Reaction to RWBY Crew Commentary V9
Alright, as is tradition at this point, got my copy of the Blu Ray so let's get started.
Okay, first of all, before I even hop into the commentary, I love that the title screen for the menu is Ruby falling through that mural in the OP. That is... That is so cool man! Whoever thought of that... I love you. You're a genius.
So we start off with Kerry, Eddy, Laurie (hope I spelled that right). And addressing how they had to work mostly from home on this volume and the challenges that caused.
Yeah, quick reunion was the right call. I mean, we did the Team RWBY split for two volumes (4 and 5) and then again in V8. Don't keep the girls apart again.
Little origins! Give me! Someone that starts how Ruby started...
I mean... yeah, I assumed Ruby knew about Penny from Weiss. Like... duh.
Same peeps for episode 2 but also with Paula? Again, I hope I heard that right.
Return of Blake the Book Nerd.
Yang and Blake kind of dig the Ever After, Weiss hates it, and Ruby is lost in her thoughts.
Luci improvised Little's little song.
Oh, Yang might still think this is a dream so nothing here matters... That's an idea. Everyone grieves differently...
Man I love Weiss in this episode.
"We can't have her be the butt of every joke." .... I want to see what they cut.
Episode 3! We've picked up Conner, Dustin, and Kiersi! Lost Laura and Paula.
The animation is so good man.
Putting away depression to help her friends.
Prince Trauma(TM)
Neo Scary.
Episode 4. Kerry, Eddy, Miles and Dustin.
Curious talk.
Self critic!
"She learned her lesson in the end, right?" "Oh, I'd certainly say so."
"If there's something Ruby can blame herself for, do it!"
"Cat wanted to scope out which one of the girls was weakest."
Shout out to the VAs!!
Chapter 5: Kerry, Eddy, Paula, Kiersi!
Cat is dismissive of WBY. Focuses only on Ruby.
The Blacksmith: The Ever After itself is now reaching out to Ruby.
Walking the line between the audience knowing that Ruby needs help and WBY not quite understanding how bad it is.
Making sure the emblem wasn't on Ruby's model after was a pain.
"Oh no, he's hot."
Episode 6: Kerry, Eddy, Yssa, Laura.
The difference between Jaune having already lived for many years with this guilt in the Ever After and RWBY who are still fresh.
How protective Kerry is of the Bee scene is amazing.
There was an idea that the vision Alyx saw was that she saw that someone in her party was going to keep her from returning home, and it ultimately is herself before the Cat kills her.
Ya'll have already seen other posts about Kerry and crew's thoughts on the Bee scene and what it means for the Yang and Blake so I won't go into all that because, yeah, can't say it better.
"They were actually in front of each other the whole time." Excuse me!
"Now she has to step up again." ....Ow.
Episode 7: Kerry, Eddy, Miles, Dustin? I think that's what I heard.
How the meeting went: "Well he can't have been doing nothing, that would be really disappointing." *Beat of silence* "Oh, that would be really disappointing." Evil geniuses.
Stuck in the pattern of trying to be the hero. Both incredibly busy and doing nothing.
"He's more lost than ever."
Fighting on a hill. I'd never considered the complications of that either.
Miles and Lindsey kill this scene man. It's so good.
Episode 8 (oh boy): Kerry, Eddy, Miles, Paula, Kiersi.
Had to cut an episode due to scheduling and budget. Scary to have to rework that.
Mad Hatter's Tea Party.
The flowers on the Tea Cups are Forget-Me-Nots.
Imposter Syndrome.
Neo landed on the Brother's Acre.
"Neither one of them won that fight." Neo and Ruby.
Episode 9: Kerry, Eddy, Yssa, Dustin, Kiersi.
Blacksmith is a therapist.
Weiss is the best, true.
What do the characters want?
Episode 10: Kerry, Eddy, Yssa, Kiersi, Dustin.
Aw, their kids contributed some of the background drawings for Yang and Ruby's room.
Furious Cat.
"She's the self that chose herself." "She emerges herself but different."
"I'm so happy." I love how much they love this show.
"How do we not redeem her but give her this sort of neutral path?"
Oh man, I'm tearing up before Somewhat even shows up.
Somewhat is no longer defined by having one purpose.
Dude, they keep talking about not wanting this to be filler so they had the backstory of the Brothers but I will always stand by that if the characters learn and grow as people then it will never be filler. So from the beginning this was never going to be filler.
"One small kindness, in one small moment, led to such a marvelous transformation." That line always destroys me.
Whelp, that's a wrap on the commentary for V9. Now... we wait.

A Double Dose of 50 Years of Island Books: Rachel Linden / Martha Brockenbrough
Tumblr media
Rachel Linden is a novelist and international aid worker whose adventures in over fifty countries around the world provide excellent grist for her writing. She is the author of The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie, The Enlightenment of Bees, Becoming the Talbot Sisters, and Ascension of Larks. Currently Rachel lives with her family on a sweet little island near Seattle, WA where she enjoys creating stories about strong women facing big challenges, travel, food, and second chances at love. She promises her readers a happy, or at least very hopeful, ending and infuses each of her stories with a touch of magical realism. Her newest novel, Recipe for a Charmed Life, comes out in early 2024.
Miriam: Welcome, Rachel. Let's start with your first visit to Island Books. Where were you in your career then, and what stood out about the store?
Rachel: When I think of Island Books, I feel I can sum it up best in the word "inviting". I first visited Island Books when my second novel, Becoming the Talbot Sisters, was about to release. If I remember correctly, I came bearing homemade cookies my husband and son had made, and an advanced reader copy of my new book. I was hoping to meet some of the staff and see if they'd be interested in stocking my book. I was instantly charmed by the special Island Books vibe. I love independent bookstores and feel so fortunate that we have so many in our area. Island Books has always been one of my very favorites because of the wonderful, friendly and knowledgeable staff (with fabulous owner Laurie at the helm), the inviting places to sit and stay awhile, and such an excellent and extensive selection of books. They were so warm and welcoming to me on my first visit, and I continue to greatly enjoy and appreciate their enthusiastic support and care for local authors like me! I love every chance I get to be at Island Books because I always feel so welcomed. It's an inviting, enjoyable space with true book lovers, and for a bookworm like me, that's basically my definition of paradise!
Miriam: Rachel, you can't drop a teaser about bringing cookies to Island Books and not share the specific recipe. When many of us think of you, we think, foodie book club, mmmm.....Will you share which cookies you brought to that first event here on the blog? We can make them official "Rachel-Linden's-Take-a-Trip-to-Island-Books cookies" or something.
Rachel: Absolutely! I can't remember exactly which cookies I brought the first time I visited Island Books, to be honest! But here's a recipe for some amazing lemon bars that I know I brought along with an advanced reader copy of The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie!  These delicious lemon bars are super easy and super yummy! I enjoy this recipe from one of my favorite baking sites, Sally's Baking Addiction! I amended it slightly, but mostly it is her recipe.
Rachel-Linden's-Take-a-Trip-to-Island-Books-Luscious-Lemon-Bars
Ingredients
SHORTBREAD CRUST
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups + 2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
optional: you can add a bit of the zest of the lemon to the crust for added lemon flavor
LEMON FILLING
2 cups granulated sugar
6 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
6 large eggs
1 cup lemon juice (about 4-5 large lemons)
powdered sugar for dusting over the top of the bars when cooked and cooled
optional: add a bit of the zest of the lemon to the filling for an added kick of lemony flavor
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 325°F. Carefully line the bottom and sides of a 9×13 glass baking pan (do not use metal for these bars) with parchment paper, leaving the paper hanging over the sides so you can easily lift the finished bars out. This is an important step and makes cutting the bars much easier!).
Make the crust: Mix the melted butter, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt together in a large bowl. Add the flour and stir to completely combine. The dough will be quite thick. Press firmly into your prepared pan, making sure the layer of crust is nice and even with no holes. Bake for 20-22 minutes or until you see the edges of the crust are lightly browned. Remove from the oven. Using a fork, poke holes all over the top of the warm crust (careful not to poke all the way through the crust). This helps the filling stick and holds the crust in place. Set crust aside.
Make the filling: Sift the sugar and flour together in a large bowl. Whisk in the eggs, and then add the lemon juice (and zest if using) and stir until completely combined.
Pour filling over the warm crust. Bake the bars for 22-26 minutes or until the center is relatively set and no longer jiggles. (You can give the pan a light tap with an oven mitt to test that the filling is set.) Remove bars from the oven and cool completely at room temperature. It is recomemnded to cool them for about 2 hours at room temperature, then stick in the refrigerator for 1-2 more hours until fairly chilled.
Once cool, lift the parchment paper out of the pan using the overhang on the sides. Dust the bars with confectioners’ sugar and cut into squares before serving. Enjoy!
Miriam: Thank you! Okay, one last question, now that I'm thinking about The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie. One of the big messages in that book is that instead of looking backward, we should make the best of things and focus on the road ahead. With that theme in mind, as we head toward our store's 50th anniversary, what do you think the road ahead looks like for indie bookstores?
Rachel: Looking forward, I believe indie bookstores will continue to thrive because of the amazing connections they provide between people and great stories. In an increasingly digital world, to walk into an independent bookstore, talk to smart, book loving booksellers, and walk out with amazing stories in our hands...that personal experience cannot be replaced. For authors, independent bookstores offer wonderful opportunities for us to make personal connections with book lovers—both bookselling professionals and readers. I think Island Books does this so beautifully, and what they offer will continue to be valued by readers and authors alike.
Miriam: Thanks so much for stopping by our blog, Rachel. We always love hearing from you.
To our community—if you make Rachel's Lemon Bars, send us a picture! In the next installment of Island Books, I'll be talking to...
50 Years of Island Books: Martha Brockenbrough
Tumblr media
Martha Brockenbrough (rhymes with broken toe) is the author of Frank and the Masked Cat and more than twenty books for young readers, including YA fiction and nonfiction, picture books, a middle grade mystery, and a chapter book series. Her next nonfiction book for teens, Future Tense, will hit shelves in 2024.
A faculty member at Vermont College of Fine Arts, she's also the founder of National Grammar Day (every March 4), and she's written game questions for Cranium and Trivial Pursuit.
The former editor of MSN.com, Martha has interviewed lots of celebrities, including the Jonas Brothers and Slash. Her work has been published in a variety of places, including The New York Times. She also wrote an educational humor column for the online encyclopedia Encarta for nine years.
She lives in Seattle with her family. Her favorite kind of food is Indian, although Thai runs a close second. Besides writing, she likes dogs, cats, cooking, weight-lifting, and laughing.
Miriam: I'm so excited to have you here, Martha, especially because my 10-year-old twins LOVED To Catch a Thief and we are big fans of yours. Let's start with your first visit to Island Books. Where were you in your career then, and what stood out about the store?
Martha: That makes my day! The book is set in a slightly distressed Seabrook—if you ever go, the kids will recognize some of the sights!
Meanwhile, I can’t even remember the first time I went into Island Books. I’m a Bellevue native and only a few years older than the store. So let’s just say I have no memories of life without Island Books. As an author, though, I think one of the first events I attended was for the wonderful Jennifer Longo debut novel, Six Feet Over It, inspired in part by her life growing up at a cemetery. My first event with Island Books was a King County Library fundraiser—Garth Nix and I were in conversation with each other. I really love his writing and it was so much fun learning more about how he thinks about storytelling.
I led here with the people, because in truth the writing and reading life isn’t lived only on the page. I love Laurie (and we share appreciation for a good Old Fashioned). I’ve known Lillian and Caitlin for years and through other stores, and I so appreciate people who make a life out of literature. The store itself is an absolute treat. It’s exquisitely edited and I find something I didn’t know I needed every time I go in. It’s also a place I love to shop for gifts, and not just books—the whole store is full of beautiful and joyful objects.
Miriam: We've been to Seabrook and yes they did recognize the sights, funny you mention that. I think that's half the fun of reading local authors who write about the Pacific Northwest! These are great memories, and for us it's all about the people too, so we love that. Tell me, I know we've offered special pre-orders of signed copies of your books over the years. Do you have any special memories of signing in the store?
Martha: Coming to Island Books is like a visit with old friends. Seeing Lillian and Caitlin at Island Books gathers all of those fond memories from other stores in one place—and it’s a testament to the deep knowledge that the stores booksellers have. They are in this work for life. I was a reader first, and truly I always will be. So to have my reader heart in such good hands means the world to me.
Miriam: Thanks, Martha. We're so grateful for to have you and your books in our lives too.
To our Island Books community: In the next 50 Years of Island Books installment, I’ll be talking to author Elise Hooper about how she crashed a staff party the first time she visited our store, and why her underdog stories have a special appeal at Island Books.
—Miriam

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Desi Arnaz Jr., Carl Brashear, Dewey Bunnel (America), Carman, Paul Cézanne, Michael Crawford, Martha Davis, electric lighting (1883), Rod Evans (Deep Purple), Tippi Hedren, Janis Joplin, Ish Kabbible, Laurie London, Rachel Luttrell, Massenet’s 1884 opera MANON, Simone Missick, Robert Palmer, Dolly Parton, Edgar Allen Poe, conductor Simon Rattle, Owsley Stanley, Jean Stapleton, Verdi’s 1853 opera IL TROVATORE, Caron Wheeler (Soul II Soul), John Wozniak (Marcy Playground), and Phil Everly, half of one of popular music’s greatest duos, The Everly Brothers. Their influence didn’t stop with Americana, country, folk, rock’n’roll, and rockabilly. Their sound reached across the pond to England, where The Beatles mimic’d the Everly’s tight harmonies and jangly guitars, and it is said The Beach Boys, The Bee Gees, and Simon & Garfukel owe a debt to the Everlys. Their long career produced mulitple hits, from oft-covered originals (“When Will I Be Loved”) to classics penned by Felice and Boudleux Bryant.
I was born the day The Everly’s were in the studio to record “Wake Up Little Susie”—the perfect portrait of young America. One of my first childhood memories (age 2) is seeing them on TV. I’m also a fan of their late 60s “gothic country” recordings as well as their solid 80s comeback albums. In the 90s Phil launched a guitar accessories company. At the time I was the buyer for a music store and decided to try Everly Strings. Weeks later I was at the NAMM Show, visiting the Everly Music booth, and Phil stopped by. I was very excited, telling him about songs I wrote that were influenced by him and his brother. He listened graciously, smiling like a Kentucky gentleman. He gave me a t-shirt, thanked me for supporting his company, and said to keep in touch.
Fast forward to 2003—The Everlys were on a major reunion tour, and I had tickets. The set was amazing—a fan’s dream. I had with me a photo of me wearing an Everly Strings t-shirt with Davy Jones (Monkees). Backstage I briefly met Don, did a group photo (which I since lost), and gave Phil a copy of the photo I brought. Phil laughed and said, “Cool. I’m going to hang this in my office.”
Here’s a rare non-lyric collaboration Phil did with Roy Wood—an homage to The Beach Boys. HB Phil and thank you for your light.

I was tagged by @bumblebee-and-tea to list five shows that make me feel better.
Disclaimer: shows that make me feel better are not necessarily (although they might be) the shows i’d rank the highest in... idk... cinematographic, plotty and other ways one might rank shows in. Let’s see then, in no particular order...
Pushing daisies (2007) - its so colorful and sweet and there’s a narrator with a cool voice and dead people coming back to life and then going back to death in hilarious ways, and there’s even a dog AND BEES and Lee Pace and adorable tiny Anna Friel how can you feel bad. I will even let the mermaids slide, because they are fake mermaids.
Catch-22 (2019) - i absolutely love the book, and the series is so good, also very colorful, it has a very specific color palette going that I love, and there’s 1940′s music, including italian tunes and Hugh Laurie was there and Christopher Abbott (who are you even) has a fine behind. I feel great just thinking about it.
The Office (US) (2005) - I could probably rewatch any episode (or at least one of the pre-S9) and feel immediately better. It was a series that fit my taste in jokes, goofiness, music and weird people.
Yonderland (2013) - I haven’t actually finished watching it yet, cause when something’s this precious i don’t like bingeing it (or else it ends too fast and then WHAT) but every episode has me laughing. I love those characters and every stupid line they say. I love those puppets. I love this. It lifts me up.
Archer (2009) - I started watching it again these days and I can’t remember why I never got caught up with it, i’m still at S5. It would be best to watch it with someone I think, because half the jokes make me want to poke a friend or another and say something, you know the feeling? But those characters are all TERRIBLE and i dig that. Fuck being decent let’s be outlaw country.
Honorable mentions: BBC Ghosts (fuck it got me hooked on Yonderland, but sorry ghosts you lost your spot, life is unfair as most of your characters know well) and Merlin (it’s been a decade? omg. I still love it, i should rewatch it. I will.) and even The Good Place (the first .. idk... 3 episodes almost made me stop watching but afterwards it was just an amazing experience and i am, to this day, laughing at Jeremy Bearimy) and i’ll say, Irmão do Jorel, a brazilian cartoon, is something I wish all of you could watch and, like, get, so we could all share in that particular experience.
If you’re willing to, I’ll tag @katbelleinthedark @black-lodge-gatekeeper @positivelypuzzled

what’s your first memory?
My memory is really fucked up because of my unique and drastically traumatic childhood.
I remember still being a baby or toddler and laying on this big green duvet in the forest with my mom and her two friends Laurie and Melanie when I was either 1 or 2.
I fell down the stairs when I was 2 and smashed my head open and I remember my mom singing me happy birthday on the drive to the hospital to calm me down.
I also remember my mom overdosing in front of me when I was four years old and her smashing her head over and over again into the wall lol.
I remember visiting my dad in North Carolina when he finished Berklee and him playing me songs on his bass.
I remember one time getting a bee stuck in my hair in day care when I was like three or four years old.
My grandma used to have tea parties in her gigantic garden when I was little and they were all different themes. I remember one year everyone dressed up like faeries that was cute.
I remember when my dad was married to this Japanese woman he met in Boston at college. She was so cool. She used to give me all these super awesome Japanese gifts and she got me obsessed with Hello Kitty.

Above and below: From the 1946 Warner Brother’s Merrie Melodies cartoon parody “Bacall to Arms,”  an animated “short” spoofing one of its own 1944 releases, the Howard Hawks classic noir “To Have and Have Not,” within which Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart burn up the screen. Here, the Bacall cartoon counter-part (“Laurie Bee Cool“) struts across the room toward Bogart (”Bogey Gocart”)in a vamp tease.
Tumblr media
Among other things, this film marks then 19 year old Lauren Bacall’s sizzling debut. It was also the beginning of the love affair between Bacall and Bogart; trysts which led to their eventual marriage. Aside from the incredibly hot on-screen chemistry playing out between the two, you can see them actually falling in love during this movie. In the GIF above, their cartoon counterparts kiss passionately in an iconic scene taken directly from the movie.

ANSWER ALL OF THE QUESTIONS IN THE UNUSUAL ASK GAME, YOU COWARD.
First of all:
Tumblr media
Second, questions under the cut:
Spotify, SoundCloud, or Pandora? - Spotify! all the way. i hoarse my bf’s account so he can never listen but i don’t care it’s mine now it’s full of my music and my playlists and whenever i’m listening to it and it suddenly changes cause he tries to use it on his phone I call him, “are you using spotify?” “oh. i mean i can listen to something else?” “cool, thanks!” and i get my music back. :D
is your room messy or clean? - it’s somewhere in between. my actual ROOM (bed room, i assume) is pretty clean, except i never make the bed. but the house is .. a work in progress. it’s not dirty but it’s cluttered so my bf and I are having to work together to clear that and build shelves and stuff for more storage space.
what color are your eyes? - dark brown! (with little green flecks when I cry)
do you like your name? why? - Not really? i don’t hate it. My mom wanted to name me Savannah but they had her sign the certificate while she was still drugged from her c-section so it ended up as Crystal?? Idk. She named her dolls Crystal when she was a kid.
what is your relationship status? - dating for almost six years.
how many times a week do you shower? uhhh idk. I don’t shower every day (unless i get gross). AT LEAST four times… but I don’t wash my hair every time cause that’s bad for my hair. I SHOWER WHEN I AM DIRTY.
favorite tv show? does Haikyuu!! count? that’s probably a given. HM. Well, we don’t have cable so I don’t watch a lot of NEW shows? …. OH. Duh. Fuckin me I’m a dumbass. Bob’s Burgers. I literally have it on ALL THE TIME. I don’t like silence so it’s ALWAYS on in the background if i’m not listening to music. I’ve seen every episode a zillion times. I can usually pinpoint every scene and the major lines/jokes.
shoe size? most brands it’s 5 1/2
how tall are you? SHORTER THAN NISHINOYA BUT TALLER THAN YACHI. I’m like… 5ft-5’1 depending on how much my back hurts. (i used that earlier and someone said it was funny and i’m trash so i’ll repeat it here!)
sandals or sneakers? i wear Bobs LOL. (knock off toms) and i’ve got one pair of sneakers and sometimes I wear my ballet flats around even though my bf says they look dumb fuck u they’re comfy.
do you go to the gym? No. I used to, but where I live now it’d be like a 45 min drive. I don’t really LIKE gyms though? working out is boring to me. No matter how hard I try. I’d love to start dancing again for real.
describe your dream date - April 25th because it’s not too cold and not too hot. Okay but jk that’s a lie where I live it’s balls hot in april. Idk. I’d like to go hiking when it’s not very hot? Take my dog, let her run around. Take a picnic. Sit in a grassy field and talk about dumb shit cause we know each other’s dreams and hopes by now.
how much money do you have in your wallet at the moment? UHM. fuck like…. $27? i know there’s a twenty and a handful of ones. And a handful of change.
what color socks are you wearing? - NONE. MY FEET ARE COLD. FOREVER COLD.
how many pillows do you sleep with? - pft like 6.
do you have a job? what do you do? - No; I quit after being over worked, under appreciated, cheated out of my paychecks a few times, and no job still due to lingering health issues.
how many friends do you have? answered this already!
whats the worst thing you have ever done? - UHM. Idk i haven’t murdered anyone. I don’t like this question cause if i really try to answer it i’ll spiral into a frustrated, furious depression and self-hatred so… NOPE.
whats your favorite candle scent? i’ve got this candle i got from etsy that’s like… Scottish Highlands? It’s grassy and kinda MAGICY.
3 favorite boy names - i don’t really have favorite names?

94. "Thank you to the miracle that we are able to meet in a dirty and ugly world, even like this" My Song - Girl Dead Monster. This is from Angel Beats and these are rough English translations
95. I prefer winter over summer, but spring is my fave season
96. I love night time, always will
97. I will always pick dark chocolate over all other chocolates
98. September is my favorite month, not because it's my birth month, but it's the one month where everything feels right
99. I'm a Virgo
100. Last person I cried in front of was my homeboy Mason, albeit I was drunk as fuck and don't remember it but he does. Says I scared him
Goddamn that took forever, but I did get over being bored, so bless you Anon

Is Spring Here? Or Just Around the Corner?
Tumblr media
Merry meet! Today as you might know is Imbolc, also called Oimelc, an ancient Celtic festival celebrating the beginning of spring and the traditional date on which ewes and other farm animals gave birth. You may also be familiar with the festival’s modern equivalents such as Candlemas, Groundhog Day, and St. Brigid’s Day. Whether you mark it as the midpoint of winter or the beginning of spring it’s generally been regarded as the time when the cold begins to thaw and life renews itself.
We’ve gathered all of our relevant articles from the past month as well as a bunch of other interesting stuff from around the web. We hope you have a very pleasant spring!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Desi Arnaz Jr., Carl Brashear, Dewey Bunnel (America), Carman, Paul Cézanne, Michael Crawford, Martha Davis, electric lighting (1883), Rod Evans (Deep Purple), Tippi Hedren, Janis Joplin, Laurie London, Rachel Luttrell, Massenet’s 1884 opera MANON, Simone Missick, Robert Palmer, Dolly Parton, Edgar Allen Poe, conductor Simon Rattle, Owsley Stanley, Jean Stapleton, Verdi’s 1853 opera IL TROVATORE, Caron Wheeler (Soul II Soul), John Wozniak (Marcy Playground), and Phil Everly, half of one of popular music’s greatest duos, The Everly Brothers.
I was the buyer in a music store then and decided to try Everly Strings.
Fast forward to 2003—The Everlys were on a major reunion tour and I had tickets.
Here’s a rare non-lyric collboration Phil did with Roy Wood—an homage to The Beach Boys. HB Phil and thank you for your light.

Now here's an idea that Alan Moore would just hate: what if Watchmen was a jukebox musical? Moreover, what if it were scored exclusively with Lemon Demon songs? Well, here's the hypothetical track listing.
When He Died
Ensemble number, as everyone finds out about and subsequently reacts to the death of the Comedian.
When he died, they found a message etched into his spine that said
When he died, an endless age of untold nightmares would be nigh
And the blood would make the seas run red
Wrong
Sung by the Comedian in the flashback scene about the Crimebusters' first meeting
Delightful, we're here, we're crazy SOBs with voices
Revolving, not solving anything with broken choices
Instead of peaceful coexistence, many feelings must be hurt
An outside race would quickly know we're only worth our weight in dirt
Reaganonmics
Ozymandias making a speech on tv. This doesn't directly translate from any specific scene in the book I just think it'd be fun for him to have a villain song of sorts before he's revealed as villainous, and this would be as good a placement as any
Are you unhappy girl in this confusing world
Where everything you earn is getting left to burn?
What Will Happen Will Happen
Ensemble number amidst the regular citizens of New York as they fret over the possibility of looming nuclear war
Imagine a world without the unabombers and the Jeffrey Dahmers
Wouldn't we be calmer?
Well of course by "we"
I'm only speaking for me
But it's easy to assume that other people agree, you see
The Too Much Song
Dan pining after Laurie, and just feeling generally inadequate
You're too much (or am I not enough?)
You're too much (and I feel this way)
Much too much (the longer that I wait, the more you are)
Too much (much to my dismay)
Relativity
Dr. Manhattan sings this while sitting on Mars and being depressed and stuff
He was a German physics genius
In 1955 he left us
Did Einstein really die
Or did the whole world come to life without him?
A Mask of My Own Face
I mean, do I even need to say it? Rorschach sings this one. Duh.
I'd rob my own apartment and I wouldn't give a damn
I'd blame it on the person that nobody knows I am
I look into my eyeholes, what do I see?
Mr. Wolfgang
Sung during the flashback sequence of Rorschach becoming the fucked up guy he is. Alternates between Rorschach himself singing, and his prison therapist
Like a little kid in a video game
Mr. Wolfgang's going insane
Bam bam, he just shot his boss
Bam bam, he just shot his boss's boss
Geeks In Love
Duet between Dan and Laurie while they do their fire rescue mission thing (there are other Lemon Demon love songs that would probably be less tonally dissonant but I really like this song so it's the one I'm going with)
As far as I can tell, while other lovers go through hell, we'll know
We're too cool for damnation
We may not be cutting edge, but we won't take the mainstream pledge
For we don't need your admiration
Knife Fight
Sung by Rorschach and those gangster-type guys he kills in prison
Hey, my knife is super sharp and that's what counts!
I'm gonna make you bleed copious amounts
Yeah, well, I'll be sure to thank you right after I shank you
Telekinesis
Dr. Manhattan sings this while having his argument with Laurie on Mars
She thought that I was very insincere because
I rolled my eyes a bit too much
Am I really that out of touch?
Why should I care about this?
I'm not concerned with the things I miss
Angry People
The first part is sung by Laurie as she makes the realization about her parentage...
When a man and a woman hate each other very much
They make love angrily
Like birds of prey, and africanized bees
And with a little bit of luck they'll conceive
...And it reprises as an ensemble number sung by the regular people going about their lives
I mean, we're normal people
Too busy to talk
At the supermarket, buying bottles of water
The big one's coming, I hope you have a basement
I Know Your Name
Ozymandias doing his monologue. Ok ok this one is a silly choice but listen. It's about the:
And then it happened: another vision came to me
Another psychic idea from my dreams
I knew I had to burn down the supermarket
To achieve world peace
So I did
Knife Fight (reprise)
That's the fight sequence, babey!
Fine
Ensemble number, as things come to a head and then resolve
And, oh, I know that every bomb has a silver lining
And, oh, I know it won't be long until
Everything works out nice in the end, the sun will marry the moon
It'll be fine
Christmas Will Be Soon
The scene where Laurie reconciles with her mom. Only reason I'm using this song for this scene is because of the time it takes place in and I want iabc to have some representation here
Idols come and go
Melting like the snow when sunlight comes
What Will Happen Will Happen (reprise)
Short closing ensemble number; acknowledging the many bad things that have happened, yet tentatively hopeful
If I, at my own convenience, forget what they say
I find it easy to focus on living each day
If I could change it I would, to do what someone else should
But I believe that the problem is misunderstood

THAT’S HIGHLY OFFENSIVE: THE SAG AWARDS 2018
So much pink! So many sparkles! it was actually pretty hard for me to be offended by this year’s SAG awards, but don’t worry- there were plenty of people who wanted to make it easy on me... Let the skewering begin!
Danielle Brooks- I think if her hair had been left wild and naturally beautiful, this would have been my favorite look of the night. Her dress is amazing! She looks like a badass, villainous ruby slipper! Or the glam version of the villain in Never-ending Story part 2. I love alllllll of it.
Chrissy Metz- i know it’s not gonna be cool for me to say this, but… let’s kill her off This Is Us so she’s free to star in my new Lifetime Fiction Made for TV Movie, “Violet Beauregarde: After the Gum, Before the Juicing.”
Giuliana Rancid- First things first: She looks like the child of Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jay Gatsby and the blonde vulture from the cartoon “Jungle Book.” I’m gonna be honest- I’m having a hard time coming up with new or interesting ways to call her an ungodly shade of orange or the Queen of the Antz. Because while she will always remain those things, she’s constantly finding new ways to offend me and the rest of America by being the most obtuse yet anorexic hymenoptera on the red carpet.
Abbie Cornish- Modeling the newest addition to the Elle Fanning & American Girl collaboration with Frederick’s of Hollywood.
Allison Williams: Some college sophomore who became anorexic in preparation for her Chicago audition.
Sterling K. Brown’s wife (who they keep trying to pretend/cram down our throats is an actress): You’re at the Spelling Bee and your word is DOILY.
Alison Brie: While I’m not obsessed with it, I love how her dress coordinates with her show. It’s fun, it’s eighties, it’s GLOWing.
Niecey Nash- No one cares, except me, but you stole my costume from when I played the Charo originated role of Frog Momma in “The Swan Princess.”
Halle Berry: I kind of love everything about this. It’s pink and berry and sparkly and has black tulle, so LOVE. But i cannot and will not with that My Little Pony Tail. You’re better than that, Halle. Shave that shit off like you did after David Justice!
Laurie Metcalf: If Angelina Jolie had worn this, my head would have exploded. You’re borderline just as devastating bc i LOVE YOU. Well played, sir.
Mary j Blige is clearly on her way to a ballet themed MET Gala dressed in Kmart’s Black Swan collection…
Only Taryn Manning would put a white, ankle strapped, Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls heel with an elegant, black, Audrey Hepburn-esque dress. Because ALL HER CHARACTERS.
Reese Witherspoon looks like a beautiful emerald earring. But when did she get that gap in her teeth?? @jenniferhintonmarion
Saiorse Ronan- If not for the bolo tie wrapped around your waist, i’d say you are a delightful version of Audrey’s character in Funny Face guest starring in a Moondreamers Valentine’s Day special.
Tracee Ellis Ross- At first I thought this was pants. I wasn’t going to like it then and I’m sad to say I shan’t be liking it any more upon realizing it’s a dress. It does nothing for her body and those shoes resemble something Angela Sephton purchased from Gadzooks circa 2004. Maybe if you get your pay raise, you can afford more attractive clothing.
Kate Hudson- The first time i saw this mess, i said to my friend @loganyost “It’s like Samantha the Victorian American Girl doll raped a care bear.” And I stand by that. #whattheactalfuck
Lupita Nyongo- On TV, that dress is PERFECTION. In photos though, it kind of resembles a silver tooth that’s gathered some Oreo around the gum line…
i didn’t think anyone could be as boring as Alexis Bledel at the Golden Globes (or in any role she’s ever played)… Olivia Munn has proven me wrong. #snooze
Brie Larson matched her eyeshadow to her dress. I love all the colors, but I do not love all the things.
Greta Gerwig: i freaking love everything about this. The color (which is giving me major Nicole Kidman in Dior circa 1997 vibes), the shape, the way she looks in the shape, the makeup that works with it all… LOVE.
Why is Molly Sims at the SAG awards? And why is she dressed as a saloon stripper named Cerulean Sarsaparilla???
Nicole Kidman- This is what you look like with the flu?!?!?!?!? i die. This looks like a chic, ruby-encrusted trash bag with a SJP shoulder flower and i love all of it.
Allison Janney came dressed as a SAG statue tonight, manifesting a win. And it worked. And I couldn’t be happier. Her performance in “I, Tonya” made started my year off RIGHT.
Susan Sarandon’s dress is what i want to own in every single color and fabric and have it be the only thing i ever wear to awards shows. And the sunglasses? Does she think she’s actually Bette Davis? I’m fine with it.
Did all the females in the ‘This Is Us’ cast decide to dress in the same shade of blueberry for a reason? Did they think  this was the blue version of all black everyone pulled at the Golden Globes? That being said, I definitely think Mandy Moore takes the prize for Best Use of Cobalt, 2018.
Aside from the cheap looking hem on Margot Robbie’s dress, this may be my favorite look of the night. She looks like an Ice Capades Barbie at the black tie gala on the eve of her big skate and i love allll of it.
Dakota fanning ALSO looks like a Barbie, but the #myfirstbarbie version.
Marisa Tomei- Perfection, as always. The ultimate modern bombshell. Pink. Glitter. Yes.
Kristen Bell: Great job as the hostess of the evening. HOWEVER, on the red carpet, she just reminded me to pick up medication for my next UTI.
Holly Hunter: Why am I so obsessed with this? Is it because you are one of my favorite actresses of all time  AND you happen to play a fellow ECU alum in your last amazing film, The Big Sick? Is it because there are pockets? I guess we’ll never know.
Connie Britton: Although I cannot forgive your latest role as a 911 operator (even if it is in a Ryan Murphy show), I am obviously obsessed with your pink, sparkly dress! It doesn’t fit even remotely like a dream, but i repeat: PINK AND SPARKLY. If your hair was blonde, the dress actually fit and you had red star earrings with a holographic fairy godmother on the other end, you’d be Jem.
Mary Steenburgen’s dress? Great. The color, the fit, it’s all working. I cannot, however, condone that HAIR! It’s like the brunette Deborah Rush spontaneously cut bangs so she could replace Jeri Blank in the Flatpoint High production of Chicago.
Omg Laura Linney- You look like some sort of beautiful pink bird in a cage in Barbie’s dream house. C’est magnifique.
ALRIGHT Y’ALL... I’D WRITE MORE, BUT FRANKLY, I’VE BEEN DRINKING WINE ALL DAMN DAY AND IT’S TIME TO GO THE PINK SATIN TO BED. LOVE YOU AND THANKS SO MUCH FOR READING!

Meet Jesse Jo Stark, the Seductive Star of New Rock’n’Roll
Every week, we ask one artist a set of quick-fire questions that all start with ‘the first’, from their first shows and paycheques to the first time they fell in love and got drunk. Here, LA cool-girl turned rock femme fatale Jesse Jo Stark talks making it in music, loving hard and why self-belief is still a daily struggle.
Jesse Jo Stark was destined to be rock royalty and she’s got the tour bus to prove it. I meet her on an unseasonably – even by our new global warming standards – windy day in London, where she’s parked up outside around the back of Camden Roundhouse. She’s been supporting The Vaccines on their UK tour, captivating audiences across the country with her punk-chic meets LA-infused indie sound and style. As these glorified coaches go, this one’s got some serious, badass personality. Metallic pink tassels, leopard-print cushions, mirrors on the ceiling and a rhinestone megaphone (Stark says bedazzling it herself has helped soothe her through a breakup) all contribute to the crazy cowgirl theme. Little surprise, then, that she describes her vibe as “hillbilly horror”.
As the daughter of Richard and Laurie Lynn Stark, the founders of ultra-cool rocker brand Chrome Hearts, the 27-year-old singer-songwriter has been around musicians since her earliest years. Raised on a diet of David Bowie and Fleetwood Mac, Stark boasts Cher as her godmother, Duff McKagan of Guns N' Roses a family friend and her first EP, Down The Drain, was produced by Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones.
There’s no doubt that Stark is well-connected (Bella Hadid is her BFF), but it’s sheer talent that’s really taking her places. Stark is a seriously good songwriter and a captivating performer. She’s also bringing a much-needed female voice to the indie rock scene, like a Patti Smith or Viv Albertine for the Instagram generation (she has a very healthy 212,000 followers of her own). Here, the indie darling speaks to GQ about everything from to self-belief and stage fright to heartbreak and media misperceptions.
The first time you realised you wanted to be a musician...
"Straight from the womb, I came out singing. Honestly, I don’t think I knew what that meant, but, yeah. I wrote my first song when I was seven. It was about a boy who didn’t like me."
The first time you played in front of a live audience...
"I was, like, 17 or 18 and I’d done a million little things before, but my first real big show was when I did a collaboration with Vans. We threw a huge party at the Troubadour in LA. It was a full show and we set up the collaboration like a merch booth. That was horrifying. My band wasn’t my band now, I didn’t know how to move my body, it was so scary and there was a ton of people there."
The first time you got silly drunk...
"I remember stoned. Drunk? OK. It was Santa Margarita, bottle of wine, in my friend Lily’s car, by the beach. There was a bonfire. And I threw up a lot. I was about 13 or 14."
The first time you fell properly in love...
"Oh, my God, like, seriously, out of the womb. I have to tell you, this is really hard to talk about, but I loved this Chinese boy at my kindergarten. I have a really bad memory, but I’ll always remember we were on the swing set. I loved him. It was deep. It was passionate. I’m not kidding. My best friend, Sorcha – he liked her and he asked her to go on the swings and not me. I was traumatized. Heartbroken. I love hard."
The first record you ever bought...
"I bought a lot of CDs at one particular store in Malibu. It was probably Ricky Martin or the Spice Girls."
The first time you put together a stage outfit...
"The one that I remember is when my godmother [Cher] let me design my 'Shoop Shoop' costume – she let me perform in one of her shows. And I still have it, it’s tiny. It’s a brown vest with a ‘P’ sign, fringe and fur. Then the pants were denim with leather ‘P’ sign patches on them. I was really little, like seven. It was horrifyingly scary: I remember the whole front row staring at me."
The first time you made money out of being a musician...
"I’m not making that much money even now. I would say when I did my Vans collaboration, that really incorporated my music, that was the first thing that I did alone. I saved that money and put it towards house stuff."
The first time you won at anything...
"OK, you’re making me really go down memory lane. I just got an award last week during this British tour – it's not an actual award, but it’s like a plaque from a man who owns a venue I played at and he wrote my name and my lyrics on it. I seriously was so touched, because I never won anything, not sports or a spelling bee, nothing, so I felt like that was my moment. I want to send it to my volleyball teacher, like, ‘Look’. It says 'burning in the fire of love, alright'. He was really cute to me and I love him."
The first time you got stage fright...
"I still get it. It’s like a formula every time, I have to center. I love being around the guys - my band - I feel like the fact that they believe in me allows me to do what I’m doing. So I’m really lucky to have such a cool family. To prepare, I say a little prayer, take a really big breath and then just switch my mood. I like to be angry rather than happy when I go on stage."
The first time you threw a punch and meant it...
"I punched my ex-boyfriend – he let me, though. I punched him, like, ten times. It wasn’t a joke, but he let me."
The first time you realized your friendship circle was famous...
“I don’t think of me like that. I think Bella is famous. It’s interesting because I’ve known Bella for such a long time. She’s younger than me and we’re both from Malibu and we got close before she blew up… I’m so proud of her, she’s my number one babe. I pick her over all the babes. The only thing that’s weird is the awkward pictures of me bending over and fixing her bikini. She looks amazing. I look awful.”
The first time you read a piece of fake news about yourself...
"That I’m a drug addict, a party animal who is always out. I’m really not. I love being at home and I love my family. I mean, everybody has their moments when they go out, but I don’t think that’s cool in any way."
The first thing you'd do if you became president...
"I’d say funding. There are so many major things going on right now that are important, and I don’t know what the first thing to tackle would be because it’s so tragic seeing the suffering that’s going on, the mess we’ve made. I think they all go hand in hand. I can just say that I do think it’s time for someone to sort the crap out and it’s not going to be the president right now."
The first person you'd call if you were in real trouble...
"At the moment, I’d say my guitar player Thomas. We’re sharing the same space emotionally right now. He helps me anywhere, from styling me to making me coffee to saving me from a burning building."
