Depois do sucesso de Double Play: James Benning and Richard Linklater, Gabe Klinger filmou a sua primeira longa de acção no Porto, cidade que dá o título ao filme que tem vindo a percorrer o mundo entre estreias e festivais, e em Portugal fez parte da selecção do LEFFEST, onde foi apresentado pelo realizador, pela actriz Lucie Lucas, pelo produtor Rodrigo Areias e pelo produtor executivo Jim Jarmush. A conversa começaria pela evocação do actor Anton Yelchin, prematuramente desaparecido, e que teve aqui o seu derradeiro papel.

Gabe: A única pessoa cujo entusiasmo e empenho em relação a este projecto foram sempre inabaláveis foi o Anton. Olhando para este filme agora, não sou eu o seu autor, na verdade, o filme pertence-lhe. Deu-me a mim e a todos os outros a confiança para fazer isto.

Conseguia estar completamente dentro da personagem e depois fazer piadas e fazer-nos rir o tempo todo, e pregar partidas às pessoas. Fazia tudo com uma urgência impressionante. Regressava ao quarto do hotel e via filmes todas as noites. Era uma pessoa muito séria mas essa era também, de certo modo, a sua inocência em relação à vida. Quando fui ter com ele para lhe falar do filme, que era uma coisa muito pequena, não quis acreditar quando ele, que tinha feito 30 fimes e era o Anton Yelchin, me levou a sério. Mas estava disposto a embarcar na aventura, a arriscar, e sabia que havia algo naquele personagem que lhe iria permitir mostrar a sua força.

A utilização de diferentes formatos foi planeada ou resultou de várias experiências?

Gabe: Dos três formatos, o Super 8 é o mais barato, por isso pudemos filmar bastante. Tínhamos três câmaras, e por vezes eu dava uma delas a um membro da equipa, à Lucie, ou ao Anton, para que fossem filmar qualquer coisa. E algumas dessas coisas acabaram por entrar no filme. É essa a liberdade que se tem com a Super 8, não é preciso uma equipa de iluminação, deixamo-nos ir, sem grandes preocupações. De resto, filmámos em película e, portanto era esse o ambiente no décor. Queríamos que todos estivessem atentos a essa espécie de tradição, às texturas do filme. A câmara de 35mm é enorme, pesada, exige uma planificação. Os movimentos de câmara são diferentes, e por isso a narrativa é também diferente. Não se pode contar uma história da mesma forma em Super 8 e em 35mm.

Lucie: Nem sequer é a mesma forma de representar. Em 8mm sabemos que temos menos imagem, por isso a nossa representação é “maior”, em 16mm é mais “pequena” e em 35mm é muito muito muito mais “pequena”. Ao mesmo tempo, é como um documentário, consegue penetrar na intimidade.

Houve muitas alterações ao argumento durante a rodagem?

Lucie: Durante os ensaios íamo-nos apercebendo de que alguns diálogos não eram realmente necessários, e mantivemos o essencial. E depois, na montagem, o Gabe também retirou algumas coisas, preservando a essência.

Gabe: Creio que outro dos meus mentores cinematográficos, Richard Linklater, disse: “Tens de descascar o filme como uma cebola”. Ir retirando as várias camadas, até chegar ao âmago.
