I am thinking of @la-pheacienne ‘s annoyance with Les Miserables the musical interspersing Marius and Cosette’s love ballad “A Heart Full of Love” with Eponine singing about how she pines after Marius. It takes the focus away from the main couple and makes it about Eponine.

I am thinking of similar scenes in my hyperfixations. It is interesting that Nihal and Behlül’s “love scene” at the Island repeatedly has Beşir cough in the background. Nihal remembers an idealized version of this scene after the fact but actually it was a stressful event for her while it was happening: She was suspicious of being fooled by Behlül, afraid of the dark and worried for Beşir. But in her memory it becomes an idyllic scene of “happy betrotheds”.

Beşir’s coughs remind us that it wasn’t meant to be an idyllic love scene.

Or for a less elegant example, in Magnificent Century the love scenes of Nigar and Ibrahim are always juxtaposed with scenes of Hatice giving birth, Hatice lonely and worried etc. Because, you know, adultery is bad 😡 (To be fair, the reverse also occasionally happens with Nigar looking sad in the love scenes of Hatice and Ibrahim).

Anyway I agree that Les Miserables the musical misstepped by centering Eponine in “A Heart Full of Love” if Marius/Cosette is meant to be a heartwarming straightforward romance.
