Picker could not pull her eyes from the man. He sat hunched over, on a chair that had yet to find a table, still clutching in his hands the small rag of tattered cloth on which something had been written. The alchemist had done all he could to return life to what had been a mostly destroyed, desiccated body, and Baruk's talents had been stretched to their limits - there was no doubt of that.
She knew of him, of course. They all did. They all knew, as well, where he had come from.
He spoke not a word. Had not since the resurrection. No physical flaw kept him from finding his voice, Baruk had insisted.
The Imperial Historian had fallen silent. No-one knew why.
(...)
"Sure," Spindle snapped, "a story to break our hearts all over again! What's the value in that?"
A rough, broken voice replied, "There is value."
Everyone fell silent, turned to Duiker.
The Imperial Historian had looked up, was studying them with dark eyes. "Value. Yes. I think, much value. But not yours, soldiers. Not yet. Too soon for you. Too soon."
"Perhaps," Baruk murmured, "perhaps you are right in that. We ask too much-"
"Of them. Yes." The old man looked down once more at the cloth in his hands.
The silence stretched.
Duiker made no move.
Picker began to turn back to her companions - when the man began speaking. "Very well, permit me, if you will, on this night. To break your hearts once more. This is the story of the Chain of Dogs. Of Coltaine of the Crow Clan, newly come Fist to the 7th Army..."

Reading deadhouse gates and I feel like Felisin is kinda getting the short end of the stick here. She's a teenage noble girl, who's sister betrayed her, and she trauma bonds with a handled ex-priest and a thug. She pretty much has like a day of being chained up during a plague holiday, then through a riot with blood and gore and violence abounding. Then they are on a ship and the only way to not get tied up in the bowels where you rot or drown is for her to trade herself and she does so because teen girl trying to survive and the two dudes she trauma bonded with. Get to the mines and she gets picked quickly by a slave who is over the other slaves and she once again uses her body to get safetly and aid for herself and her companions (it's all she has) cue said companions treating her like shit and looking down on her for doing so. Also being with guy hurts like hell, and starts trading her to friends and her life is shit but she still thinks she's accomplishing something...then guy gets her hooked on a drug and tries to dump her once she's inevitably hooked. Her companions even think to potentially abandon her because she "seems to have made herself a paradise" like she had any choice? She was trying to have some control but she was a damn kid with no real support from either of you. Then she gets told by them later that "oh your efforts were pointless we got stuff for ourselves, just fel to bad to tell you you were suffering for nothing". Like no wonder this poor girl becomes so acidic and hate filled.

I'm pretty close to tapping out of berserk - a pretty large section of the disturbing imagery it uses is a type I'm really not good with (yk like wet, fleshy etc. other stuff can disturb me worse but nothing will make me put down something more than that) - but I don't want to just completely drop it yet. maybe I should read something lighter as a palate cleanser first.

Rereading Malazan Book of the Fallen for probably the fifth time...
"This city was dead long before the sea dried up," Fiddler said, resuming his climb.
Crokus called up after him, "How do you know?"
"Because everything's water-worn, lad. Waves crumbled this sea wall. Century after century of waves. I grew up in a port city, remember. I've seen what water can do. The Emperor had Malaz Bay dredged before the Imperial piers were built-revealed old sea walls and the like." Reaching the top, he paused to catch his breath. "Showed everyone that Malaz City's older than anybody'd realized."
"And that the sea levels have risen since," Mappo observed.
Fascinating to see how a major plot-point of Witness (the new series) was being casually built up as early as book 2 of MBotF - the melting of the Jaghut ice. And perfect of course, that it is Mappo who brings it up: of the group, he's the only one who would have been in a position to know this.
One thing I truly love about this series is the extent to which the world feels lived in. People have lived in the lands for hundreds of thousands of years, and not as static occupiers, but have endured climate change, environmental collapse, invasions, migrations, cultural movements, and political upheavals. Nobody does longue durée quite like Steven Erickson.
He's also an author who cares about subsistence strategies and the way geography shapes human patterns. The major cities emerge in places where water transport and farmland intersect. Plains nomads have pastoral animals apart from horses, plus working dogs, women play key roles in subsistence, and they have distinct material culture in dress and decoration. (As opposed to certain other authors, cf. Bret Devereaux's Dothraki write up). Environmental changes and human movement force new strategies; pretty much every group in the Malazan world is in some kind of flux or process of change outside of the actual plot, and have diverse responses to these pressures in terms of culture and values.
For all that these books can be very dense, I also appreciate Erikson's loving indulgence toward the reader. Yes, it would be funny if a small spoilt lapdog joined a pack of war dogs: so we will have a series of vignettes describing this in the background of real events. Yes, it is very funny to picture a bunch of capering monkeys mocking the High Priest of Shadow and his broom nonsense, so we will get a series of slapstick set pieces again in the background. Characters like Kruppe and Iskaral Pust get to chew the scenery, etc.

Can you tell me about Fitzloved?
"OH MY GOSH, AM I ABOUT TO INTRODUCE YOU TAYLOR SWIFT?!"
that's what i first meme when i saw your lovely ask! hahahah
Tumblr media
Introductions
So its a fandom based on the epic fantasy series that follows for the most part, 2 soulmates, from their childhood all the way to their older years as they grow from friendship, partners to lovers. And I have to admit, the way it's written is almost euphoric. It's utterly lyrical.
So introductions now put aside, 'Fitzloved' is the ship name for "Beloved" (one of his many names) name of the characters and "Fitz". They are the two ongoing protagonists in one of the most respect and wonderful high fantasy series ever created, Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb. They are the main couple shall we say that span the 16 book series. I think a lot describe it as the "mona lisa of fantasy series" within the genre. It's aesthetic is very much evermore meets folklore meets Merlin. Its veryyyyy cozy fantasy and perfect for the season but also the Fall/winter.
The big 5 writers of fantasy rn i have been told are: Brandon's, Robin Hobb's, GRRM (Although he's lost a lot of respect in the community because of his insane hiatus!), Steven Erickson's (Malazan series) and Joe Abercrombie. While you will see with the Cosmere, Brandon is very much straight to the point, prioritises fights, magic system building and very cohesive ensamble casts. Unlike her peers, Robin Hobb on the other hand, is a delicacy. A slowly made dessert that has sweet and salty tastes if you will. And another defining feature is that her series does not involve a massive war at the epicentre of the fantasy plot, which ironically is rare in high fantasy now a days.
Of Cats and Closed Doors by @tragediegh
HOWEVER. The WAY in which i was introduced to this series is kind of dumb and silly, i.e. very me lol. i stumbled across a fiction on ao3 under 'in a the cabin era way' tag and stumbled across @tragediegh's soul-binding, amazing wonderful fiction called Of Cats and Closed Doors that is still ongoing and she updates mostly weekly! At first, not joking i thought it was an original work, but only well into crying, loving, reading, laughing, did i realise when i looked better at the tags it was actually based on ROTE lol. I was new to ao3 that's my only defence :P
And what @tragediegh and Hobb are doing probably tell from my handle, is make literally my roman empire. Like I reread chapters everyday before going to sleep. It's fr fr my safe space. and what i love is the maturity in which they both write, as they create stakes in different ways. She creates a very tangible atmosphere, a world you can touch, the foods cooked, how they smell, and what the character's rely on. From banquet halls, to the wood carvings the Fool leaves behind, the well lit fireplaces, mugs of ale and coffee on the table, through jewels adorned, to how the dragons gleaming like jewels in the sky… it's simply amazing. You get me. There is NEVER a moment where you feel like it's a slog or dull moment. Like I did sometimes while reading the Stormlight Archive or Outlander (those books in their defence, are longer individually).
And like I said, the thing I LOVE the most with how they make us and fall in love with Fool (one of the protagonists) through the eyes of naive and a socially sometimes challenged Fitz. Fitz himself, is the most passionate, handsome, humble hero i've ever read. He is a bastard prince who from day 0 was neglected, abused, unwanted, un-named, manipulated, gaslit just all around most traumatised character one could read. Which most people end up overlooking and resenting bc he is riddled with insecurities (despite him being a hotttie hot chiseled smokie pie that everyone wants to cuffff) and developed unhealthy copying mechanisms that can effect the readability of the main series. Which is entirely relatable. I strongly believe the hero of Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson that everybody loves, is heavily inspired by Fitz in ROTE. In fact I think Brandon said it was one of his fav series.
But really, the masterpiece of this world is obviously the Fool. When I look at the other characters, its a bit like watching a glorious puppet show - I can see how the strings are moving and what the puppets are made of…But not so with the Fool, he is an infinite mystery and creating a character like that is something I`ll never be able to get out of my head. he is other worldly. Put Tolkien fae and beautiful faeries to shame with his grace, elegance, mysticism. His story with Fitz (the other main character) with that @tragediegh and Hobb are doing imo is one of the greatest love stories of all time.
Gender Identity
And I think also, Fool (also known as Beloved to a special someone 😉) is a lgbtq+ individual, and their identity and how they chose to present and address themselves daily (and not address it!) plays a massive role in the ROTE/OCACD overall. It extremely realistic, how it's writen, where for the most part some characters are confused, don't know how to navigate the topic. Which isn't helped by how private and mysterious the Fool remains. But for the most part, is heart warming, as the gender fluidity of the Fool is openly accepted by his mate (YES MATE) with open arms as he accepts it, and it's got me CRYINGGGG as i type this fr....! These characters were created pre-2000's, which just goes to show how timeless these gender questions and acceptances really are i think!
Music
CANON FOR ME swiftie songs that are FOR fitzloved to get a feel r:
ur loosing me
my tears ricochet
invisible string
stay don't go
the lakes
mastermind (YASSS beloved go manipulate ur boy fitzieee ily)
dress (as of chapter 48 and beyond hopefully alkdfjalkdjfj)
and Fitz's song for me for ever will be:
i see fire live and in session by ed sherran (i just feel the literal passion that fitz has through this song not to mention the howl XD)
Conclusion
So yeah, I cannot recommend enough this ongoing story and series to you.
TLDR: Fitzloved is a ship i read myself to sleep every night and cry about how amazing they are XD
Feel free to ask any more questions about them or even my favourite artists that do ROTE work bc ngl this post was 2x as long as i included artistic work but it was getting too long so i decided to leave that for a more specific ask :)) As you can tell i can just dedicate entire evenings singing from the top of these crusty english rooftops how amazing and life changing these two silly beans are. I hope this was enough of a good overview of my love for them and why! :)) Hopefully one day you will give it a go, and i swear your life will be changed for ever ! <333

Tbr for the next 3 months if I'm being honest
Crescent City (currently reading at 2 pages a week, experiencing brain decomposition in real time)
Leviathan Wakes (I never talk about it but the expanse is one of the best TV shows ever made in the history of writing)
Memories of Ice (Malazan my beloved I am ready to be consumed by you)
Babel (I dnf'd poppy war like 7 pages in, I will try it another time, hopefully this gets me on the Kuang train)
Ninth House (comfort reread, except I explicitly had a severe reaction to one scene - not the literal shit eating, surprisingly - and I think the ending genuinely knocks 2 stars off so why is it a comfort read)

Random beef I have with strangers on the internet and their book recommendations:
I keep seeing this tendency of people to hype up incredibly long epic fantasy series (the likes of the Stormlight Archives and Malazan where each book is over 700 pages and the series stretch out to be 2-3 times longer than the Bible) as the quintessential fantasy must-reads for anyone who enjoys the genre, and then caveat that they have a high barrier to entry because they're "complex," but that if you get through the first 500+ pages of each book then it totally pays off and is worth it.
And I just... man, the issue isn't that they're complex. It isn't even that they're long. I've read and loved Worm, which is significantly longer than the entirety of the Malazan series. The issue is that I am reading fantasy books for entertainment and I don't want to have to slog through the equivalent of the first two Harry Potter novels if they were dry as burnt toast before it actually gets good, and then repeat that ad nauseum for each book until I've trudged my way through five to seven bricks that make my latent tendonitis deeply relieved to own a Kindle when I could go read Terry Pratchett instead.
Anyway, that's my random thing to complain about for today.

Quote
"Children are dying." Lull nodded. "That's a succinct summary of humankind, I'd say. Who needs tomes and volumes of history? Children are dying. The injustices of the world hide in those three words."

Deadhouse Gates - Steven Erikson
Malazan Book of the Fallen Book 2
Read: Aug 2023
So this book was much more...accessible? I think it was just that, having read the first book, I was more used to a) the world of Malazan; and b) Erikson's writing. I also spent a lot of time on wikis looking things up when I read the first one so I came with more knowledge. In any case having more context(?) going in, I enjoyed this book considerably more than I did the first one. I guess it could also be that Erikson had gotten better at writing book to book. I'm sure Erikson did improve actually (I really can't see how you could not writing this much), but how much is hard to judge for me. All this is beside the point I will say. I enjoyed it a lot. And it really made me interested in reading more, so in that aspect it was a grand success.
There are a lot of moving parts in this book and they don't all come together at the end like one would expect. So that might be hard for some people. Personally my least favourite thing in this book is one of the characters. She is, quite frankly, despicable. She's had a very rough go of it, so you can understand why, but truly I couldn't stand it any time she was on the page. For the most part however there are lots of cool and interesting things that happen in here so I had fun reading it.

Two Asks, Two Answers
Thank you so much @naryaflame and @thenookienostradamus 🤗
1.Three ships?
@naryaflameI see your Vanessa/Mina from Penny Dreadful and I’d like to propose Vanessa/Catriona (who should have been in the series more or entered it earlier).
Also, moving outside the Tolkien fandom once more:
Deth and Morgon from the Riddle Master Trilogy by  Patricia McKillip and
Anomander Rake and Silchas Ruin from the Malazan Book of the Fallen.
2. First ever ship?
Due to the chronological order of reading, Fëanor and Fingolfin in the Silmarillion.
3. Last song?
Freed from Desire by Gala on Heart Dance.
4. Last movie?
I’ve not watched a movie in years. I tend to watch series.
