Marius Appreciation Week Day 5: "Ode to Botticelli"

I made this years ago based off the Botticelli painting "Birth of Venus," and when I saw that one of the prompts today was "Ode to Botticelli," I knew I just had to drag it out of mothballs again.

It's a very Botticelli take on the "birth" of Amadeo, specifically the moment when he emerged from the ocean after cleaning up, and Marius ran to him with a cloak.

Day 7 - Draw on His Skin

“Your line work always has been terrible,” Marius observed, gazing from critical, narrowed eyes.

“Shhh,” Armand said impatiently. He added another line, linking two of the others. It was the letter ‘A’—the first initial of his name—beside the ‘M’ Marius had carved before passing the medical grade scalpel.

The two of them used Daniel’s back as a canvas, in particular the skin of his right shoulder blade.

Beneath their attention, Daniel sighed at the sensation of the last line Armand drew underneath both initials.

The marks wouldn’t last into the following night.

But, tonight? Daniel belonged to them.

Marius Week - Day 1 - Father

"Big Boy" on AO3

Six-year-old Marius’s little bare feet went pitter-patter on the cold tile floor as he rubbed at his blue eyes with one chubby hand. He was following the sound of voices, of his father’s deep, booming laughter calling to him from the other room.

“Why aren’t you in bed, boy?” his father asked as he waddled into the circle of reclining men drinking wine and playing tali. The dice had clattered at his feet, and one of his father’s friends tallied up the score as the little boy said, “I want to play with you.”

“You should be sleeping, Marius. It’s late.”

“Ah, let him sit with us for a bit,” one man said. “The kid just wants to feel included. He looks up to you, you know.”

“Come here, Marius,” his father said, and the child obeyed the summons, giving a small “Whee!” as he was lifted up into his father’s lap. He reached for his father’s cup, but the man held it up out of his reach, saying, “Sorry, that’s not for you. Not until you’re older.”

Marius waited a few moments, then said, “I’m older now.”

The circle of men erupted into boisterous laughter. “That you are,” his father pinched his cheek with a smile. “But still not old enough yet. Not tonight, child.”

“Dammit, I got the dog!”

“Don’t curse in front of my son,” the man scolded.

“Sorry,” said his friend sheepishly. “Bad roll.”

“There’s still hope, one of us could get something even worse,” a third laughed.

“My turn,” Marius’s father said. “Give me the dice.”

“May I?” the little boy asked timidly. 

“Here,” he smiled, letting his son roll.

The little stones clattered on the floor, and he read them out as they shuddered to a stop: “Six, four, three, one.”

“Good job, Marius,” his father smiled, and one of the friends cried out, “The boy rolled a Venus? Oh, come on!”

“You won the game, child,” Marius’s father collected his prize, fishing out a single small coin to present to his son. “Congratulations.”

Marius took the money with all the wide-eyed wonder and glee that only a small child can achieve, thanking his father in a small voice.

“You’re a big boy, you’ve won your first game of tali,” his father smiled. “Why don’t you head off to bed now? I’ll see you in the morning, all right?”

“Good night,” Marius sighed, allowing his father to kiss him goodnight and sliding off of his lap.

He would treasure that one little coin forever.

Day 1 - Father

It wasn’t daybreak yet, but it would be soon. The room Daniel was asleep in had windows to the outside. Marius shook his head indulgently. Crossed the room. For a moment, he just watched the sleeping boy, still new enough in the blood that his unconscious chest rose and fell with the habit of breath it no longer needed to take.

And then Marius kissed Daniel on the forehead. This miraculous child of his own child, who Marius had never thought to wish for. Under his guardianship all the same.

Marius would take care of him, no matter what came.
