TV: La Ville dont le prince est un enfant (1997)

No es la primera adaptación de la pieza teatral “La Ville dont le prince est un enfant” (1951), escrita por el dramaturgo francés Henry de Montherlant. El título original, que se traduciría como “La villa donde el príncipe es un niño”, refiere a una cita bíblica del Libro del Eclesiastés (más precisamente Ec. 10:16, que afirma “Ay de ti, tierra, cuando tu rey es muchacho, y tus príncipes comen de mañana!”). El telefilme, conocido en el mundo anglosajón como “The Fire That Burns”, fue dirigido por Christophe Malavoy, que también cumple aquí un rol actoral.

Malavoy interpreta al Abad of Pradts, uno de los religiosos que está a cargo de un internado francés en años previos a la Segunda Guerra Mundial. El hombre tiene entre sus favoritos a Serge Souplier (Clément van den Bergh), un dulce niño de once años a quien le permite todo y lo protege de la rigurosidad de las reglas. Casi como un padre de verdad. Casi.

Lo que al abad le molesta, y mucho, es la “amistad particular” (término que en este blog ya conocemos desde la reseña de la película titulada, específicamente, “Les amitiés particulières”; su mención no es azarosa pues esta obra tiene algunos puntos en común con aquella) que el pequeñín mantiene con André Sevrais (Naël Marandin), un muchacho que le lleva cinco años. La relación es inequívocamente gay, aunque sumida en la ternura esperable que la edad de Souplier requiere. Misteriosamente, el religioso les concede a esta amistad de mala fama (ambos tenía prohibido el verse siquiera) una oportunidad para reencauzar sus afectos en libertad. O al menos eso creen.

James Malavoy’s performance in Split is probably in my top ten favorite of all time, and because of the way they are presented the roles are difficult to compare, but Tom Holland’s performance is definitely growing as the episodes progress.
