Lucifer - Lucifer V
Lucifer is a band that makes occult rock cool again, and they’ve been at it for over a decade now, but they’ve been changing their sound over that time. This is their fifth album, entitled Lucifer V (each album is pretty much just the Roman Numeral), and on this one, they don’t switch up the formula too much. Their last three albums have been going in a 70s rock direction. The occult sound is still there, but instead of channeling Black Sabbath, Coven, or Sir Lord Baltimore, they go with Jethro Tull and Blue Oyster Cult. It’s still good, and their last album was pretty cool, but this one is sort of a return to form, albeit somewhat. This record attempts to go back to their really heavy debut, and there are a lot of “metal” moments there, especially riffs and solos that feel very Sabbath-inspired, but this album tries too hard to meet itself in the middle. For every song I really like and that is “heavier,” there are also more slow-moving and tedious 70s-inspired cuts that don’t really do anything they haven’t already done.
The thing is, this album is great. It’s executed well, the songs are written well, and the performances are top notch throughout the board. The problem is, they rely on what they’ve already done, and instead of leaning into one sound or another, they try to meet in the middle and it doesn’t quite work as well as they want. The songs are good, make no mistake, and if you want a good rock album, you’ll get it, but this album wants to be a hard-rock album and a proto metal album at once. It wants to be Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult, which is kind of what the band has been for the last decade, but they leaned into one sound or the other, they didn’t try to do both at the same time, and that’s what they do hear. I also wonder if this album would have more resonance if this album would have come out around Halloween. It may have more resonance around the fall, where this brand of occult rock shines better, but as it stands, this album is really good, I just wish it knew what it was trying to be, versus trying to meet fans in the middle with being a hard-rock and metal band at once. If they just picked one, and stuck with it, the album might have ended up better than it was, but to be fair, it’s already a good album.
