The Story of King Arthur and His Knights - Howard Pyle
I’ve loved the stories of King Arthur and his knights for as long as I remember. I read this version in college after finding it for cheap at Barnes and Noble and just completely fell into it. The Arthurian style of stories with knights and swords and kingdoms, with good versus bad/heroes versus villains, and the melding of realistic and fantastical story elements has always been a favorite of mine.
It’s no surprise that my first story is of a hero that bases his alter ego on that of a knight or that the hero’s name, Lance Locke, is an homage to the original White Knight himself, Lancelot. I was reading this book around the same time as I was writing the first draft of my own book. And while there aren’t many one to one parallels between my book and Arthurian legend beyond the names of the hero’s secret identity and alter ego, this book and the Arthurian stories played a huge role in shaping how I view storytelling and how I view heroes in general.
*merlins magic gets exposed in front of the knights*
merlin, magic user: oh fuck
arthur, finally taking this opportunity to pretend as if he just found out merlin has magic after agonizing for the past month on how to bring it up: you have magic?
lancelot, merlin defender, already knew of merlin’s magic: no! i have magic
gwaine, merlin defender, already knew of merlin’s magic, lover of chaos, ride or die: no, i have magic!
mordred, desperate for his hero’s approval bc no matter what he’s done emrys just stares at him with distrust and the poor boy is tired and so close to tears: no…i have magic.
percival, raised by druids and bonded strongly with mordred over that and does Not agree with the persecution of magic in camelot, had an inkling that merlin had magic but no proof: no. i have magic.
*leon and elyan exchange a look, elyan, amused and leon, exhausted, elyan shrugs*
elyan, knows how much gwen adores merlin and completely understands her stance bc merlin…is merlin, down to clown and put on a show, really playing up the dramatics: no! i have magic.
leon, exhausted, has known of merlin’s magic since he stepped foot in camelot, knows of his feelings for arthur and arthur’s feelings for him, knows arthur knows of merlin’s magic and wouldn’t harm him, thinks everyone is being absolutely ridiculous:
*the knights stare hard at leon and even merlin looks slightly offended at leon not jumping to his defense with the rest of the knights, arthur hasn’t said anything and is staring at leon expectantly*
my favourite merlin hc of mine is that arthur will only return when merlin gives up on the idea of him doing so. That when merlin gives up on him coming back, his magic starts to fade with his hope and that the danger albion faces that requires the king to return isnt world wars or global pandemics, its when the world loses its magic.
Basically merlin is albions greatest need
Edit: if arthur did come back bc of this, him and merlin would reunite and then I imagine Merlin would be so stressed and on edge for months he would just constantly be in a state of ???? Looking at the world confused on what catastrophe was finally so bad that arthur returned (not knowing it was him who was the catastrophe) he would probably only realise later when Arthur cracked a joke about how bad merlin looked when arthur first got there.
Arthur calls a meeting of his inner round table (those that sat with him at the table of the ancient kings) except Merlin. He also tells everyone else not to tell Merlin. At this meeting they decide that Merlin will have a seat at the Royal Round Table.
Why is Merlin getting an official seat at the official and highly sought after Royal Round Table?
Because Arthur wants to marry him, of course!
This is step one to getting all the stuck up nobles to except Merlin as Arthur’s choice of spouse.
Does Merlin know that that’s Arthur’s intention with his appointment? No.
Does Merlin know that Arthur wants to marry him? No.
Does Merlin even know that Arthur has feelings for him? No.
Is Merlin increasing frustrated that he keeps getting excluded from half of the inner circle meetings despite gaining a seat at the official one? Yes.
Is Merlin going to give Arthur a piece of his mind once finds out that this entire roundabout thing was just a plot to get him as his husband? Undoubtedly.
Is Merlin going to be completely badass and show his capability as “queen” despite not knowing what’s going on? Absolutely.
i know for a fact i have made this post before but for me it's very important that bbc merlin is a pointless tragedy. it wouldn't be good (it's frequently not good anyway but it would be a lot further away from good) if it wasn't a pointless tragedy! it's simply not arthuriana if it doesn't go past the high point of the heroic/legendary/high medieval romance stuff and end with detailed rundowns of exactly how everybody got betrayed and died like that is what makes it real arthuriana to me and not just a silly show about a wizard
might sound like an hater but i find absolutely hilarious when in ff people portray the knights more loyal to merlin than to arthur when they stated multiple times they would sacrificed their life for arthur’s sake and not only out of duty
Let me introduce you to the White Knight’s titular hero, Lance Locke, through similar characters/character inspirations!

sorry. but the idea of old man merlin puttering around in his kitchen in the early morning, fussing over the seating and chair logistics at his (round) kitchen table, and then getting frustrated with himself at coming up short- and having the bitter realization that he’ll always come up short, by a whole table actually, kills me.
“This is beyond understanding.“ said the king. "You are the wisest man alive. You know what is preparing. Why do you not make a plan to save yourself?” And Merlin said quietly, “Because I am wise. In the combat between wisdom and feeling, wisdom never wins.”

this scene is so satisfying to watch idk why... Annis, who has never known the type of person Arthur is, thinks it's a trick.
Meanwhile Morgana, even though she's fighting against him, for her it's hard to comprehend why Annis thinks it's such a big deal or it's trick.
Morgana's "cause he's Arthur" Punch you directly in the gut! She sees nothing amiss, for that's how it is. Any person who knows Arthur, they should know how he is, it's such a easy thing.
He won't risk life of his men, he's Arthur and therefore it's no trick!
merthur love confession but make it river song style!!!
When you love the Doctor, it's like loving the stars themselves. You don't expect a sunset to admire you back! And if I happen to find myself in any danger, let me tell you... the Doctor isn't stupid enough or sentimental enough and he is certainly not in love enough to find himself standing in it with me...
River is Merlin. Merlin is River. Arthur is the Doctor.
