Want to help fund a Pride festival in a tiny Welsh town? 🏳️‍🌈
We're Machynlleth and we're small but queerly dense, so the goal is small but impactful, which means it's super easy and satisfying to support a significant amount!

Machynlleth. Lomo LC-A. Truprint 200.
Machynlleth is another town I used to pass through as a child passenger and wish I could get out and explore. The giant clocktower (for which the foundation stone was laid in 1874) is a symbol of the town. It was undergoing maintenance when on the day I visited.
Nowadays Machynlleth is home to many "hippy types" (as one older native described them to me a few years ago.) I could not resist stopping for a coffee and a walk.

The last couple of days I spent In Machynlleth included a visit to the world renowned Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT). CAT has been a showcase for sustainable living for nearly 50 years and was built on an abandoned mine site to show just what we can actually achieve if we really want to if we are serious anout healing our planet. I absolutely loved it and got some fabulous ideas including some clever insect hotels made from old tyres.
I also managed to find the local community garden a couple of hours before I got on the train and was lucky enough to find the garden coordinator Angela and one of the volunteers Geraint on site! How lucky is that! We had a cuppa and a great chat about their gorgeous garden and what they get up to there. Thanks to both of you for making time for an unexpected visitor 😄

Guys I spoke to Mike Wozniak today! I was at the Three Bean Salad live show at Machynlleth, and me and the gang got there super early, so we were in the front row. About half way through (after the inevitable rambling intro) they asked if someone in the front row would ring the bell at 5 minutes to go, and Mike sort of leaned over and held the bell out, and the girl next to me didn’t want to take it so I took it from him. They asked if I wanted to use that normal bell or the small decorative bell they brought to LPF last year, which was very hard to hear, and I said no to that one for that reason. Then Mike asked me if I was more of a “Wozniak or a Paker in terms of their time keeping skills,” and I said I was “definitely more of a Wozniak”. They asked if I would be okay with keeping time (Mike had already spotted my watch) and I said yeah, I could set a timer so it rang at the right time. I enjoyed the show, it was hilarious as all their shows are, but I was a little nervous that I’d ring the bell by accident, so I kept it clamped between my knees, but my legs kept shaking, so I held it from then on! The topic was Cheese, and they ended up talking about milking sheep (naturally) and the lady one away from me in the front row had a lot of expertise, and the Beans were asking a lot of questions, so when the timer rang, I didn’t ring the bell straight away, but held on until there was a natural pause, rang the bell and caught Mike and Ben’s eye at the same time, and said that it was time. As they had started late they questioned whether I had the right timing (very gently), and I explained that I had added 3 or 4 minutes to the 25 minute timer I had set, so it was half an hour since they asked me to keep time. They seem satisfied with this. However, Henry naturally had an extra section where he gave advice using his new Crab Book (the section was called various things, but I remember most distinctly the name “Crabatha Christie”), so the show went on for another 20 minutes anyway 😂 But at the very end as they were saying goodbye I caught Mike’s eye so I could hand the bell back to him, he took it from me, rang it, and popped it back on the table, and they left. What a day!

Would you mind talking about the vibes in Aberystwyth? Like the university and the town and all that jazz?
Vibes: immaculate
I'm out of date on the uni now - this September marks twenty years since I first went, so there will be differences by now. But I did find it a very good uni in terms of student life and facilities, both academic and otherwise. Many good clubs and societies, a lively SU, etc
HOWEVER the town is fantastic. It's a bit of an odd one, in that the character changes dramatically between term-time and holidays - students make up something like two thirds of the population, so it's much quieter and much Welsher once they've all gone home. But even with the students, it's something like 13,000 people? Small - you can walk across it in half an hour, like. Which means it's big enough to have all the shops you need and a truly astonishing number of pubs, but small enough to still retain its Victorian seaside resort charm
Oh yeah, okay, it has:
TWO BEACHES! One is grit sand/shingle, the other is powder sand
A pier with MANY STARLING MURMURATIONS
The remains of a CASTLE
The National Library of Wales (respectful silence)
An IRON AGE HILLFORT which you can walk to
A Victorian funicular that still works which is a CLIFF RAILWAY
A CAMERA OBSCURA on said cliff and also frisbee golf. Why they thought frisbees and windy clifftops were a perfect pairing I do not know
DELIGHTFUL WOODS
There's technically TWO Cinemas but one is the Arts Centre (so shows a mix of blockbuster releases and art house things with intermittent reliability) and the other is a one-screen wonder that can only show films for about two weeks at a time, it's great
WALES COASTAL PATH ACCESS did you know you can walk the entire coast of Wales?
A STEAM TRAIN (sit on the left of the way out, the right on the way back)
Limited chain stores! Most shops in town are local-owned, and usually Welsh speaking
Also a bit of a hippy vibe, albeit not as much as Machynlleth up the road
Over fifty pubs and clubs. This is an unfeasible number for the population size

A hyperlocal accessibility petition
Petition link: Machynlleth Co-op, please reopen your front door!
This Co-op supermarket in Powys (Mid-Wales, UK) originally closed the front door in favour of using only the back door (by the car park) at the start of the pandemic, so that they could control the number of people coming into the store more easily and prevent overcrowding, which does make sense.
I have recently learned that they have decided to keep the front door closed permanently. The reason the staff gave me is that it helps to... prevent shoplifting??? (I'm not sure that this is a good solution to the problem.)
Here's the Co-op layout:
Tumblr media
Before they closed the front door, going to the shops was easy peasy as a pedestrian, it was like this:
Tumblr media
But now the front door and the front till are permanently (but not irreversibly) closed, like so:
Tumblr media
Which means you have to walk/roll all the way around the outside of the supermarket TWICE:
Tumblr media
As a part-time wheelchair user with mobility issues and no car, this SUUUUUCCCCCKKKKKS. I can imagine that elderly people and parents pushing prams are also having a worse time. I am so upset that they are prioritising drivers over disabled people and parents.
Additionally, and if you're a wheelchair user you know how alarming this is, the corner at the front of the Co-op has a pavement that slopes alarmingly in two directions, including towards the road where cars are turning to get into the car park, and there is no pavement. (There are lanes for pedestrians but, again, there is no pavement.) That corner is also scattered with BOLLARDS, which are horrible to navigate on a weirdly sloped pavement next to a road:
Tumblr media
It's a little bit dangerous as a wheelchair user, and it's tricky for people on mobility scooters, which are a bit less manoeuverable.
As you can see, they've even put planters in front of the doors to show how closed those front doors are. 😭/😡
Please consider signing this petition: Machynlleth Co-op, please reopen your front door! You can sign from anywhere in the world.
I feel that it's worth noting that a petition aimed at a very small-scale issue like this is a lot more likely to be successful, but if you know anyone who lives in Wales and especially who lives in the top end of Powys, sharing this petition link with them could be particularly influential: https://www.change.org/MachCoopFrontDoor
If you're on Twitter you could also RT this tweet.
Thank you so much for your time!

🎑 spinning records with dee dee: day 1 🎑
‘Bron-Yr-Aur’ demo’s — recorded at Bron-Yr-Aur cottage, Spring 1970
‘Bron-Yr-Aur’ got its official release on 24 February 1975 as part of the Physical Graffiti double album. But as we know, its origins can be traced way back to spring 1970, when after an exhausting tour of the US, Page and Plant retreated to a small 18th-century cottage on the outskirts of Machynlleth, in Montgomeryshire, mid-Wales. The cottage’s name is Welsh for “breast of the gold” or “golden hill”.
These demo’s document the track’s first days of life, and are a wonderful time machine back to easier days. The first demo “Acoustic Jam” is particularly dear to me as the laughter of a child – most likely Robert and Maureen Plant’s then 18-month-old baby daughter, Carmen – can be heard throughout the recording, with chatting voices and Plant’s singing also making brief appearances above the acoustic guitar’s gentle melody.

Hanif Abdurraqib's essay is so carefuly woven. The whole series of Lost Notes on 1980 looks great. I have only listen to this post. It moved me.
My memory seems unrealible, sometimes I check things out. Last Tuesday I was searching for the reports of the announcement that Nelson Mandela would be released from prison in February of 1990 because I remember.
In 1990 I had graduated and got my teaching credentials. I was doing an internship at an environmental learning center in western Pennsylvania. And I had signed up for a big job fair across the state near Philadelphia. At the environmental center, the night before the job fair the environmental center was hosting Damian Randle who had founded Green Teacher Magazine. I was especially excided to meet him because of his connection with Centre For Alternative Technolgy near Machynlleth Wales.
I stayed for Randle's presentation and drove the night through to the job fair. In my gut I knew teaching wasn't for me, but it still took a while for that realization to dawn on me. So I suffered bleary-eyed through multiple interviews at the job fair. I didn't click with anybody there. Leaving the conference center and retriving my car I turned on the radio as I tried to get my bearings. The news was that Nelson Mandela would be released from prsion. I was a bit incredulous, but the news shot electricity through my body.
There are reasons to hope and the struggle continues.

Volunteering at the Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth, Wales back in 2003. It’s a place of hope that I always love going back to. A former slate quarry reclaimed as gardens, an educational and demonstration centre. Recently the focus has shifted from a 1990s attempt to inspire the general public and children with interactive displays (the sorts of things that captivated me) to a higher education institution with professional qualifications. Maybe that will have more success and impact overall.
