The most disturbing things portrayed in ACOTAR
Victim-blaming: Lucien tries to help Feyre and gets physically abused by Tamlin as a result. Feyre then proceeds to call him a dog despite Lucien doing everything he could in a difficult situation. And we're supposed to...support Feyre on this? And Rhysand throws around words like "can never forgive" man stfu you prick.
Sexual Assault: The most disturbing thing is not that Rhysand sexually assaulted Feyre. It's that he's never held accountable for this and never even apologizes at ANY point in the series. There are so many examples but this is the one that is the most disturbing.
Double Standards: We have Tamlin locking Feyre up for her own good being vilified, yet Rhysand is championed for locking Lucien and Nesta up in houses for their own good. Huh? WTF.
War Crimes: What Feyre did to the Spring Court, manipulating the sentries with the whole Ianthe thing and basically getting them killed, then weakening the Spring Court rulership which resulted in all those villagers in the Spring Court getting killed, then laying the Summer Court bare to Hybern as well, are nothing short of war crimes. And...instead of feeling regret, we have the main characters saying "Hybern's actions are their own." Like bitch what? Hybern wouldn't have been able to do shit if it wasn't for you! Have some damn accountability! And the fact that Tamlin and Tarquin are vilified for this never ceases to irk me.
Grooming: Rhysand groomed Feyre. He made excuses for everything he did with trauma, then sent Feyre out to do tasks for him like she's some kind of weapon he can use. WITHOUT giving her proper information, there is no choice. And everything he does is constantly explained away, until eventually Feyre becomes his trophy wife. Rhysand basically assigns Cassian to do the same for Nesta. I'm holding out hope that Elain will be saved from the Night Court.
The pregnancy debacle: the whole thing with the baby having wings and Rhysand withholding information from Feyre is just...disturbing. Idc if you're not telling her FoR hEr OwN gOoD, it is HER life at stake and she deserves to know. They didn't even try to shapeshift her to try and save her life? Like why is everybody seemingly more concerned about the baby than the mother? Disgusting. And why is Nesta vilified for being the only one to tell Feyre? She said it to hurt her, blah blah blah. She also wanted to show Feyre that their situations are similar. That they're BOTH being shit on by the Night Court. And when she's close to a breaking point...Nesta is forced to hike a mountain? That is physical abuse. Also, Rhysand being extremely territorial putting a shield over her and barely letting Feyre go anywhere is beyond weird.
Suicide baiting: What Rhysand did to Tamlin in ACOFAS is nothing short of suicide baiting. And...only Lucien seems to really be that concerned about it? Like...are you telling me I'm supposed to be supporting Rhysand after he basically told a depressed male to kill himself?
Segregation: Separating the Hewn City from Velaris IS segregation, no matter what excuse you try to come up with. You can't claim they're all shitty people, since your bestie Mor comes from the CoN. So, there are good people stuck in the CoN unable to get out of their torment because Rhysand decided that only certain individuals are allowed in Velaris.
Performance Feminism: Establishing laws to help women and not doing shit to enforce them is performance feminism. If he's as powerful as he says, he can 100% stop wing-cutting and r*pe. But, he's a goddamn virtue signaler so he doesn't fucking care. The thing is, SJM could've handled these topics in a much better way and it would've been fine. But she completely fucked shit up here and it's crazy that some people don't see it. Part of me is still waiting for the final book where she says, psych rhysand was the villain the whole time. If so, I'll take everything back.

my acotar unpopular opinions
taking this time to come out as an acotar reader. yes i've read all the books and i've spent way too much time thinking about it. i enjoy the books in the sense that i enjoy hating on many of the characters and loving a few of the others.
be forewarned inner circle fans. you will not like this.
rhysand is not a 'morally grey' character. he's a rapist and a groomer. he sexually assaulted feyre utm, he groomed her (reminder that she was 19 in acotar), and he withheld important medical information from her. 'you'll always have a choice' my ass.
nesta telling feyre about her pregnancy was not a bad thing. why do people act like it is? 'oh she did it to hurt feyre' hurt her by doing what? revealing the lies that her beloved husband had woven? revealing the fact that she'd die giving birth? the fact that rhysand told literally everybody but feyre?
mor is not the champion for women everyone thinks she is. this i will give to sjm it is truly impressive to make a character like women and still be a pick me. i'm not even going to go into her whole weird ass relationship with her dad (i still don't understand why she wouldn't just kill him. 'oh rhys needed the army' rhys is supposed to be the most powerful high lord ever. either admit he's a fucking loser or give me an actual good reason for this) or the fact she's seemingly incapable of doing anything to help the women in the court of nightmares, but everytime she was mentioned, i had to let out a heavy sigh and rub my temples.
on a similar topic. i liked eris. like a lot. out of all the acotar characters sjm has written, eris is by far my favorite.
the inner circle needs to sit the fuck down. they are the most hypocritical bitches i've ever met. they like to think themselves high and mighty. reading them make fun of lucien's band of exiles while their name is literally 'court of dreamers' was the most infuriating thing ever. and then they have the gall to be insulted when called out. don't dish what you can't take.
out of all the inner circle, the only one i don't hate is azriel. this is simply because he is the only one who hasn't opened his big fat mouth and done something bad (except if you maybe count his whole thing with elain). cassian is on my hit list. it's on sight with cassian.
nessian is sjm's worst ship and i will stand by that. lucien/nesta could have been so much. 'nesta would have ripped lucien apart' and cassian was your first choice? not even azriel was considered? like be so for real right now. sjm didn't see the potential of lucien/nesta and i will forever mourn that.
sjm is a terrible writer. i'm not saying this to be mean but she seriously just sucks at it. that being said i admire her ability to still make millions of dollars off her shitty writing. as a woman, i am rooting for her. as a reader, every day i wake up a shoot a prayer to the heavens begging the gods to not let sjm write any more books from the inner circle's pov.
lucien/elain is better than azriel/elain. argue with the wall.
eris/azriel is better than azriel/elain. you can kiss my ass.
NESTA/ERIS IS BETTER THAN RHYSAND/FEYRE. i know this because i have been enlightened.
feyre is a victim to rhysand. that being said, she is also a major bitch. both can be true because these things are not mutually exclusive. i wish she could make friends outside of the ic like nesta did, but i know that's unlikely.
feyre's pregnancy storyline was completely useless and went against her whole character.
acomaf retconned everything about tamlin and feyre's relationship in order to make more money. idc.
tamlin gets a ridiculous amount of hate. rhysand is hypocritical. so tamlin locking feyre in a house because she wants to ride out with him into potential danger is terrible and abusive, but rhysand locking nesta in the house of wind for... *checks notes*... having sex and spending money on alcohol is helping her? what?

Oh, this will be a rant. Bear with me, or ignore me. You can either argue or agree… However, if you want to read, it will be a freaking essay. Just a warning.
Tumblr media
1. MATES! Or better yet, the whole thing about mates being rare and the SJM being like: “You get a mate, and you get a mate, and you get aaaaaaa MATE, etc”, makes perfect sense. Like in ACOTAR you have a world divided in half. Literally half the population is separated by a freaking wall. If Feyre didn’t cross the wall, and eventually became Fae, Rhysand would never found his mate. Nor would Cassian or Lucien. Rhysand father was over 900, when he found his mother. Do you have any idea how many times he could have died??? In ToG, you don’t have winnowing, or teleportation. Traveling the world for weeks on end? Months? Years? Which human will do that? How many of them? And if Aelin and Rowan didn’t find each other, neither would Lorcan and Elide. For example. And in CC? Their powers were corrupted, and with that their senses as well. So yeah. MATES ARE RARE!!!!
2. The whole critique of HOFAS. I get it if you don’t like it. That’s perfectly fine. However, there is no reason attacking some of the well established characters like Nesta and Azriel. First thing first. Nesta, and the whole story how SJM just ruined the ending of ACOSF, cause Nesta was all healed and whatnot. Depression is a serious illness, that is far from easy to beat. And even if you “beat it”, it does not end overnight. Yes, she had an amazing story of overcoming all that was there, but still, it did not disappear. And it probably never will. There can be days, weeks and months that it can take hold of you. That is perfectly normal, and fine, and Nesta falling again, does not mean she is back there. She has her family, her friends and her mate to help pick her up, and having a bad day or two, or a week is NORMAL. Even for people who do not suffer from depression, let alone the one who does. So don’t attack with the whole “ruined the journey of Nesta”, cause it ain’t true. We do not know what is happening in Pyrithian yeat, so chill.
3. I’ll make it a new point. AZRIEL!!! My baby. If SJM stays true to her words, my little kinky baby! 😜 Why the freaking f*ck, is it weird to have Az there instead of Cass? Like yeah, Nesta and Cass are mates, but that does not mean they are joined by umbilical cord for f*ck sake! Az is a spymaster, and it makes perfect sense for him to be trailing them. Being found out however, by accident or on purpose is questionable, but it makes so much more sense for him to be there and get as much info about this new person from different world. If there was a battle, full on war, yeah, I would expect Cass, freaking GENERAL of Night Court ARMIES, there, but for this mission?? People, have you heard of common sense?? Just cause you want to see more of Cass and Nesta, does not make it a good idea for running a court as High Lord. Deal!
4. Az and Nesta friendship? Amazing. The way he calmed her down, with mentions of Cass and Nyx. Amazing! And it is established in ACOSF that there was friendship between the two, so why the fuck are ppl freaking out? Is it because of the fantasy of threesome?? Excuse you!!! Get your mind out of the fucking gutter prudes! Just because Cass was the main love interest and turned out to be her mate, does not mean she cannot enjoy her own imagination. For fuck sake, woman keeps reading smutty books, of course she has a dirty mind. And at least 1/4 of those books have 3somes in it, if not the whole reverse harem!!!! What women (in her sexual prime, like she’s 25 or something) would not enjoy 2 hunks worshipping her??? If you wouldn’t, well… keep lying to yourself. The rest of us know the truth.
5. AZ DESERVES A MATE! Now repeat after me! AZ DESERVES A MATE! No, not Elain. Gods not that bitch. And she will turn out to be a bitch I’m 99.99% sure of it. As Rhysand mentioned, even roses have thorns. And we still have to see what she has to show. I’m sure it’s foreshadowing. Nobody is that nice. Or better said, nobody is that nice for a long time. I’m not even sold on the idea of Lucien and Elain, let alone Az and her. Be it Gwyn, Eris, Helion or Mother herself, Az deserves a mate! A mate who will love him! All of him, good and bad, and icy. And no, not the one that will “melt his ice” but the one who will embrace it. Cause it won’t be Az anymore. I didn’t see Nesta taming Cassians wild side, but going along with it, enjoying it. So why would Az mate “melt his ice”??? The mate his shadows will feel comfortable with. Where he can go through his day and find shadows missing, finding them with him/her/them. Doesn’t matter. He needs his own journey, full of trials and errors, and full on f*ck ups, for his happy ending. I believe it will be Gwyn. But it can be anyone but Elain. She will never love him fully. She will always, even when she refuses Lucien, feel the mating bond, and I cannot explain how badly I don’t want that to happen to Az. Cause HE will wake up every morning thinking: “ Is this the day she leaves me for her mate?”. And seeing his brothers happiness with their mates, he will ask this. And he deserves so much better!
6. RHYSAND! Just that! FREAKING RHYSAND! Why the f*ck are ppl freaking out about his behavior in ACOSF and HOFAS??? Let’s start from the beginning. RHYSAND is a well established character. And he is the same from start to now. He is a manipulative, scheming bastard, secretly trying to do good things, by whichever means necessary! Good or bad. For f*ck sake, he was Amarathas 2nd in command and her whore for 50 years… Like, yeah, he is good, and he is a feminist, and he is all of this and that, but he is still just… him! That won’t change, and I don’t want it to change, cause I really like his character as it is. (You have every right to hate him, but not on the account of him “changing”) Him threatening Nesta when she revealed the risk of pregnancy! YES, YES, and YES! He had every right to do so, and him telling Cass to get her out of there, was more than I would have done. (And no, I am not talking about the moral dilemma of him not telling Feyre in the first place, cause that was bad, however, what would you do? We can discuss morality all day long, and everybody would take the high road until it’s time, sooooo… Don’t!) Oh, and him reprimanding Nesta in the extra in HOFAS. Again spot on. Because, if Az or Cass have done something sooooooo stupid, he would have beaten them in the training ring to the inch of their life. Mor would probably take the full burn of his power. And Amren… Well let’s not go there. Most of the ppl started talking shit about Rhys and his behavior in HOFAS, however I was pissed, and I’m still pissed at Feyre.
7. Feyre!!! Oh my Gods!!! I’m starting to hate her. I liked her so much. Strong FMC, overcoming her obstacles, trying to do good for her family and friends and mate. But HOFAS! So mad!!!!! YOU ARE A F*CKING HIGH LADY! Your damn sister just gave one of the deadliest weapons to basically complete stranger, who btw, came to your house and wrecked PRISON of all places… In Midgard Avallen island changed completely. What the f*ck happened to the prison when she took part of the star??? She f*cking freed the Asteri/Dalgan in you house, and you sister was like: “Yeah, sure, take the mask, please don’t die or fall prey to the Asteri”. And you give shit to your MATE and a f*cking HIGH LORD of the court for reprimanding you damn sister??? Like f*ck off bi*ch. I’m all for feminism and females supporting each other, but this is politics! This is a leader talking to his subject, not a f*cking family show on air. Honestly, it’s starting to look like Feyre is abusing Rhys, and using his feelings for her and their mate bond to do things the way she wants them to be done. And I hate that it looks that way.
8. This is the last one for now. Az and Rhys interaction in extra in ACOSF. AGAIN, ppl say it with me… RHYSAND IS A HIGH LORD OF THE NIGHT COURT!!! So yes, they are friends and all of that, but at the end of the day, Rhys is the leader, and he knows his shit. And he has every right to say that shit to Az. However, I do think it is misleading. We will see if I’m right, but. If Gwyn is Az mate, I believe she knows. And I believe Rhys knows as well. I really think they are friends. (Especially over the things that happened to them, and knowing who their mates are, but not telling them, since they weren’t/aren’t ready. The whole scene of Rhysand telling Nesta to be respectful to Gwyn kinda gives me that vibe). So him telling Az “he will make him regret it”, kinda comes from that. However, I get a feeling (again might be wrong, time and SJM will tell), that making Az regret his action will involve his mother. We had mentions of her, sooooo. (I have this reoccurring thought, about a random attack, that Az takes care of, on one of his spying missions, and the enemy mentions that they will take his mate or something like that. Az coming back to Velaris, and freaking out about Elain being in danger, and everybody freaking out as well. Until Rhys asks to look at what happened, and realizes that the enemy was not saying Elain, but his mate, and runs of in search of Gwyn, who’s been attacked or kidnapped… Yeah, just there sitting in my head. Does not want to leave.)
Anyway, that’s it for now. There are much more points I would like to make, but I’ll leave it for some other time.
It took way longer than anticipated to write this. And I’m sorry for any grammatical error or misspelling. English is my second language.
If you stuck till the end, thank you, and let me know what your thoughts are??? I would appreciate discussion over open war, but go ahead and do what you like….
Love,
Lady Tina

A Shadow’s Tale — Chapter Five
Tumblr media
Azriel x Pirate Female!Reader
CHAPTER FIVE
Word Count: +4,100
a/n: Gosh I'm terrible at keeping up with posting, I'm really sorry! I'll try not to take this long again! But a very steamy chapter is here, so enjoy! <3
Warnings: NSFW, Minor DNI, +18, mentions of scars, shadow play
You hated lies, and you never meant to deceive. The truth was a bitch and you weren’t sure if it was best known or kept locked away.
But hearing Azriel’s words broke something within yourself you weren’t sure would ever heal. You heard his roar in the skies but you walked out of the town house and walked home. You quickly realized your mistake as you took in the tall building and the mocking 10,000 steps.
You scoffed at yourself and turned around walking into town. Soon you reached a bar and walked in taking a seat and ordering a drink. You drank it quickly feeling the burn on your throat from the alcohol and ordered another one sipping on it.
“I didn’t peg you for a drinker.” You turn toward the soft masculine voice and took in his familiar red hair. He had a few tiny braids that held his hair back on his left side while the rest cascaded over his right shoulder. His golden eye assessing you without so much of a head motion. He sported a small smile and you mimicked.
“I didn’t peg you for small talk…” You murmured.
“Lucien.” He said and you nodded. “I don’t think we ever got properly introduced.” He reached out his hands over the counter and you looked at it taking it slowly.
“What does a member of the autumn court does on the Night Court?”
“It’s complicated, what about you?” He grinned, “a pirate?”
“It’s complicated,” you grinned back nursing your drink.
“Fair,” He looked down on his drink pressing his thumb on the rim and you followed the movement “They don’t really make it easy for us estranged uh?”
You chuckled softly, “Certainly not,” You took a deep breath “But tell me, what keeps you here?”
“My mate,” he said softly and you heard the sadness in his voice.
“Oh…” you exclaimed surprised, “Did she…”
“No, she’s alive” He dismissed your dark thoughts, “Just in love with someone else…”
“Oh…” You looked away from his face taking a deep breath, “I guess we’re both on the same boat then…”
He looked at you frowning, “You have a mate?”
“No… At least not that I know of… It’s just… This male I got sort of close to…” you shook your head chuckling, “I thought he was different, but I think I was just choosing to ignore what was right in front of me...”
“I see…” He mumbled, “He’s a jerk.” You raised your brows at him questioning, “You seem like a good person, whoever that male is… He’s probably not worth it.”
“Did she ever accept the bond?” You asked after a few minutes of silence.
“No… I also never forced it, I guess the reason I’m still here is because I hope someday she will feel the way I do for her but… I think her judgment is too clouded for that…”
“She sounds like a jerk,” he looked at you, the corners of his mouth turning up slowly. “You know, you are a great guy and all that.” You winked making him laugh throwing his head back and you joined.
You ended up meeting with Bonnie at the inn your crew was staying at. Lucien had left for his apartment in the city after hugging you goodbye and wishing you good luck. You shared a bed with Bonnie and snuggled just like you had done so many times before when you were younger.
“Are you ready for this?” She asked while you finished tying up your boots.
“I don’t think I will ever be ready, but I guess I don’t really have a choice now, do I?” Bonnie put her hands on your shoulders making you look at her.
“You will always have a choice.”
“They need this to win the war, and I…” You took a deep breath shaking your head.
“I know, but don’t let your business with the spymaster mess up your plans for Hybern.”
“I want him dead.”
“He will die.” Bonnie reassured you and you only nodded.
Soon you, Bonnie and Sebastian were making your way to your ship. You told the rest of the crew to stay back. Rhysand might or might not know about your magic yet but you still wanted to show no threat.
As soon as you arrived you saw Cassian, Rhysand, Feyre, Nesta and Amren waiting. No Azriel. And that fact made your heart ache a little more.
You had spent most of the night awake thinking about what you had heard. The way his voice dropped with venom and hatred when he spoke about you.
You had only caught part of the conversation when they started talking about you. But it had been enough to understand his feelings for you. Lust was all he had ever felt. Nothing else. Just another female who almost fell for his charm.
“Shall we?” Rhysand nodded to you and you nodded back slightly.
You walked in front with your friends as you stepped on the little boat that would drive you to your ship. Cassian, Rhysand and Feyre had flown in while Sebastian roamed the boat. Nesta had told them she would travel with you instead of flying and you gave her an appreciative nod.
When you reached the side of the ship. Sebastian went up the side ladder rope first and then Bonnie, you helped Nesta before you went up after her.
“Guide us,” Rhysand spoke simply and you approached him.
“Before I take you to it… I wanted to say something” He only nodded, a silent permission to keep going, “I wanted to say thank you… I know I kind of came uninvited into your lives and haven’t been the most… grateful”
“Is that all?” Rhysand voice sounded colder than usual and you nodded finally guiding them in to your cabin.
You took the key that was in a chain around your neck and walked towards a cupboard at the end of the room. You could feel their eyes on your back. It opened with a click and you took a shuddering breath opening it wide. You felt it’s magic straight away. The dark power that coated the troves. Bonnie and Sebastian came closer and helped you taking them out: a sword, an harp and a mask.
You handed them to Cassian, Rhysand and Nesta. You turned towards the cupboard again and used another key to open a tiny compartment in the back. You took out a book that made the magic running through your veins hum in response.
Taking a deep breath you turned around and handed it over to Feyre who looked at it in confusion.
“What is this?”
“It’s how my father learned about magic while in Hybern… More specifically how to take our magic back.” There was no surprise in Rhysand’s face to the mention of your magic. He knew. Of course he did.
Feyre however seemed like the only one who was surprised by this news.
“Your magic? What…” she took a look at her mate, “you knew?”
“Why tell us now? Why not sooner?” He asked, deliberately ignoring her question and I frowned at him.
“I wasn’t sure… It’s not natural, what they did to me,” you spoke fighting your emotions, “I hate who I became because of it, I didn’t want this”
“You came here wanting an alliance and then you lied,” He scoffed, “You said you weren’t sure you could trust us and yet… You were the one hiding things from us. Tell me now… how can I trust you?”
You shook your head, “The troves… the book, I… I’m giving it to you…”
“And they will be very useful, but you need to go.” He said firmly.
“Rhys…” Feyre gasped.
“You promised!” You said pointing a finger in his direction, he waved a hand making the troves vanish. You breaths became faster.
“You also promised not to double cross me. I guess we both broke our words.”
“Rhysand you can’t be serious.” Nesta spoke, arms crossed over her chest. “They didn’t do anything wrong.”
“I’m not discussing this with you, Nesta.” Rhysand bit off gaining a low growl from Cassian which he ignored. “We are leaving now,” he turned to you, “I want you all gone off my city by tomorrow morning.”
You were too stunned to speak. You could feel Rhysand’s dark power encasing your ship and then gone as he winnowed himself and the rest of them away.
“I can’t believe he did that…” Bonnie broke the silence and you fell to your knees, hands on your face as you let the tears fall for a while.
“I’ll go get our things back!” Sebastian spoke angrily and you held his arm.
“No.” You simply said taking a seat by your desk, he stormed out pacing on the deck.
A few minutes and a lot of tears later you got up wiping your eyes with the back of you hand. “Where are you going?” Sebastian spoke.
“There’s someone I need to find before we leave.” You spoke firmly and left the ship.
You ventured yourself through the forest, your pace was fast and you kept replaying in your head the words you wanted to tell him. You weren’t sure where you were headed but something was pulling you in that direction so you followed your gut.
The sun was almost setting when you finally found him. Perched on a rock with the hems of his pants pulled up and his bare feet in the freezing cold water of the river. Azriel’s back was on you, his shadows looked almost frantic surrounding him that you could’ve sworn you had heard them whispering incoherencies.
You took some deep breaths before approaching him. You sat by him, he didn’t move or flinch or looked in your direction. He knew you were coming. His eyes were fixed on the running water that splashed his feet. His breathing was calm and steady. The anger you had sensed the day before no where to be seen.
“You hate me.” You broke the silence.
“I don’t hate you.” His voice was raspy like he hadn’t spoken in a while, he cleared his throat “I could never hate you.”
“I heard what you said, how you truly feel about me.” He said nothing so you continued, “I’m leaving… Tomorrow morning.” His head snapped in your direction, his brows furrowed.
“Why?”
“Rhysand has the troves… He doesn’t need me anymore… I was,” you chuckled sadly, “dismissed.”
“What… No, you probably misheard him… He said he wouldn’t.” He was shaking his head.
“He made it very clear… I guess I should’ve guarded my heart better,” you finally looked him in the eyes, “I trusted too easily, and all I got was heartbreak.” He did not speak, you took in his silence nodding. “I just wanted to say goodbye… I’m not sure why, but I actually liked you Shadowsinger…” you closed your eyes inhaling the cold air, “but even I am not stupid enough to try to claim an already claimed prize.”
“What are you talking about?” He whispered and you just shook your head getting up and heading out the forest not turning back.
Before you could leave the clearing you felt his hands on your arms holding you in place. His shadows swimming around you. Your breathing became shallow.
“Don’t go…” He whispered in your ear making goosebumps rise in your arms. His mint and cherry scent overwhelming your senses. You closed your eyes trying to calm your racing heart. “Please.” He whispered again kissing the crook of your exposed neck. He was so close you could feel his body heat.
“We can’t do this…” You turned around resting your forehead and hands on his chest. His heart was beating just as fast as yours. “You’re spoken for…”
“I’m not—“ you looked him in the eyes.
“You’re going to tell me you don’t love her?”
“Who are you—“
“Elain,” you whispered quickly looking away and felt his posture become rigid under your hands, “Azriel… I don’t know what you two have, but I don’t want in on that mess…” He was very silent and still.
“What do you know about it?” His voice was suddenly low and cold. Nothing like the Azriel who had just been kissing your neck. His hands slid off your arms, the only point of contact was your hands still on his chest.
“You love her.” He stepped back suddenly making you stumble back as well.
“I don’t…”
“Don’t do it Az.” Your jaw was clenched and you pointed a finger at him. “Don’t lie to my face like that.”
“She has a mate.” You dropped your hand to your side. Your mouth gaped with realization.
“Lucien…” You whispered looking around shaking your head. “You… Elain…” You took some steps back to create distance between you two and putting your hand to your forehead.
“I know how it looks and sounds,” He talked low and you looked at him wide eyed.
“Who is your mate Azriel?” You asked him suddenly and he gapped at you. He shook his head. “Who. Is. Your. Mate?”
“I don’t know.” He was looking at his feet now, his hands on fists on his side. He didn’t look at you as he spoke. “I thought… Maybe the mother was wrong, three sisters and three brothers… But she is not mine, for all I know I don’t even have a mate. We would’ve crossed paths by now.” He looked at you now, “I thought…” he sucked in a shaky breath, he stepped closer. “I thought you were my mate when we first met on your ship… it had made sense for me, but… there’s nothing, no light, no thread, no bond… “
“So what? You were trying to take me to bed to prove that I wasn’t your mate?” You stayed a few feet away from him, “And where does Elain stand in all this? Did she know?”
“She suspected after that night… But no, I never told anyone.”
“Rhys?”
“He doesn’t want me involved with you for political reasons and also…”
“Because of my magic.”
“Yes… We don’t know what you are still, we don’t understand.”
“I showed you what I am…”
“I know, but…”
“And does it even matter?”
“What?”
“The bond… what would’ve happen if you were in fact my mate? Rhys would just order you not to be? Because he doesn’t like it? Like me?”
“It’s not like that…”
“Please enlighten me.”
“If you were my mate,” He paused putting a hand to his face and moving it to his hair pushing it back. “If you were mine, no one would have anything to do with it.”
“But I’m not…”
“You’re not…”
“Then why are you trying to kiss me Azriel?” You stepped closer and he mimicked you.
“Because you vex me,” Another step forward, “Because when you’re near I feel rage, and lust,” another step, his forehead on yours, his eyes were slits, “I have no self control when you laugh or when you talk or when you lose your breath when I’m close.” His arm wrapped around your waist making your body flush to his. “I wanna kiss you, since that day in the dungeons.” He licked his lips, you could feel his hot breath on your face, “I wanted to kiss you since you first looked me in the eyes, seeing the worst of me and my power and you didn’t coward,” His lips brushed yours very lightly now, “I wanted to shut your wicked little mouth, and even whip you because I knew that day that you’d enjoy it.” A little whimper left your mouth and not even a second later his mouth was on yours. An hunger you’ve never felt before. You wrapped your arms on his neck using your nails to scratch the nape pulling him closer to you. A clash of teeth and tongue, you let our soft moans and you could hear his own soft growls.
He wanted you, mating bond or not.
And Gods you wanted him. So badly.
“I want you,” He whispered when you both stopped for oxygen.
“I want you… too” you said in between breaths.
“Come with me,” He was looking you in the eyes, pleading and your nod of approval was enough for him to take you from the ground wrapping your legs around his waist. His shadows wrapped around the both of you and you stopped feeling the breeze of the forest or the scent of pine. Instead you were suddenly in a dark room. His room, you quickly realized as you took in your surroundings. There wasn’t a lot of decoration but it was very him. A few books scattered by the side table and the king size bed neatly made.
“Where are we?” You asked as he put you down although you could’ve guessed.
“My apartment,” he explained and you nodded looking from the bed to him, suddenly nervous. “We don’t have to,” he reassured you taking your face in his hands.
“I want to.” You looked him in the eyes and then he was kissing you again, gentler this time, slower. He wrapped his tongue in yours in a slow and torturous dance as he walked you back towards the bed. The back of your knees soon hit it and he started kissing your neck while undoing your shirt, slowly sliding it off of you, first your shoulder, that he kissed once naked, followed by your breasts, which were still covered with your white laced bralette, he hummed in appreciation and kissed each nipple, now hardened, on top of the fabric making your moan softly. You put your hands in his hair as he kept descending. Kissing your belly and each of your scars murmuring praises as he did so. He ended up on his knees as he started taking first your boots off then your pants leaving your underwear on.
He looked up through his lashes and you parted your lips at the beauty of this man on his knees for you. He gave you a smirk, clearly smelling your arousal mixed with his own. Your hands still played with his hair as he put his nose on top of your panties and sniffed.
“Perfect,” He murmured and you bit your bottom lip holding in a moan.
It took him only a fast movement to be on his feet and throwing you on his bed making you yelp. You were on your elbows as he made a show of taking his leathers off showing off his muscles and tattoos. Your eyes traced each rippled muscle and each swirl as if you could devour it. His shadows were still there, more frantic than you’ve ever seen them and you stared in awe.
“Like what you see?” He purred removing his pants. No undershorts, only the sheer size of him. You looked in his eyes, cheeks flushed, you swallowed hard before murmuring, “Very,”
His grin was answer enough to let you know of his approval. He picked up his pants and took some sort of cloth out of his pocket. He grinned like a cat and then covered your eyes with the blind fold.
“What…”
“I want you to feel everything,” You were about to object when he added in a soft voice near your ear, “Trust me.” You only nodded.
He took hold of your ankles pulling you the edge of the bed. Spreading your legs wider he hoisted your legs on his shoulders leaving a trail of kisses from your ankle to your inner tight. He repeated the movement on your other leg making you whimper with desire. You couldn’t see him, and you suddenly understood why. The sensation of his hands, lips and tongue seemed ten times intensified.
His nose caressed your center on top of your panties just like before, but this time he used his hand as well pressing on your clit making you moan loudly.
“So wet and ready baby,” He purred and you swallowed hard, trying to controls your breaths.
“Please,” You begged getting a soft bite on the fabric right above your bud making you close your legs around his head which made him chuckle softly.
And as encouragement enough he put your underwear to the side licking you thoroughly. He made work of his tongue on your clit while he inserted two fingers inside you. His rhythm was slow and torturing, your moans were pleading, and he quickly ripped off the fabric making you gasp in surprise.
The darkness created by the blind fold and the knowledge of this male working on you plus all the sensations on your pussy, made your back arch off the bed and you were coming in his mouth with a loud moan. He licked you clean while you tried to recover from the mind blowing orgasm.
He removed the blind fold from your eyes and you sat up quickly kissing him hard. He held you by the neck kissing you back just as intently. You could feel the smile on his lips.
“Let me…” You reach for his cock but he held your wrists quickly tying them above your head.
“I’m not done with you just yet.” He said on a breathy moan and you swallowed looking into his hooded hazel eyes.
His shadows circled around your waist and center, you felt their coolness, which felt great because you were on fire thanks to the male in front of you.
“What are they doing?” Azriel only smiled sheepishly.
“I hope you like some shadow play.” You looked at him confused but your eyes widened as you felt two other shadows wrapping around your legs and holding them apart with a strength that definitely did not feel natural.
Azriel got out of the bed and you looked at him expectantly. He stood back in all his glory and you took him in. His wings were flared a little and he looked absolutely dangerous and delicious.
You saw him smirking as he also took you in appreciatively, then you felt it and almost came undone by it. You threw your head back whimpering as you felt his shadows working your nipples and clit. Their present almost ghostly, but their feel like feather light fingers. A flick on each nipple, and then they starting pumping in and out of you with lightness and speed.
Your mouth was open in a silent moan as they worked you and held you in bed. You felt yourself getting lost in all these new sensations, your core pulsing so strongly you  were so close to a second orgasm.
“Don’t come,” Azriel voice boomed suddenly making you jerk your head up and finding his gaze.
“Az…” You plead but he came closer to you and suddenly all the shadows recoiled making your gasp.
“You’re so fucking mesmerizing,” He said lowly as he sat next to you pulling you into his lap so you were straddling him. “Did you like that baby?”
“Yes,” You murmured and he held your chin up kissing you softly.
“Would you like to do it again?” You nodded but he tsked, “Use your words love,”
“Yes.”
“Do you want me to finish what they started?”
“Please.”
He kissed you softly once more before sitting you up and aligning his cock with your pussy. He thrust in slowly making you hold on to him tightly.
“I’d love to fuck you hard, but right now I just want to make love to you.” He whispered in your ear and your heart swelled with emotion.
“I’d like that.”
And just like that you moved in sync with him, he distributed kisses on your chest and neck. Nibbled on your bottom lip and as you heard him trying to hold back you whispered. “Please Az, do what you need to.” And just like that he laid you in bed thrusting his dick more franticly making your body ache in such delicious ways that you didn’t notice your orgasm building up and exploding. He came apart right after you and put his forehead against yours breathing decompensated.
“Beautiful,” He whispered smiling widely with his eyes closed.
“Beautiful,” You agreed, a lonely tear falling on your cheek as he kissed it away.
—
You were gone the next morning.
After spending the rest of the  night in Azriel’s arms, both spent and tired. It was just before dawn that you silently left. Tears staining your cheeks as you boarded your ship with you crew and sailed away from Velaris.
“Y/N?”
“Hmm?” You wiped away the tears and turned to look at a very worried Bonnie and Sebastian.
“Where to, Captain?”
“South,” You turned facing the open ocean. “There’s a High Lord I have a visit to pay to.”

“How do I passive-aggressively say fuck you to someone in flower?”
Lucien was furious. He was fuming. He was positive that if was possible, he’d actually be on fire. It was too fucken early for him to be going back and forth with his coworker but that bitch loved to undermine him and continuously make his life hell at work.
Due to his outburst after their latest argument, his manager, who also happened to be that demon’s manager, was forcing him to make amends by buying her a nice bouquet of flowers to say he was sorry. Which he wasn’t. Not even in the slightest. But oh, she was going to get that bouquet of flowers.
The Fawn’s Greenhouse was only a few blocks away and taking a walk gave him a way to release some of his anger. But what he didn’t expect was to find a beautiful young woman behind the counter, staring at him like he was crazy. Then again, who walks into a flower shop and demands those kinds of flowers?
His eyes went to the nametag on the front of her dress and he felt his face go red.
Elain. Such a pretty name for such a pretty girl.
Elain, on the other hand, was slightly taken aback.
She loved her flowers. She loved any flowers.
She loved growing things in her garden and every single part of the process mattered to her; planting the seeds, watering them, monitoring their growth, and finally when they blossomed. Her flowers were her babies.
When Feyre and Nesta offered to pitch in and help her open her own flower shop, she was over the moon. Her own savings had fallen a little short and she was thrilled to have the support from her sisters. The Fawn’s Greenhouse was only a few blocks away from where Nesta worked as an editor at a literary agency and a few extra blocks from where Feyre taught Art at the local community college.
It was a great way for the three of them to meet for lunch or dinner quite often, as they would be tonight.
But to Elain, flowers meant many good things: happiness, gratefulness, new beginnings, apologies, and forgiveness. So when this strange angry red-headed man stormed into her shop and slammed money on the counter, growling at her, she was very taken aback at his request.
Elain finally blinked rapidly then chuckled. “Well, hello.” she said and leaned against the counter. “There are a few different ways to do that, Mr…?”
All the anger that Lucien had walked in with completely vanished and was replaced with awe as he took in her features. Gods, she was gorgeous.
Elain tilted her head to the side and Lucien almost combusted as she gave him an encouraging smile and he cleared his throat.
“Lucien.” he mumbled, a hand rubbing the back of his neck, the color on his cheeks matching his hair. “My name is Lucien.”
“Welcome to my flower shop, Mr. Lucien.” she replied automatically and gave him an even wider smile. “I see someone’s ruffled your feathers this morning.”
Lucien snorted, causing Elain to giggle. “Ruffled my feathers. More like plucked all my feathers to death that psychotic bit —” he cut himself off as Elain gave him an amused look. “I’m sorry. Let me start over.”
Elain watched, trying to hold back a laugh as Lucien took a deep breath and ran a hand through his hair. He smiled at her and she smiled back.
“Hello.”
“Yes, hello.”
“You have a very lovely flower shop.”
“Thank you! I’ve worked very hard on it.”
“You are also very lovely as well.”
“You aren’t so bad yourself.”
“You could tell me I looked like a piece of filth and I would honestly take it as the highest of compliments.”
Elain burst out laughing at that and Lucien grinned. Score for him.
“Well, that wouldn’t be very nice to say to anyone.” Elain replied, shaking her head with another chuckle. “Besides, it wouldn’t be true. You’re quite lovely yourself.”
Lucien leaned against the counter, the gap between them growing smaller. “I have never felt so lovely in my entire life.” he said, and with an exaggerated flick of his wrist, tossed his hair over his shoulder.
Elain laughed again and Lucien realized he’d only been in the shop for five minutes but he’d sell his soul to hear that sound over and over again.
“You have quite the humor, Mr. Lucien.”
“Lucien. Just...Lucien.” he corrected her gently with a smile. “Mister sounds too formal and I’d prefer to be on casual terms with the person that’s going to give me my special request flowers.”
“Your ‘fuck you’ flowers?” she asked with a grin and he had the audacity to give a nonchalant shrug.
“The person deserves them, I can assure you.” he replied and sighed. “It’s my coworker. She makes my life a living hell at work. We had a fight and my manager is forcing me to get flowers as an apology. This is me trying to be nice.”
“By sending her ‘fuck you’ flowers?” Elain asked again, her lips twitching. She wondered about this so called ‘horrible coworker’.
“Keyword here, is trying.” he said with a grin and Elain laughed. “Not all of us can be as nice as you, Elain.”
Elain’s cheeks flushed. She liked the way he said her name a lot more than she’d care to admit.
“And how do you know I’m nice?” she countered, leaning off the counter and crossing her arms across her chest with a smile. “You’ve only just met me.”
“Your name is Elain, you’re beautiful, and you own a flower shop. You could literally stab a man in front of me and I would just say he had it coming.” Lucien promptly replied. He sounded insane, he was well aware, but instinct told him he wasn’t wrong. “Also, you smell really nice.”
Elain rolled her eyes and wanted to curse herself for the blush on her cheeks and the smile that was way too wide. “Are you always this shameless of a flirt, Lucien?”
He straightened up as Elain pulled out a book from under the counter and placed it in front of him, flipping through the pages. “Only with pretty girls who own flowershops named Elain.” he said and gave her a charming smile when she paused her flipping to look at him.
She shook her head and chuckled lightly. He was shameless. Very handsome but oh so shameless. “So,” she started, going back to flipping through her flower book for the right ones to fit his order, pointing as she explained. “We have a few options for your amusing choice in the bouquet. There are Geraniums — Horseshoe Geranium which specifically means stupidity and Foxglove flowers which can mean insincerity. There’s also Meadowsweet flowers which mean uselessness, Yellow Carnations that indicate you’re disappointed in a person and last but not least, Orange Lilies which symbolize hatred.”
Elain finally looked up at Lucien, whose grin had gotten wider and wider with each flower that she rattled off and she laughed at his expression. “I take it all these options sound good?” she questioned with a raised brow.
Lucien’s grin was wicked. “Oh, these sound fantastic. Can I have a mix of them all in a bouquet? Please?”
Elain rolled her eyes and chuckled. “As you wish, good sir.” she said then pursed her lips as she started writing down his order. “Is there a note you’d like me to add with the bouquet?”
His eyes lingered on her pursed lips long enough that Elain had to look up confused at his silence and a blush crept on both their faces.
“Sorry.” he said with a sheepish grin and Elain bit her lip, holding back a smile as she continued filling out the order. A moment passed in silence before she responded.
“I don’t mind.” she said softly.
“Good. Because there’s a lot to admire.” Lucien responded, leaning back on the counter, closer to her.
“I’m sure getting spoiled with compliments today.” she said, giving him a playful smile and he grinned in return.
“They’re all well-deserved compliments. I meant them all.”
“Oh, I know. It’s why I haven’t kicked you out yet.” she said as she moved around her counter, grabbing a note card for him to write on and a pen as he laughed. “For your note. The bouquet shouldn’t take too long...I’m caught up on all my early orders. Would you like to wait or should I have them delivered?”
She tilted her head, waiting for his answer and the smile she gave him told him their thoughts were on the same wavelength.
She wanted him to wait.
And wait he would. He’d wait an eternity for those fucken flowers as long as she kept talking to him. Lucien had shamelessly told her this, realizing too late that he was babbling his thoughts aloud.
Elain’s laughter was enough to ease his embarrassment and the two continued chatting as she moved about, putting the bouquet together. Lucien watched her, appreciating the way she moved and talked and the way she laughed at his jokes. Elain’s cheeks were stained red as they talked, trying to contain how much she was enjoying the attention he was giving her, and how invested he was in everything she was saying and doing. Their conversation was comfortable and flowed so naturally that both of them were slightly disappointed in how quickly she finished.
Giving him a shy smile, she gently placed the finished bouquet in all it’s glory in front of him. “Here it is!” she said cheerfully. “Your requested bouquet. Beautiful and full of loathing.”
Lucien grinned, eyeing her work approvingly. “It looks stunning.” he replied and Elain smiled widely, pleased. “Just like the lovely lady who put it together.”
Elain giggled as he reached out, taking her hand and kissed it. “You’re too much.” she mumbled and Lucien chuckled.
“I can’t help it. Something about you…” he said quietly and the two locked eyes.
“Something about you too.” she agreed and Lucien smiled. He paid her and balanced the bouquet in his hands. His eyes flickered between the bouquet and the beautiful girl who had made it and he quickly licked his lips.
“Would...would you like to go out to dinner sometime?” he asked and relief filled his whole body as she beamed at him.
“I would love to.”
“Great! Friday night?”
“I’ll be ready at 6:30.”
“Perfect.”
Elain smiled at him then grabbed one of her notecards and quickly jot down her number. “I expect more shameless flirting till then.” she said softly, curling a strand of hair behind her ear.
“And I will be more than happy to oblige.” He replied, giving her a wink and Elain giggled.
“I’ll see you Friday then.”
“I’ll be flirting with you sooner than that though.” he replied and she winked at him in return, a blush erupting on both their cheeks.
“I look forward to it.”
“Gods, you’re so fucken cute.” Lucien mumbled and Elain laughed, dipping her head shyly. “I have to leave before this kills me.”
She covered her burning face, grinning widely as she then waved him off. “Go back to work before you get fired.”
“Worth it.” he said, using his free hand to make a finger gun and she snorted softly as he waved then finally left the shop.
Elain bit her lip, smiling to herself. In one way or another, her flowers were always bringing her joy.
~
Elain rushed into the restaurant where she had agreed to meet her sisters earlier that day. She was very excited to tell them about her encounter with Lucien. He had kept his word about the shameless flirting and had her phone buzzing all day; she still couldn’t believe how it happened.
Her pace slowed down when she saw Feyre and Nesta, both seated at their usual table, secluded in a quiet corner of their favorite place. It wasn’t until she was close enough to hear their conversation that she froze completely. On the chair next to Nesta was her sister's bag and a bouquet of flowers that was strangely familiar.
Too familiar.
“And then this asshole hands it to me with a note that says ‘I’m sorry’ in quotation marks like the sarcastic little shit he is.” Nesta snarled and Feyre started laughing. “And then adds that I should look up the meaning of each flower to really appreciate his apology. I’m going to ask Elain what they mean.”
“You are really mean to him, Nes. I’m sure he’s not as horrible as you make him sound.”
“He’s a piece of shit. It brings me joy to make him miserable.” Nesta said with a snort and then noticed Elain. “Elain! You’re finally here. Come on, we’re starving.”
Elain approached the table and sat down slowly, smiling nervously. Oh boy.
“...Nice flowers, Nesta.”
“Thanks.” Nesta replied with a wave of her hand and then picked them up to show Elain. “I got them from a shithead at work as an apology. What do the flowers mean?”
Elain groaned internally. It was indeed her own bouquet full of loathing. She bit her lip. “The guy who gave them to you...his name is Lucien, right?”
Nesta froze and Feyre looked at her curiously. “Yes.” she hissed. Quickly grabbing the note card again, Nesta looked it over. “How did I not notice that he got them from your shop!? That bastard! Did he bother you?!”
“No! He was very sweet.” Elain replied quickly, blushing. “Actually...he asked me out on a date and I said yes. We’ve been texting all day.”
Silence fell on the table before Feyre burst out laughing and Nesta snarled, “What?!”
“It’s later this week. I’m...looking forward to it.”
“Like hell you’re going!” Nesta hissed. “With that idiot! That good for nothing garbage can —”
Elain cut her off with a look. “Nesta.”
Feyre’s laughter had finally subsided and she wiped at her eyes. “Nes...you should be excited for her. She likes him!”
Elain narrowed her eyes at Nesta’s face that was filled with rage, daring her to argue. Feyre looked between the two, her lips twitching.
“So what’s he actually like, then?” Feyre quickly asked. “We know Nesta hates him and makes his life living hell at work.”
Elain gave Nesta one more look before her eyes flickered to Feyre’s face and she gave her a small smile. “He’s actually really nice and funny. I —”
“He has a glass eye and a scar across his face!”  Nesta’s growl interrupting her.
“So?!” Elain automatically replied, pouting. “He got it in an accident! It makes him a strong person!”
“He has a glass eye!”
“It makes no difference to me! I like his personality!”
“He’s an asshole, Elain!”
“You think Cassian’s an asshole too and you’re living with him!” Elain hissed back. “Your judgement isn’t exactly perfect!”
“Well, she gets dicked down by Cassian so I mean…” Feyre interjected with a shrug and Nesta glared at her, her cheeks burning.
“That is irrelevant.”
“Is it, Nes? Is it really?” Feyre asked with a raised brow.
The table fell silent again as Nesta and Elain glared at each other and Feyre tried her best not to laugh. It was only when her phone beeped that Elain torn her eyes away from the vicious staring contest with her sister.
Text from: Lucien How’s dinner going with your sisters? Hopefully, I’m not interrupting anything.
Elain’s eyes looked back up at her sisters and her blush gave away who she was talking to, causing Nesta to glare even harder and Feyre to grin widely.
Text from: Elain No, not at all! I was just telling them about you…funny enough, one of my sisters knows you.
Text from: Lucien Really? What a small world! Which sister is that?
Elain hesitated before she sent the next message.
Text from: Elain The coworker you bought the bouquet full of loathing for. She goes by the name Nesta…though you might refer to her very differently.
Elain bit her lip, frowning after she sent the message. She flipped her phone over and then looked at her sisters.
“Now he knows we’re sisters.” Elain grumbled as Feyre rattled off their usual orders to the waiter.
“Good. If he’s smart, he’ll back off.” Nesta growled and Feyre shoved her gently.
“You back off. Let her live.”
“I don’t like him.”
“There’s a surprise.”
Elain’s reply didn’t make it to her mouth when her phone started ringing. Flipping it over, she blinked in surprise at Lucien’s name popping up. She immediately picked up.
“Hello?”
“I’m so sorry for interrupting you at dinner but I realize how awkward this position is for you right now.” he said, hoping he sounded as apologetic as he felt.
Elain chuckled, a small smile on her face. “Are you calling to tell me our date is canceled now?”
“No.” he replied and Elain’s smile grew wider at how horrified he sounded at the idea. He cleared his throat. “I actually wanted to apologize for saying those things about your sister earlier and I promise that I’ll behave and keep work and personal life separate so that you don’t have to feel weird because your sister and I hate each other. Professionally speaking.”
Elain laughed softly. “Just professionally?”
“...Please don’t make this more difficult for me.” he whined softly on the phone. “It’s bad enough I bought her a bouquet full of loathing from her own sister’s shop.”
“Plot twist, isn’t it?”
It was Lucien’s turn to laugh. “Yes, it is. Does she know what the flowers mean?”
Elain grinned. “Not yet.”
“Let’s keep it that way, please.”
“Fair enough.”
“Really, Elain? You’re letting that walking pile of trash interrupt our dinner like this?” Nesta said, making sure she was loud enough to be heard on the other end of the line.
Elain gave Nesta a reproachful look as Feyre shoved her again. “Behave.”
“Fine...but let me talk to him. He is my coworker after all.” Nesta said, her tone calm. She held out her hand.
Elain looked at her suspiciously but Nesta just wiggled her fingers. Her mouth went into a thin and she sighed. “Lucien, Nesta wants to talk to you.”
“More plot twists.” he said, chuckling.
“You don’t have to.” Elain automatically said but both Lucien and Nesta responded at the same time.
“Yes, he does.
“Yes, I do.”
Elain groaned and then held the phone to her chest. “Nesta...please be polite.”
“No guarantees.”
Squinting at her older sister, she finally handed her the phone with a sigh, pressing on the speaker so they could all hear.
“Hello cockroach.” Nesta greeted him and Elain facepalmed as Feyre snorted.
“Hello demon.”
“Of all the people you decided to hit on, you had to choose my sister?”
“I respectfully asked her out on a date. She’s a grown woman. I don’t really think it’s your business.”
“It isn’t.” Elain added and Nesta squinted at her.
“I’m going to be watching your every move and I swear to god if you so much as lay a finger on my sister, I will crush you with my bare hands.” Nesta threatened in one breath. “That is a promise you filthy little vermin —”
Elain snatched the phone from her hand as Feyre cut her off. “Nesta!”
“Jesus christ, Nesta. I’m not going to hurt Elain!” Lucien hissed on the phone.
“What if I want him to touch me?” Elain snapped, knowing it would silence both her sisters and Lucien. “Hm? What if I — what’s the phrase you used about Cassian and Nesta, Feyre? What if I want to get dicked down by Lucien? Would that be such a big deal?”
Lucien made a sound on the phone that sounded like he was choking as Nesta gasped loudly.
“Elain!”
Taking her phone off speaker, she put it back to her ear and spoke softly, “Lucien, I’ll call you when I get home, okay?”
“Yup. Sounds good.” he responded, truly sounding like the air was being choked out of him and Elain's face turned red.
Closing the call, she eyed her sister and held up a hand as Nesta was ready to launch into a speech. “Listen. I know you’re my older sister and you worry about me because I love flowers and seem like a giant idiot who gets easily fooled —”
“That’s never how I think of you, Elain — “ Nesta quickly interjected, her face falling.
“And I know you’re worried about me because the breakup with Graysen was really bad and I was very hurt,” Elain continued, halting Nesta again as her voice shook. “But I am okay. I am fine. And I’m ready to try something new. So please….please be nice to Lucien. I want to see where this goes.”
Nesta fell silent and Feyre gently leaned over to pat Elain’s hand with a small smile.
“We know, Elain. We love you and support you in whatever decision you want to make.” Feyre said softly. “I look forward to getting to know him.”
“...I’m sorry.” Nesta added and reached out to place her hand on Elain’s other hand. “I’ll behave...Try to be nicer to him.”
“Thank you.” Elain said, a relieved smile on her face until Nesta clenched her hand tightly with death in her eyes.
“But if I ever heard the term dicked down and Lucien in the same sentence again, I will kill someone.”
Silence fell on the table once more as Elain closed her eyes, internally groaning at how she was going to have to address that with Lucien when she got home.
It wasn’t until the waiter served their dinner and walked away that Feyre finally broke the silence.
“But what if she does want to get dicked down by Lucien? Elain sounded very enthusiastic.”
“Feyre!” Nesta hissed as the youngest sister broke down in giggles.
Elain groaned audibly now, her face in her hands knowing Feyre was never going to let this go.
“I’m just saying, go Elain, if she does. Nesta said he was a redhead, do you think the carpet matches the drapes?”
“Feyre —  I swear to all the Gods I will stab you with this fork if you don’t stop.”
“Elain, you’ll be sure to share details, right? I want Nesta to know every detail of when you and Lucien finally get down to business.”
“Feyre —”
“Ohhhh what if Elain visits him at work and you walk in on her getting dicked down by Lucien in his office? On his desk?”
Feyre squeaked as Nesta assaulted her in some form or another. Elain had given up, sighing deeply, her face burning.
Who knew a bouquet of flowers would cause so much trouble?

Please acotar reddit is a complete shithole. The mods are so horribly biased it's not even funny like they'll lockdown not just any elriel post but even any pro feyre post over a lame ass reason while there are people saying completely wild shit. Loser (l.ucien) stans are always having a pity party about how feyre is a bitch for not bathing, feeding and wiping his ass, elain so weak and useless! And of course there's always tamlin dickriders with their "tamlin is actually SO interesting and complex and the inner circle is SO evil! Poor baby tamlin" posts and lately we have Keir, beron and amarantha stans too. It's a lovely place for clowns I guess.
That place is wild. The number of people crying over Tamlin is alarmingly high, which is weird, because he is just not that interesting. At. All. You dont have to hate him or whatever, but to YEARN for Tamlin is wild.
I remember once, someone said, in a fairly polite way, 'how do we get new mods?' and the mods proceeded to .... ban the person for life.
So democracy is alive and well there. The biases are so egregious it's unbelievable, but that's why so many people stopped going on there. I hardly ever peek at that sub, because it's all the same shit. Should I read the books? (I don't know, nobody fucking cares if you read or don't read. Make a decision and stop asking strangers for advice.) I hate Nesta! (Congrats, you want a medal?) I hate Elain! (Congrats x2. This is a genius comment.) Lulu booboo gugu wuwu doodoo (got it, you love Lucien.) IC Sucks! (Cool. No one cares actually.)

Lidia, in HOFAS.
Tumblr media
Read on at your own risk.
ALL 🎨 IG :: @ mftfernandez
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I saw a post on here saying now there's two Fire Breathing Bitch Queen's, and I haven't agreed to anything more in my life. (Post I saw was by @waywardbella can be found HERE) Though I love Lidia, no one owns this title more than the Aelin Ashryver Galathynius
Is it just me, or did anyone else feel like when Lidia went all Fire Badass in the final battle? That it was what was planned for Aelin in the final battle. We would have seen it then, but this was Sarah showing us what we didn't get to.
But Aelin had her own plans, and used up her built up magic when she did, because that was what needed to be done at the time, the only thing to save people, so she made the choice.
Because if I am remembering right, and correct me if I'm wrong, Aelin stood above and let her fire go, too protect Elide as she rode on a horse through Ilkin(? or was it Valg?) to go save Lorcan, bring him back to where everyone else was.
This feels like an Aelin decision that would have surprised Sarah. She did just mention on the Today Show that her characters will do that type of thing, and thinking way back, Sarah replied on Facebook to a comment saying Lucien and Elain being mates was something she didn't even see coming.
So Aelin doing this would mean she did not have that power, that much fire left for the final battle of the book.
So, after taking the antidote to the parasite and turning Pollox and those two guards to ash, Lidia walks out into the field. She then burns and melts many enemies, and bombs, and just, so many things, just as she's walking past them.
Does anyone else think this was, yes part of Lidias character as written, but also a tiny nodd, a small wink if you will, by Sarah, showing us that this is what Aelin would have been like if she didn't use up her fire before she reached her own final battle?

Thinking about how Kingsley and Essek would likely grow close over the years for a few reasons.
First, once Essek let's go of the slight nagging worry that Lucien is in there, he becomes the only person that never gets that odd hidden sadness in his eyes that the rest get when Kingsley happens to say particular things. The rest of the nein do their best to hide when it when he reminds them of their old friend but he can't help but sometimes wonder if he's more of a disappointment than the victory they thought they'd had. Essek never makes him feel this way. He never lost that other person so he only knows Kingsley as something gained.
Next, Essek is hilariously easy to annoy and ruffle which makes him a delightful target for Kingsley's impulse to tease. The rest of the Nein always get a kick out of this it seems and Kingsley does love to put on a good show.
Also, Essek and Kingsley are both late to the party which means they become the two out of the loop on certain inside jokes. Having a companion in those moments, transitions them from the awkward feeling of otherness to the two of them making eye contact across the room and rolling their eyes at their friends who seem to always forget they weren't there for those moments. It becomes their own hidden inside joke making each feel less alone.
They both aim to adventure and have so many experiences yet to have and to see. Kingsley just insinuates himself into Essek's travel plans time and time again. Though Essek doesn't mind solitary travel he slowly warms up to having a companion on some of his more adventurous expeditions. It helps to have someone who has a way with people when in a new continent or city for the first time.
Of course Kingsley also finds himself drawn to Caleb with some strange lingering connection and he can spend time more comfortably with Caleb when Essek isn't viewing Kingsley as a threat to that relationship so Kingsley makes a point at flirting with them both equally. Essek is certainly attractive enough and Kingsley is always drawn to strong magics. And thus his magic man becomes his magic men.
Both Kingsley and Essek love to be sassy little bitches and they develop a specific relationship of verbally sparring with snarky little comments that becomes a substantial part of how the express affection to one another.
After a while it becomes common place when they're all together to see Kingsley weighing down Essek's floating form by draping himself over a shoulder or making him huff with playful annoyance as Kingsley plays with his hair or earrings. Many attribute Kingsley's style of acquiring friendship to spending much time with Jester as it seems they had similar approaches of bothering Essek with affection until he begrudgingly accepted them into his heart. And it worked 💜💜

Okay so I’ve had the Gwynriel head canon for a while and I need to share it.
Imagine it’s “Family Dinner” for the IC and gang and they’re down at the River House
I mean everyone is there, including Lucien and Varian
(for the sake of the story and the fact that I’m a huge Elain/Lucien shipper let’s say they are together at this point)
They’re all eating and all of a sudden Feyre turns to Azriel
She then says “Hey Azriel, there is this girl in my art class”
(at this point the rest of the table shuts up real quick)
She then, with the help of Rhys, tells him all about this girl who they think is just perfect for him
But what no one at the table knows is that he’s been seeing Gwyn for almost a year (they swear they didn’t mean to make it a secret, it just kinda happened)
And Azriel has to tell them “she sounds great but I’m actually already seeing someone”
Dead silence
Then the room ERUPTS
(Let’s remember, Azriel only had feelings for Mor for 500 years, then another women who was unavailable. And this friend group also has absolutely no concept of privacy, so this would be big news.)
Cassian and Rhys are trying to be calm but they are effectively losing their minds
Mor is just grinning and hammering him with questions
As is Feyre
He eventually agrees to bring her to Family Dinner™️ the next time they all get together
So the next day he tells Gwyn
She is understandably very nervous, but excited to officially meet everyone
(Of course she already knows Nesta and Cassian, and she’s met Mor a few times. She met the rest of his family very briefly at Nesta and Cassian’s mating ceremony but that’s it.)
She then insists they have to go shopping so she can find something to wear, since all she has is her priestess robes and training leathers, she also has that dress she wore to Nesta’s mating ceremony but she’s meeting her partner’s family, it’s a special occasion
And it’s not like she can go with Nesta or Emerie without raising alarm bells
So Azriel goes with her
And she has to look perfect, she insists she can’t overdress and she certainly can’t underdress, not when she’ll be dining with the High Lord, High Lady, and the Morrigan
So she eventually finds this dress that she thinks is just perfect
She tries it on and shows Azriel and he is blown away
“You look so beautiful Gwyn”
He says a bunch of other cute shit
Needless to say she buys it and heads back to the House of Wind with Azriel
The day of the dinner, Gwyn is surprisingly calm
Azriel on the other hand is freaking out
I mean he is so nervous
He knows he is in love with Gwyn, the way he feels about her doesn’t even come close to how he felt about Mor or Elain
And she’s about to meet his family
When they get to the River House, they’re the last to arrive
They stand outside together for a moment, Gwyn can tell he’s nervous
She comforts him somehow idk
They walk in, hand-in-hand and are greeted by a grinning Rhys and Cassian standing in the entry way (á la Cassian and Azriel meeting Feyre in ACOMAF)
And Cassian busts out laughing
Rhys just stares, eyes wide
Once Cassian recovers, he says “Oh Nesta is gonna be so pissed I found out before she did”
Rhys, ever the gentleman, steps forward and shakes Gwyn’s hand, introducing himself
They chat for a few minutes before heading into the living room, where everyone else is
Nesta is the first to see them
She looks right at Gwyn and says “oh you bitch”
After somewhat awkwardly introducing Gwyn to everyone, they all sit down for dinner
The group grills Gwyn with questions
They chill out after Gwyn says something that has Azriel burst out laughing
Long story short they all end up loving her and are very happy for the couple
And if they notice his shadows are more lively around her, they don’t say anything
I have so many Gwynriel headcanons so let me know if anyone wants more

SJM characters whose hate makes no sense
Lorcan Salvaterre: aight ik he's a cold-ass warrior but that Maeve thing is not as big a deal as it's made out to be ok. Y'all forget that Aelin was stupid hiding her plans from experienced war generals and that Lorcan never pretended to be loyal to Aelin. And he never intended for Aelin to go through that torture. Plus Maeve would've found them anyway! A little slower, yeah, but still. Nesta Archeron: ok, come on man. She said some mean words, get over it already pls. there are so many characters who did way worse and get no hate for it. Eris Vanserra: ok he called mor a slut. so what? he's playing a role, plus that bitch be spreading heinous lies about him. and he has shown more respect for mor by bailing her out of their marriage and saving her from her father keir, than the entire inner circle who subjected her to her abuser without even telling her. he's not sexist, he's a mama's boy! besides rhysand objectified feyre's breasts in front of a high lord so. Chaol Westfall: Aight bruh tf did he do? It's one thing knowing someone is an assassin and another thing seeing someone actually murder people. He had nothing to do with Nehemia's death, so don't even with that. Celaena was the one who tried to kill him after claiming to love him. What did you expect Chaol to be all sunshine and rainbows with her? Pls be fr. Besides he's Fleetfoot's number one protector so. Additionally, if you haven't read Tower of Dawn, you have zero content. Friendly reminder if you hate Chaol, Dorian AND Aelin don't like you. Nor do Yrene or Nesryn. Gwyneth Berdara: It's mainly Elriels who keep making up evil Gwyn theories and...stop. Just stop. I don't even gaf if you ship them, but don't drag Gwyn into this, ok? She's so precious and she's a r*pe SURVIVOR. LEAVE. HER. ALONE. And if you say she's lying about that and it's part of her evil plan, I will become the monster under your bed. Lucien Vanserra: If you call Lucien a pushover or an abuser, I will actually become violent. Stop blaming male abuse victims. Just stop it. It's ridiculous. Lucien did fight for her and got abused. Go back and read. He's a r*pe survivor too, because he took on the duties his High Lord wouldn't for the sake of his court. Also, if you're dragging him through the dirt because you're an Elriel shipper, the door is that way --> Bombastic side eye to haters of these characters. ESPECIALLY my favorite sassy redheads (Gwyn and Lucien). Maybe y'all are just salty all these characters have last names while half of your favs still don't.

The morality system in fable 2 fascinates me in terms of the implications it has on Sparrow as a person.
-This is heavily based on my last post, so go check that out for more for more context. Yes this is very self-indulgent.
Right, so Sparrow. One of the many great Hero's of Albion. Motivated by grief, and hellbent of avenging the death of their sister at the hands of Lucien. Theresa is the one who raises them to carry out the mission (which also, conveniently, is the easiest way for her to achieve her own life's purpose). Depending on Sparrow's morality, I can see them having 3 distinct personalities in the events leading up to Fable 3:
GoodPure!Sparrow: Who is so influenced by Theresa, that they dedicate to serving the people of Albion for as long as they live. Their grief struck them particularly hard, and Theresa giving them a purpose to strive for at 2 very crucial moments in their life definitely... impacted them. No, they were not happy or satisfied with how their life turned out near the end (mainly because they denied themselves to indulge in pleasure or temptation like, ever), but they did manage to fall for the illusion of "hey, I did a good thing for these people. I don't exactly understand what any of this means or why any of this happened because I never asked questions, but I really hope my kid doesn't feel this way when their day of reckoning comes". They still subconsciously feel the terror and pain from what they went through, and feels so guilty for being apart of the the reason why someone is doomed to repeat it all over again. They never were able to move on from their past, so their attempt to repay it just kinda... consumed them. And because of that, they were never able to be truly known or involved with the lives of their children- or even close allies. Yeah, they knew and respected them for everything they did, but never got to know them beyond that legacy.
Neutral!Sparrow: Who manages to pursue a somewhat balanced life as an opportunist. Throughout their eventful life, they had many ups and downs that shaped the very course of their actions. Yeah, they always intended on avenging Rose, but sometimes the course of action they thought would bring them there got muddled. They tended to let their emotions get the better of them; and despite the good they did, there were always weights on their shoulders that prevented them from ever truly believing themselves to be "pure", or a "well-loved" hero. Sometimes the consequences of your actions can be a bitch. But, because of this lack of a sense of duty, that allowed them to be able to lay back and try and build a life for themselves outside of serving others. Purely just because they wanted to. After all was said and done, they did whatever they wanted. Eventually, that led them to having a home and a life for themselves away from Theresa, destiny, and the greater scheme of the world- Maybe they even dedicated enough time and energy into them self so that they could properly heal and move on from the unhealthy drive of their past actions. Then, Theresa comes in to ruin everything (again), and Sparrow just kind of think about it. As much as they dread the idea of burdening another person with the same fate as them... maybe they could raise them to be different? Maybe, just maybe, this is a chance to truly better the world so that no person had to experience what they had to, long after they them self is gone. Besides- Theresa's like their mom, and when has she ever been wrong? If she says it's destiny, why fight it? Instead, they try to make the most of this opportunity, and raise their children to prepare for an unjust world.
EvilCorrupt!Sparrow: Who's grief and obsession with revenge drives them to become hungry for the life that was ripped away from them at such a young age. Given the powers and abilities to pursue anything they put their mind to, they fill their life with increasingly bolder methods of lashing out and reveling in the ways of just how cruel- and exhilarating- life can be. Yes, they dedicate most of their life to defeating Lucien once and for all- but take it a step further by striving to make him seem insignificant. After all he's done, it's only fair that he will never be remembered compared to the child he failed to kill. But-then Theresa tells them to "get the fuck out of my tower", and Sparrow is pissed. They fuck around for awhile to let out some tension and have some fun, and then Theresa shows up again and tells them that they're gonna be a ruler and responsible for another hero. Now, this is very surprising news- but also kind of intriguing. On one hand, they literally take Lucien's empire and make it their own (while finally coming full-circle with their childhood wish of living in the castle and having access to such luxury's), and they also get to cement their empire in the history of Albion even after they are long gone. Their heir will continue their legacy, and never again will Sparrow, or their family, ever have to know the cold unforgiving slums. No, not after Sparrow builds them a bright future full of conquest and innovation.

Anti Feysand isn't Anti Feyre + Rhys can't fuck you he isn't real!!
Y'all anons need to stop acting like posts where I say Feyre could have a different life where she's not shackled to acotar Elon Musk and his middle aged gang of one note wonders is an attack on FEYRE.
I also said Nesta deserves a better life than being shackled to a Bat Bitch Boi. Am I suddenly anti Nesta??
You think Feyre's life as a HL is better than Nesta's as a Valkyrie so you think I'm dissing Feyre when I say I want Feyre to be a Valkyrie and Nesta to work in politics.
And nowhere in that post did I say I want Nesta to be your Musty Musks HL btw. You think I'm giving Nesta the better story because that's what you want! You wanna be Musty Musks HL.
Personally I think sjm can't write politics for shit and when she does she always shows us the type of person she is in a bad way. I also think Feyre's life is boring so idk why so many of you are so sure that my preference for them switching narratives is somehow taking away from Feyre and giving to Nesta.
In reality if it were true then Feyre would have a whole other book of adventures instead of being the butt of sjm's plot incompetence! But you don't care about that because for you Feyre is your self insert and Feyre = Feysand means Rhys is your boyfriend.
- and again nowhere in the switch did I say I want Nesta to play house with the IC or have Roachman's babies!! I just said she suits politics more!
Feysand is just a ship. I can dislike the ship without disliking the character. You know what else I dislike? Nessian. Click on the anti Nessian tag and see. Does that mean every anti Nessian post is a anti Nesta post? Should I tag anti Nesta in my ACOSF Is An Incel Revenge Fantasy Post?? Just cause their mates? Just cause it's canon? IDGAF.
"It's so obvious, you're bias to Nesta" YES HOW DID YOU KNOW?? You've clearly been scrolling through my content and picked up on the secret clues and solved the puzzle.
"It's clear you haven't read the books in a while" Yes. I said that.
"You think Feyre isn't suited to political work and think she's more 'deserving' of being a Valkyrie" Yes. I said that. Also is being a Valkyrie supposed to be a bad thing all of a sudden?
"You just hate Feyre cause you ship Nesta and Rhysand" NO ACTUALLY. In fact I specifically pointed out that there is no weird ship jealousy. I've also said in other posts that I want Nesta to kill Rhysand. And that I only ever shipped the potential they had as characters.
I ship Rhysand and Amren! Rhys and Lucien too! I've also said I ship Feyre and Cassian - am I Nesta anti who wants Feyre to steal Nesta's mate? Or do you see Cassian as inferior to Rhysand so it doesn't bother you?
Y'all are letting your self insert delusions cloud your minds. Nobody is stealing your fictional man just cause they don't ship them with the character you see yourselves as!!

I'd love to know more about your take on Tamlin. I wouln't say I love him, he's done a lot of stupid shit. But I don't think he's as bad as people make him out to be. He's just a bit dumb sometimes lol.
Ohohoho, this is fun. (Edit after writing: sorry, it got really long, I didn't even get to the part where I talked about the tithe and the rest.)
I guess most of my liking for him comes from the fact that he was a character that was screwed up by S/JM. We all know the bad shit he has done to Feyre, locking her up, slut shaming her, etc, but then I remember Tamlin from the first book and he seems like a completely different character from the rest of the books.
He was retconed SO MANY TIMES.
He did offer to help Feyre to read and write, but that dumb bitch refuses rudely every single time claiming she didn't need his help. Tamlin sent her away when he thought she would be in harms way after he hadn't managed to get her to love him too, but she went UTM out of her free accord. He did try to help Feyre at UTM even after being sliced open with ash wood and bleeding all over the carpet and being week, with her understanding he couldn't do a lot, just for her, a book later, say he didn't help.
People love to bring up the way he acted UTM when than man was being watched and harassed every single second of every day, there wasn't a way for him to help Feyre without being killed or getting her killed too. So he sent Lucien, who he knew would be able to get to her. People forget that Rhysand spent 50 years gaining some sense of thrust from Amarantha to act so freely with his time.
No one talks about how he probably, and very realistically, was also super fucking traumatized by his life and what had happened UTM. He love Feyre. He watched her being demeaned and defiled every day by a man he shared history with. Watched her die. All the while not being able to do anything or he'd risk her safety too. It isn't far off to see why he thought that she was better safe locked up then out there to the shit storm that exists outside. What he did was messed up, but he thought it was the only way.
Then we all know how suddenly he became irredeemable on the later books bc S/JM has the habit of showing you explicitly who you should like and who you should hate. Oh, Rhys? You should like him, look at his tragic past and trauma that made him act like a dick to everyone and feel entitled. Oh, Tamlin? No no, you should hate him, look at his tragic past and trauma that made him act like a dick to everyone and feel entitled.
Rhys has done worse to Feyre than Tamlin, but it is ok because at the end of the day it was all justified. Him using her as a sex symbol was justified bc he did what he had to do. Him hiding her own high-risk pregnancy that would certainly kill her was justified bc he did what he had to. Him locking the IC inside Velaris at the risk it would be exposed if they left was fine bc it was justified. Him threatening to kill Nesta after she revealed to Feyre abt the pregnancy is ok, I guess bc he was angry.
Tamlin and Rhysand have almost done the same things. The difference is, Tamlin's actions weren't justified via a 6 page text block telling detail after detail how his life sucked ass.

The anti Lucien/Elucien girlies can stay pressed - you do not make Helion, one of the baddest bitches running around, be Lucien’s secret daddy, say he has High Lord potential AND give him powers he didn’t know he had (that were shockingly 😳 revealed when his MATE was in danger) just to end up making him some irrelevant annoyance in Elriel’s ~ epic, forbidden love story ~
We are NOT reading the same books, that much is clear. Elain and Azriel both have the potential to have amazing stories, just not if they end up together. An Elriel book is gonna have 5 lines of dialogue between them. And even that’s a generous estimate.
The way they need to try and make Lucien insignificant is something else. This male is set up to be a High Lord, has connections to all the Fae Courts and is fairly well liked by those in the courts yet they want to stick him in permanently in the human lands as if that's where he'll best be of use 😒 He has ties to Spring. SJM tells us that Spring was MADE for Elain. He has ties to Vassa and Vassa grew to care for Elain's father (who Elain was extremely close to). There are hints that both Lucien and Elain will end up back at the continent (considering Vassa's freedom is coming to an end) and there are hints that neither is living at the place where they're meant to be. What ties does Az have to Spring? What reason would Az have to head back to the continent when Vassa is called back to Koschei? Did Az ever meet Elain's father? There are so many things already connecting Elucien and they haven't even had a real conversation. Versus Elain and Az who really don't have anything holding them together. Plotwise or personality wise.

Bruh I should try my hand more at angst, shit's surprisingly fun to write.
I gift y'all the (spellchecked) bit o' Marasa I fiddled with last night. Set like... WELL into her storyline but time and the concept of coherent narrative are social constructs.
(tw PTSD, near panic attack ig?)
“Have you ever been to the Imperial City, Marasa?”
“Not… Well, sort of?” She shifted uncomfortably in her seat, knowing something like this would eventually come up, whether or not she was ready for it. It was only a matter of time.
“Wait. You, ah, weren’t at…” He hesitated, unsure of how to proceed. She understood the concern, reading it plainly from his face.
“Battle of the Red Ring? No, no I wasn’t.” She chewed her lip, eyes darting between her companions before falling back to the grimy table. The sickly-sweet scent of mead, hearth fire burning, Hulda’s horker stew over the flames. She tried to keep herself grounded. Tried and tried and tried and tried. Curious, worried, or who knew what, she could feel them watching. They clawed at her, tugged at things she thought long buried. Nails bit at her palms. Perhaps they deserved to know. Even if every fiber of her being screamed to run. Screaming so, so loud she could barely hear herself. Why was the room shaking?
She swallowed. “It was… I think, I think we were near Chorrol.” A deep breath in, hold it steady, breath out. You can do this. It’s just words. “I was part of a small contingent – we were scouting ahead, tracking enemy movements, positions, numbers – you get the idea.” There were eyes on her, the weight of them bearing down, her body to curling in on itself. She closed her own against them. “We were ambushed. It – I don’t know how many… If anyone else –”
“You don’t have to –” She shook her head, not sure if she could stop if she tried. The floodgates were already opening.
He watched her run a thumb along the deep, jagged lines cutting though her face, something she did frequently, he noted, especially when she thought no one was looking.
“Is that…?” Lucien motioned cautiously to his own face, curiosity taking over despite himself.
She scoffed bitterly despite the otherwise flattened way she spoke. “Courtesy of some Imperial bitch. No offense.” Pausing to gulp down the last of her drink, she sighed. “Nothing quite like having half your face… well, you know.” She made a gesture with her hand mimicking something hanging from her chin. The meaning was obvious. It made him sick to his stomach.
“I guess I should be grateful the legion’s sorry excuse for a healer even bothered trying to slap it back together at all when they hauled off whoever was still breathing. I wish…I – Gods, I wish they’d just let me…” She couldn’t. The words stuck in her throat. Trying just resulted in a choked, barely contained sob. She fell silent, listless eyes tracing the grooves in the tabletop. It wasn’t the room, her hands trembled as she set her bottle down.
“My friend, let us go get a drink.” Inigo interjected just as Lucien opened his mouth, tugging the smaller man to his feet and not-so-subtly guiding him to the bar. He tossed a sorrowful yet understanding glance back, knowing that some wounds always seemed to stay fresh. She didn’t look up.
A bottle slid into her view, sloshing half-full of cheap wine with a fresh reed poking from its opening. Her hands clutched it like a lifeline.
