Taurel had been particularly silent since returning from Therinfal Redoubt, though there had been no shortage of things to do. The camp was buzzing with energy both good and bad with the arrival of the remaining Templars. The Herald had passed his judgment, firm and solemn, and they were setting themselves up while he vanished. 

But Velawyn knew where to find him. She also knew the look on his face moments after his judgment: regret. 

Taurel Lavellan wasn’t too far from camp, sitting over the frozen lake by the lumber yard, a pile of rocks assembled next to him to hurl onto the ice. He wasn’t dressed for the cold, shivering still against the wind as pale blonde hair sat over his face. “I... I made a mistake.”

“I thought... I thought it was a trap from that Magister, to help the rebels. I was going to-- I thought we’d have time to better vet it, I...” and they were dead. They were most likely all dead. 

He was chewing so hard on his cheek that blood was dripping into the snow. “Gods forgive me.”

Inquisitor Ixchel Lavellan | art by @whoisnotmyname

I commissioned Mumford for a portrait and item collection for my Inquisitor and I highly recommend you do the same! I'm so happy with how my wall of muscle Champion turned out, and her items are rendered better than I could have imagined! Seeing them all laid out on her Champion's Standard makes them feel so real!

Item descriptions under the cut.

Champion's Standard. Behind everything is Ixchel's Standard, which Vivienne designed to reflect her Dalish identity and her presence as the Inquisitor. It features a modified version of the Dirthamen vallaslin, and the Inquisition eye/sword.

Chromatic Greatsword (modified). In my fic, Ixchel discovers a stash of ancient weapons from Andruil's own armory. Among them was a chromatic greatsword, which she modified with schematics from the Sulevin Blade to honor the Dalish warriors who came before her. She can deactivate the glowing blade when not in use.

Longsword. Someday she will lose her arm and no longer be able to wield the heavy greatswords that made her career. Instead, she adapts to one-handed use of more mundane blades. She knows she will lose her arm, so she carries this with her and practices with it in preparation for that day.

Dalish Banner Crown. This was something she's had since day 1 of my Inquisition playthroughs and has become synonymous with her leading troops into battle. She carries the banner with her against their foes, and brings it with her to audiences with human monarchs to make it impossible for them to forget she is a member of a race they tried to subjugate and exterminate.

Hart's Decorated Bridle. The people of Halamshiral's alienage, a mix of elves and impoverished humans, presented a special white hart to her when she arrived for the ball at the Winter Palace. He was given to her with ribbons and paintings on him to symbolize her Dalish roots, but in the traditions of Orlesian alienages. He is a proud and fancy beast and his bridle matches him.

Dorian's Talking Crystal. It no longer works--it's from her first life, in a world and timeline that no longer exist, but she keeps it anyway as a reminder. Even until the day she died, Dorian tried to hold on to her, his dearest friend.

Health Potions. Every good hero needs them!

Flemeth's Gifted (Mask). In my fic, Briala received an Orlesian courtesan's mask from a mysterious witch with directions to give it to Ixchel. The mask helped Ixchel blend in with the human crowd in Wycome on her infiltration mission. Only if one looks very, very closely can you see the subtle carvings of Mythal's own vallaslin, marking Ixchel as Dalish--and, perhaps, marking Flemeth's designs upon her future.

Spilled Deathroot Potion. Ixchel began her story with this potion--but she will not meet that end again.

Ardent Blossoms (Marigold Crown). In my fic, marigolds are an ancient symbol of Champions' dedication to their causes and their lords. Ghilan'nain wore them in honor of Andruil when she was but her honored priestess. The cempasúchil symbolize a bond to, and beyond, death. Cole found these, the Ardent Blossom, and Ixchel has named herself Champion of the People--not Champion of a lord, or a cause, but Champion of all those who need someone to fight for them. They have become a symbol everywhere of fighting for equal rights, and others wear them in their hair to show that they're willing to take the fight to the end.

Gingko Earrings. Ginkgo symbolize hope, and hope for peace, in my continuity. They've become a symbol she wears often in my art.

Halla Horn Comb. Ixchel was actually adopted by the Dalish Clan Lavellan, after growing up as a feral child in the wilderness. One of the dearest memories she has of the Clan is of the First, Terinelan, teaching her how to braid her hair. She has kept the halla horn comb ever since.

Hair Ribbon. Same as the above. In Dalish tradition, she made this ribbon and embroidered it herself.

Puzzle Ring. Given to her in the future of my fic by Solas. It's a puzzle for her ingenuity, but it's also a promise of dedication and return.

Raven Feather. Symbolizing Dirthamen, and her role as "Kin-Finder," a great title given to her upon receiving her vallaslin and acknowledging that she has uncovered, and returned, so many elven secrets lost to history due to the hardships they faced since the fall of Elvhenan.

im totally willing to accept that some ppl are super critical of the vallaslin removal and that some ppl are critical without knowing the context it exists in - bc ppl love to be hyper-critical of solas and his actions and assume the worst case scenario all the time

but also, i think the 'cruelty' that gets brought up isn't strictly or exclusively related to the vallaslin removal as such: it's more the fact that he offers, and regardless of her choice, he immediately breaks up with her. yes, he's giving her a choice, and yes, he values the freedom to choose - but that doesn't mitigate the fact that right after he ends the relationship

from his pov we can see why. but in-game, within the timeline, and from lavellan's pov... he tells her something incredibly traumatic about her people's history, offers to remove the evidence, and regardless of her decision, he leaves her. it's even right there in canon with cole's dialogue after the fact

if she kept it: She feels her face, marked, marred without malice. She didn't know. She thinks it's why you walked away.

if she let him remove it: She is bare-faced, embarrassed, and she doesn't know. She thinks it's because of her.

players knowing his reasons doesn't preclude this from hurting lavellan in either situation. going from a strictly-canon pov, lavellan associates her vallaslin with solas ending their relationship - that's the cruelty. he can't tell her the truth, we as players get that, but it's a direct correlation for her. and if she lets him remove it, someone who has grown up dalish, who is culturally dalish regardless of the specifics of her feelings about them, would very likely feel entirely unmoored - i think that's what ppl are mostly driving at when they talk about this process. bc she loses so much in one moment: 1) her people's history, 2) possibly the primary marker of her cultural identity, 3) and the man she loves

again: she canonically associates her vallaslin with why he left. ppl taking that and running with it aren't being unduly critical of solas or lavellan. but even if it was pure fanon, it's reasonable to consider how losing or keeping her vallaslin would impact her, both personally and within the larger world

Also some Jazztale Chasriel. Didn’t have those two beans eather in a while. I’m kinda happy about how the dynamic with this one turned out to be honest ^///^

Still having quite the shitty real-life time over here, thus my apologies that I get way less done currently. I might talk about details once this mess is over.....which is hopefully soon. Kinda would appreciate some norma ass average lazy day again for a change to the current desasters -.-

Okay so for the Chosen One Support group we have: Bilbo, Cloud, Dean, Sam, Cas, Katniss, Roy, Ed, Alphonse, Hawke, the Warden, Inquisitor Lavellan, Shepard, Komodo siblings, Hellboy, Aang, Izuku, Anakin, Harry, Percy, Naruto and Lloyd.

I am very invested in this lore and have to know who the first few in the group was.

BRB losing my mind over a shitpost I made a few days ago now having lore.

Anyway

The lore is all pretty flexible as there’s a million universes and possibilities for groups but for the “main” one it’s probably something like:

Like first arrived? It would probably be the ones out of time. Link and Aang were probably either there before their exceedingly long naps and reappeared after waking OR were always there and served as a sort of welcoming committee/please stop screaming we know it’s weird crew as the others arrived. The older ones would be next with Bilbo being among them as he sort of tripped his way into being Chosen. Then as they time goes by more and more kids keep showing up in ones and twos younger and younger as they go. Harry and Naruto are the youngest as they were infants/not even born yet when chosen

First first was probably Link as he’s like twenty in the botw timeline before he god put in a vat for a century but Aang wasn’t far behind

Fic Recommendations

Here are a list of the fanfictions that I have either read or are currently reading and think that should get more attention!

“Not Another Dragon Age Fanfic (The Lone Wolf Cries)” by dork_trash94 Kieran finds himself suddenly transported to Thedas, and vows to keep a close eye on the Dread Wolf to stop him from betraying them once again. As he finds out, a ‘close eye’ unfortunately means actually being close - and it doesn’t help that the game’s timeline is changing, either. Lots of pining, sprinkle of yearning, some funky Time-bending, and a frequently flustered Solas. (via @fen-harelapologist94 on tumblr)

They’ve also just released the first chapter of their newest fanfic!

“Tea Leaves and Sweet Dreams” by dork_trash94 Kieran was not prepared to meet Solas - the infamous and reclusive TA for Professor Flemeth’s Magic Theory and Application class - in person, in his tea shop. Much less the same academic program.

I am currently in the midst of reading this next fanfic but I positively adore the author’s use of language! Dwarves are not usually my favorite fantasy culture but I have so grown to love the Aeducan and Brosca storytelling here. It is the first part of a four part series so we are all in for a treat!

“Of Diamonds and Dust” by @dragonologist_phd Marja Aeducan and Darvis Brosca lead lives as different as one could possibly imagine. I have been reading “South” for over a year now and I need it to get widespread to a wider audience. His use of imagery and their idea of Tolkien’s world is so refreshing. They also have a lot of other LoTR fanfics that you should check out, too!

“South” by oxbridge The Grey Company rides south: Through Eregion, Dunland, and beyond.

“Dead Pasts and Dread Futures” by youworeblue The Inquisitor’s heart broke after the Exalted Council when her family of friends scattered to the winds. She was emptied of hope as Solas’s power and reach grew. Left with a dead past and dreading the future, Ixchel Lavellan lay down and chose not to wake up. As the Veil began to unravel, and the fabric of reality tore apart at the seams, a desperate ally sacrificed everything to give her a second chance. And Ixchel will never forgive him. “Keepers” by AkbalKiin A necromage in the plains causes a stir to the local folk. The Inquisition investigates and recruits an elf, a former Keeper, into their rank for his knowledge on Dalish archaeology and his stealth abilities. The Inquisition tests his skills as they close in on Red Templars as part of a plan to thwart Samson and Corypheus. (via @nightmarist on tumblr)

“Une Autre Histoire D'amour” (series) by fondofthehowes Exploring the relationship between Étienne Montmartre, an Orlesian warden better suited to be a bard, and Cassandra Pentaghast. For a woman that long pined for the concept of a man that would sweep her off her feet, she never anticipated that she would not only find it, but that he would be far more than that too.

“Would That I (O Unrepentant, Faithless, Treacherous)” by @thiefbird Saved from Alistair’s vengeance to presumably die to the Archdemon, Loghain Mac Tir is at a loss to find himself alive after the end of the Blight.

"The Lark and the Crow" by @dujour_13 Woljif had to admit, it was a pretty sweet deal. Why not follow through and see what an honest quid pro quo felt like? A couple of days ago he had been chained up, for lack of a proper jail cell, in the moldy basement of the Defender’s Heart tavern, furiously concocting dead-end escape plots. The worst thing about it was crouching in a dark corner on a hard, cold floor and gazing up the stairs where light, laughter, the scent of food, and sometimes even music drifted down, out of his reach. Perpetually out of his reach. Until, of course, this golden-headed half-elf had come down the stairs and made him a deal. (via @dujour13 on tumblr)

...saw a post saying that we should use poetic/descriptive ship names more, and you know what, why not. let's try making some for my own ships and maybe finally establishing their ship tags in the process

(note: I'm going to be referring to a specific type of ship names as "BG3-like". I know the BG3 fandom probably didn't invent those but that's where I know them from and that's what the post was referencing, so that's the name they get)

Pillars of Eternity

Edér x Selene - I saw "tide and shore" on that character dynamics poll and I don't think I can come up with anything that beats that.

Aloth x Lorenzo - honestly not sure. The best ones I have are "mirror image" (because their dynamic is about The Parallels and also, wizard reference) and a BG3-like "spellsong" (because. wizard and chanter) but I'm not too attached to either of those. More research required.

Dragon Age

Zevran x Kyana Amell - my absolute first thought was "ill omen" because. uh. he's a Crow. and she's ominous. and if you're not from their friend circle seeing them together is probably a sign of bad luck for you, specifically. I could go BG3-like and call them "crowtower", which sounds pretty metal, but a little less personal to me. (I like the name combination method for them better though, "Zevkya" just sounds cute)

Sera x Evelyn Trevelyan - "lightning in a bottle" (Evelyn is a lightning-specced mage; Sera is a Tempest; both have a chaotic streak that feels less like a problem and more like fun when they're together). this one was kind of a stroke of genuis tbh.

Dorian x Neilar Lavellan - "water and wine". this one has layers. the first layer is Dorian being used to Comfort and Civilization and Neil being a Chronically Outside type. the second layer is the religious/miraculous imagery. the third layer is kind of mean because it references their worst moments (Dorian trying to drink away his problems - wine; Neilar losing control to the Well of Sorrows - water), but no one said that the ship names had to be nice. or did we all forget "ill omen" just a few seconds ago

Blackwall(Thom Rainier) x May Cadash - god, I really want to come up with something that would reference the "white king, black pawns" line from Leverage, just for the timeline where she becomes a righteous mob boss. "white queen, black knight"? "black queen, white knight"? kind of a mouthful but the reference is worth it in my book.

...I don't know how to end this post. I'm putting it in the main tags so. uh. reblog with your own poetic ship names and their explanations? I'd read that. it's pretty fun to make these, actually. also if anyone has suggestions for a ship name for Aloth and a death godlike chanter, send help
