From A Design Teacher To An Entrepreneur: A Billon Dollar Story Of “Canva”
Tumblr media
The term “entrepreneur” is widely understood in the year 2022, and universities all around the world offer courses in it to help students hone their entrepreneurial talents. Some people even like the word. But, when young “Melanie Perkins” decided to start selling handmade scarves at markets around Perth two decades ago, it was not a popular practice.
However, Perkins has always been enthusiastic about business and got enough support to build a business. As she says, “I never forgot the freedom and excitement of being able to build a business.” That was one of the driving forces that led me to launch what would evolve to be Canva. ”
Melanie Perkins was born in 1988 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia. She was born to multicultural parents: her father is a Malaysian of Filipino and Sri Lankan origin, and her mother was born in Australia. Her father works as an engineer, while her mother is a teacher.
Family and early life
Perkins had already shown an entrepreneurial spirit at a young age. She started her first business when she was 14 years old. She aspired to be a professional skater, even getting up at 4:30 a.m. daily for training sessions. She spent the majority of her childhood at Sacred Heart College before enrolling in college at the University of Western Australia.
Perkins studied communications, psychology, and commerce at the University of Western Australia. As part of her major, she also taught pupils the fundamentals of computer design. After seeing her pupils struggle with Adobe Photoshop and other sophisticated design platforms, she was inspired to create an easier and more efficient graphic design platform. Perkins dropped out of college at the age of 19 to pursue a career in business.
Career
Perkins and her future husband Cliff Obrecht co-founded Fusion Books in 2007. Fusion Books is a platform that enables students to create their own school yearbooks using a drag-and-drop interface and a collection of design templates that includes images, artwork, and fonts. Despite the fact that she had meant to work on her original project, insufficient resources forced her to convert to another, yet Fusion Books nevertheless achieved substantial success.
Perkins began designing Fusion Books at her mother’s house, with her parents assisting with yearbook production. Meanwhile, Obrecht would contact colleges and universities in an attempt to attract new clients for the company. Fusion Books would develop to become Australia’s largest yearbook company in a matter of years, later expanding to France and New Zealand.
The idea of “Canva”
She developed an idea while teaching fellow students basic computer design as part of her communications and business courses. In the age of the internet, the process of designing and publishing a poster or a flyer—composing it in Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft Word, converting it to the correct size and storing it as a PDF, and taking it to a business like Staples to print—seemed time-consuming. Isn’t it much easier to do everything in one spot with one online tool?
“The first concept was to make design incredibly simple,” she explains.
Perkins was afraid that if she waited too long, someone else would solve the problem first. So she hired freelancers to create a Flash website to target one area she identified as consistent and underserved: school yearbooks, which are traditionally handled by student volunteers. Fusion Books, Obrecht and Perkins’ venture, found a market almost immediately. Perkins paused her studies with one semester left in college. Perkins’ mother fed the printers ink overnight during high season. Obrecht cold-called potential customers. Obrecht merely lowered his voice when schools wanted to speak with a manager. The company soon expanded to 400 schools, with licensees as far away as France. It was a beginning. But Perkins couldn’t go much further without venture capital, which was difficult to come by in Perth, a city focused on mining and petrochemicals.
A taste of disappointment
Perkins and Cliff Obrecht wanted to expand on what they’d done with Fusion Books in 2011. Canva’s concept was simple: empower users to make any design they wanted. Wedding invitations, business cards, social media posts, eBooks, and other materials were included (without needing a degree in graphic design).
The online digital design platform was template-based and simple to use, which solved a significant problem for anyone who needed to design something but had the necessary skills. Canva altered the standards for producing high-quality designs by making this service available for free.
However, investors were not convinced. Perkins and Obrecht were dismissed more than 100 times. “Rejection is painful, but failure was never an option… For better or worse, I don’t give up easy when I set my mind to something. “Being rejected a lot in our early stages only meant I had to work harder and tweak my strategy,” Perkins said in a speech about failure and how to grow from it hosted by Blackbird Ventures.
Melanie Perkins refuses to give up despite the frequent rejection. There was nothing she wouldn’t do to help her company succeed, even learning to kitesurf. Read Full Article: From A Design Teacher To An Entrepreneur: A Billon Dollar Story Of “Canva”

Ophelia Hagan, Daughter of Tommy Hagan and Carol Perkins;
Tumblr media
Trigger warnings: violence, anger issues, law breaking, and secret relationships.
-------------------------------------------------------
Her full name is Ophelia Artemis Hagan.
She is the daughter of Tommy Hagan and Carol Perkins.
She is fifteen years old.
She is dating Adrien Byers-Wheeler—not that their parents are aware of that.
She has asthma. Despite this, she likes sitting with Adrien and Nova when they smoke—because it makes her feel less lonely.
Ophelia practices witchcraft with Adrien and Nova for fun and because she's curious to see if it will work.
She has a protective streak like both her parents.
Oh and she has her dad's temper.
She owns tarot cards and is a big fan of gothic and punk culture.
Ophelia loves embroidery, card games, sewing, Halloween, and urban exploring.
She takes part in her boyfriend's YouTube channel.
She is surprisingly good at breaking and entering but will not elaborate on HOW she knows how to do so and when she learned to do so.
She also takes part in quite a bit of vandalism not that she will admit this in front of her parents.
Ophelia is good at climbing and sneaking around.
She is very protective of her younger brother (despite the fact they don't always get along) and is not afraid to hit a bitch—especially since she knows she will not get in trouble with her parents if she does so to protect herself or her loved ones.
Ophelia is amazing at Archery and uses this as a weapon when she needs one.
Her favorite color is black BUT she also loves patchwork clothes and includes that into her outfit when she can.
She's note a big fan of makeup but still knows how to do it and will do it for others  as well as herself on special occasions.
She has six of Adrien's shirts/hoodies in her closet but since their styles are so similar her parents haven't noticed.
Ophelia finds killing Demogorgons and the like VERY therapeutic.
She uses her 'creepiness' to her advantage to scare off people she doesn't like. It works surprisingly often.
Oh and at this point, she gives absolutely no fucks as to how people view her due to all the times grown ass adults have bullied her due to who her parents.
Ophelia loves death rock and Halloween music as well as heavy metal but will listen to other music types as well if she likes the lyrics.
One of her favorite non heavy metal or death rock artists is Melanie Martinez.
She loves cookies and cream ice cream.
She wears an evil eye necklace that Adrien gave her for their one year anniversary.
She doesn’t have a lot in common with her parents but they get along just fine regardless.
She writes fanfiction.
Ophelia skips class often. Which has resulted in a lot of detentions that she also skipped.
She loves horror movies.
She has a black and white pet rabbit named 'Oreo'.
She has a patchwork of random knowledge that she can let loose on a whim.
Stefan Harrington is, surprisingly, her best friend. But she is close to the other Harrington kids as well.
She is surprisingly good with kids and loves doing face paint for them.
Her most used curse word is 'bullshit'.
She hates drama and just wants to be left alone.
She works at the pumpkin patch.
She has a record. No, she won't tell you what for because it isn't your business.
Ophelia HATES entitled people and will not mince words when dealing with them.
She gets headaches often.
She makes fanart and fan edits.
When she finds interest in something, she can become a bit obsessed with it.
Her favorite horror movie is Final Destination ( because she looks like one of the actresses, not that she'll admit to it).
Her favorite video game is the Sims.
Her favorite book is 'The Old Willis Place' by Mary Downing.
One time in middle school someone hit Adrien and Ophelia went absolutely ballistic on them…. Which is exactly why most people don't mess with Adrien. Probably doesn't help that the one time someone a little older tried to start something, Zane lost his shit on them too.
Note:
These headcanons take place in my Stranger Things au 'Cats in the Cradle'. In that au, Tommy and Carol are left to raise Steve's four infant children with the help of the Upside Down Crew, Steve's half brother, Steve's younger cousin, and their collective families.  In that au, Jason and Eddie live.  Max is less seriously injured.  Phil Callahan is Steve's older half brother and Chrissy, her brother, and Fred Benson were Steve's cousins.  Oh and Steve hooked up with one of his pre-nancy girlfriends and after his death she found herself pregnant with quads that Steve never got to meet. Hope that clears up any confusion regarding these ocs and headcanons.

An incomplete actually 90s casting of Yellowjackets(teens)
My silly fantasy casting of an actual 90s version of Yellowjackets, teen edition.
Nat: Clea Du Vall
Van: Natasha Lyonne (Literally all Natasha ever wants to do is have amazing hair and kiss girls)
Shauna: Emily Perkins
Jackie: Katharine Isabelle
(If you don’t know why I paired shauna and jackie do yourself a HUGE favour and watch ginger snaps, you’ll thank me)
Lottie: Neve Campbell
Laura Lee: Alicia Silverstone
Misty: Brittany Murphy (can you imagine... Misty’s my fav role so of course I have multiple ideal casts, Winona Ryder, Fairuza Balk, weirdly enough Melanie Lynskey could’ve probably killed in this role... but I think Brittany Murphy is the most.)
Travis: Heath Ledger (I genuinely feel like he’d have the kind of range to play Travis’ whole vibe. If not Heath then maybe Keanu Reeves? IDK it’s a really specific role...while I struggle to enjoy Travis’ time on screen I get the point of his character and I genuinely think that Kevin Alves is doing a really solid job as an actor)
Tai: Gabrielle Union (Never got enough chances at the time, the 90s had practically no good black parts, so it was all like “best friend” roles and shit, I’d have loved to see more of what she could do, she really stole the scenes she was in, but thankfully she’s gotten more solid work as she’s aged)
Coach Ben: (Very hard to cast... I don’t know why I’m having such struggles. Chris Cooper? I’m not sure...)
Minor roles: (Honestly I haven’t cast these at all, just because we’ve seen so little of them that I don’t feel like I know anything about them beyond vibes and I want to see more of them before I do.)
Akilah:
Crystal:
Gen:
Melissa:
Javi:
(Pretty sure if I remember correctly there are 3 other as of yet unnamed girls left to see, obvs can’t cast)

From Startup to Sensation: How Melanie Perkins Transformed Design with Canva
Have you ever used multiple apps or software for editing just a single video or photo and felt it was difficult? Yes,  before Canva designing, and editing photos and videos was a difficult task. In today’s world designing is an effective and powerful tool for communication, storytelling, social media platforms, and many more.
Tumblr media
In this article, we discuss one such effective online designing tool that is been widely used by people called Canva and followed by the entrepreneurial journey of Melanie Perkins, the founder and CEO of Canva.
Melanie Perkins: Co-founder and CEO
Melanie Perkins is a successful women entrepreneur from Australia who founded Canva along with co-founders Cliff Obrecht and colleague Cameron Adams in the year 2013. Perkins is a graduate with a BA in communication, psychology, marketing, and management from The University of Western Australia. She has done her public relations internship at Weber Shandwick and was a Multimedia Centre Technical Assistant and Tutor at The University of Western Australia. Later she founded and directed Fusion Books which is an online publishing system enabling people to create stylish and professional yearbooks easily and quickly. After this Perkins founded the online platform Canva for designing.
Perkins, being frustrated with the difficulty of learning and using design tools like Photoshop, and InDesign along with her partner Cliff Obrecht and colleague Cameron Adams, came up with an idea to make designing simple and easy. They noticed the demand for design along with the growing need for good visual content day by day. Though initially, it was not an easy journey with Canva they made an effective strategy to make it a Unicorn in Australia.
Canva was able to grow rapidly as it was solving a problem that was faced by many people all over the world, Canva provides access to designing for everyone without any prior training or experience with simple and easy-to-use software. They focused on building software with better user experience rather than replacing the existing tools and aimed to help everyone create professional and beautiful designs on their own.
Melanie Perkins has been horned for her determination and inspiring other women, she was listed in the Forbes Under 30 Hall of Fame by Forbes and selected as a member of Forbes Asia’s 30 Under 30, in the tech category. In 2015 Perkins was awarded the top Prize at the NSW Technology Entrepreneur of the Year and has also gained many more.
Canva: Design anything. Publish anywhere.

When I think back about who I was a year ago all I remember is being a mess. I remember the girl that cried in the crowd of a concert because she missed her ex. I remember the girl that skipped meals and hid in her car for lunch breaks at work. I remember the girl that was sick of trying and failing, so she only did what was easy. I wanted to be liked by people whose opinion I did not care about prior, I wanted to fit in with my friends, to have natural hair and wear skinny jeans. I wanted to not be me.
I realized how self-centered I was for months and years before that. How I put myself on a pedestal and “how dare you talk shit about me, you’re just jealous because you peaked in High School and I’m peaking now“.
Good for me I did not peak at 19. I was a bitch at 19.
When my ex broke up with me I thought it’s her loss, I’m great and she’s missing out on that. Now I know that I was far from great. I was toxic and terrible and everything I thought I wasn’t. What I am trying to say is; If I would have been my ex, I would have ended things way sooner, gosh, if I would have been her, I would have never started thing off with me in the first place.
This is not about her, though. Although lately, everything is about her again. So, hey Augs, if you’re seeing this (and I know you will or at least that’s what I’m telling myself), how’s things going? Everything sitting tight? February is kicking butts again, as usual, you know how it is with me and that time of year. But besides that I’m a lot better now. Have you seen what I’m up too lately? Lots of cool shit… totally… 100%… definitely not just saying this to appear cool. Well, I guess I still can only dream to be half the person you are. I really don’t know if you’re happy and it is not my place to ask but I’m glad the fighting with your friends seemed to have found an end, I’m glad you and your sister get along better now, I’m glad you finally dropped out of school. Not because I want you to have a miserable life, just because I know how much school took a toll on you. I hope you find something that’s more your cup of tea.
I’m losing my focus again, something I try to allow myself to do lately. Not everything always has to be straight forward and thought through till perfection.
What I was trying to say, I only remember the bad parts of me from a year ago. I always only remember the bad parts of my life. Isn’t your brain psychologically supposed to forget the bad stuff and hold onto the good things? I wouldn’t know, I stopped reading about psychology about the same time I stopped buying clothes at least twice my size and call half a cucumber a “healthy lunch“. I cannot be my own therapist, and I cannot be anyone else’s either.
I only remember the bits of my past that make me roll my eyes in cringe so far back that I can see parts of my brain that I can name since Junior High but never admitted because being good in biology is not the emo-punk-alt-mix image that I wanted people to have about me. Turns out just because you listen to Fall Out Boy religiously, wear black jeans and keep a skateboard in the trunk of your car at all times does not make people think you’re cool and edgy and alternative. Bummer.
What I’m trying to say is, not all of me sucked a year ago.
I just went through an old Pinterest board to find ~the perfect playlist cover~, (as one does), and I have gotten flashbacks of the person I was a year ago. And damn, was I a sick little bitch. And not the kind of bitch I referred myself as earlier in this text, but the female empowering kind of bitch. The way Hayley Williams, Melanie Perkins and Michelle Obama are sick little bitches!
Not that I could compare myself with any of those women, not that I would even stand a chance to be in the same room as any of these women.
But I was badass. A little at least. While I was in the worst period of self-consciousness ever, since I was 12, or 14, or 16, I was also the most confident I ever was. I might have treated myself like absolute garbage but I sure as hell did not let anyone else just look at me with wrong intentions. While I always had thick skin for peoples comments (quite literally, because the most people were talking shit about me was my weight), I never stood up for myself. I simply did not care about any of that enough. And now finally I did? That’s a change I did not expect in my last months of being a teen girl.
All I’m trying to phrase with this one is that sometimes I guess I do need to cut myself some slack. I did outrageously stupid things like going to a concert 200 miles away from home while continuously telling my mom that I went with my ex – who she didn’t know I stopped talking to approximate a year prior (some day I will tell her the truth, maybe) – but I did some epic shit like going to a concert 200 miles away from home while continuously telling my mom that I went with my ex. To keep this short and simple, my vision board around that time is something I can only dream about now, but then again, isn’t that the whole purpose of a vision board? Whilst my hair was chocolate brown, a color I haven’t seen on my head since I stared 7th grade, I was living my best life as a natural red. You can take the hair dye away from me, but you cannot take the color red out of my soul. I was courageous, I was bold, and I was fucking red. So although I was being an insecure pain in the ass for everyone that had to hold a conversation with me, I was the absolute definition of rockstar girlfriend in my dreams and behind the curtains. And now that I do not have a 9-to-5 that requires me to keep my hair, well, not crazily colored, and I have no tears left for peoples that I want in my life but who do not want me to be in theirs, I think it is time to let the curtain fall and let the world get a glimpse of who they have been missing out on. It is time to let Fran be the center of my consciousness again. After all, it is hard to be the fun aunt if you have no fun stories to share. Oh wait, did I say too much now? Hm, no time for explanations, I think I’m reaching the word limi-
