended by the authorities for Bekzhanov’s political activism. At the time of his release, Bekzhanov was one of the world’s longest prison-held journalists.
“Thank you very much each and every one of you. Not just for campaigning for my release, and the release of other prisoners, but for helping to keep our hope and our beliefs alive.” -Phyoe Phyoe Aung, Write for Rights 2015
Phyoe Phyoe Aung is a human rights defender and Secretary General of one of Myanmar’s largest student unions. On March 10, 2015, she and 50 other students were arrested by police for their peaceful demonstrations against an education law they believe limits freedom of education. Phyoe Phyoe Aung faced up to nine years’ imprisonment and was a prisoner of conscience. She was freed on April 8, 2016.
“I am happy to finally be free after more than 17 months of imprisonment. I thank Amnesty International and all those who fought in one way or another for my release. I look forward to seeing my family and friends to continue the fight for democracy and freedom in my country.” -Fred Bauma, Write for Rights 2015
Fred Bauma and Yves Makwambala are human rights defenders in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They were imprisoned for their peaceful human rights activism and were considered prisoners of conscience. They were freed on August 30, 2016
“I feel joy, and so much emotion. To everyone who has stood by me, I give my heartfelt thanks. Without this support, my freedom would have been almost impossible. I want to thank you and to urge you to continue your efforts, don’t stop the beautiful work you are doing for the human rights of others. Sometimes justice is delayed, but it comes.” -Yecenia Armenta Graciano, Write for Rights 2015
In July 2012, Yecenia Armenta was taken into police custody in Mexico and brutally tortured. The police beat her for hours, raped her and threatened to kill her children. In spite of independent medical evidence that torture took place, the ‘confession’ was used to charge Yecenia with no proof at all. She was released in 2016.
"I’d like to thank our friends at Amnesty International and Amnesty USA for their remarkable support these last years, culminating just recently in the Write for Rights Campaign." - Albert Woodfox, Write for Rights 2015
On his 69th birthday, February 19, 2016, he walked free – 44 years after he was first put into solitary confinement in Louisiana. He was the USA’s longest serving prisoner held in isolation. Nearly every day for more than half of his life, Albert Woodfox woke up in a cell the size of a parking space, surrounded by concrete and steel. For the first time in more than four decades, Albert Woodfox is now able to walk outside and look up into the sky.
“I am alive today, after 33 arrests (it's now far more), because members of Amnesty International spoke out for me." -Jenni Williams, Write for Rights 2011
Activist Jenni Williams, is a founder of the social justice movement Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA), who has endured dozens of arrests and beatings for leading peaceful protests. In 2003, Williams co-founded WOZA with the late Sheba Dube to demand social and political reforms in Zimbabwe under the brutal rule of Robert Mugabe. WOZA has inspired tens of thousands of women and men to stand up for their rights to free speech and assembly and the fulfillment of basic needs like food and education. WOZA is both the protest group’s acronym and a word in the Ndebele language that means “come forward.

The front cover on this photobook has an image which wraps around the spine of the book. I think this could be an interesting concept to explore? I could use a close up image of my coptic binding which I could align with the spine of my book, so that the photograph of the expose spine sits over the actual spine.
Once again, this photobook artist has use consistent white space throughout their book with uniform margins, evenly spaced. I particularly like the last spread where the image on the right hand side bleeds onto the left page. This spread is well balanced.  https://www.behance.net/gallery/110520977/PHOTOBOOK?tracking_source=search_projects_recommended%7Cphoto%20book

The high-profile Vietnamese dissident and writer known as Mother Mushroom has arrived in the US with her children and mother after being released from jail.
Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh left Vietnam on Wednesday to fly to Houston, Texas, immediately after her early morning release.
In 2017, she was sentenced to 10 years in jail for distributing propaganda against the state.
Vietnam's one-party communist regime frequently jails its critics.
Arriving at Houston airport, she told a crowd of supporters she would "never keep silent" in her fight for democracy in Vietnam.

The rippling waves of damage done by one of Vietnam’s worst environmental disasters in history continues to claim its victims as a 22-year-old blogger who initially reported on the Formosa factory spill back in 2016 has received a seven-year prison sentence for a charge of “conducting propaganda against the state”.
Nguyen Van Hoa was found guilty on Monday of spreading anti-state propaganda. The People’s Court of Ha Tinh Province said in a statement on their website that the young activist and blogger, who has previously reported for Radio Free Asia, had used video and written content as a call to arms to incite the people of Vietnam in what came to be an unprecedented show of protest following the spill.
The Taiwanese-run factory, owned by the Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Corporation, devastated nearly 200km of Vietnam’s coast in April 2016 after a spill of the factory’s toxic waste was found to be releasing cyanide and other harmful chemicals into the environment.
Reports found that 150 tons of aquatic life died as a result of the spill, which led to fishermen and people working within the tourism industry to be deprived of a livelihood for months. There have also been reports of people residing within the area getting sick from illnesses thought to be caused by the toxins released.
This disaster sparked a rarely seen wave of protests in a communist country that has, in recent months, been tightening up on the measures they use to punish critics of the government.
Bloggers, such as Hoa, are just one of many who have come to be victims of the government’s crackdown, which has begun reaching past traditional media outlets and into the realm of social media where critics, specifically bloggers, have been flocking to voice their opposition against the government.
In June, Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh, otherwise known to her Vietnamese-blogging followers as ‘Mother Mushroom’, was sentenced to ten years in prison under a similar charge of blogging about the environmental damage.
In a quote to the New York Times, Phil Robertson, the director of the Asia division at Human Rights Watch, said that this verdict for Hoa clearly shows “how profoundly the government’s paranoid desire to maintain political controls trumps notions of justice and human rights”.
“How else can one explain that executives of an international firm that poisoned the ocean, ruining the coastal economy in four provinces, are free to go about their business while this idealistic young journalist is heading to prison for helping expose their misdeeds?” he added.
The Formosa spill has proven to be a delicate issue for the Vietnamese government, more specifically because it concerns one of the main drivers of their economy – foreign investment – and also because it must balance these interests with environmental regulation and the overall politically stability of the country.
For this reason, the government has been criticised by the international community for what they view as giving a lighter sentence to the company responsible for the spill. Formosa was ordered by the Vietnamese government to pay $500m for the damage done and on their end face no jail time.
Despite the criticism, the government shows no sign in backing down on critics. They have said they will continue to prosecute demonstrators who were in attendance at the protests back in 2016, saying they will be charged with “causing public disorder”.
Reporters Without Borders gave a statement from their Asia-Pacific desk, saying that the ruling was “totally disproportionate”.
“Not even his family was warned that this trial was going to take place. Such drastic action confirms the intransigence of Vietnam’s refusal to tolerate any reporting freedom. Vietnam’s commercial partners should draw the appropriate conclusions,” said Daniel Bastard, the Asia-Pacific representative.
Amnesty International currently ranks Vietnam as standing 175th out of 180 countries in their Freedom of the Press Index, using the fact that there are currently 84 prisoners in Vietnam who have been sentenced under charges of holding political or religious views that are against the state as part of their evidence.
