Meet Joe Black (1998, Martin Brest)

Meet Joe Black is a 1998 film directed by Martin Brest, a remake of the 1933 film Death Takes a Holiday, previously revived in 1971 with the same name as the original. The film is inspired by the theatrical comedy of the same name by Alberto Casella, which tells of the legends about his summer villa - Villa Josephine, nicknamed the "cursed villa" - in Rocchetta Cairo.

Death came to Earth because he was intrigued by the emotions regarding love praised by Bill, which he will take with him at the end of the journey.

Meanwhile, Bill is ousted from the board of directors of his company by Drew, Susan's ex-boyfriend, who wants to merge with another company.

Filming of the film took place mainly in New York, USA.

The film's soundtrack, whose main theme is Whisper of a Thrill, was composed by Thomas Newman.

The film was released in US cinemas on November 13, 1998 and in Italy on January 29, 1999.

In addition to the full version of the film lasting approximately three hours, a short version was made for television and airline. Because of this modification of the film, which did not involve the majority of Bill Parrish's business, the director, Martin Brest, became very furious, so much so that he signed this version of the feature film with the nickname often used by disgruntled directors, Alan Smithee.

Roger Ebert gave the film three stars, but disliked the marginal plot and overly forced ending. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone gave the film four stars, but criticized the lack of depth of most of the characters.

On the site Rotten Tomatoes the film obtained a 46% approval rating from critics based on 50 professional reviews, calling it "glacially slow and not at all eventful" (the site's critical consensus reads: "Meet Joe Black is beautiful to watch and benefits from a likable cast, but that's not enough to make up for the punishing three-hour running time of this sluggish drama."

On IMDb the film was received with 7.2/10.

With an estimated budget of $90,000,000, the film grossed $142,940,096 worldwide. In Italy the film grossed €6,000,000.

It isn’t combat based. Missions include keeping up with McQueen’s top speed by racing down Radiator Springs’ main street, learning how to turn right to go left at Willy’s Butte, keeping up with Cruz’s top speed on Fireball Beach, avoiding pushy competitors with the Thunder Hollow challengers, and practicing with Cruz at Thomasville, culminating in the Piston Cup race at Florida International Speedway, where the objective is to win against Jackson Storm.

Sora enters the world as a custom-made sports coupe mixing a few real-life sports car models before visits to Luigi’s Casa Della Tires and Ramone’s House of Body Art end with him modified into a next-gen race car sponsored by Dinoco (with Tex’s blessing) and with Cruz’s number.

It’s set during Cruz’s first Piston Cup racing season, so McQueen still has Doc’s colors and spends the Florida race as Sora’s crew chief.

As Sora finishes his story, Mater is certainly unhappy with Xehanort’s actions forcing Sora’s hand. “That dad-gum Xehanort”, he says angrily. Extra points if Sora doesn’t get to the part where Xehanort is dead, then Sarge gets in his face and demands him to teach Xehanort a lesson when he gets back in a militaristic manner. “Is that understood,” Sarge yells. Then Sora tries to correct him, but gets cut off and asked again, “Is that understood,” and has to respond, “Sir, yes, sir!”

Of course, during the top speed races, Luigi is the one to signal the race to begin.

In the Radiator Springs race, Sora’s top speed is tracked by Sheriff’s speed radar, and on Fireball Beach, it’s via Cruz’s personal assistant, Hamilton.

If you fail the “Turn Right to go Left” mission, Sora goes flying into the bed of cacti, and Mater fishes him out.

I know I’ll get hate for this, but Cars 2 elements are here. Heck, maybe Mater can’t be present most for the training because he’s busy with Finn and Holley. After all, does he still owe Holley a first date?

I wanted the player character in this world to be Kairi just so Storm can feel the embarrassment of losing to not one, but two “costume girls”.

The Piston Cup race is announced as a 500-lap race, but no game developer is that malicious to force the player to race 500 laps around an oval, so they’d take after the first Cars game and make it twelve laps with the sun slowly lowering throughout the race.

Arkady Martine’s Hugo-winning novels are delightfully huge, sprawling affairs. It’s a different kind of delight to see her approach some of the same themes and influences in a new style, as she does in her latest: the tight and unsettling novella Rose/House. Against the backdrop of the near-future California desert, two small-town detectives find themselves embroiled in a particularly strange case when the AI of the seemingly uninhabited Rose House – final creation of world-famous architect Basit Deniau – announces that it contains a dead body. Investigating this possible murder leads them to the late Deniau’s former student, to a strange and possibly-nefarious group of international art dealers and urban planners, and, most ominously, to the strange intelligence of Rose House itself.

The procedural homicide investigation is one of the most tried-and-true plot vehicles, and one that maps well onto genre setups far more outlandish than this. All too easily, these plots tend to double as copaganda, and an excellent if quiet part of Rose/House is how it distances itself from that – partially through plot, partiallythrough implied social changes. Alongside all the usual-but-devastating near-future details, such as water rations and accompanying desperation in the American Southwest, Martine includes hints of actual police reform. Precisely because these reforms read as boring and infrastructural – neither detective is armed at critical junctures, because of the “hours of check-out paperwork” – they read as encouragingly achievable.

Martine hat-tips William Gibson fairly early in the investigation, and Rose/House reads, in part, like a riff on the underexplored creepiness of his work: the uncanny closeness of inhuman technology, the hauntology of artifacts and built environments, both the promise and the threat of technological expanse and evolution. The nebulous larger plot behind the murder – of which our detectives descry only the vaguest of outlines – is one involving digital archives, legally and ethically fraught urban planning, and, as the novella somewhat self-consciously reminds us, weird architects: it all combines for a story that’s stylish, discomforting, and strangely believable.

Cyberpunk might be one influence I’d bring up in discussing Martine’s Teixcalaan novels – particularly if pulling on the interesting loose thread about the fused AI/human police force in A Memory Called Empire, a theme intriguingly revisited here. But a more likely comparison would be to C.J. Cherryh, whose political and psychological approach to space opera clearly informs Martine’s work. Rose/House, with its narrower focus – wholly terrestrial, unearthly as the house may be – is still digging into themes that Cherryh fans will appreciate: the artist’s desire to bend reality of Wave Without A Shore, the AI-assisted posthumous grasp for control of Cyteen.

My favorite bit of homage, though, is the superbly well-done nod to Shirley Jackson – Rose/House has a deeply satisfying set of recurring phrases and images that kind of rhyme with The Haunting of Hill House – in a different pitch, under different lighting. Nothing about this feels derivative. It’s Louis Kahn’s idea of ‘‘Silence and Light’’ as a prompt for a murderous ghost; it takes the house as seriously as the haunting. Rose/House is a freaky love letter to architecture, weird and otherwise.

TULSA KING follows New York mafia capo Dwight “The General” Manfredi (Stallone), after he is released from prison after 25 years and is unceremoniously exiled by his boss to set up shop in Tulsa, Okla. Realizing that his mob family may not have his best interests in mind, Dwight slowly builds a crew from a group of unlikely characters to help him establish a new criminal empire in a place that to him might as well be another planet. Delany will play Margaret, an affluent and influential equestrian and owner of a sprawling horse farm and animal preserve. She is a formidable presence and a trustee of the Annie Oakley Society.

Delany made her mark as Army nurse Colleen McMurphy on “China Beach,” for which she received two Emmy Awards and four nominations for Best Dramatic Actress. Delany also received an Emmy nomination for a guest-starring role on the CBS drama “Family Law.” Delany’s additional television credits include “Body of Proof,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Hand of God,” and most recently “The American Guest.” She has also been the voice of Lois Lane on “Superman: TAS,” “The Batman” and “Justice League” and “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.” On film, she has appeared in “Light Sleeper,” “Housesitter,” “Tombstone” and “Fly Away Home” among many others. Theater credits include “A Life” and “Translations” on Broadway, “Blood Moon” off-Broadway, “Much Ado About Nothing” at the Old Globe Theatre, the Pulitzer prize-winning play “Dinner with Friends,” “The Parisian Woman,” “The Night of the Iguana,” “Collective Rage: A Play in Five Betties,” and most recently the premiere of “Good Night Nobody” at the McCarter Theater.

The series also stars Andrea Savage ("I'm Sorry”), Martin Starr ("Silicon Valley"), Max Casella (“The Tender Bar”), Domenick Lombardozzi (“The Irishman”), Vincent Piazza (“Boardwalk Empire”), Jay Will (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), A.C. Peterson (“Superman & Lois") and Garrett Hedlund (“The United States vs. Billie Holiday”).

Mirroring the successful 2021 launches of 1883 and MAYOR OF KINGSTOWN, Paramount Network will air a linear sneak peek of TULSA KING’s debut episode on Nov. 13, as a special simulcast event immediately following the highly anticipated Season 5 premiere of “Yellowstone.” Similarly, the second episode of TULSA KING will air behind “Yellowstone” on Nov. 20. All remaining episodes will be available to stream weekly on Sundays exclusively on Paramount+. TULSA KING will also premiere on Paramount+ in Canada on November 13, followed by a premiere in Australia and The UK on November 14. Poltergeist has Steven Spielberg written all over it -- literally, since he wrote the story and collaborated on the screenplay, but also thematically, since its setting is the suburbia in which he grew up and which he portrayed in so many of his films. So it's no surprise that the controversy over how much of the film is really Tobe Hooper's continues to this day. It's clear that Poltergeist is a lot closer in tone and technique to Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) than it is to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1972). That in itself should put an end to any arguments over authorship. I am not a fan of horror movies, and I found Hooper's earlier film simply unpleasant -- shocks without substance. Not that there's much substance in Poltergeist, either. It's full of hokum about the afterlife and exploitation of some elementary terrors, but not much else that would ever make me want to think about it, let alone watch it again.

Il Mugello per Pecco Bagnaia rimane per il momento un suo feudo inattaccabile. Dopo le vittorie nel 2022 e della doppietta nel 2023 (gare del sabato e della domenica), ecco che arriva anche l'affermazione nella gara sprint di oggi. Una partenza perfetta dalla seconda casella della griglia brucia al via il suo rivale Jorge Martin scattato dalla pole position prende la testa della corsa e non la molla fino alla bandiera a scacchi. Una vero e proprio dominio accompagnato dal tifo speciale di un pubblico speciale come solo quello italiano, e in particolare del Mugello sa essere. Perché se fino a qualche anno fa le colline dell'autodromo del Mugello erano le inevitabilmente colorate del giallo di Valentino Rossi (oggi presente in circuito per dispensare gli ultimi consigli ai sui ragazzi della VR46 Riders academy), adesso il colore predominante è senza dubbio il rosso Ducati. Non per niente la casa di Borgo Panigale quest'anno ha raddoppiato le tribune, aggiungendo a quella storica del Correntaio, una parte di quella centrale davanti ai box. ''Vincere di nuovo qui è davvero incredibile e poi davanti a questo pubblico. Io li amo! Mi sono goduto ogni giro - ha raccontato Bagnaia -. La moto funziona perfettamente domani sarà dura, ma concludere una gara sprint è sempre positivo. La motivazione qui è molto alta perché il pubblico è fantastico e poi ascoltare l'inno cantato così da tutti (a cappella, ndr) è una cosa che mi ha emozionato molto". On April 1st, 1924, I began to serve my sentence of detention in the Fortress of Landsberg am Lech, following the verdict of the Munich People's Court of that time. After years of uninterrupted labour it was now possible for the first time to begin a work which many had asked for and which I myself felt would be profitable for the Movement. So I decided to devote two volumes to a description not only of the aims of our Movement but also of its development. There is more to be learned from this than from any purely doctrinaire treatise. This has also given me the opportunity of describing my own development in so far as such a description is necessary to the understanding of the first as well as the second volume and to destroy the legendary fabrications which the Jewish Press have circulated about me. In this work I turn not to strangers but to those followers of the Movement whose hearts belong to it and who wish to study it more profoundly. I know that fewer people are won over by the written word than by the spoken word and that every great movement on this earth owes its growth to great speakers and not to great writers. Nevertheless, in order to produce more equality and uniformity in the defence of any doctrine, its fundamental principles must be committed to writing.
