'The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones' on Disney+
The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones (1992-1999) was a labor of love from producer George Lucas. Originally broadcast on ABC as The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, each episode of hour-long weekly series took viewers on a globetrotting journey with young Indiana Jones and his parents, landing in historical hotspots and meeting legendary figures. Lucas himself wrote the stories for nearly half of…

Film: CAR WASH (d. Michael Schultz, 1976, USA)
Forum: Doc Films Format: 35mm
Observations: I will never tire of this pitch-perfect Los Angeles comedy, apparently all filmed on location. The script (by Joel Schumacher) and filmmaker give every character (and a huge, fine cast) a moment in the sun. The highlight to me remains the irritable relationship between the older-but-wiser ex-con Lonnie (Ivan Dixon) and the hot-headed revolutionary (Bill Duke); their final scene is beautifully felt. About 30 showed up for this show.

Lindy: I'm so tired of you running off at your mouth it's getting me down honey. Why don't you just leave? And be an assassin? Or is the only thing you're good at shooting off is your big mouth?
Duane: Will you please get out of my face you sorry looking faggot.
Lindy: Who you calling sorry looking?
[Everybody laughs]
Duane: Can't ya'll see "she" aint funny?
[laughter stops]
Duane: She's just another poor example of how the system is destroying our men.
Lindy: Honey, I'm more man than you'll ever be and more woman than you'll ever get.

Film: LIVIN' LARGE (d. Michael Schultz, 1991, USA)
Forum: Chicago Film Society, NEIU Format: 35mm
Observations: First trip back to NEIU since the first pandemic shutdown. I was motivated by the opportunity to see a Michael Schultz film on the big screen. It's a little-known, little-seen comedy in the vein of NETWORK, produced at the time when Hollywood was trying to strike gold with Black-themed and directed features. The first reel was genuinely hilarious as we watch a young would-be news reporter backing his way into the story of a lifetime, the hostage-taking of a scout troop, and talking the gunman into surrendering. The movie then spun in strange and sometimes surreal directions. Enjoyable. Maybe fifty folks were in attendance. The show began with a "making-of" promotional short for SPARKLE (1976).
