~Lupin Lost Media~
Toshimichi Ohkawa (writer for lupin iii: sweet lost nights; Green vs Red; Part 3) and franchise vet Junichi Lioka had a secret pitch with TMS about a new lupin the third series set during the 1920s-1930s era America back in the early 90s.
LUPIN THE THIRD: ONCE UPON A TIME.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Concept art and character design by Toshihiko Masuda)
The series was set during the years Babe Ruth and AL Capones fame were at their hight, Having the gang scheme up heists around new York while zenigata was set to track down lupin and his cohorts with the newly established F.B.I
Only 3 concept episodes were written
"The Miracle Of Bambino"
"The Man Who Killed Dillinger"
"Angel With Broken Wings" (which would have had lupin meet a female pilot who crashed during her transatlantic flight)
Sadly, the series never got the green light to go into production and remained a secret until today.

Most of us know by this point that the Lupin III manga series doesn't particularly have the best reputation, but why is that?
Is it simply because of the content itself, or is there more behind it?
It is August 10th, the 56th anniversary of the og manga, and I will be exploring the causes of the manga's poor reputation in the Lupin community with as most detail as I can try to be.
Tumblr media
Bluntly put, I will not hide the fact that the manga series as a whole contains extremely problematic elements. All three series, OG manga, New Adventures, and Shin Lupin III all contain instance of Lupin and other characters raping and sexually assaulting women.
It certainly gets better as the series goes on. At the last three major arcs of Shin Lupin III, Lupin becomes almost entirely sexless, with some instances of plain pervertedness. However, it is not an issue that cannot be glossed over and it is the by far biggest burden that this series has to carry over its 56 years of existence.
OG manga is the biggest culprit of this, barely two chapter goes by without an instance of Lupin pulling his sexual advances onto random women and succeeding. Those moments of the manga are extremely gross and uncomfortable- and it really makes our protagonist extremely unlikeable, which brings me to my next point:
The fact that the OG manga is the first of the three manga series contribute heavily to its poor reputation.
Tumblr media
"Aiee!! No way that the biggest manga preacher in tumblr is slandering the manga! Isn't that out of character!?"
It quite is, luckily I can think. As someone who has spent about 5 months reviewing almost all of the chapters, I can say that I know quite a bit about what it does right and what it does wrong... and it sadly does many things wrong.
Of course, the main thing is the sexual violence, but it is also the series with the least interaction between each member of the Lupin gang, who are characters people already come to really like. Lacking that element takes away what many people regard to be the best part about the series.
The beginning chapters of the og manga are also poorly paced. A bunch of things are going on, and the panelling certainly makes it hard to follow as well.
And to even add to the original issue, the english translation provided by Tokyopop also fucked everything up too!! Many of the extreme dialogues that you come across, including ones that make jokes at Monkey Punch's expense, are done by Tokyopop. Tabbiewolf explains this much better than I can:
"Just remember: a LOT of the…more offensive stuff in the manga is from the TokyoPop translations. I’m not excusing ALL of it, mind you — it was the 1960s and this was an adventure/spy manga marketed at cisdudes, after all — but the script writer for the English version was extremely, uh, artistic, with his localization of the translation."
"it was the early 2000s, manga was trying to appeal specifically to people who didn’t read it: teenaged cisboys who watched South Park, basically ;) So a fair amount of the stuff was very much the new English script, NOT the creator ‘s original work! Some plots got changed entirely just because the Japanese slang from the time didn’t translate."
Tumblr media
First impressions matter, and the OG manga makes a very bad impression for people attempting to get into the manga series. Many readers are most likely taken back by how different it is from what they are used to, and they are definitely not going to like the problematic elements.
Those who still try to give it second chances are going to be met with disappointment when they find out these glaring issues are only partially fixed further into the series. Believing that it won't get better, they end up dropping the manga altogether and generalizing the rest of the manga series as depraved nonsense.
And I can't simply blame Monkey Punch for all these issues!! It was the first of what's to come, and he was not aware at the time just how big Lupin III would become in Japan and eventually worldwide. The og manga is very experimental, and you can tell he was only trying to figure out what works. I also cannot blame the people that dislike the manga. People naturally dislike something that is problematic and different.
Heck, most manga fans feel indifferent about the og manga as well, with the majority of them liking Shin Lupin III much better.
I have the statistic right here!!! It's not a lot of people, but there's an obvious majority choice here.
Tumblr media
(By the way, if you're enjoying reading this so far, you should totally join my Lupin III server ahem cough cough nudge nudge)
So not even the manga fans love the OG manga. In my opinion, I would definitely not recommend people to read that as their first Lupin manga either. It is the type of media that if you really love the source material in general, then it'd be ok to read.
It is quite a shame to say that the series that does a better job at getting people in the manga, is the third one of the bunch. Most people aren't going to know that however, and they end up reading something that is going to likely give a bad image of the manga.
Ok so I dont have a good segway to the second part of this post so have a panel.
Tumblr media
Now I'm gonna talk about how the fandom itself screw up it's reputation!!
(Before you get further I have to say that I have nothing against anime fans, if I do sound like I don't like them it's just sort of poor wording on my end)
Many fans of Lupin III start with the anime, if not probably all of them at this point. This causes a huge skew in public opinion, where those who are pre-exposed to the anime are probably going to view the manga as something lesser than its animated counterpart.
Tumblr media
This can be seen particularly in CloudConnection's video of his manga analysis, which is concerningly just a portion of this 18 minute video, but I'll look over that. The portions of the video where he analyzes the manga contain a large amount of negative opinions about it.
A lot of his points are very good, and a lot of them I agree with, like his issues with the rape and sexual assault and how its a good time capsule but definitely not something that people should start off with. But a rest of the points seem a bit unreasonable to make and rather biased, like how the characters feel inconsistent, the bad pacing, and really emphasizing how dark and grim the manga is (it is very goofy and nobody ever talks about that)
And I have to state- It's totally valid for someone to prefer one thing over the other, but my point is that when this opinion is overwhelmingly the majority, it is going to cause the general public's opinion to unfairly be against something, ignoring what it does good and pinning the focus on what it does bad.
That video example was very popular, and I know someone personally that got the wrong memo from it and hated the manga without reading it for a long time, so you can see how it can probably effect the rest of the people that viewed that video.
Tumblr media
So what can we learn from this?
We now understand that two of major reasons responsible for the manga's bad reputation is one: the unfortunate circumstance of the OG manga being the first series, and the overwhelming public opinion being unfairly skewed against it.
To wrap this up, I ask you to please give the manga a chance!! Read Shin Lupin first, and be aware of its flaws while also appreciating what it has contributed for the franchise and anime as a whole. I hope you enjoyed this little essay I wrote, and happy birthday Lupin III!

Lupin The Third 56th Anniversary!!! 🎊🎉
I drew the big image of Lupin on the right and the "56" last night, and put together a collage for the background of all of the drawings I've made of Lupin thus far (not counting the animations)!✨️🎨
______
On this day 56 years ago, Lupin III was first published in Weekly Manga Action!
The manga became an instant hit in Japan, and the series is still going on strong even today, having several manga series, comics, anime series, animated & live action movies, and video games!
It was among the first manga and anime series aimed towards adults, it's the first anime to use stereo audio, and series creator Monkey Punch was the ones who helped usher in the use of digital art and digital illustration.
Lupin III even inspired and was responsible for characters like TV reporter April O'Neal from the TMNT TV shows and films, Dr. Eggman & Rouge The Bat from Sonic The Hedgehog, Inspector Gadget which originally started from a Sci-Fi Lupin III spin off show that was planned (Lupin VIII), Persona 5, Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Aria the Scarlet Ammo and many more. Lupin III even inspired some of the stuff you see in Indiana Jones and the Tom Cruz Mission Impossible movies, including the iconic vault stunt from his first MI movie.
Lupin III is an iconic series, one that despite starting in the 1960's, manages to always stay relevant and epic, and always comes out on top no matter what time period it is. The main character himself even prides himself on that!
So Happy 56th Anniversary to the franchise!!!✨️💎
Anyways, sorry for rambling on for so long, and thank you very much for taking the time to read this! ^v^
_____________________
Do NOT use, edit or repost this, without my permission!!!
If you want to do either of those things, just ask me for permission to do so beforehand, and I’ll get back to you
Also here is the collage in the background

when my blog was created: this incarnation? my earliest post was apparently 23 may 2020, so we're coming up on that 4 year anniversary 😏 but the first standalone cherry blog was from 2016? the oldest muse on here to originate on tumblr (ciel) emerged in late 2011. the oldest oldest muse on here originated off-tumblr in like 2008/9 on gaiaonline (talking abt u, naux).
# of followers: i normally wouldn't answer this, but i will tell u now that it is 365 just because that's such a satisfying number? got a buddy here for every day of the year 😎 that's a lie tho bc the number is broken and doesn't really fluctuate no matter how many people i gain or lose LOL i'm pretty sure like 4/5 people on the list are inactive tho, so please help me make more friends
random fact: my bedroom is ridiculously girly, soft pinks and pale greys and whites with gold accents, loads of pillows and plushes and decorative doodads, but i myself dress almost entirely in black. it's a little like putting wednesday in enid's room. not quite sure what that says about me.
favourite food: the humble tuna sandwich. i'm counting lemonade as a food here, just so i can add it in. i like lemonade even more than i like tuna.

pronouns : she/they/any? idc abt labels and boxes, but it's weird that u're talking about me when i'm not there /:
favourite book series: howard the duck 😏 did you think i'd really make it to the end of this without mentioning him? this is also my chance to plug fly by night by frances hardinge, and its sequel, fly trap (or twilight robbery in the UK). there's also the monster blood tattoo trilogy by d.m. cornish that i desperately wish i'd held on to because it's apparently out of print now! my blood boils every time i remember. it would be remiss if i didn't mention a series of unfortunate events, just because i do think it was very influential for me. i'm about to reread the saga of darren shan/cirque du freak for the first time since middle school, so wish me luck 😤
favourite video game/s: god, fuckin...idk, tetris? roblox??? i'm not a gamer at all. i can't play anything unless i'm playing with a friend. that's a lie, i played baldgate3. the only thing i play is the sims 4. i'm trash
favourite subject: [scuttles around on all fours, twitching and foaming at the mouth] school bad! school BAD! (my three passions are history and fashion and film, but i don't love the academic system. Cs get degrees, etc. my own degree was in creative writing, and now i'm trapped in retail hell, so be smarter than me, kids! except also i hear even stem is useless these days? society is crumbling so bad, i—)
guys or girls: i prefer drawing guy faces and girl bodies. idk what u're getting at here
last time I cried: last night, conveniently
what I should be doing: taking out the trash, cooking up curry, cleaning the bathroom, polishing my spanish and diving into mandarin, writing, drawing, job hunting. continuing my goal of watching 365 movies this year. sweeping up the feathers of my cockatiel, galileo, because it's Moltin' Time. the usual 🤷‍♀️
favourite fandoms: i actually don't participate in fandom LOL i just lurk. chat about stuff in discord—DMs, not servers. i have so much art and music in my head, but i don't have the mobile dexterity and stamina for it anymore. maybe one day...

A new pachinko slot machine has been announced for Japan by company Heiwa, and it features the whole Lupin gang fighting against their long-time adversary, Inspector Zenigata!
Invitation from Zenigata (ルパン三世 銭形からの招待状) will be receiving a slow roll-out across Japan in celebration of the shows 25th anniversary of partnering up with slot manufacturer Heiwa. As always, it includes unique animation of the gang, this time modelled off of the red jacket TV specials from the late 2000s, including 2010s The Last Job. It also includes some scenes showcasing 3DCG character models, allowing for some dramatic 360-degree camera spins.

Didn't Wanna Feel Old in 2023? Sucks to be You!
Happy 2023 everybody! It's a new year meaning I've got new goals to meet. Goals like finally publishing something, setting up commissions so people can pay me to do what I love, cross-posting between my account here and on deviantART, summoning more kaijus just so they can play elaborate games of poker, y'know, all that good stuff. It also means the return of my 'list of things that have reached a milestone anniversary' list. However, it seems like I've been doing this for so long that these lists have in fact reached their own milestone. From what I could tell, this is the fifth year of my doing this, at least on deviantART. If that doesn't make you feel right from the gate, I present the following:

List of Lupin III Part 2 Episodes (that I liked enough to make my partner watch them)
Part 2 of Lupin III has Many Episodes, but overall I found it fun and charming (in a dated kind of way). Please be aware that this is a very old show, and there are still instances of racism/sexism/etc in these episodes (though the worst have not made this list).
I have decided to share the whole list of episodes I noted down to make Partner watch with me as I have been devouring the show entire, much like a snek, but I have also bolded a couple of my Extra Favorite ones.
I cannot speak to the quality of the dub versions, as I have only watched with Japanese audio and English subtitles. I don't think Part 2 is a bad place to start if you want to get into Lupin. It is a very silly show full of shenanigans, which has been bringing me a great deal of joy over the winter.
11 - "A Gift for the President" / "The Sleight Before Christmas" 12 - "The Great Chase in San Francisco" / "I Left My Mind in San Francisco" 20 - "Goemon's Revenge" / "The Last Mastery" 25 - "A Rose and a Pistol" / "Shot Through the Heart" 32 - "Lupin Dies Twice" / "Lupin the Interred" 41 - "Search for the Treasure of Princess Kaguya" / "Heroes and Vixens" 44 - "The Vanished Special Armored Truck" / "Lion, Cheatin' and Stealin'" 48 - "Lupin Laughs at the Alarm Bell" / "Vault Assault" 57 - "Computer or Lupin?" / "Alter-Ego Maniac" 58 - "The Face of Goodbye at the National Border" / "Gettin' Jigen with It" 61 - "The Flying Zantetsuken" / "The Yam Is Mightier Than the Sword" 66 - Order: Shoot to Kill!!" / "Beauty and the Deceased" 72 - A Skateboard Murder Mystery" / "You're Sapphired!" 79 - "The Lupin Funeral March" / "Baton Death March" 80 - "The Last Gift in Prison is Cup Ramen" / "Everybody Loves Ramen" 81 - "Fujiko, Men Are a Sorry Lot!" / "Fujiko, Men Are a Sorry Lot!" 82 - "Rescuing Pops" / "Hostage Rescue Operation: Daddio" 84 - "Leave the Revenge to Lupin" / "Leave the Revenge to Lupin" 98 - "The Day Pops Was Gone" / "The Day Without Daddio" 99 - "The Scattered Magnum" / "Fighting Jigen" 102 - "Lupin, Do You Like Chanel?" / "Lupin, Do You Like Chanel?" 110 - "Fujiko's Candid Photo" / "Sharp Shot! This is Fujiko" 112 - "Goemon's Close Call" / "Danger! Goemon" 116 - "When's the 108th Bell?" / "Has the Bells Rung 108 Times?" 129 - "In Jigen, I Saw the Gentleness of a Man's Soul" / "The Kindness Of Jigen is Seen" 134 - "The Climactic Lupin Arrest Operation" / "The Surrounded Summit Strategy" 137 - "The Magnificent Team-Play Operation" / "Team Work" 142 - "The Big Favorite Disappeared at the Grand Race" / "The Disappearing Favourite" 143 - "The Miami Bank Raid Anniversary" / "The Miami Bank" 145 - "Wings of Death - Albatross" / "Albatross: Wings of Death" 148 - "The Target Is 555 Meters" / "The Target is Five Hundred and Fifty Five Meters Away"
If you only watch one episode of Part 2 -- make it 145/Wings of Death- Albatross, but if you are going to watch more than one episode for the love of the gods don't watch that one first it will set your standards much too high for the rest of the show.
edit to add: a number of these episodes after 98 can be found on youtube! And in fact youtube has much better subtitling on their subbed episodes than crunchyroll, so I recommend watching them there instead if possible.

Kaiju Week in Review (October 30-November 5, 2022)
This week actually brought more news than I was expecting... and I was expecting a lot!
Tumblr media
Takashi Yamazaki will direct—or rather, has been directing—the next live-action Toho Godzilla film, which started shooting in March under the working title Blockbuster Monster Movie. (Gigant called it!) He also wrote the script and will supervise the visual effects, a level of control never before afforded a Godzilla director. Yamazaki previously directed the King of the Monsters in the cold open for Always: Sunset on Third Street 2 and the Godzilla the Ride: Giant Monsters Ultimate Battle attraction, but he's also been extremely prolific as a director of visually extravagant genre movies, including Returner, Space Battleship Yamato, the live-action Parasyte films, and Lupin III: The First.
Little is known about the story, save for the time period: early postwar Japan, specified in a casting call as 1945-47. That's rare territory for a Godzilla story. I believe Godzilla: Awakening is the only other example, and that was a globe-trotting adventure in which the Big G never set foot on Japanese soil. So it promises to be something truly fresh for his 69th anniversary. Nice.
Tumblr media
The main attraction of Toho's Godzilla Fest livestream was the event's third tokusatsu short, Fest Godzilla 3: Gigan Attacks. These things get better every year; compared to Godzilla vs. Hedorah, Gigan Attacks had a bigger set, a new suit for the enemy monster and a much nicer-looking suit for Godzilla, sharper fight choreography, and more intricate VFX. If they keep getting longer too, maybe Toho will accidentally make another tokusatsu feature by the 2030s.
For the next few days, you can watch it on YouTube here (starts at 6:57:00 and is followed by a ton of behind-the-scenes footage). After the archived stream gets banished, find it on archive.org.
Tumblr media
I kind of love when animation makes kaiju lighter and bouncier than they should be for the sake of slicker fight scenes, and the other Godzilla Fest short, Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex, certainly delivered on that front. And if you've always wanted Toho to revisit the Heisei continuity, there are a few hints that this Godzilla is Junior, including the long-overdue return of Megumi Odaka as the narrator. (As a Wikizilla bureaucrat, I am obligated to add that these are only hints, akin to the way IDW's Godzilla comics will sometimes allude to the films without officially being in continuity with them.) Assuming this is Junior, he certainly does his old man proud.
Tumblr media
An onslaught of new Movie Monster Series figures were revealed this week: Godzilla '84, Gamera '96, two Shin Ultraman variants, Zarab's Ultraman disguise, and Mefilas. A site called Awesome Collector also opened preorders for Manda '04, Baragon '65, Ebirah '66, Hedorah '04, Godzilla '04, and King Ghidorah '91, due in February or March 2023. No images for them yet, but they foretold the MMS Salunga figure in the past. Finally, Showcase Daikaiju claims that the Godziban versions of Rodan and Anguirus will be shipping out next month. I'm more excited for those than the ones we got total confirmation of, to be honest. Though the Godzilla '84 looks more on-model than my NECA...
Oh yeah, there's an S.H.MonsterArts of the original Gigan on the way too. Not my thing, but nice to see them remember the Showa era exists.
Tumblr media
Buried in a Hollywood Reporter article about Blockbuster Monster Movie is the revelation that Godzilla Island will be coming to the English Godzilla YouTube channel (GODZILLA OFFICIAL by TOHO) later this month. Yes, the one from the late 90s where Bandai toys portray all the monsters. This will be its first official English translation; as someone who's watched the whole thing raw, I'm excited to finally learn what the hell's happening in some of those story arcs. The special effects are the least wild part of the show, truly.
Tumblr media
Netflix released a full trailer for Troll which looks pretty spectacular; I did not realize the film had this much money to play with. Roar Uthaug (The Wave, the Tomb Raider remake) is the director. It's always nice to see another giant monster movie set in Europe—how many have there been since the glory days of Reptilicus, Konga, and Gorgo? Okay, maybe "Konga" and "glory days" don't belong anywhere near each other... the point stands.
Tumblr media
O'Shea Jackson Jr. has been writing the pilot script for a G-Team animated series with Toho Kingdom media relations director Chris Mirjahangir. (In case you forgot, that's Monarch's military branch, callously discarded in Godzilla vs. Kong like most of the world-building in King of the Monsters; Jackson played Barnes.) No story details yet, beyond plans to include Biollante and Gigan. Bear in mind this is far from a done deal; the strategy seems to be going public early to convince Toho and Legendary the demand is there.
Tumblr media
Fathom Events screenings of Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla grossed $335,000 from 727 theaters on Thursday, good for fifth place that day. Apart from the introduction by Chief Godzilla Officer Keiji Ota (who I hear was very wooden), Fathom included last year's Godzilla vs. Hedorah short and some behind-the-scenes footage of said short which I'm not sure has ever been released before. Thankfully, a couple people recorded that part.
The film itself had some frame rate issues, at least at certain theaters. The video quality also apparently dropped off whenever there were any English supers. The subtitles used the (superior) script from the old TriStar DVD, though a handful of typos suggested they were retyped. Still, people seemed thrilled at getting to catch a Toho Godzilla movie in theaters, and I can't blame them (G-Fest has spoiled me rotten).
Tumblr media
Evangelion Unit-01 has officially arrived in Godzilla Battle Line, with the Fourth Angel (called Sachiel in the original show) to follow mid-month. She's armed with a Gatling gun and a few neat abilities, like an AT field reducing the damage she takes while she's rushing and resistance to self-destructing units like Burning Godzilla and Zetton. Be forewarned that Shinji screams in agony whenever an Eva Leader loses a match. Battle Line also gave Kiryu an Evangelion skin—and the ability to evolve into the Modified version from Tokyo S.O.S. after being defeated twice in a match. Also, GigaBash released a teaser for their upcoming Godzilla DLC, and announced that three more Toho monsters would join the game as well. Be sure to feign surprise when they turn out to be King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla, and Mothra.
Tumblr media
I'll close with yet another plug for another kaiju obscurity brought to light by @spacehunter-m. This one's the 1958 German version of Godzilla Raids Again with English subtitles. It's a more straightforward dub than Gigantis; no banana oil, fire monsters, or unrelenting narration in this one. It also looks better than the HD transfer Toho has been trotting out for years, despite being in SD!
