In the very first comic I did, Radi says she works for redemption. As I've gone through this comic, I realized that's not exactly true. Redemption is not the word for what this fate is...

Someone recently asked for refs of SGFM Radiance so I figured I'll put them here! I doodle characters when I'm planning a story but not in the headspace to write, so I have lots of messy sketches stored away. I might share em eventually
Tumblr media
(Her, a la mortal moth. Slightly too rounded in the shoulders but that was an oversight. Also, some doodles with and without her crown: )

Btw Radi having a "blinding sun" motif is so real but what about PK moon motif, we gotta get more crazy about how they play off eachother
The moon is objectively adored more than the sun, more alluring than the sun. The moon unlike the sun is able to be stared at, watched and loved, it's so tangible and physical and close, its mortal
The sun is far, it's too bright, it's a violent heat, untouchable, unreasonable, unloving. The sun incinerates all that comes near and will kill earth along with itself in the end! But the sun doesn't do it on purpose it's in its nature, it's how it lives
The sun is necessary for all life, it's not even an necessary evil, it's simply necessary but people HATE IT they hate its heat and its light and its overbearing presence and so they turn to the moon, to the night, where everything is so dark, and the moons light is so bright compared to that darkness...
So so real man, the moon reflects the suns light, it's so pale and luminous and perfect BUT ITS NOT ITS LIGHT grrgrrgrr DO YOU GUYS SEE WHAT I MEAN THIS IS DRIVING ME UP THE WALLGRRRAAAH

Till Death Do Us Part
Tumblr media
TW: Death, blood, injury
Summary: Falling through the air I wonder how can this be fair
It does no good to dwell on the past. That was your motto, live in the  present, look forward to the future, but never turn back. And usually, you were pretty good about not reminiscing. Right up until you were rappelling down a mountain with Ghost. It was going just fine, and then there was a tearing sound, a sudden weightlessness, and an ear-piercing shriek you later realized was coming from your mouth. And as you fell, hurtling towards your imminent death, the event that gave you your call sign flashed through your mind.
The call sign Angel may sound cool, but anyone who had heard the story knew it was actually embarrassing. You had slipped while rappelling at boot camp and had fallen through the air, your hair sliding out of its bun and whipping around you. Somehow, someway, the timing was just right and you jerked to a stop in the perfect position, the sun shining behind you as you swang from your rope, giving you a halo. One of your squadmates said ‘you look like a falling angel’ and the name had stuck.
Guess I’m living up, well…dying to, my nickname. Is the last sadistic thought that crosses your brain before you hit the ground.
You made contact with the earth and for a moment you blacked out. When you open your eyes next, it is to a bloodied and bruised Ghost leaning over you. His mask is gone and his blonde hair is colored with blood. He mouths something, looking worried, but you can’t hear him over the ringing in your ears.
You push yourself up, body trembling. Surprisingly, you feel almost no pain as you sit up, just weakness as you lean against a broken wall. You look at the bone jutting out of your leg and grimace, but it's more for sight of it than the feel. There is a dull ache in your abdomen, and you know your legs are broken, but you can’t feel it. It is a strange experience.
Your vision finally clears all the way and you  look at the fallen rope, attached to you and Ghost, who is sitting next to you, and realize he too must have fallen.
"Is your radi-”
“No.” He cuts you off, voice rough, “It broke in the fall. We’re stranded.” He coughs, a little bit of blood dribbling down his lip. You frown, knowing that means his lung is punctured. You shift to face him and immediately regret it.
Pain is gradually making itself known in your body, every minute worse than the last. There is a burning, stabbing pain in your stomach that is slowly getting worse and you know what it means.
“We’re not making it out of here, are we?” You ask, voice raspy. He shakes his head in response, looking at the broken mask in his hands. You lean on him, his arm coming up around your shoulder.
“Are you scared?” You ask, eyes half-lidded. God why does your stomach hurt this much?
“I don’t like the unknown.” He admits, finally looking at you. You don’t respond, instead looking out at the ruined city you both were supposed to infiltrate. You laugh softly, which turns into a cough that burns and burns and burns. Blood splatters in the dirt and you grimace.
“What's so funny?” Ghost asks slowly. He pretends to ignore the fact that you are actively dying.
"The ruins of Finis Viae." You slur, curling further into him, "It means End of the Road in Latin. Fitting for the final resting place of a Ghost and an Angel."
“Someone should write that on our headstones.” Ghost mutters, resting his head on yours. You smile weakly, in too much pain to laugh.
“Who knew...dy-dying…hur-hurt so…bad.” You gasp softly. And God does it hurt. There is fire in your abdomen, burning its way through your body, filling your veins, setting every nerve a light with agony.
Ghost doesn’t respond, just grips you slightly tighter. Your head slides down to his chest, his heartbeat the only thing you can hear over the ringing in your ears.
You lay that way for hours, just The Agnel, The Ghost, and The End of The Road.
And, as for all things in this mortal world, your time runs out. Ghost can feel it, the moment your soul leaves your body. He panics for a brief second, not wanting to be there without you. But then his heart stutters, and he realizes he is going too.
“I….love…you.” His final words, carried by the wind through the ruins of a ghost town. He closes his eyes and slumps over you, locking you together in one final, tragic embrace.
“Get up silly.” You giggle, stretching a hand out to help him. The world is brighter, the dark no longer able to reach you. You grasp Ghost and haul him up, and the two of you stand, hand-in-hand, staring down at your uninhabited bodies.
"Are you ready to go?" You ask him, smiling.
Ghost hesitates for a moment, biting his lip.
"I am." He finally replies, unsure, but trusting you. He looks down at you, cupping your cheek with a ghostly hand.
"I was afraid I couldn't hold on to you." Ghost admits, his voice quieter than usual, “That you would leave me.”
“I would never go where you could not follow.” You say in response, covering his hand with your own.
"I'm scared." He spoke softly, letting the words hang in the air.
"Don't be." You say, smiling at him, "Death is but  the next great adventure."
"Who said that?" Ghost asks,teasing..
“What, you don’t think I could come up with that on my own?” You ask, mock offended. He raises his eyebrow and you laugh.
“Fine, fine, it was Dumbledore.”
“From Harry Potter?”
“I’m surprised you know that.”
“I read the books!”
“You can read?”
“Hey!” He shoves you and you laugh. It was strange. You feel like you should be sad that you are dead, but all you feel is…light, almost…warm.
"What comes after this part?" Ghost asks quietly, sobering up. You notice him looking around and you could sense his fear. He was used to being the leader, the soldier always following the orders, and now he was stepping into the unknown.
“I don’t know,” you grab his hand, “but I’ll be with you.”
"I don't like the unknown." Ghost says again. He felt out of place, like he didn't belong here. Death felt too peaceful, too nice after all he had gone through. He had hoped death was a little like his life but in this moment, the two felt nothing alike.
“I know.” You say gently. You squeeze his hand, looking up at him, “But I’ll be with you.” He smiles down at you, pressing a kiss to your head.
"C’mon, it'll be fun.” You say, grinning. You take one last look at your bodies, locked in an eternal embrace, as close in death as they were in life, and turn around. You tug Ghost behind you, smile at him one last time, and step into the light.

Wanderer's Journal (pt. 3)
Now, as is inevitable with me, I am compiling the info on the Higher Beings, starting with the Pale King.
Tumblr media
Here's the bit that states outright that PK was an accomplished civil engineer! I love that the Queen's Station apparently barely disturbed the environment too, likely out of deference to the White Lady. Additionally, the Queen's Station links the areas of Hallownest that allied with the King (Fog Canyon/Greenpath, the Fungal Wastes, Dirtmouth), which is a cool tidbit that I didn't notice until now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wyrm moment. It's fun to note that the White Palace as we find it in-game is not in this book, as a mortal would not have been able to enter. Very fun to learn that PK was once an 'unfathomably large' wyrm though (at least according to mortal bug standards!), and that it seems the dev notes on him gaining a gender after he transformed into his kingsbug form did stick around into canon, though of course that could just be because the narrator did not know that he hatched out of the wyrm (Bardoon does, and still uses it/its for the wyrm in-game, but that's not super important, I just think it's interesting worldbuilding).
We also see some of the Pale King's cowardice and willingness to omit the truth to get what he wants here, with him running from his sins and lying about what strips mind from bugs in the Wastelands. We know from Quirrel's comic that it's not him who does it, but if it keeps worshipers in without him having to resort to conflict? Jackpot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's WL, and a mention of Dryya + Radi's puppet. Kinda amusing how WL apparently has no problem with visitors, but then again if I were a very powerful root goddess then I likely wouldn't really care about passive intruders either.
Aaand here's Radi! I find it curious that the glyphs seem to be made by the Moth Tribe, yet are clearly soul totems when we see them in game- maybe they changed from Radiance's power to the Pale King's when they made their conversion? Because they're certainly from the Moths, given the winged nature and the fact that their language seemingly has been stricken from record- though I should note that Ellina cannot read the Pale King's writings, either. I also can't help but feel sorry for the Radiance here, longing to be remembered, even if she did go ham with the genocide in canon.
Tumblr media
And now the Grimm Troupe:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have nothing else to add. I just love how they're hanging out and having fun. Ellina doesn't seem at all afraid of them, so perhaps it's just Elderbug who dislikes them setting up shop in his quiet little town.

Is the White Lady a unique existence, or is there some sort of species that she is basically a divine exemplar of?
In the AU I imagine she's part of the pantheon of gods of the Hallownest area, alongside The Radiance, Grimm, Unn, as well as The Dream Lord (Grimm and Radi's father) and The Shade Lord, though those two are dead at this point in the timeline (well, The Shade Lord can technically be reborn as we saw with Ghost uniting the void, but it's a veeeery unlikely event, so I consider it dead dead). I also like the idea of there being other gods that either died or prefer to stay away from all The Gods' Plane drama, and simply watch over their domains in peace (perhaps they don't even have physical forms, which would explain why they were never seen).
Of course, there is some hierarchy between those gods - at their peak power, The Radiance and Grimm were the strongest (not counting their father and The Shade Lord), while Unn and The White Lady (perhaps her god name is root? And "The White Lady" is just a title) were much weaker. But after Grimm's banishment, and The Radiance's downfall and eventual death, I think they are somewhat even power wise now.
Since The Radiance and Grimm are connected to dreams and nightmares, what would WL and Unn be gods of? Well, for WL I think something like fertility would fit, considering her desire to breed. And Unn could be connected to nature and wilderness, perhaps she watches over the wildlife population to ensure they are at stable numbers and no manmade (bugmade?) extinction occurs. That could be interesting, especially seeing how closely related both of their domains and responsibilities are. A bit of rivalry that extends past the physical territory conflict would be very tasty.
But to get back to the point - WL is not a member of any species, she's a unique being just like the other gods. That's not to say she didn't have any ancestors, but I wouldn't consider that a species. They're too far removed from the mortals' biology for that to be entirely accurate. The White Lady FPK married was her physical form, and her godly form resides in her own realm. As a side note, I would love to design that form one day, sounds like a fun idea.
This is also another reason why FPK couldn't be considered a true god. He's a member of a species that isn't godly in nature, he doesn't have a godly form, he learned all of his powers and wasn't born with them. He also lacks many of the abilities the gods possess, such as free travel between the mortal and higher planes* (the ability Grimm was stripped of after being banished), the ability to control their fertility and to change shape of their higher form, among others. So next to all of the gods, he was always significantly weaker. But at the same time, what made him unfitting to sit among the pantheon, also made him more relatable to the mortals, which is how he was able to gain so many followers, and why the moth tribe ultimately decided to reject The Radiance in favor of FPK.
So in short. WL is considered a god in the AU. Not powerful enough to stop The Radiance's infection, sadly, but still one of the gods of Hallownest.
I hope this isn't too convoluted, I tried to simplify all the concepts from the game and my inspirations to the best of my ability. It's why i treat "higher being" and "god" as interchangeable, for the sake of convenience. Though the nature of god like creatures is that they're difficult to comprehend, and unfortunately I can relate to that feeling more often than not hahaha
---
* The "dream realm" he disappeared into was something his mind created at the moment he broke down, likely as a subconsciously manifested hiding place for safe hibernation. It used the same essence the gods use to travel between their own realms and the physical world, so it's very likely that he was in possession of a dream nail at the moment it happened. It is also why Grimm was unable to reach him, The Radiance took away his ability to travel between the shared plane and individual realms (with the exception of his own), so he was not able to enter the one FPK manifested
As for why WL did not attempt to visit him, there are two options that I'm debating on. Rither she was unaware of it/was made aware of it but was determined to stay in her bindings for the best of everyone, or FPK's manifested dream realm had some kind of seal that prevented anyone from entering it. I'm leaning more towards the second option (or a combination of both), but I still have to figure out how Ghost was able to enter. Perhaps being in possession of a dream nail helped? It condenses the essence into a small, focused form, so it's possible that was enough to break the seal (it would also tie nicely to the high essence requirement in the game). That, or perhaps the seal weakened over time, but at that point everyone gave up trying to reach him, until Ghost arrived. or maybe it was a bit of both.

Can NOT stop thinking about the Tyr and Fenrir correlation with Marius and Lyf (or at least my headcanoned versions of them? Mainly bc much of Lyf lore is very fanonized you know how it goes). Like they're very different pairs, but also the similarities make me go feral. So um. I'm gonna talk about it :) probably very rambly tho as i am very tired but emotional so sorry :)
Most of us at least know the story of Tyr and Fenrir, right? Right! (To summarize: Fenrir being big scary wolf guy the Aesir gods did not like!! Tyr was Aesir god but he did actually like Fenrir and they got a long decently!! Fenrir got too big and everyone wanted him locked away, and in the end to get that done Tyr broke his word and trust with Fenrir to help capture him, losing his right hand in the process. God I'm bad at compressing info.)
So listen... I headcanon Lyf to be part Jotun. Probably like, some Jotunheimr family and some Midgard family. Fenrir is either part Jotun or just completely Jotun (as he is a son to Loki and his giantess lover. Loki is often considered to be Jotun, not Aesir, despite his place amongst the gods. Sometimes he seems to be... Part Aesir and part Jotun? So theoretically Fenrir may not be fully Jotun).
Then look. Marius lost his right hand too. Sure he had his replaced but he still also lost he right hand.
Mix it together and what have you got! Well, not much. It's really just one random similarity each, plus the personalities of each so extremely different, what is there to draw on? Comparing a cold case inspector to a being of wild nature and chaos? And a morally corrupt pirate to a god of justice, war, and loyalty?
Well I have MORE actually!!! That cold case cop inspector has been blasted with eldritch radiative energy, mutating them and now they're absolutely feral!! They've got the instincts of a wild predatory animal emblazoned into them from Yog-Sothoth, encouraged by the crew of space pirates they travel with to spread their crawling chaos! That morally corrupt space pirate grew up war torn and now causes it, is ride or die loyal to his crew, and can be so often fueled by mmm less justice and more petty revenge.
Of course they're not the same! But the similarities are there!
Also for my final point. Picture the universe in which Marius gained Lyf's trust, the immortal crew adverse to connections mortals, and Lyf's walls high and strong. And yet, he does. So be it that in this universe, he's the one behind bars while Lyf is the one to bring him food. They bond. They connect. But Marius can't take Lyf with him. The crew wouldn't like it, won't let him. He can't take Lyf, and neither can he stay behind.
It should have been obvious, in hindsight. His right hand, his promising hand, had already been taken. That's why Fenrir wanted that hand from Tyr, if course. To take it as a symbol of a word broken. Marius's arm had been replaced, yes, but something damaged and repaired vs something new aren't the same. He wouldn't keep his word to Lyf. He breaks their trust, and leaves them behind to the fate determined for them before their birth. There was a moment in time when things could've been different, but it wasn't.
They aren't the same people. And yet the tale Lyf grew up knowing of Tyr and Fenrir happen again. Happens to them. The story repeats as they're abandoned.
Of course. It doesn't have to end like this. They aren't the same people. Maybe they find each other again. Maybe they can be run together. They don't have to leave the other behind. Something broken being fixed may not be the same as something new, but it's better than leaving it broken, isn't it? And maybe the repaired thing comes out better and stronger than the original.

so like I have the urge to share all my HK human AU headcanons
Hollow Knight human au things
One: Long hair means great loyalty, those with short hair aren’t as great as others
2: vessels can talk, they choose not to though
3: Pale King has albinism, hence why he has light skin and white hair
4: both Monomon and Quirrel are immigrants from a far away country
5: Hornets hair is really poofy because of her mothers hair
6: Radiance has a mortal form so she can walk around in the mortals
7: White Lady used to fight, but put her down her weapon when marrying the Pale King
8: Lost Kin was adopted by Oro (no evidence, let me have this)
9: Sheo and Nailsmith are married
10: Grey Mourner didn’t cut her hair so it’s long asf
11: Cloth, Quirrel, and Tiso are that one friend group where we have the happy, the smart, and the hot headed
12: Grimm and PK knew each other once
13: All vessels have the Kings brand either on their neck, back, arms or legs
14: Everyone is somewhat still like their bug counterparts
15: Ghosts elytra was glued shut, and Hollows was broken/shattered when stabbing itself
16: Hornet, Midwife, and Herrah all have extra arms
17: PK has a tail and dragon like legs and feet
18: Radiance actually cared for Hollow, motherly instincts for the poor child
19: Hollow only wanted to make sure Hallownest ended up okay in the end
20: Hollow and Quirrel were good friends
21: Radi and Shade Lord were good friends when they weren’t gods
22: Black Wyrm and PK are brothers
23: Markoth and Xero intended to help Hallownest but Radiance got to em
24: Hornet says Shaw because PK showed her a one of his 420 saw blades in still can’t pronounce it right
25: They speak another language not English, Team Cherry was just nice about it
26: Abyss tribe had there own language that no one could understand Moth tribe also
27: Monomon and Quirrel didn’t know how to speak this Hallownest language, thus why the Archives Lore tablets were messed up like that. And Radiance also doesn’t speak this Hallownest language, so she was like- yelling at the HK in a Radiance it doesn’t know-
edit: 28: THIS IS BASED OFF OF RADDEST LADDEST (I hope I spelled that right I didn’t want to @ you 😭) WHOLE POST ABOUT MONOMON IN THEIR PROSPERITY AU- but since Jellyfish have very long life spans in real life, Monomon will outlive almost everyone in present Hallownest, depression 👍
29: Hornet had also inherited PK’s albinism, so, she has silvery hair and light red eyes (mainly because Herrah has dark blue-black hair and black eyes.)

Part 1 of a comic I like to call "The Mourners". It's gonna be awhile before I can get part 2 up cause I'm working on a commission. I had this already made, so I figured I might as well share.
Originally each Mourners was going to get their own comic and in depth look at the lesson Radi learns from them. However, I don't have forever to work on this comic, so I've had to condense a lot of ideas into one. The most important, however, I feel should have its own comic to flesh itself out.

Do you ever think about. the fact that Radiance, the Light, the goddess of light herself, was upstaged by the Pale King. because his light was so much greater. and everyone flocked to him instead, and she was left behind and abandoned.
do you think about what she might've felt. the abandonment and betrayal she suffered, the revenge that she went lengths to achieve. would a higher being's grief be more powerful than mortal bugs, or do they grieve the same?
Well now I am
Time to ramble *cracks mental autism knuckles*
So!! I’ve always thought Radi to be more a goddess of dreams rather than light, and since I’ve already made goddesses for All Of It with my Kirby insanity (staring intently at the entire ykkan religion), she’d be more of a. Demigoddess rather than a full-on goddess. But she’s still wildly powerful.
I imagine that, with the context of my own story’s lore, Radi would be the daughter of one of the four Godsisters, specifically the Ykka of Dreams — like, in the Dream’s attempt to keep at least a part of herself alive, she threw out another being made of Dream matter to be her successor in her downfall.
Because she’s made of Dream matter, a type of matter associated with memories and emotions, her rage and grief would be felt by anyone physically close to her. Before she was contained in Holly, her own emotions would’ve been felt by all bugs throughout the entirety of Hallownest, and that’s what probably started the infection in this (VERY UNFINISHED) au. After her sealing though, it would mostly just be felt by Holly, since that’s where she is, but the already infected bugs would still be carrying that wrath.
And allll of that emotional-rage-grief stuff is exactly what killed Radi’s mother.
‘Tis a vicious cycle, the cycle of Godhood.
I also think PK would be the Soul’s attempt at salvation. As such, PK’s power would be equal to Radi’s if not even stronger considering the rarity of Soul Magic. And beings like the Soul are literally built to create new life, hence why all those types of beings are called Creator Entities, which means any creature birthed by the Soul would be of very high magical capabilities.
In Soul Journey, Soul Magic is incredibly powerful and incredibly rare — like, rare to the point that people thought it didn’t even exist anymore — so beings made with the sheer power of Soul Magic are bound to be almost on the same level as the Ykka of Soul. Not on exactly the same level, but almost. That amount of power is more than enough for someone to be worshipped.
Sure, Dream Magic is powerful — the ability to have complete control over one’s mind, to achieve mental Godhood, is unlike any other. But to naturally wield Soul Magic is to have complete control over the very thing that keeps living beings alive. To have control over how someone feels and acts, when they die, when they’re born, what they truly are to begin with. That type of power is absolutely insane, and is to be both feared and worshipped.
That is why PK stole Radi’s spotlight. Being birthed by the Soul means unbelievable power.
And that’s why Radi was so destroyed. She was worshipped, she was loved, she was treated like what she was — a Goddess. But then, some random creature part of a near completely extinct species appeared out of seemingly nowhere and dragged her worshippers way from her, all because he was made by something more powerful than she could ever be.
She was jealous. She was grieving. She was enraged. She was destroyed. Her mental state was in pieces, as was her following.
All that glory, completely stripped from her, leaving her forgotten and alone like she was nothing.
It broke her.
And she lost her mind.
She lost her will.
She lost herself.
She lost everything, and with it, her life.
And suddenly I feel really bad for calling her a bitch.
*ahem*
Yeah, PK was definitely deserving of the worship he received. But Radi in no way, shape, or form deserved to be left in the way she was.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I do think I’ll go cry now

Humble pie is really funny politically because it really went
“Oops y’all weren’t suppose to find out the ethically dubious way I planned on fixing this whole infection thing.”
“Wth is wrong with you!? We don’t want to worship someone like that. In fact, leave!”
“And leave y’all to defend yourselves against the infection and figure out a succession in politics?”
“…..”
“If you insist.”
Imagine being Lurien watching your people get restless and feeling a little like staging a coup and then your king, who you’ve pledged your life to more or less, goes “okay yeah I’ll step down” and then not only does that but fucks off out of Hallownest entirely and while gravid.
I mean him and root leaving probably makes Radi stops the infection esp if this early on, even if only because she’s baffled by it all. So there’s that. But I feel like Lurien and the knights got left with a kingdom that at best is very confused politically for next steps.
Meanwhile Herrah went “that’s hilarious. Good riddance.”
YEAH, NO, YOU SUMMARISED IT PERFECTLY, LIKE I COULDN'T DO IT ANY BETTER
Pale King rly went "Well the monkeys don't want me so it's your circus now" and left
Hallownest becomes a democracy and they choose Lurien to lead them so like. Good luck my man, you just got handed such a shitshow. Better do good or you're next!
Radiance chills out with the infection partly because she's just so baffled and partly because she doesn't consider the little mortal butterfly to be a threat
Meanwhile, Herrah couldn't care less, she already got Hornet out of all of this so she got what she want and she didn't lose anything in return. Win-win for her. (And yeah Hornet's older here because tiny big sister and her fuck-off tall little siblings is such a funny dynamic)
