Elaborate Lives - Chapter 23 - Theloversthedreamersandme82 - The Doctor Blake Mysteries [Archive of Our Own]
Summary: Jean attempts to return to work, but struggles. Relationships continue to develop, both between Lucien and Jean, and Matthew and Alice
Notes: Phew! It's been over a year since I updated this. I was writing for a different fandom for a few months, and that was time sensitive as I wanted to get it out before S2 aired, and then early this year my best friend died. I've just been focusing on getting through the day and haven't had much brain space left to write. I've also been discovering that I have ADHD. This update is nice and long for you to enjoy. Please be assured that unless I've actively said I'm not working on this anymore, I'm still intending to finish it, and don't harass me about it. I do this in my spare time, for free. I'm currently working on the next three chapters which have the bare bones written. If you've read any of my other stuff the scenes between Matthew and Alice may seem familiar. I've reused and rewritten some of the stuff from one of my other stories.
I'm giving up on ff.net for now. It's buggy and a lot harder to use. Sorry.

I feel like I'm misremembering things (which adhd could be true) and I can't recall WHERE in the series it is, but I could have sworn we saw Lucien's birthday
@olafur-neal and I are certain it was on some paperwork - so possibly somewhere in seasons 2 or 3, but could have also been in files somewhere throughout the series?
I know we as a fandom have debated on Jean's birthday, but has Lucien's birthday ever been given a date?

Before I got really into Lucien x Jean I really liked the Joy McDonald storyline. You can see the awakening of romantic possibility in Lucien and it’s great to watch. But I would have liked to see the Joy relationship run its course and not just have her killed off for plot convenience.

These two are still on my mind. I wish there were more adventures for them to explore and us to watch.

together again. ( lucien blake x reader )

gif belongs to me
Your daughter was weeks old when Lucien had to leave you behind with a tearful goodbye vowing to return to his family. But months went by without a word and as the war progressed you watched your daughter grow up without her father although you made sure she knew him by showing her photographs. When the war ended and Lucien never returned to Singapore, you presumed he was dead and as you had done, continued to be strong for your daughter's sake but years went by and you still wept for him now and then, staring at the wedding ring on your finger that he had put there.
Your daughter thrived each day and as she grew older you could see the features she had inherited from her father become more prominent. She was smart like him, brave with a curiosity that posed troublesome at times. And you always thought to yourself how much he would have adored her, and how much he had missed.
The letter was unexpected. It had been so long, and while you never met anyone else. solely focusing on your daughter, you were hesitant about responding to the letter that stated someone had asked for your records. Someone was trying to find you.
When you tried to dig deeper, to find out who was asking around about you, you tried not to get your hopes up but when the office told you it was a man claiming to be your husband, you couldn't ignore the possibility that he was alive. You never did receive word about what had become of him and when you were given the town in which the correspondence had come from, you dared to travel to find out the truth. If Lucien was alive, you were determined to find him.
The city of Ballarat rang familiar and as you traveled to the gold rush city, you recalled where you heard it before. The last known whereabouts of Lucien's father was there, and it became harder to keep your expectations low.
The first thing you did when you arrived was locate a hotel where your exhausted daughter could lay her head for the night and in the morning you started asking around for Lucien Blake, your heart racing when you entered a bar where the barman gave you the answers you needed. And you knew from the man's irritation with Lucien, that he had to be alive.
You took a taxi to the surgery, and residence of the local doctor, and were surprised when a woman answered the door. She sent you a polite smile as she opened the door wider, "Hello, can I help you?"
"I was looking for Luci- Doctor Blake." You corrected. "Is he here?"
"I'm afraid he is out at the moment. Would you care to wait? I'm sure he won't be long."
You sent the woman a small smile. "No, that's quite alright. Thank you..."
"Jean." She held a hand out and you shook it. "Pardon me, but I don't believe I have seen you around before."
"I'm staying at a hotel nearby. Room forty-six." You sent her a small smile as you bid goodbye, leading your daughter away and Jean closed the door, not thinking much of it until that evening when Lucien returned from his autopsy to deal with his living patients.
He was sitting in his study drinking his usual poison when she entered, and he looked up in surprise when she spoke.
"I want you to know that I wouldn't tell you this if I didn't think there was a strong possibility that it could be true."
Lucien nodded for her to continue.
"I think your wife is here."
Lucien almost dropped his glass, setting it on the desk, standing up as Jean recalled your interaction. "The little girl reminded me of someone but it wasn't until now that it really sunk in."
"What did she say?"
"She's staying at the hotel a few miles from here." Jean thought for a moment. "Room forty-six."
And in a flash, Lucien was rushing out of the door with Jean hot on his heels. "Wait!" She called out to him as he unlocked his car. "What are you going to do?"
"If she really is my wife, and she is here with my daughter," Lucien opened the door, meeting her gaze. "I'm going to bring them home."
"Doctor!" She called before he could get into the car. "Good luck."
Lucien sent her a small smile before getting into his car and driving off, faster than legally allowed to, but with the adrenaline pumping through his veins in that moment, mixed with the alcohol, he paid no mind to it as he raced to the hotel where you had told Jean you were staying.
It was eight o'clock and the door were locked at ten so when he arrived the reception was manned by a woman who was surprised by him bursting in the door and weary when he asked about a guest.
"Who is staying in room forty-six?" He rested his hands on the desk, impatiently striking the wood with his right hand when the woman eyed him. "Which way is it?"
"Up the stairs, on your left." She pointed to the door that led to the right-wing of the hotel and Lucien rushed off, hearing his heart pounding in his ears as he ran down the corridors, searching for the room number.
He swallowed thickly as he stared at the golden numbers, smoothing his waistcoat before knocking on the door. Less than a minute later, it unlocked and you peered around curiously, your eyes widening when you saw Lucien standing in the corridor.
"Oh my -" You covered your mouth as tears formed in your eyes.
Lucien let out a watery chuckle, his blue eyes tearing up as he took in your appearance as you opened the door wider. "Y/N."
His voice broke your staring and you shot forward, hugging him tightly. Lucien returned the embrace, closing his eyes as he breathed in the scent that brought back glorious memories before he was deployed.
"I thought I would never see you again." You breathed, pulling away slightly just so you could look at him again. "I never knew - you never returned - I thought you had -"
"I told you I would come back." He smiled placing a hand on your cheek. "You still look as you did when I first met you."
A smile crept on your lips. "I doubt that." You closed your eyes when he kissed you, wrapping your arms around his neck as you pulled away. He rested his forehead on yours and you smiled softly. "It feels so strange."
"I know it's been a long time -"
"I was referring to the beard." You jested. "But I will."
You pecked his lips, taking his hands from your cheeks as you met his gaze. "Come inside before people talk."
"I'm afraid I've already made an impression with the locals in that regard." He said, following you inside, pausing when his blue eyes landed on the bed where your daughter was sleeping.
You closed the door quietly, giving him time to look at her, knowing he had gone through the unimaginable, missing out on many milestones. "She's beautiful." He spoke up after a few moments. "Does she -" He sucked in a breath at the thought of his daughter not knowing who he was.
You moved to stand beside him. "I told her stories about you every night. I showed her pictures. She knows you're her father." You placed a hand on his arm, seeing the tears in his eyes, feeling fresh tears pricking your own as you brought him into a warm embrace, closing your eyes when his body shook as he held in his pain so he wouldn't wake your daughter.
"Do you want me to wake her up so you can talk -" You trailed off when he lifted his head from your shoulder.
"No, no." He shook his head, wiping his tears as he sucked in a breath, trying to regain his composure but when you wiped his cheeks with your thumbs he closed his eyes, knowing that he never had to hide how he felt with you for you always knew what he was feeling or thinking. "Let her sleep."
You nodded softly, mirroring the small smile he sent you as he took a seat on the armchair, taking your hand as he pulled you towards him so you landed on his lap. You placed a hand on his cheek, gazing down at the man you would have waited a lifetime for, his eyes closing at the chill of your wedding ring that you had never removed since he slid it on your finger. "I love you."
Lucien placed a hand over your warm hand that rested on his cheek, his blue eyes rising to meet your gaze as he sent you a smile that grew as it sunk in that you were really here with him. "I love you too. Always." He turned his head, closing his eyes as he kissed your pal and you smiled softly, leaning into him, resting your head on his shoulder as you settled into a comfortable position, held in his tight embrace that reminded him you were there as you both observed your daughter as she slept while you told him stories about her growing up.
It had been a long time but you finally found your way back to each other and when you fell asleep in his arms, Lucien vowed that nothing would take you away again. He would not miss a single moment with his daughter, and he would savor every minute he could with you knowing that your relationship had survived the unimaginable - a war that had taken him away from you and your daughter. But in the city of Ballarat he would make a life for the three of you and he would ensure it was a great one.

“And you’re still at Ballarat West” is still the most damning thing Lucien has ever said.
