Barry running to save the world is what we should have got in Crisis with OUR Barry instead of Earth 90 Barry.

Speaking of that WestAllen scene echoed Earth 90 Barry thinking of Tina before sacrificing himself except ours was on a grander scale

Yeah, I feel like it's hard to compare, because Westallen's moment was just the epitome of love transcends spacetime. Barry and Iris are the definition of that trope in every sense. But yeah, the callback obviously of these Flashes thinking of their loves when running.

So while I agree with that anon that Westallen have not always been given the material and respect they deserve, especially in the last three seasons, I’d be interested in what ships those detractors they mentioned are saying are so much better and I’m side-eyeing the real reasons anyone might express shock that westallen is one’s favorite ship. (Cause we all know there are a lot of #those reasons) I just think westallen is very rare because they got married somewhat early in the show’s run/their own canon relationship, and a lot of shows don’t actually write married couples at all (or only do so for a brief time before they break up). I still think the westallen portrayal of what a loving, solid marriage looks like in s4 is one of the best, if not the best, that I’ve ever seen on tv. And while it hasn’t been as strong after that, there are still great moments that reinforce for me that this is the kind of marriage you would aspire to. Any marriage takes a lot of work, and in fiction a special kind of work to make them interesting and believable. None of this is to excuse the ways tptb have let westallen and us down - I always want more and better for them - but I think it’s unfair to compare them to unmarried ships at this point, and anyone who can’t see why they’re great may not truly be interested in the kind of love story they’re offering imo. It’s super rare and special!

So, I didn’t realize that anon had said that they thought the execution was terrible (I went back and corrected my answer). Y’all will have to bear with me: I’m currently on vacation, and I left my laptop back home, so I’m answering asks on my phone. Which means I occasionally miss things, especially in lengthier asks.

Imo, when it comes to Westallen, the execution actually has been pretty great. They had the slow burn, but also they’ve been in love with each other since childhood. They’re relationship development has been really great, and the show chose to focus on their journey as a couple, instead of falling into tired tropes, of will they/won’t they. We get to see them as a married couple, and how their love only grows stronger over the seasons. Like any show, the writing isn’t going to be perfect, but I think they’re journey has been overall great. I would argue that the issue, really, is that TPTB shortchanges Barry and Iris, including some of their important milestones, and when we ought to be seeing more of them, we often don’t get enough Westallen scenes. That’s where I’d argue is the issue: that Westallen are shortchanged, and that they and we, as fans, deserve better. The Flash captured lightning in a bottle with Westallen, and the fact that they don’t take advantage of that nearly enough is perpetually baffling.

I think if anyone is going to express shock when someone says that Westallen is their favorite ship, that is itself eyebrow-raising. Folks don’t have to like WA, but failing to see why someone would like the ship, especially given that they are such a classic love transcends spacetime love story, is highly suspect.

As someone who loves reading books I just love that westallen has done so many tropes; best friends to lovers, soulmates in every universe, true love’s kiss and so on. The fact that Iris, a black female character gets to have this type of unconditional, escapes definition love is amazing to see. It’s no wonder the racists are always mad because they’re so used to white female characters being in this space 🙄

I love reading books too, nonnie, and I’m big on tropes, so I also really love that they get all these classic romantic tropes. Best friends to lover. Love transcends spacetime. Electric love. Home Sweet Home. The Power of Love. I love all of it. And yes, it is really important that Iris gets to experience this true, unconditional love, because Black women have historically not been centered in love stories in this way. This representation is so important.
