Hypnotic Photos, Gigantic Lens: Canon RF 800mm F5.6 L Review
C'mon, admit it, you know you want to see what images from $20k worth of camera and lens can create.
Extreme telephotos aren’t easy to find. A reach like 800mm was just a dream when full frame mirrorless cameras first started trickling out. But the new Canon RF 800mm f5.6 L IS USM changes that, bringing a big reach to the eye-AF-equipped bodies like the EOS R3. If the reach doesn’t impress, the stabilization will. With 4.5 stops of stabilization, it’s possible to actually make photographs with…

Hiii Miss Ravennn! 😊 I’m sure you’ve seen the new club Leona by now and if not now then at some point you will. 🎤 Care to share with the class about what your thoughts on it are?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Insert groaning sfx here-
IF I MUST... 💀
***Spoilers for Epel, Ruggie, and Leona's Club Wear cards below the cut!!***
Tumblr media
*aggressively leans into the mic* ALRIGHT, WHICH ONE OF YOU TWST DEVS DECIDED TO PUT THE GUY WITH THE BIGGEST CHEST NEXT TO TWO OF THE FLATTEST GUYS IN THE WHOLE CAST 🤡 That poor belt looks like it's going to burst, it truly is the strongest soldier of Magift/Spelldrive Club... I'm going to have to avoid scrolling on socials for like the next week or else I just know I'm going to be clocked by fan art after fan art of Leona in uniform 🪦
BUT HEY, IT'S OKAY, IT'S FINE, IT'S FIIIIINE. Let's compare the club outfits of Leona against his teammates to distract me from thinking about rolling for L*ona!
Tumblr media
Many fans already predicted Leona's new hairstyle would be something that kept his hair out of his face, similar to what we see for Epel and Ruggie. This makes sense, as you would not want anything obscuring your line of sight if you're going to be playing a sport. I like that they differentiated Leona's ponytail from the one he wears in his PE Uniform card! In his new Clubwear, Leona's bangs are slicked back to not get in his way, and the ponytail is much higher. The PE Uniform ponytail still has his usual bangs and the ponytail is very low.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Around Leona, Epel, and Ruggie's necks appears to be some kind of... cord???? (I'm not familiar with sporting gear, so I don't know what the terminology for this piece is. Sorry!!) There is a different number of golden notches, and I wonder if this corresponds with their year level since Epel (the first year) has one, Ruggie (the second year) has two, and Leona (the third year and club captain) has three.
Leona’s jacket also appears to be slightly longer than Ruggie and Epel’s, though it’s hard to tell for sure because of his pose. Is that to indicate he’s the leader??? (If it’s signaling seniority, then Ruggie’s jacket would be longer than Epel’s). Edit: Leona’s longer jacket is confirmed in his voice lines to be someone only the club leader wears.
RE SO EXTRA?????? 'An interesting detail is that Ruggie and Epel have goggles with different colored coatings on their lenses to reflect their dorms (golden for Savanaclaw, purple for Pomefiore). Leona, however, does not have traditional goggles, nor are they mounted on his head. He seems to have a pair of sunglasses dangling from the little side pocket that holds his magical pen. Ruggie and Epel's footwear also indicates their dorm allegiance via colors. Leona's shoes are that signature Savanaclaw yellow as well, but... ahbdbyovqyfefe THEY'RE'An interesting detail is that Ruggie and Epel have goggles with different colored coatings on their lenses to reflect their dorms (golden for Savanaclaw, purple for Pomefiore). At first I thought it was a bunch of shiny golden particles but upon closer inspection, it looks to be more like a purposefully textured fade. Truly, hats off to the designers and artists for somehow making a variant of the club uniform that conveys Leona’s arrogance and includes luxurious fashion (though let’s be honest, Ruggie probably maxed Leona’s credit card buying these accessories for him www).

A n y w a y
I think my favorite part of this new card is Leona’s face. You can unfortunately get a good look at how handsome he is here 💀 The cocky smirk, the sharp and bright eyes, his sharp jawline, how his locks fall around his face and call attention to… YOU KNOW, EVERYTHING???? 😭 His regal aura really is there front and center…
Tumblr media
But no, no!! I shan’t roll for him 🙃 I can appreciate from afar, I don’t need to have ojitan in my card roster, nope.
Since the Epel Clubwear first dropped and I saw the buckles… I’ve been on a spiritual retreat in the mountains and lived a humble life as a nun, meditating in the peace and tranquility of nature to attain enlightenment. I have no worldly desires such as Fake Cat 🙏 This is me coping

Adulting is Hard: Black Friday Ed.
So all I really wanted was a new ‘Zelda’ - 3 Legged Things dedicated L bracket for my Nikon Z5.
So naturally I proceeded to add it, as well as a wish list of Nikon Z mount lenses to my cart. Upon checkout I casually noticed the total amount was north of $4500. So I slowly started to remove items from said cart.
I’m not a professional photographer, so I don’t need all that gear. Especially gear at the S-Line level of quality. It was then that I rationalized just one inexpensive lens. I chose a prime 40mm f/2. Between that and my new L Bracket, I got out of there for just under $400.
This looks a more my speed.

My fuckaround project for today was getting much younger Sage's former-favorite lens, a Canon EFS 60mm macro, to fit on my current camera body. This lens was dropped in the swamp many many years ago, I sent it to Canon desperate for repairs, but they returned it; unsalvageable. I was heartbroken.
The lens, through and through, is covered in mold/mildew/haze/toxic arsenal swamp water residue. I was interested to see if it would take grungy, gross, icky photos, as I do enjoy.. grungy gross icky photos after all. To make it fit, I had to remove the baffle, and add some spacers under the mount so it would clear the mirror. This of course means there are major light leaks and wild blowouts, which... I don't terribly mind, honestly. Adds character, for a lens like this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, after some test shots, there is... no grime? Just a gorgeous haze. Could I achieve that with my L series lenses by slapping a filter over them? Sure. But that's not the point, that defeats the purpose. Plus I'm genuinely surprised the lens is still able to take such sharp closeups as well. Perhaps death is not the end for this lens.
I'll post some shots with it over the next couple days.

@omnilimit : 68. For Verona-- they're riding on the Hardy Daytona or sth. :)
𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐃.
Tumblr media
The initial reaction likely is not what he was banking on ; Verona herself was not sure what to say , baffled to silence at the fact that t h i s is what he wanted to show her and t h i s is what he wanted to drag her down here for ( it’ll be fun , she remembers one of her wards professing as they push her towards the door ; give him a chance , he’ll surprise you ! ) .  Yes , she is certainly … SURPRISED .  Impressed , even , that he has the audacity to make such a request of her when he is more than aware of how busy she is ( but then , he knows what he asks— he knows she’ll come when he calls— ) .  Lips are pressed into a thin line , half-blind gaze p e e r i n g over the shining rim of her sunglasses hanging low on the bridge of her nose.  Head is canted as she looks ‘tween him , the bike , and back again.  A claw lifts , sliding her lenses back into place.  “You’re asking me to ride along on t h a t ?”  Shockingly , there’s nothing to suggest she’s about to refuse , not even an ounce of disdain.
A frosted sigh of dramatic resignation leaves her , “Fine - yes - okay , I’ll go.  Just s t o p staring at me like that.”  She HATES it when he’s so s m u g about it.  Letting him mount into place first , Verona hesitates ( there isn’t much room is there ? ) ‘fore settling into place behind him.  It’s certainly a TIGHT FIT ; two pieces coming flush together – learning to align.  Even when the bike speeds off into gear , Verona’s attention remains affixed on the proximity ( monster first , woman second ) ; his warmth , his scent , it blurs in her head , and it teases her senses— “Be careful,” the words whisper out of her ‘fore she can stop them , it’s more a guide to herself than him , but that doesn’t stop him from assuring her they’ll be JUST FINE .
Somehow , the world seems better smeared and out of focus like this.  For once , the Chimera might even consider the journey p e a c e f u l if it wasn’t stuck on the back of a hurtling ungodly metal contraption.  Still , she can relent her inhibitions for awhile , can’t she ?  Her chin comes to rest atop his shoulder , her arms loosely coiling at his waist.
She feels his form shift , sees his hand retreat from the handlebar to reach ‘round slightly , settling there on her leg cocked at his hip.  She smiles at the gesture , but the Chimera can’t discern what it is he’s trying to gain.  Ringed claws apply pressure where they rest ‘gainst him , her voice teasing his ear ( a low purr , meant to instigate ) , “Be CAREFUL .”  A warning now ; he should KNOW BETTER than to drive distracted.  Just to prove a point , those sharp ivories prick at sensitive skin under his ear ( it’s a clear test ; how much can you tolerate ? ) .

SPRING THAW.
The province of Ontario (Canada) is experiencing its annual spring thaw. River water levels tend to be high as snow melts. GRAND RIVER, located in southwest Ontario is no exception. Its waters flow through traditional territories of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe and Neutral peoples en-route to emptying into the north shore of Lake Erie.
THE PHOTOGRAPH.
I took a few minutes to watch and listen to the current. Being prepared allowed for just the right amount of time to capture a few frames. GRAND RIVER was shot in Apple's ProRes RAW format using multiple exposures, with a couple of filters mounted on an iPhone 15 Pro Max.
IPHONOGRAPHY.
If you've been following me you know it's taken a few years for me to become truly comfortable with using a mobile phone to create high quality images suitable for printing. I felt, for the most part, the resulting images weren't detailed enough. I've been using tried-and-true full-size camera gear ever since I first brought a camera's viewfinder to my eye.
After I was done, I slipped the iPhone back into a pocket, and made my way back to dry land. It was a lot easier to do without carrying a full-frame Canon with battery grip and L-Series lenses.
Anyway, learning and adapting is part of the enjoyment. I'm excited to add mobile camera-phone gear to my arsenal of photography tools.

The metalens meets the stars
Large, all-glass metalens images sun, moon and nebulae.
Metalenses have been used to image microscopic features of tissue and resolve details smaller than a wavelength of light. Now they are going bigger.
Researchers at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have developed a 10-centimeter-diameter glass metalens that can image the sun, the moon and distant nebulae with high resolution. It is the first all-glass, large-scale metalens in the visible wavelength that can be mass produced using conventional CMOS fabrication technology.
The research is published in ACS Nano.
“The ability to accurately control the size of tens of billions of nanopillars over an unprecedentedly large flat lens using state-of-the-art semiconductor foundry processes is a nanofabrication feat that opens exciting new opportunities for space science and technology,” said Federico Capasso, the Robert L. Wallace Professor of Applied Physics and Vinton Hayes Senior Research Fellow in Electrical Engineering at SEAS and senior author of the paper.
Most flat metalenses, which use millions of pillar-like nanostructures to focus light, are about the size of a piece of glitter. In 2019, Capasso and his team developed a centimeter-scale metalens using a technique called deep-ultraviolet (DUV) projection lithography, which projects and forms a nanostructure pattern that can be directly etched into the glass wafer, eliminating the time-consuming writing and deposition processes that were required for previous metalenses.
DUV projection lithography is commonly used to pattern fine lines and shapes in silicon chips for smartphones and computers. Joon-Suh Park, a former graduate student at SEAS and current postdoctoral fellow in Capasso's team, demonstrated that the technique could not only be used to mass produce metalenses but also increase their size for applications in virtual and augmented reality.
But making the metalens even larger for applications in astronomy and free-space optical communications posed an engineering problem.
“There is a major limitation with the lithography tool because these tools are used to make computer chips, so chip size is restricted to no more than 20 to 30 millimeters,” said Park, co-first author of the paper. “In order to make a 100-millimeter diameter lens, we needed to find a way around this limitation.”
Park and the team developed a technique to stitch together several patterns of nanopillars using the DUV projection lithography tool. By dividing the lens into 25 sections but using only the 7 sections of a quadrant considering the rotational symmetry, the researchers showed that DUV projection lithography could pattern 18.7 billion designed nanostructures onto a 10-centimeter circular area in a matter of minutes. The team also developed a vertical glass etching technique that allows the creation of high-aspect ratio, smooth-sidewall nanopillars etched into glass.
“Using the same DUV projection lithography, one could produce large-diameter, aberration-correcting meta-optics or even larger lenses on larger glass diameter wafers as the corresponding CMOS foundry tools become increasingly available in the industry,” said Soon Wei Daniel Lim, a postdoctoral fellow at SEAS and co-first author of the paper.
Lim played a lead role in the full simulation and characterization of all the possible fabrication errors that could arise during mass-manufacturing processes and how they could impact the optical performance of metalenses.
After addressing possible manufacturing challenges, the researchers demonstrated the power of the metalens in imaging celestial objects.
Mounting the metalens on a tripod with a color filter and camera sensor, Park and the team took to the roof of Harvard’s Science Center. There, they imaged the Sun, the moon and the North America nebula, a dim nebula in the constellation Cygnus about 2,590 light years away.
“We were able to get very detailed images of the Sun, the moon and the nebula that are comparable to images taken by conventional lenses” said Arman Amirzhan, a graduate student in the Capasso Lab and co-author of the paper.
Using only the metalens, the researchers were able to image the same cluster of sunspots as a NASA image taken that same day.
The team also demonstrated that the lens could survive exposure to extreme heat, extreme cold and the intense vibrations that would occur during a space launch without any damage or loss in optical performance.
Because of its size and monolithic glass composition, the lens could also be used for long-range telecommunications and directed energy transport applications.
The research is co-authored by Hyukmo Kang, Karlene Karrfalt, Daewook Kim, Joel Leger, Augustine Urbas, Marcus Ossiander and Zhaoyi Li. It was supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Grant No. HR00111810001 and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research under Award No. FA9550-22-1-0312.

Laowa 90mm F2.8 2x Ultra Macro Review: This Is Beautiful
Grab a spoon, this lens makes bokeh soup.
While many 1:2 lenses are labeled macro, photography purists consider only lenses with life-size reproduction capability worthy of the macro title. The Laowa 90mm f2.8 2x Ultra Macro is one of the few lenses to double that, getting in twice as close as the standard macro lens. That’s enough to capture details you can’t see with the naked eye, like pollen clinging to a bug’s feet. (more…)
