My Americana composition “Steinbeck Found the Valley” was prompted by lyrics from The Beach Boys's "California Saga": "Have you ever been down Salinas way where Steinbeck found the valley, and he wrote about the way it was, and his travelings with Charley..." The music bed was inspired by “Trombone Dixie,” an obscure Brian Wilson instrumental (a PET SOUNDS outtake). On this track I played accordion and piano with cellist Kim Osterwalder (who also gigged w/mutual friends Buddy & Julie Miller) + trombonist Richard Marriott.

Butch lesbian trailblazer Nancy Valverde, dies at 92

Chicana lesbian, activist and gender-nonconformist Nancy Valverde died at her Los Angeles home on Monday. She was 92.

In the 1950s, Valverde was was routinely arrested for violating L.A.’s ‘masquerading’ laws.

These laws were commonly used by law enforcement to to target drag queens, transgender people and butch lesbians.

She was detained multiple times at Lincoln Heights jail in a section known as the Daddy Tank.

The Daddy Tank was a private wing where transgender men and butch lesbians were held

However, at the age of 17 she was credited with helping overturn masquerading laws.

During one stint in jail,  Valverde enlisted the help of a clerk at the L.A. County Law Library to search for rulings that showed wearing men’s clothing was a crime.

After proving that it was legally not a crime, Valverde was never arrested again.

Valverde went on to start her own Barber shop and lived with the same woman for 25 years, raising four children together.

“Valverde, an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, was celebrated as a beacon of light and a relentless advocate for equality and justice,” the Los Angeles LGBT Center said in a statement.

“Valverde’s journey as an activist began at the age of 17 when she bravely confronted the systems of prejudice in Los Angeles by unapologetically embracing her authentic identity. A fixture in L.A.’s queer community since the 1950s, she faced routine harassment and arrest by police for wearing men’s clothing in public. Arrested dozens of times under the city ordinance of “masquerading,” which targeted individuals for clothing associated with a different gender, Valverde remained steadfast in her refusal to conform.”

“They wanted me to be someone else,” she recounted in the PBS documentary L.A.: A Queer History.

“I could not be someone else. This is me.”

“Despite the challenges, Valverde became a respected figure in Los Angeles. She built connections within her local community and provided haircuts at her barbershop. Affectionately known as “Nancy from East Side Clover,” she left an indelible mark on the city.”

“Valverde’s legacy continued as she joined the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Senior Services department upon moving to Triangle Square, the nation’s first LGBTQ+-friendly affordable housing for older adults.

“Last year, the city honored her with the designation of “Cooper Do-nuts/Nancy Valverde Square” at the intersection of 2nd St. and Main St. in downtown Los Angeles.

“Cooper Do-nuts, a safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals in the 1950s, was the site of one of the earliest LGBTQ+ uprisings in the country.”

Sunday Edition: Women in Academia

This week’s Sunday Edition we are looking at women in higher education, especially the ways in which women in higher education have been viewed as transgressive. On display in Azariah’s Cafe, we have Keep the Damned Women Out by Nancy Weiss Malkiel which traces the tumultuous history of the process of making elite colleges and universities in Britain and America co-ed. Following similar themes, Gina Barreca’s Babes in Boyland is a personal story of Barreca’s experience as one of the first females to attend Dartmouth College after it became a co-ed Ivy League in 1972. On display is also Women in Higher Education: Changes and Challenges by Lynne B. Welch which forms a collection of 26 essays with the latest research on what the title proposes. Katherine Grace Hendrix’ Neither White Nor Male explores the experiences of female professors of color and the ways in which academia can be more inclusive. Kieu Linh Caroline Valverde and Wei Ming Dariotis write of the particular ways in which Asian American women in academia are marginalized in the book Fight the Tower: Asian American Women Scholars' Resistance and Renewal in the Academy. Finally, on display is Becky Ropers-Huilman’s book Gendered Futures in Higher Education which examines various gender issues in higher education then suggests needed changes through critical perspectives. All of these books are available to be checked out! While Oberlin College was the first co-educational college in the United States, it is still important that we all find ways, whether they be small or large, to be more inclusive of all identities in higher education. Presentación de la biografía más íntima de Rocío con grandes ausencias

Se ha presentado una biografía que habla de la vida de Rocío Jurado en la intimidad, es decir, de como era con su familia y sus amigos.

A pesar de que había una gran expectación para ver los familiares que acudían, el único que acudía a la presentación del libro de Marina Bernal era su viudo, José Ortega Cano.

Ninguno de esos tres hijos, Rociíto, José Fernando y Gloria Camila, acudieron a la presentación, así como tampoco fueron sus dos hermanos, Gloria y Amador.

Esto nos llama poderosamente la atención porque, por ejemplo, Gloria Camila sí estaba confirmada, pero su padre argumentaba que es que estaba con un resfriado muy grande y no podía acudir.

No obstante, en la presentación de este libro estuvieron grandes amigos de la cantante como Isabel Gemio o Máximo Valverde.

Cuando el pasado otoño Regina de Miguel preparaba Aura Nera, su contribución a la Xarxa Zande en forma de instalación-laboratorio y performance sonora, se alojó en mi casa. Hablamos sobre la memoria, y le pasé el libro que acababa de leer: Sortilegios de la memoria y el olvido, de Hugo Francisco Bauzá. Por esos días también estuvo por Barcelona Nancy Guzmán, una periodista de investigación chilena incansable en su labor de desclasificación y denuncia de los secretos de la DINA y de contextualización en un sistema político e histórico. Regina colaboró en dos de las charlas que dió Nancy presentando su libro más reciente publicado en la editorial Ceibo,“El Fanta, historia de una traición, y retomando dos de los anteriores: Los Agustines, o la conspiración permanente del clan Edwards, y Ingrid Olderock, la mujer de los perros. Una de ellas tuvo lugar en Casa América y la otra en La caníbal. En esos días, visitando la librería, Amanda recomendó a Regina Desenterrar las palabras de Clara Valverde. Su exposición fue inaugurada, la performance hecha acto, sin que yo todavía tuviera esta cuarta librología y el texto que la acompaña. Pasaron semanas, llegó el invierno, pasó el solsticio, la expo fue desmontada, leí el anuncio de que Regina había obtenido una residencia de investigación del MNCARS con el proyecto Contar la historia desde abajo, cito de la web del MNCARS: “Esta propuesta se plantea trabajar el desajuste sintomático entre el consumo y la producción contemporánea de imágenes y los procesos tecnológicos que las genera, en contraste con el aumento de personas sin representación, sinderechos y desaparecidas en procesos de conflicto bélico, así como la dificultad en la representación del trauma derivado de la violencia política del siglo XX en España.” Los días comenzaron a alargarse y hacia el final del invierno Regina me hizo llegar en agradecimiento por hospedarla dos de las probetas negras como la materia oscura de la instalación Aura Nera . No fue hasta el inicio de la primavera que pude encontrar el momento de juntar unos libros y ponerles un nombre: La ira de Deméter, que es el periodo en el que Deméter-Ceres, cuya hija Proserpina-Perséfone ha sido secuestrada, llevada bajo tierra y desaparecida por Plutón- Hades, pues Deméter-Ceres, tras buscarla por todos los rincones del mundo, desahoga su sentimiento y detiene el curso de las estaciones y la vegetación, cancela la primavera. La primavera y la flor, necesaria para el fruto, sólo volverá cuando Proserpina-Perséfone sea devuelta por quien se la llevó. Esto fue hace diez días; en los últimos tres he visto por partes una película chilena de la que Regina me habla hace años y que la hizo cruzar el mundo hasta el desierto de Atacama: Nostalgia de la luz, de Patricio Guzmán. Hacia el final he llorado; hace tiempo que no lloraba viendo una película.

En esta librología mostramos entre otros, libros que atestiguan exhumaciones de fosas comunes, estudios sobre la psicología social de estos procesos, novelas-memoria y ensayos con la memoria histórica y siempre personal también. Interpelaciones feministas a la ciencia y a la crítica de la imagen, reivindicaciones ecofeministas frente a la violencia extractiva de las corporaciones y la violencia de la desaparición de mujeres y el feminicidio. This Bicultural Couples Maternity Shoot Is A Beautiful Blend Of Their Cultures

Ever since they got married, Sherine and Alessandro Valverde have done their best to blend Sherine’s Indian heritage with Alessandro’s Hispanic heritage. Now that the San Antonio couple is preparing to have their first child, they’re determined to teach their son to embrace both of his cultures ― and they’re preparing these lessons while he’s still in the womb. 

The Valverdes strove to celebrate what they call their “IndiSpanic” culture during a maternity shoot in January at Harry Myers Park in Rockwall, Texas. 

During the first part of the shoot, Sherine was resplendent in a vibrant and heavily embellished red sari. The couple held tiny red juttis, traditional Indian shoes.

For the second half of the shoot, Sherine said she wanted to represent her husband’s Hispanic culture. She wore a flower in her hair and a green floral print dress, while Alessandro wore a white, half-sleeved shirt. Sherine hoped the elements gave off “more of a tropical feel.”

“My vision for the shoot was to accurately represent who we were, and what was important to us with our new and growing family,” Sherine told HuffPost in an email.

The couple has long attempted to immerse themselves in each others’ cultures, Sherine said. She compared their married life together to the fusion food “chicken tikka tacos” ― “two unique styles of culinary art meld together so flawlessly to create something entirely set apart,” she wrote.

Their wedding featured music from a Mexican mariachi band and a performer playing the Indian dhol, a traditional barrel-shaped drum. Sherine, a physician, said she practices Spanish at work with her patients and has a Latino radio station preset in her car. Meanwhile, Alessandro is learning Malayalam, an Indian language, from Sherine’s parents. Her family is also introducing him to the wide range of food that is particular to the southern Indian state of Kerala, where they’re from.

“We often find our conversations laced with spurts of Malayalam, Spanish and English, in essence creating our own unique culture,” Sherine said. “That was what I wanted these pictures to convey, the NEW culture we had created.”

The Valverdes wanted their maternity shoot to reflect both of their cultures. 

The Valverdes also plan to give their son a traditional Indian first name, to complement his father’s Hispanic last name. 

“We want our child to identify equally with both of his cultures, and be seen by those around [him] as Indian and Hispanic, dare I say ‘IndiSpanic,’” she wrote. “Ensuring that his name reflects that allows us as parents to some degree communicate this desire to the world around us.”

According to Nancy George, the couple’s photographer, one of the trickier parts of the shoot was working with Sherine’s red sari ― making sure it was draped correctly and flattered her belly.

George said she believed Sherine’s vision illustrated the beauty of bringing two separate cultures together. 

“Our cultural identity is something that’s hard for children to grasp and understand at times,” George told HuffPost. “I think it’s wonderful that mothers out there are trying to teach their children about their cultural background even from within the womb.”

The couple are expecting a baby boy in April 2018.

The Valverdes expect to welcome their baby in April. Sherine hopes that when their child is old enough to reflect on these photos, he’ll see his parents’ love shining through. 

“I truly hope that he appreciates ― beyond the shiny fancy jewelry his Mom spent way too much time picking out, the cool hipster glasses his Dad had cleaned meticulously the night before ― there was a simple man and women who could not be happier to meet their cherished baby boy,” she said.

Monarchs: Brown and Native Contemporary Artists in the Path of the Butterfly takes the migration path of the Monarch butterfly, as a geographic range and a metaphor. The butterfly crosses the border of the United States at its junctions with Canada at the north and Mexico in the south along the entire length of both of these conceptual divides. Bypassing the hotter, desert regions of the country, Monarchs flock along its western and eastern coastal edges, but the busiest path of the orange-and-black butterfly is through the center of the United States. The Monarch travels through Midwestern states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois, across the Great Plains of Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma, onwards through the Texas Hill Country all the way to the state of Michoacan in Mexico. The path of the butterfly also connects the site of the Dakota Access Pipeline where it crosses the Missouri River at the border of the Standing Rock nation to the U.S.-Mexico border, but the butterfly itself is indifferent to these artificial borders and conceptual divisions.

The exhibition Monarchs sees the defense of Standing Rock and the threat to build a border wall as continuous issues that pose challenges to people native to the Americas who have been separated by conceptual categories of indigenous, immigrant, and assimilated. Like the butterfly, which takes four generations to make the complete migratory path navigating its way through the center of the United States by drawing from inherited knowledge, these artists also pull from ancestral and cultural memory to reveal the deep conceptual legacies underpinning abstraction, reorient historical and art historical narratives, and explore centuries-old trade routes that moved aesthetics in addition to goods. Monarchs considers how objects, still and moving images, sound, and performances made by artists living in the path of the butterfly reveal their identities through form, process, and materiality rather than through content. To create the exhibition, Bemis Curator-in-Residence Risa Puleo looked to the butterfly for inspiration for the exhibition’s primary themes:

Migrations: The length of the Monarch’s migratory path is over 3,000 miles long, and unlike any other butterfly, the Monarch makes this path twice. The butterflies cross two international borders and dozens of states. Rodrigo Valenzuela explores the landscape of migration along the U.S.-Mexico border while Sky Hopinka, Francisco Souto, and Wendy Red Star employ road trips as their means of moving across the United States. Other types of movement including immigration to displacement, itinerancy, nomadism, and also the condition of being immobilized are explored by William Cordova, Gonzalo Reyes Rodriguez, Marty Two Bulls Jr., and Cannupa Hanska Luger. Nancy Friedemann-Sánchez and Harold Mendez examine how objects were moved across centuries-old trade routes, bringing aesthetics and styles with them across vast expanses of space.

Inheritance: No one butterfly completes the trek from the U.S.-Canada border across the U.S. to the butterfly forests of Michoacán, where individual butterflies often return to the same Oyamel Fir tree as their ancestors. They do so by drawing from knowledge inherited from butterflies who forged the path before them. Artists in Monarchs also pull from ancestral and cultural memory speaking to an inherited means of production and genealogy of form. Truman Lowe transforms the basket weaving techniques taught to him by his parents while Margarita Cabrera learned the craft of copper hammering of Santa Clara del Cobre, a town in Michoacán. Ronny Quevedo, Rafa Esparza, and Carlos Rosales-Silva incorporate building materials such as drywall, adobe, and plaster respectively into their paintings as an homage to constructing buildings and working-class labor.

Transformation: Over the course of its life, the Monarch butterfly takes on radically different forms, transforming from egg to caterpillar, chrysalis, and, finally, butterfly. Artists like Jeffery Gibson, Mary Valverde, Donna Huanca, and Ivan LOZANO explore how costume and textiles join forces with performance to form the basis of sacred ritual and ceremony that provide passageways to the spiritual.

Monarchs: Brown and Native Contemporary Artists in the Path of the Butterfly is curated by Risa Puleo, 2017 Bemis Center Curator-in-Residence.
