The last harrowing week of December, a month after the fall of the Black Org and four hours into Shinichi-not-Conan’s massive multiple organ failure, Haibara finally turns on her heel and tells him, “Let’s fuse.”
a gift exchange fic for @subwalls <33 merry chrmbs. i wrote a 1.5k fic and then a 1.2k infodump KDFHJS
as with whenever i write hnk or steven universe, my mineral special interest goes Hyperdrive. mineral assignments and fusions listed under the cut
shinichi - lapis lazuli. hardness 5-6. often ground to make the vibrant blue pigment used in rennaissance paintings, and was used to paint the girl with a pearl earring. shinichi’s stone is originally purely blue, which is the most valuable form of lapis lazuli consisting mostly of lazurite and sodalite and i think matches pre-series shinichi’s arrogance and perfectionism; most readily available lapis lazuli has visible streaks of calcite or pyrite, some of which stains the rest of the gem a greenish color and lowers the commercial value of it. in terms of symbolism, lapis lazuli is thought to protect against mental attacks and bring peace, honesty, and self-awareness. i liked the blue with shinichi, liked the connection of the symbolism with his character, and lapis lazuli is one of my favorite minerals. in terms of story, i imagine lapis isn’t an entirely uncommon gem to have, and the apoptoxin develops stress fractures in shinichi’s gem that he passes off as calcite veins when he’s conan. these stress fractures grow as the story continues. i think haibara’s intermittent cures make them worse.

ai - onyx. hardness 6.5-7. specifically black onyx, which is most common and my favorite naturally occurring pattern of onyx. the name itself is rooted in the greek word for “claw” or “fingernail” due to cupid of roman mythos cutting his mother venus’ nails with his arrows. they fell into the sea, where they then became the onyx gemstone. onyx is believed to teach the wearer to rely on their own powers and persevere. i felt the black and white banding of black onyx suited haibara’s continuous moral ambiguity, especially when her character was first introduced, and i liked that on the mohs scale onyx is harder than lapis.

ran - anhydrite, also known as angelite. hardness 3.5. it’s generally white with a pearly luster. when exposed to water (hydrated) it becomes the commonly known gypsum (the non-crystal form of selenite), which is used in many different forms (construction, agriculture, sculpture, and medicine, to name a few). the softness of the mineral in contrast with its various commercial uses seemed to suit the damsel-in-distress archetype ran is meant to fit despite being a talented and brave martial artist and particularly sharp-tongued to boot. anhydrite is believed to be very calming and promote the holder’s self-belief and self-worth.

heiji - carnelian. hardness 6.5-7. it’s usually this really deep, egg-yolky orange-yellow color that i associate w heiji. it’s often used interchangeably with sard but they’re considered distinct subvarieties, with carnelian usually being softer and lighter in color. i imagine heiji’s father is sard. carnelian was believed to be a stone of courage both by the romans and the ancient egyptians and used to amplify confidence and strength. i liked the symbolism with heiji’s bullheadedness; he’s always felt more physical btwn himself and shinichi to me.

kaito - euclase. hardness 7.5. shit toughness, very brittle. its name literally translates to “easily breakable.” it’s usually a mix of colorless and light blue—conveniently fitting into kaito’s color scheme—and is believed to promote strength and clarity. it’s beautiful and i like the symbolism of kaito running around stealing precious stones, which in this verse are probably poofed versions of real people or something. it’s entirely possible pandora is the presumed-dead kuroba toichi or even that it’s shinichi’s gem (smth smth theyre both blue, smth smth pandora’s essence is in the apoptoxin, smth smth it would tie the franchises together). i also just like euclase.

gin - moissanite. hardness 9.25. a silicon carbide originally discovered in a meteor and mistakenly identified as diamond. it’s vitreous and colorless. i’m obsessed with it. it’s often used as a diamond alternative (buy moissanite instead of diamond, its cheaper and doesnt use forced labor bc its lab grown) and it can withstand huge pressures. it’s birefringent, which means it splits up light that’s aimed at it (diamonds don’t do that) and it’s thermoluminescent. it ranks higher on the refractive index than diamond WHICH MEANS IT’S LITERALLY SHINIER THAN DIAMOND like. why r people still buying diamonds when moissanite exists. anyway gin matched the colorlessness/whiteness of moissanite as well as its hardness and the fact that it’s a diamond alternative (i think karasuma is probably a diamond).

less comprehensive and but no less analytical list of fusions:
ran & shinichi: kyanite. hardness 4.5-5 parallel to one axis and 6.5-7 perpendicular to that axis. blue and white; metamorphic rock like lapis. one of my favorite minerals. kyanite is bright-eyed and somewhat naive and would run forever if they could.

ran & conan: sillimanite. hardness 7. Can Sometimes Be Blue and thin section is white. LISTEN. its perfect. i chose it bc it has the exact same chemical formula as kyanite (Al2SiO5), it just differs in physical properties. given conan’s fusion volatility i cannot imagine he hasn’t accidentally fused w ran at least once and given himself, prof agasa, ai, and heiji all a minor heart attack. for Maximum Drama it probably happened during the desperate revival arc. sillimanite hasn’t been together long enough to know who they are but i imagine they’re quite sad.

conan & ai: boleite. hardness 3-3.5. blue and black and endearingly cubic. often occurs in twinned crystals, which kinda works w ai and shinichi’s character parallels and similar situations. broke my own rule of having the fusion mineral share a mineral group with one of the constituent gems, but i forgive myself bc boleite was so perfect. runner up option was dumortierite which is a tectosilicate like chalcedony (onyx) and lazurite (primary mineral in lapis lazuli).

conan & heiji: fire agate. hardness 6-7. blue to yellow to red. carnelian is a type of chalcedony and agate is a type of chalcedony. i imagine fire agate is fierce and foulmouthed and only knows how to be gentle when he’s reminded. i think he’s also a little too honorable for his own good.

conan & kaito: alexandrite. hardness 8.5. minty blue but changes color to red in incandescent light (example linked), which is a quality i thought suited conan and kaito. alexandrite is an oxide mineral which means it again does not share a mineral group with conan or kaito but it’s a beryllium aluminate and euclase’s chemical formula contains both beryllium and aluminum goddamn it. alexandrite is quirky but focused and can be a little intense.

You Are Made of Stardust
Though the billions of people on Earth may come from different areas, we share a common heritage: we are all made of stardust! From the carbon in our DNA to the calcium in our bones, nearly all of the elements in our bodies were forged in the fiery hearts and death throes of stars.

The building blocks for humans, and even our planet, wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for stars. If we could rewind the universe back almost to the very beginning, we would just see a sea of hydrogen, helium, and a tiny bit of lithium.
The first generation of stars formed from this material. There’s so much heat and pressure in a star’s core that they can fuse atoms together, forming new elements. Our DNA is made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus. All those elements (except hydrogen, which has existed since shortly after the big bang) are made by stars and released into the cosmos when the stars die.

Each star comes with a limited fuel supply. When a medium-mass star runs out of fuel, it will swell up and shrug off its outer layers. Only a small, hot core called a white dwarf is left behind. The star’s cast-off debris includes elements like carbon and nitrogen. It expands out into the cosmos, possibly destined to be recycled into later generations of stars and planets. New life may be born from the ashes of stars.

Massive stars are doomed to a more violent fate. For most of their lives, stars are balanced between the outward pressure created by nuclear fusion and the inward pull of gravity. When a massive star runs out of fuel and its nuclear processes die down, it completely throws the star out of balance. The result? An explosion!
Supernova explosions create such intense conditions that even more elements can form. The oxygen we breathe and essential minerals like magnesium and potassium are flung into space by these supernovas.

Supernovas can also occur another way in binary, or double-star, systems. When a white dwarf steals material from its companion, it can throw everything off balance too and lead to another kind of cataclysmic supernova. Our Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will study these stellar explosions to figure out what’s speeding up the universe’s expansion. 
This kind of explosion creates calcium – the mineral we need most in our bodies – and trace minerals that we only need a little of, like zinc and manganese. It also produces iron, which is found in our blood and also makes up the bulk of our planet’s mass!

A supernova will either leave behind a black hole or a neutron star – the superdense core of an exploded star. When two neutron stars collide, it showers the cosmos in elements like silver, gold, iodine, uranium, and plutonium.

Some elements only come from stars indirectly. Cosmic rays are nuclei (the central parts of atoms) that have been boosted to high speed by the most energetic events in the universe. When they collide with atoms, the impact can break them apart, forming simpler elements. That’s how we get boron and beryllium – from breaking star-made atoms into smaller ones.
Half a dozen other elements are created by radioactive decay. Some elements are radioactive, which means their nuclei are unstable. They naturally break down to form simpler elements by emitting radiation and particles. That’s how we get elements like radium. The rest are made by humans in labs by slamming atoms of lighter elements together at super high speeds to form heavier ones. We can fuse together elements made by stars to create exotic, short-lived elements like seaborgium and einsteinium.

From some of the most cataclysmic events in the cosmos comes all of the beauty we see here on Earth. Life, and even our planet, wouldn’t have formed without them! But we still have lots of questions about these stellar factories. 
In 2006, our Stardust spacecraft returned to Earth containing tiny particles of interstellar dust that originated in distant stars, light-years away – the first star dust to ever be collected from space and returned for study. You can help us identify and study the composition of these tiny, elusive particles through our Stardust@Home Citizen Science project.

Okay, fhat is DEFINETLY not a crossbreed. For one, Jigglypuff and Aegislash aren't even in the same egg group. Jigglypuff is in the fairy egg group, while Aegislash is in the mineral egg group. Two, if it somehow WAS a crossbreed, it would be Jigglypuff and Doublade since they're both three staged and would match with each other. Three, no crossbreed would look that much like the other pokemon!
Either this is a fusion, or this is fake. And I don't fuck with fusions because I've seen what they do and my god, that crap is horryifiying, and I do NOT want to encourage it.

OK here are my thoughts on the world building with Megatron insisting on fusion cannon weddings for the bitties.
While Megs is the Champion of Koan, Megatron of Tarn was D-16 long before he was a gladiator and god of war.
So I'm thinking he has some cultural biases from being a Tarnian Miner. And I'd imaging with the danger of the mines and the Functionism very few low caste sparklings had both parents. And they suffered for it. both in terms of being orphaned and lacking legal protections including inheritance rights because their parents weren't permitted to be conjuxed without permission rarely given to miners.
Worse laws came into place that single parent sparklings and sparklings who's parents weren't conjuxed could be taken by the state at any time for any reason under the sun. Clearly non-Forged Sparklings need stable conjuxed families so they could receive the light of Primus not coming from his spark. And Tarn already had a strong taboo about not having a sparkling outside of being conjuxed.
Worse, the right to be conjuxed was something that was slowly being striped from everyone but the elite. The process by Megatron's youth became something you had to pay heavily for. Upper middle cast could still afford it with much saving or borrowing but imagine the cost for the Marriage license instead of being $60 USD the license itself costs the full average price of a wedding $30,000 USD. And the equivalent of a Justice of the Peace wedding cost instead of $120-150 cost $75,000. The lower cast and the lower middle cast are priced out of being able to get conjuxed. For Disposables not only did they need to find the cash, they also needed permission from the one/company who owned their contract and sponsorship/vetting form a Priest of the Thirteen. Said Priest could choose to waive the fee if he felt the applicants were worthy. In theory it's possible but in reality impossible.
All of Prima's Priests have to come from the Priestly Caste. Most of the rest had to as well in practice even if it wasn't forbidden in the holy texts but there is one Priesthood that accepts Mechs outside of the Priestly Cast. Megatronus, god of War only accepts Warriors for Priests. And in Megatron's stint in the Pits of Kaon, some bright spark thought Megatron becoming a fake Priest of Megatronus for publicity would be a great idea, kinda like a preacher gimmick for pro-wrestling. Megatron refused because while he's not overly religious, it gives him bad vibes. Just spiting on the culture of his city and playing into so many stereotypes. Gladiators like all athletes are superstitious. Megatron is able to insist his adamate refusal is to not risk offending his names sake and his city's patron. He doesn't want his streak at the top cursed.
This old Tank, the priest of Megatronus, is nearly offended as Megatron by the idea of presiding over a fake religious ceremony for the Pit. Even if his temple he can't afford to refuse. the Wheels and gears on Meg's head start turning. Being a real priest even of the Fallen would grant him more social clout and freedom of movement. It would also give his nacient Cause a touch more legitimacy.
So when the Priest coldly rises to stalk out, Megatron rises and state he has no intention in taking part in a religiously themed farce, he also has all the qualifications for being an acolyte aspirant to the priesthood which doubles the insult to Tarn and it's patron. Which gets the Priest's attention. Megatron's manager is chased out of his own office while the Priest and Megatron have a very intense talk about Megatron's motivations.
Megs is a silver tonged bastard and the old priest recognized he has a potential brilliant general on his hands. The youngster has given him a chance to maybe eventually put Prima's priesthood in it's place. The manager is being permitted back to his office so the Priest can inform him Megatron is now in training to be a priest of Megatronus and a dispensation is granted for him to do so in Kaon. The Major Rites of course are to be publicly witnessed and broadcast but only in full. This is when Megatron realizes the old mech in front of him is actually the High Priest of Megatronus.
Megatron becomes a priest of Megatronus and is actually, to his embarrassment, the High Priest by both seniority and military rank by the time the cons get to Earth.
So Megatron through a mixture of spite, using the Autobot code against the Autobots(their own laws force them to return the sparkling to their creators or their designated next of kin,) and lingering Tarnish cultural baggage is enforcing you get someone heavy you gotta marry them. It doesn't happen often because sparking is rare any how and baffles are mandatory, but it does happen. Megatron's point on this is absolute. This has resulted in Autobots and Neutrals being taken prisoner so they can "make an honest mech" out of someone, or be "Made an honest mech" if the Deceptacon sparked them up instead. One of the practical reasons why Fraternization is frowned upon by Autobots.

Hi! I really want to read your Gemcyt au because I adore your writing (and mcyt aus) but I have never seen a singular minute of Steven Universe so I have no clue about anything related to the gems. Is it possible for you give me a rundown of the basics so I can read it and (slightly) understand what is happening?
for sure!
so gems are inorganic aliens. their true ‘body’ is a gemstone somewhere on their body (if you look at fanart for the gemcyt au, for example, grian’s is over one of his eyes)- this is the only part of them that can actually be permanently hurt or killed (shattered). the rest of their physical form is basically a solid projection that will disappear (‘poof’) back into the gem to heal if it gets too damaged.
there are general abilities most gems share, such as shapeshifting by adjusting their projected form or summoning a weapon out of their gem- newer gems are more likely to lack these abilities. some kinds of gems have type-specific abilities as well, as all gems are made for a specific purpose. for example, lapis lazulis have hydrokinesis, because they’re used to reshape planets for the purposes of the gem empire.
the gem empire is a highly hierarchal interstellar empire that colonizes planets to drain them of their minerals and resources to produce more gems, ultimately destroying all native life. all gems have a specific position and purpose in the empire, and are not allowed to deviate from it. they refer to their home system, where the empire is based, as homeworld.
gems are capable of something called fusion, which is where they basically combine their physical forms and become a new consciousness that embodies the relationship of the component gems. it’s presented as being quite intimate. fusion between different types of gems is prohibited on homeworld.
all gems are non binary on account of being rocks. in SU canon they use she/her by default but in my fic they’re he/him by default cause the gender ratio in third life is so skewed. gems don’t normally have names- they are generally just called by their gem type (pearl, lapis, etc) as their name, but they also have a longer identification number.

The Great Sand Sea Desert stretches over an area of 72,000km² linking Egypt and Libya. If you find yourself in a particular part of the desert in south-east Libya and south-western parts of Egypt, you'll spot pieces of yellow glass scattered across the sandy landscape. It was first described in a scientific paper in 1933 and is known as Libyan desert glass. Mineral collectors value it for its beauty, its relative rarity – and its mystery. A pendant found in Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun's tomb contains a piece of the glass. Natural glasses are found elsewhere in the world; examples include moldavites from the Ries crater in Europe and tektites from the Ivory Coast. But none are as rich in silica as Libyan desert glass, nor are they found in such large lumps and quantities. The origin of the glass has been the subject of debate among scientists for almost a century. Some suggested it might be from volcanoes on the moon. Others propose it's the product of lightning strikes ("fulgurites" – glass that forms from fusion of sand and soil where they are hit by lightning).
