“For they are all my children, all that I swore to defend -- It is my duty to become both queen and trusted friend.”

Cardverse content! Cardverse content ahoy! ❤️
I’ve actually had this sketch unfinished in my sketchbook for a while, but I finally got around to fully editing it...this is Carewyn at her coronation, when she first became Queen of Hearts! Yeah, she does look a little less than excited about it. But hey, when you become Queen not because you want to (on the contrary), but because it might be the only leverage you have to stop the woman who’s tyrannically taken over your country of birth as a despot queen and to somehow protect your brother and mother from that same woman...yeah, that crown is going to feel really bloody heavy. Especially when there are so many people suddenly counting on you to succeed: not just your new partner, the current King Declan, but also the previous Queen Rosalie and the countless citizens you now represent. 😞
As you can see, though, even on this grand day where she’s dressed to the nines, Carewyn still holds onto a bit of modesty, with her hair in a modest braid and wearing her regular green Club earrings that Orion gifted her so many years ago. And despite the slightly melancholy stoicism of her posture, she held her head up high and spoke with the conviction of a general, when she addressed her new people as Queen.
“Not long ago, I journeyed here, with naught but dreams of advancing my education. Yet in my short time here, you have welcomed me, and for that, I shall always be grateful. It is for this gratitude -- and for the love I have grown for this land that’s embraced me -- that I shall fight to protect, provide, and advocate for you, as your Queen...for however long that you have both a want and need of me. Although this crown...is not one I ever would have chosen, for myself...I’m truly honored by our fair Queen Rosalie’s faith in me, as well as King Declan’s, and all of yours. Your faith in me is a gift so priceless, I don’t think I could ever be worthy of it...but I will try my best to honor that faith, all the same. From the bottom of my heart...thank you...and long may our Kingdom prosper, long beyond this Frabjous Day.”
Carewyn didn’t socialize that much at the coronation ball afterwards. Both she and Declan were much more attuned to speaking about important matters of state with their court and foreign representatives than small talk, so they almost simultaneously decided to withdraw and enjoy their guests’ levity from the sidelines.
“Will they really not mind if we just sit back?” Carewyn asked. Even with how much she dearly wanted to do just that, she didn’t want to offend anyone.
“Not at all,” Declan reassured her. He then offered her a slightly more mischievous smile. “Just remember to keep your head up, sit up straight and tall...and smile and nod slowly whenever you make eye contact with someone. Makes you look more regal.”
Carewyn bit her lip to hold in a laugh, before accepting the arm Declan offered her and following the older man back to the thrones at the back of the hall. The two royals then proceeded to chat more casually for the rest of the night, sometimes about politics, sometimes about the party and its guests, but occasionally also slipping in the odd reference to the works of Charles Dodgson, now and again. (Declan was very well-read, and he was actually rather happy to have someone else around who enjoyed talking about literature.)
The best thing about the coronation, however, was what came two days later, when Orion was finally able to come up from the Land of Clubs himself. Carewyn had been surprised and delighted enough to see her old friend again so soon...but when she saw that he’d not only brought her a white Abraxan of her own as a belated coronation gift (which honestly had been overwhelming enough!), but also a blond-haired traveling companion who at the sight of Carewyn was so full of pride she couldn’t hold in her tears.
Carewyn herself was crying just as hard herself when she ran forward, right past Declan, Orion, and her dear new Abraxan horse. She paid them or any reactions from possible witnesses no mind -- chucking out all of her usual stoicism and composure completely, she dashed across the courtyard to Orion’s open carriage and threw her arms around the older blond woman standing in front of it, latching onto her as if she never wanted to let go again.
“MUM! Mum -- Mum...!”
Carewyn’s voice was as choked and adoring as a child’s -- as if her whole heart had burst, and the emotion locked inside behind that dam for so long had flooded every inch of her being. Lane’s voice was a mere shadow of her daughter’s, hushed in the back of her throat and unsubstantial, and yet overcome and aching with relief, love, and pride.
“Winnie -- oh, my Winnie...my baby...my baby...”
The two held each other for close to ten whole minutes, stroking each other’s backs and hair, rocking each other back and forth, shaking, and crying all the while. After three years of painful separation, doubting whether they’d ever see each other again...here they were -- together and free.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman: It all began with a man killing himself after driving a stolen car into a ditch. That’s what the narrator of this story remembers, having returned to his quiet hometown in Sussex to attend a funeral. And with that man’s death, something dark was unleashed. Something that drew the narrator’s neighbors - Lettie Hempstock and her enigmatic mother and grandmother - to him, swearing to protect him from the evil that was about to descend upon him. Even though the narrator hasn’t thought about the Hempstocks in years, he begins to remember, with perfect clarity, the terrible things that followed, that no child should ever have had to endure.
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll: Alice, bored and sleepy and longing for something interesting to happen, seems to get her wish when she spies a white rabbit in a waistcoat scurry by, looking at a giant pocket-watch and fretting about being late. What follows is the classic story of a young girl wandering through the colorful and ridiculous world of charming and utterly mad inhabitants, an enduring testament to the power of youthful imagination.
Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center by bell hooks: The field of feminism can be thorny, and often muddled by short-shortsightedness and prejudices from all sides. In this book, hooks challenges some long-held beliefs that marginalize women of color and working class women, often left out of feminist activism because of these prejudices. (Also I should definitely have read Ain’t I A Woman first, because this builds on a lot of points expressed there first, I just didn’t think about it, oops)
Banned Book Club by Kim Hyun Sook: Kim is convinced that her world will truly open up once she starts college. After acing her exams and convincing her traditional mother that college is a good idea, she’s ready to find solace from the constant political upheaval common in South Korea’s Fifth Regime and the protests against it. When she’s invited to join an extracurricular book club, Kim’s excitement over potential discussions of The Scarlet Letter and Hamlet quickly dissolve when she learns that the club is devoted to reading and distributing censored or banned Western books and media. And as the regime tightens its grip and begins to close in on Kim’s book club, she and her newfound friends must fight to protect their right to free information.
Mrs. Caliban by Rachel Ingalls: Dorothy lives a quiet, lonely life in the suburbs. Her husband is spending more and more time at work. Her one friend is caught up in the turmoil of her own life. She thinks she can handle it, that it’s nothing she can’t endure, until she hears about a dangerous monster breaking out of a local research institute...and turns around to find that exact monster standing in her kitchen. But she soon learns, like much in her life, there’s more to this mysterious monster than anyone ever realized.

I Had a Bloody Good Time at House Harker (2016)
My rating: 7/10
I mean, some of the jokes really did not land, but a lot of them did, and you could tell that everybody was very passionate about this project. Overall it was, indeed, pretty bloody good.

Ken Miles and Carroll Shelby

Pre-grid of the 1966 Le Mans 24-Hour race displays no fewer than eight  GT40 Mk II’s primed and prepared to defeat the then-dominant Ferraris, which had won the event nine previous times. Ken Miles’ #1 Ford Shelby GT40 (light blue) is in the foreground.

Ford CEO Henry Ford II and his wife stroll the Le Mans paddock lane before the official start of the 1966 24-Hours of Le Mans. History in the making minute-by-minute, with the seeds of controversy quietly brewing.

Ken Miles shown here leading the 1966 24-Hours of Le Mans in late race wet conditions. He did so definitively in varied conditions, overcoming repeated setbacks. Scorers and mechanics in his paddock report that he was one full lap ahead by the final hour of the race.

Bruce McLaren, shown here trailing Ken Miles on a rainy track in the ’66 Le Mans 24-hour race, is sadly no longer alive to describe his view of how events unfolded.

An historic moment captured. Three Ford GT40 Mk Il’s are orchestrated by Ford to cross the finish line in unison, with Bruce McLaren slightly ahead, notwithstanding that in the final hours of the race the car of Ken Miles/Denny Hulme was leading dominantly — yet obediently slowed in order to achieve the Ford competition director’s order that the three cars cross the finish-line together. With McLaren marginally in the lead, he was awarded the win that rages with controversy to this day.

#PBSwednesday A 1982 Broadway stage performance of Alice in Wonderland was telecast on PBS’s Great Performances in 1983. It starred Kate Burton as Alice, and her father, Richard Burton, as the White Knight. Other notable roles included Nathan Lane as the Dormouse, Geoffrey Holder as the Cheshire Cat, and Eve Arden as the Queen of Hearts. Colleen Dewhurst was also a fierce Red Queen, and Maureen Stapleton was the scatterbrained White Queen.
The production was a revival of actress-director Eva Le Gallienne and Florida Friebus’s famous 1932 stage adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s novel. Black-and-white papier-mâché costumes aimed to re-create the book’s original artwork by John Tenniel. (Wikipedia)

All other planetary bodies in the Solar System also appear to periodically switch direction as they cross Earth's sky. Though all stars and planets appear to move from east to west on a nightly basis in response to the rotation of Earth, the outer planets generally drift slowly eastward relative to the stars. Asteroids and Kuiper Belt objects (including Pluto) exhibit apparent retrogradation. This motion is normal for the planets, and so is considered direct motion. However, since Earth completes its orbit in a shorter period of time than the planets outside its orbit, it periodically overtakes them, like a faster car on a multi-lane highway. When this occurs, the planet being passed will first appear to stop its eastward drift, and then drift back toward the west. Then, as Earth swings past the planet in its orbit, it appears to resume its normal motion west to east. Inner planets Venus and Mercury appear to move in retrograde in a similar mechanism, but as they can never be in opposition to the Sun as seen from Earth, their retrograde cycles are tied to their inferior conjunctions with the Sun. They are unobservable in the Sun's glare and in their "new" phase, with mostly their dark sides toward Earth; they occur in the transition from evening star to morning star.
The more distant planets retrograde more frequently, as they do not move as much in their orbits while Earth completes an orbit itself. The retrogradation of a hypothetical extremely distant (and nearly non-moving) planet would take place during a half-year, with the planet's apparent yearly motion being reduced to a parallax ellipse.

Saddened to learn of the passing of Actress Phyllis Coates (1927-2023)
Phyllis Coates, the first Lois Lane television ever saw, has died.
She was 96.
The actress died on Oct. 11 of natural causes at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills
The actress first appeared in the first full-length feature film to star the DC hero, 1951's dark Sci-fi movie Superman and the Mole Men, the success of which soon led to a syndicated television series, Adventures of Superman. Coates portrayed the journalist for 26 episodes before departing the series at the conclusion of the first season.
She was replaced by Noel Neill, who had played the character in previous Superman Columbia serials, and the show lasted another five seasons.
Born January 15,1927 in Wichita Falls, Texas, Phyllis Coates moved to Hollywood as a teenager with intentions of enrolling at UCLA. A chance encounter with Ken Murray in a Hollywood & Vine restaurant landed her in the comedian's vaudeville show. She started out as a chorus girl and worked her way up to doing skits before moving on to work for veteran showman Earl Carroll and later touring with the USO. Coates got some of her first motion picture experience in comedy short subjects at Warner Brothers and then graduated to roles in early '50s films. After a one-season stint with the Man of Steel (George Reeves on Adventures of Superman (1952)), she began to divide her time among TV, B-movie assignments and serials at Republic.
Throughout her career, she'd be seen in series like The Lone Ranger, Gunsmoke, and Leave It to Beaver, and in 1994 appeared as Lois Lane’s mother in an episode of ABC’s Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. She also appeared in several classic films, like I Was a Teenage Frankenstein and Girls in Prison, The Incredible Petrified World and Panther Girl of the Kongo. She also appeared in the film Invasion U.S.A. (1952) with future Lois Lane Actress Noel Neill.
My Condolences to Family and Friends.
#R.I.P. 😔🙏🥀
