Akihiko's polite speech during the confession scene is such a sweet detail in Japanese, especially given how Akihiko and Haruki normally speak with one another.

Asian languages tend to have polite versions of speech that sadly can get lost in translation when translated to English. Japanese is even one of those language systems that officially have so-called "polite speech" as opposed to "casual speech".

In this scene, Akihiko uses words and phrases like "ii desu ka" and "kudasai". "Ii" means "good" and is a neutral word. The "desu ka" part is formal/polite. "Desu" is something like the English "is" and can be used in casual speech, but "ka" is a polite speech question marker—that is, it tells you that the person is asking a question regardless of their tone (if the person is speaking) or punctuation ("ka" is usually punctuated with a period). The casual version of this question would have been, "Sawatte (touch) mo ii?" without the "desu ka" part, basically meaning, "Is it good/okay to touch [you]?"

Likewise, "Ore to (with me) tsukiatte (go out/date) kudasai (please)" is politely asking someone to go out with you. Technically, you can ask someone to do something in casual speech by dropping "kudasai" and just using the imperative version of a word ("tsukiau" is the verb meaning "to go out with", and "tsukiatte" is the form it takes if you're telling/asking someone to do that action) would be the casual version.

All of this is very different to how Akihiko and Haruki usually talk with one another. For example:

Here, Akihiko is saying, "Warui (my bad) ... kyou (today) omae'nchi de ii (is it okay if I go to your house)?" Note that it's in casual speech. In fact, Akihiko has a lazy way of talking so he tends to slur words together like "omae no (your) uchi (home)". He does this a lot with Haruki.

And here, Haruki is asking, "Akihiko, ocha (tea) o katte (bought) kureta (did do [for me])?" The question is also in casual speech.

And then their text exchange, Akihiko asks, "Mada okiteru (still awake)?" and Haruki responds with "Okiteru (still awake) yo", with "yo" even being like a casual/light/friendly ending to his statement. Politely, this would have been, "Mada okite imasu (awake still /polite form) ka," and "Hai (yes), okite imasu (still awake /polite form)."

Akihiko's later, "Tometekun'ne?" is once again like a shortened version of "tometekunai (won't allow to stay over) ne?" like, "Won't you let me stay over?"

Basically, Akihiko speaks very casually with Haruki. He doesn't even use honorifics with Haruki even when Haruki is older and a senior in the same university. (Likely he might have used one before? But at some point dropped it when he and Haruki became friends/bandmates.)

But during the confession scene, Akihiko had been working hard to be someone Haruki would approve of. He wasn't just asking out a friend; he was asking out somebody he admired, whom he hurt and who had every right to refuse him. He was on his knees, humbling himself in front of Haruki, and he was shaking with nerves.

In fact, Akihiko legit had an entire speech going, but Haruki spoke as usual—he probably found Akihiko and his tone to be too intense lol—and reverted their exchange back to something less formal.

Here's their full scene:

Haruki goes, "Ii yo" and it's his usual way of speaking with Akihiko (see: text messages exchange). Akihiko, surprised presumably by how easily Haruki agreed after everything that happened between them, dropped the formal speech and just goes, "Maji (serious)?"

And honestly, same.

personal thoughts about playing JP games in JP vs EN, a lot of weird thoughts that probably won't make sense to many

not a dig at localization or translation or anything, just a word vomit on how im perceiving things.

theres 2 main categories in my head when i play games made by japanese devs. Western Themed, and Eastern Themed.

for Western Theme, games like final fantasy (all of it), some/few entries of fire emblems, no more heroes, and elden ring all fall into this category.

for Eastern Theme, it's games like persona, shin megami tensei, sekiro, sengoku basara, tales of series and RGG games

in my head, games in the Western Themed box are games i find far more enjoyable in english localization or dub, and actually find some of the japanese script to be kind of off putting. the Eastern Theme would be the opposite, games that are far more enjoyable in full JP than EN.

learning japanese has done quite a bit to my brain and the more i learn the more i think, "@_@ oh god im in a weird place where people won't understand me help"

because see, if i try to explain, it becomes weird and very subjective. and one of the main factor is that language is kind of intrinsically tied to culture in my head, which, :v

trying to type it down to explain anyway:

as an example, calling people by titles such as "Lord", "Sir", "Madame", "Knight", works far better for a Western themed game than an Eastern one. like, yes, that makes sense if i think about it, historically and even right now, those terms instantly spring up the images of a medieval knight and societal system in stone castles. cool beans.

but we don't use the word knight for Samurais. this is a whole other thing referring to the Japanese class of people wandering around with swords serving their feudal lords.

and in JP, it works the same. Kishi is used for Knights rather than the word samurai. for Lords, 卿(kyou) is used for English lords, and 殿(tono) is used for JP lords. but the japanese pronouns are still there, with some of the roots just reminding me of how a stereotype in JP media would speak. the -sama suffix is the same, and other words like -chan or anime/japanese rooted verbal tics can totally get in there, pulling me out of the immersion.

its like running face first into "Tis but a flesh wound" in the script - you know that specific root is in monty python, a fully ENGLISH bit. a good example of JP would be running into a cat who says "wagahai wa neko de aru", refering to nastume soseki's book I Am A Cat.

especially in the case of Final Fantasy. with very few exceptions like 7, a lot of them fit better wtih an EN script bc of how much western themed theatrics and setting is packed in there.

as an example, i think i prefer seifer in ff8 for example going "One of these days, I'm gonna tell ya 'bout my ROMANTIC dream!" like a dumbass jock over "itsuka kikasete yarusa! ore no ro~~~~~mantikku na yume wo na!" like a dumbass JP highscooler (which he kind of is, but still not a dipshit jock)

so its really the little things like that. subs not dubs doesnt work for me anymore, im in a very strange place, kupo.

another thing is really, just... the tropes. the deep disconnect between how people behave irl and how anime thinks people behave irl. kind of like how Hayao Miyazaki puts it in 2014,

so, learning Japanese has actually done a weird bit where it's caused me to actually fully understand the JP, meaning when i pick up on the script getting off putting, it gets off-putting.

when people usually go "subs not dubs", its voiced from a sense that the JP voice is better than EN. but as the years go by this isn't really true anymore, some dubs can have serious quality that's unthinkable back in 2010 ffs. i think this is largely bc anglo-speaking audience do not understand JP, and so builds an imagination between the sub and the tone of the voice acting to carry the work.

but just like old ps1 horror games, that imagination is doing a good bulk of elbow greasing.

to explain:

there are times when JP writers puts in an objectively anime trope or thing. especially in the case of FE, where sometimes that it becomes 'ew' to people who aren't hardcore anime nerds. im talking things like the whole big booba onee-chan Camilla and the kawaii imouto/otouto Sakura and Takumi tropes thats kinda there in FE Fates. and the JP version of Anna's S support in Engage and the weird undertones thats going there.

masking it with subs can cause the audience to kind of brush it off as "aaah those silly japanese" or "ok this is just an anime trope". i mean, hell, check some discourse from people who yell about how this is censorship essentially defending it from what is effectively lolicon tropes and it's just. :v

and thats the thing. once that localization or sub barrier is removed, once im hearing actual JP and past any subconscious filter, i fully see the scene in its original form. i would then have a reaction exactly like hayao miyazaki.

having that ignorance kind of protects an audience from just how deep the writers ouroborous'd themselves into the nerd sphere. i kind of wish i had that sometimes. the creep vibes in some original JP scripts makes me want to crawl out of my skin, and there is no way i can explain this to an audience without first sounding like im disparaging the original work, shitting on the writers, and bringing in my personal bias into the conversation.

which, yeah i guess it kind of is. but man. if elden ring can commit to their bit with anime tropes used in a good/interesting/subtle way, then so can every one else.

when i started learning JP to play JP games never to see the light of localization, this was not the experience i expected, tbh.

so in summary, im totally disillusioned to the idea of Original = Best, Localization = Censorship at this point. that rose colored glasses are hanging on by a thread now. kind of wondering what other stuff i'll run into but it's been a real interesting journey that i totally get if people wont understand.

4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?

I wanna put him in, like, emiya-san chi no kyou no gohan or post True Ending Heaven's Feel if you catch my drift? Like, let the boy be adopted by Shirou and Sakura and eat good food and live a good life, for fuck's sake, and I could even argue that Shirou and Sakura, who were both hurt by a terrible system in their lives and such but managed to leave it all behind (HF), would be the perfect parents for him. Oh but Little Busters tho!! Let him be roped into their shenanigans, that'd be hilarious.

All in all, though, I think I want him in some low-stakes slice-of-life story because he deserves a god-damned break.

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

He reads a lot of books as escapism, to help him deal with his bleak reality— he could taste what it's like to be a person, even if for only when he's immersed in the book. Or just to get some flavor in his life when it is so utterly void of anything that could give him emotions. Books also help him avoid talking to people, as he doesn't want to get attached when he knows he's gonna die anyways. Maybe if he got out of his situation or was never in it, maybe he would've picked something else.

14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character.

I don't have the names for this but I love this sort of big blocky silhouettes from loose baggy clothes if you get what I mean? Clothes that don't hug his body snugly. Clothes that even give him a sense of freedom, perhaps. I don't think his uniform style in canon was necessarily chosen by him really.

Stuff like these, perhaps? With baggy pants, with skirts, either way works— I see him as particularly feminine-leaning ever since I saw this wonderful meta post and I can't unsee it anymore.

I think some of us do, mainly the littles. We generally like multiples of 7, but if you asked for a collective favorite number, the answer would probably be 51. But I don't think many of us have very strong preferences towards any numbers in that way.

Someone in the front is suggesting 18, though, so there's that as an answer.

☀️- Do you have any non-human alters (including hybrids)?

Honestly, it's a genuine question in this system if any of us are truly and only human, as we may be collectively dragon-ish in some way. But yes, we have plenty of non-human folks in here! Constantine's non-human in a general sort of way, Kyou's a werewolf, and Kirlia's a, well, Kirlia, just to name some examples.

🪐- Most chaotic group?

You know, that's actually kind of hard to identify. I would say the SZC, but they're relatively tame, I just see more of what they get up to.

Probably the members of the Unknown Sidesystem. I only get glimpses of what's going on in there whenever the members of it care to share, but they have a certain vibe to them that makes me suspect I wouldn't expect anything that goes on in their sidesystem. A very specific brand of chaos they have going on.

My Review of Requiem of the Rose King

How did I get into this anime? Let’s just see what my thoughts were the second I saw the promo poster.

“This looks like something that should have been made 15 years ago and something Studio Gonzo should have put a pin in. Are there going to be a bunch of Texans doing English accents? This looks to be promising to the female yaoi demographic. How is there not an ALI PROJECT song prepared for this? Wait, can we still get an ALI PROJECT song for this anime? Why isn’t there an ALI PROJECT song for this anime?!”

This story is loosely based on Shakespeare's plays. England has been in a hot-bed of royal fights over which house is fitting of being crowned King of England, the house of York or the house of Lancaster. At the beginning of our story, it’s decided that Henry VI is the rightful king. But let’s see if a certain Richard has a say in the matter.

Richard is the third son to the Duke of York (and his name’s sake). Richard was loved by his father but despised by his mother. Take your pick, it could be because Richard is neither man nor woman, Richard was born under a bad omen, or the fact that Richard looks absolutely nothing like his parents or his brothers. Despite the harsh shitty upbringing, he’s still devoted to his father and wants to help his father pursue the crown.

However, Richard’s father fell to defeat at the hands of the house of Lancaster. But Richard is determined to keep the dream alive by having his elder brothers Edward and George hold the crown once it was won by any means necessary. He’s not afraid of getting his hands dirty or setting up anyone that gets in his way. But aside from that, there is a bit of a love story that revolves around Richard and Henry VI.

Neither of them knows of each other’s family name (at the beginning), but things get tumultuous when everything is out in the open.

BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: Before I go into who is in this anime, I must always praise this one voice actor. Mitsuki Saiga! If you need someone who can play literally every gender in the known world and even a few undiscovered ones and Megumi Ogata is in the can, Mitsuki Saiga can get the job done! Okay now that I got that out of my system, FUNimation nabbed this one at the last minute and saw it quite fitting to give this an English dub. Oh fuck! The Texas brigade dubbing something clearly British! It’s Black Butler all over again where J. Michael Tatum is the clear winner and everything else is on levels between ‘okay’ and ‘cringe’. I don’t know. I’m not brave enough to hear the English version. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.

JAPANESE CAST: *Richard is played by Mitsuki Saiga (known for Drew on Pokemon AG, Maria on FMA, Yelena on Attack on Titan, Henry on Black Clover, Kurako on Princess Jellyfish, Wolfram on Kyou Kara Maou, and Rossiu on Gurren Lagann)

*Henry is played by Hikaru Midorikawa (known for Zel on Slayers, Zora on Black Clover, Tamahome on Fushigi Yugi, Li on Code Geass, Yoshino on Clannad, Best Jeanist on My Hero Academia, and 16 on DBZ)

SHIPPING: Characters screwing each other in more ways than once. There’s a lot of betrayal, usurping, and manipulating people’s emotions just to get their way.

Anyone named Henry loved Richard. Anyone who looked like Henry VI loved Richard. Anyone whose sperm has come from a Henry and has a penis loved Richard. Is that gay enough for you now, fangirls? Okay, how about any women? Yes, there was Ann, Richard’s childhood friend. Ann loves Richard too, but she’s being lead astray because of her father and her betrothed.

Oh sure, Ann does return to Richard. But that’s only after she becomes a pregnant widow. But this is such a staged marriage. They haven’t slept with each other! Well Ann doesn’t know about Richard’s peculiar body, so we can’t blame him there. Richard still yearns for Henry even though he’s long gone. Even after that, Richard finds himself spending nights with Buckingham. Richard almost ended up in certain trouble after many nights of fucking. But the point is, there’s a lot to unpack here. At least Richard isn’t the only person with a messed-up love life in the family. His eldest brother Edward really is no better.

Let’s just say that when it comes to Edward, he has shitty taste in women. He was betrothed to another woman at the start of his kingdom when he met Elizabeth and got married to her. And don’t get me started on that bitch either. She married into the royal family with the mission of destroying it because they killed her first husband. She didn’t love Edward. She just wanted to have babies with him and have them take over and do her bidding when they’re older. Even when married with kids, Edward had a bit of a hedonistic lifestyle. I honestly think he fucked around too much and caught something.

Do I have a ship that I support? I know fans of the franchise have chosen what side they want to be on when it comes to Richard. Team Henry, Team Henry, Team Henry, or Team Catesby. I’m just going along for the ride and seeing what happens next. Go team!

HALFWAY MARK: The York’s getting the crown for England wasn’t going to go down without a fight. Warwick (a long-time ally) turned out to be a double-crosser early on. He betrayed King Edward and offered his daughter Ann to Edward of Lancaster. But to cover his bases, he offered his other daughter to King Edward’s brother George. It all comes crashing down as Warwick is taken out on the battlefield by Buckingham (posed as Richard). The Lancaster family is captured. Edward is murdered in front of his mother by Richard. Edward is fine by this as he does have a thing for Richard. Like I said, any sperm that came from Henry has a thing for Richard.

But the biggest hit for Richard came in the form of learning that Henry was indeed THAT Henry, the previous king and (to Richard) the reason why his father perished. Though we all know that it was Henry’s wife Margaret that killed Richard’s father. Henry winds up with a bout of amnesia and is unable to remember Richard or the time they spent together. Richard’s mother goes and makes things worse by poisoning Henry with words disparaging her son. You’ll find this happens a lot throughout the rest of the series. Hearing Henry repeat his mother’s words made Richard snap and kill Henry. Of course, Richard had orders by his older brother to kill Henry, but I think Richard was acting on impulse. After that, he hooks up with Ann (after he kills her husband, father-in-law, and father).

We then get into a time-leap. King Edward is a skirt-chaser. George is drunk. And Richard is married to Ann and taking care of her and the baby she had with her previous husband. But everyone seems to believe the lie that the kid is Richard’s. Even though Ann’s child looks like her previous husband and IS his. I will not say the names of the kids these people had because everyone’s name is the fucking same. Geez England, add some different names please. Not everybody has to be named Richard, Edward, Henry, and Elizabeth.

ENDING: Richard is now King of England. Now it wasn’t an easy path to get to the throne and he was behind several people in line. First, both of Richard’s brothers died almost at the same time. George was murdered and King Edward croaked from an unspecified illness. Next in line would be King Edward’s eldest son (who is still a child). Richard and Buckingham had to take care of King Edward’s crazy widow in the meantime. She had her eyes on the throne and a slow-moving coup in the works with her supporters. Richard was able to do away with Elizabeth and her children. A few episodes later, two of her children were poisoned and I’m sure Richard will get blamed for that. And then a certain thorn in Richard’s side continues to stir up trouble and that is his mother. She tries to get the public enraged by telling them Richard is a demon. But a stunt by Buckingham and Richard fooled the public and they are all in agreement that he must become king.

But Richard’s problems are only beginning. There’s still that slow-moving coup I was talking about in the works to oust him. Henry might still be alive. Richard’s body is still a cluster-fuck! No, seriously it is! He has breasts, a penis, and now I think he has a uterus. At least it feels like it when he got a check-up and we’re aware of how many nights he’s together with Buckingham. This however wasn’t the only time Buckingham fucked Richard as he kinda betrayed the crown and was beheaded as a result. Now Richard is going through some severe Henry-withdrawal. Oh yeah, Buckingham’s real name was Henry. Imagine that! Another character named Henry that has an unhealthy lust for Richard. Just because Buckingham is dead doesn’t mean the trouble is over. An uprising is coming from this weird guy that we see smiling and plotting, Lord Richmond. He thinks he deserves the crown and wants the death of Richard. In fact, he’s the guy that gave the poison candies to Edward’s sons.

Richard’s wife Ann was worried as her health was declining due to tuberculosis and wants her son to have nothing to do with the crown. So Ann dies and they fake her son’s death and have him go in hiding with a fake name. And then Richard’s crazy mother (who I’m surprised is still alive given the average life span of this family) comes out to call him a demon once more and rooting for Richmond to defeat her son. To top it off, I’m pretty sure he caught tuberculosis from his now deceased wife.

So now it’s a showdown between Richard III and Lord Richmond. Who will come out vict…I don’t even need to finish that question because everyone and their mother knows who wins. Richmond takes out Richard. But we end with Richard’s only loyal ally Catesby coming to rescue him. But we’re pretty sure Richard is done for. Whether it was the battle or the tuberculosis, he’s done for.

Shakespeare works are not for everyone. Even the more amusing ones like A Midsummer Night’s Dream are not for everyone. It’s an odd taste. And it’s not going to help when the mangaka comes out to say that the manga has so much more that the anime has neglected to show and a lot more sex scenes. In my case, it does entice me to read the manga. I’ve seen so many thoughts on the internet surrounding this one particular anime. Most of them hate it and others see it as an underrated classic. I just thought it was okay.

In fact, I would like to think of this anime as a picture book. Maybe it was just bad timing with me and most people who watched this anime at the exact same time as Demon Slayer’s recent season. Because going from that to Requiem can give you whiplash. But the way the animation was, it almost felt like a picture book. That’s the nicest way I can put it for an anime that doesn’t show much in terms of a battle when every other episode has Richard in a battle.

If you are a Shakespeare enthusiast, I would say give it a chance. This wasn’t my cup of tea, but I’m glad I was able to give it a chance. I’ll still stay on the record that Romeo x Juliet was the best anime adaptation of a Shakespeare play.

I'm glad my fic made you like another dynamic of rntn but tanren is pretty similar to rentan. At least, in my experience with a bunch of other tanren shippers' works. The difference is tan is topping this time. I think both are so good

But I think I get where you're coming at. I think what you're referring to are Tanjirou and the scarcity mindset.

As we know, Tanjirou has always been a very simple guy. He's grateful for his family and his previous life before Muzan fucked it up, and even after it happened, he tried to make do with it.

That was why he was very hard-working and focused, and that's why he never doubted Nezuko after she turned.

but there are times when he doubted himself or felt down. It's very natural for anyone, esp with his background and his role as the "head" of the family.

His family counts on him as the breadwinner, his siblings look up to him and seek him for solace, he co-parent with Kie, and he continues to play that part so he could take care of demon Nezuko.

It might not seem so, but if it happened in reality it's quite extreme for the eldest siblings to take this much burden. After all, a family is a system and everyone should take part in it in some way.

You can actually see this scarcity mindset being pointed out during the final battle of Yuukaku Hen by Nezuko from a flashback. Basically, she told him to stop apologizing for everything and always try to take the blame.

The scarcity mindset manifests in the way he tries to push himself past the limit because he keeps seeing his flaws or lacking. Either in his breathing or the fact that he's not made up or born to be someone as amazing and legendary as Yoriichi. So, he always apologizes for these flaws. It seems trivial but it can be pretty self-sabotaging.

I feel despite the situation though, Tanjirou still had decent support whenever he needed them and he's just really down-to-earth to the point where he doesn't harm others because of it. So, in my mind, it didn't translate to possessiveness.

Though, esp in angsty romantic scenarios, this scarcity mindset made him quite an intense character.

He'll try to be an amazing lover despite having never been with anyone before or before they're together, he'll try to play his role as best as he could to the point where it's almost overwhelming. In A Paper Kimono, he tried to be a good tsuguko but since he can't flame breath he apologizes for it an if you noticed, he tried to make up for it by serving Kyou with something else. Though he also enjoyed every moment of it and he did it still with moderation, he clung to these activities almost like a lifeline because it gave him a sense of control. Just like how he reminded himself he's the eldest son or a big brother.

I feel this is a point where Kyou and Tan share some similarities because they both have leadership. but I think Kyoujurou's doesn't come from this mindset, it's actually the opposite of it. (I think it's called the abundance mindset, iirc)

A scarcity mindset revolves around the lack of resources but instead of that, Kyoujurou very much trusts his support system and as we know from his background, he grew up very privileged. That is why he is willing to take such a huge risk such as dying while protecting others. It's also why he thinks his father will bounce back if he continues his legacy and is also why he doesn't mind Senjurou not following in his footstep.

lastly, I often see possessiveness getting associated with top/bottom dynamics and I actually didn't intend it in that way whenever I wrote something. In my time loop AU, it has rentan too, but I still made Tanjirou possessive-ish if you'd like to call it. It really is just something that made sense with the canonverse to me

Nobunaga detested his sons’ love for bugaku. Bugaku is what leads one to spend excessively and forget family affairs, and it will cause disturbance in the country. A lord should not be fond of such things.

*) The “Lord” honourific here is -kyou 卿. Traditionally this is the honourific attached to people of the Third Rank in the imperial court or higher, as well as the chief officials of the Eight Ministries in the Ritsuryou system. This is why Nobutada has this honourific, but Nobutaka doesn’t. Nobutaka only had the Fifth Rank. 

Not seen in this segment, but Nobukatsu also has the 卿 honourific sometimes. 

**) 三位中将 Sanmi no Chuujou is a Lieutenant Commander rank in the Imperial Guard. A Chuujou is typically a Fourth Rank (Shi-i 四位) in court, but “Sanmi no Chuujou” is a special rank where despite the Chuujou title, the person is of the Third Rank in court.

I wasn’t sure how to phrase this in the translation, so I just left it as-is like in the Shinchoukouki and write this note.

It occurs to me to note that the “volumes” I’m referring to is more like a “sub-volume” in a modern compilation. As old Japanese “books” don’t exactly contain very much text, in modern print several volumes are usually bundled together in one book. In this case, the Seishuu Gunki in modern print is divided into two books. “Volume 8″ would be one of the sub-volumes in the second book.

A brief description

Kyou has an interesting combination of characteristics. He appears to be very cheerful and naive, even jokingly teasing his friends, but he possesses an analytical mind unrivaled by many. That was what allowed them to attain a position as a magical warrior, outsmarting the system. He is also very fond of the artistic side of things, often spending time with nature. He is currently a concert pianist.

He hung around the Rune Association since his early life, where he met his childhood friend, Miyamoto Kagura. He used to visit her in the library, often making her company. He'd also manage to get her out of there, oftentimes strolling through the association's grounds or playing songs on the piano to her.

He became a magical warrior after exploiting a loophole in the contract rules with the help of the now Grand Rune Master Kagura. Both of them also created the team Ex Libris.
