Nightwing (2011) Issue #29
Nightwing is the biggest inspiration in my own superhero stories. Dick Grayson is the heart and soul of DC Comics and I try to put the same kind of hope and light in my stories as I fell in love with in his. While the Nightwing ethos touches every part of my writing, no where is that touch stronger than in my first series of shorts and in my first character, The Street Rat. I didn’t even realize how much Eddie was inspired by Dick until I read the final edits before posting. I can only hope Eddie makes someone else believe in the potential and goodness of people the way Dick has done for me. I made this account to talk about my own writing, but it’ll also be a place where I share what I’m reading, my general superhero thoughts, and, most likely, this will end up being primarily a Nightwing fan account.

'He was beaming the air furnace-hot. Dean moved silently speaking in poetry.'
[Excerpt below the cut!]
Eli's smile was bright and beaming as he leaned in, cupping Dean’s chin and pulling him in for a kiss. “Hi,” he mumbled back as he pulled away, their noses brushing together. “Sorry I’m late.” “It’s okay. It’s fine.” He leaned forward and tugged Eli back in, their bodies molded together against the wall. The air was chilly, but Eli’s body was warm against his, his fingers furnace-hot as they brushed over his cheeks and ran through his hair. They needed to talk. Dean wanted to talk. They couldn’t in the car, not with Denise there. Eli had probably been praying that morning and the pain was still fresh. his lips were so soft, even with their slight chap, and he didn’t want to ruin it all by talking about something real. But he had to. Sometimes, reality was truly his worst enemy. “How are you?” Dean asked, pulling away, his thumb brushing the narrow stroke of Eli’s cheekbone, just over the faint freckle at the corner of his eye. “I mean…you know.” Eli was silent for a moment, eyes drifting shut when Dean moved back to give him space. He opened them again and swung his backpack from his shoulder, digging around inside of it until he pulled out a plastic bag of chocolate-covered hazelnuts, and ripped the seal open with one of his few fingernails not bitten to a stub. Taking one out and popping it into his mouth, he held the bag out to Dean. He took one silently, and Eli’s left cheek bulged as the hazelnut slipped to the side and he said, “I’m okay.” The two squatted down against the wall, shovelling the chocolate hazelnuts in so they wouldn’t have to speak. Dean knew he had to speak first. Eli loved talking about feelings, loved expressing himself in poetry and personal essays and general noisiness. But when it came to his dad, that expressiveness shrank inside him into nothing. Dean understood that well enough. So it was up to him. Another blackout poem from my YA superhero WIP, ‘Homebirds’! Dean's got a secret! Someone else might be involved.

Superhero Fiction: Academy of Super-Heroes
Tumblr media
Back in 1994, after getting kinda burned on a shared universe superhero writing thing that started bending in directions I disliked, I decided to launch one that I was in charge of. I based it on the "Academy of Super-Heroes" Champions campaign I ran in college (with a few other GMs running games set elsewhere in that world), with some bits from the Modern Knights (a game I wrote and had up on DTRPG for a while) campaign I ran in grad school. After taking out all the stuff that the Champions people owned, I launched it as a near-future post-apocalyptic (July 6, 1998 was a Very Bad Day) version of the Academy of Super-Heroes set in the year 2022.
Yeah, last year, at this point. In the almost 30 years that I and others have written stories in the setting, the timeline has advanced to 2027, which about tracks with Comic Book Time.
At its peak in the late 90s, I had several other writers working in the ASH universe with me, culminating in an insane crossover idea that ate up an entire year to write. Since then, the other three writers involved in that crossover have all gone on to become published SFF writers or essayists, and while there's been a couple of people getting involved since then, it's been mostly me, which meant the output tended to fit my mood...and during my job-hopping years I spent so much of my writing energy constantly revising curriculum that it took me years to finish a single six issue arc. But finish it I did, and took a break from the main ASH series and all the world-spanning intrigue and suchlike.
I didn't abandon the setting, though, but I backed off to a smaller stage, picking up on one of the locations largely left fallow since its main writer left over twenty years ago, and decided what it needed was Magical Girls.
Anyway, if you're interested in checking out a few million words of free if professional-quality (in that just about everyone involved has been paid to do fiction, me included, even if I didn't try to make it my career) geopolitically charged superhero science fiction, check it out at http://www.eyrie.org/~dvandom/ASH. There's over 300 stories, plus loads of information files, a wiki, and plenty of art (most of it by me, but some by actual pros).

Fantasy Indies December 2023: Saturday Snippet
I thought I'd repost the opening lines of BPM: Draft 1 because I don't think they ever made over to Tumblr when I posted them to Insta the other day🤦‍♀️
🦸‍♀️ We used to be a team. I know what you must be thinking: who’s ‘we?’ And what do you mean ‘used to?’—well, I’m getting there. Long ago—okay, fine, it wasn’t that long ago, but this is my story and if I’m really going to do this, it’s going to be my way. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a story to tell. My story. 🦸‍♀️

What'd You Think of Blue Beetle?
Image: Warner Bros./DC Comics Warner Bros. has spent years announcing (and quietly canceling) DC movies of all different shades, which made it a bit of a surprise that a movie based on Blue Beetle actually made it to release. DC films have been in an odd place for nearly a decade now, and this movie was now different, having originally been intended for HBO Max before getting boosted to a…

Renegades Series - Marissa Meyer
This was my favorite series I read this year. All my life I’ve looked for superhero novels, but there weren’t really any in the mainstream. And while I’ve learned to enjoy Graphic Novels this past year, I still don’t fall into those the same way I do with books. Finding Marissa Meyer’s Renegades series was such a fun experience for me because of that.
Nova being a villain at the start shifts the perspective of the book and raises a lot of questions as to whether the heroes are actually the good guys. Moving from Renegades to Arch-Enemies to Supernova, Meyer creates a really interesting world of superpowered people and the struggles that go with keeping people safe in such a world, especially when the government is being run by people with powers.
The characters are really where the series shines. Nova/Nightmare/Insomnia and Adrian/Sketch/Sentinel are the two main characters whose perspectives we see. Both of them have secrets that they’re keeping from each other and the Renegades as a whole, leading to much of the tension in the book. They are one of the best pairs I’ve read in YA in a long time and both of their desire to see the Renegades be better than they are is the driving catalyst for the series.
The supporting characters are maybe even more enjoyable. Max/The Bandit is my favorite character in the story. The rest of the team Oscar/Smokescreen, Ruby/Red Assassin, and Danna/Monarch are a delight. The council as a whole is fantastic, but Adrian’s dads Hugh/Captain Chromium and Simon/The Dread Warden, do a ton of the heavy lifting in helping to understand what the Renegades are and what they stand for. The other Anarchists, especially Leroy/Cyanide, help to humanize the other side of the Renegade’s battle and allow for Nova’s story to carry the weight that it does.
The Renegades series is one that I would absolutely recommend and it’s one that gives me hope there is an audience for books like mine!

'The tune of the lights, the shadows - this greenery made him buzz with life.' [Excerpt below the cut!]
Hari had always thought Logan was pretty. Lots of girls were pretty, sure. Denise was pretty, too. Catherine was gorgeous. But Logan had a way of carrying herself that he’d always liked. She sloped like a cat, graceful and sure of every step.  Only right now, she could hardly take two straight steps. He held one of her toned arms slung around his shoulders, while Denise supported her on the other side. Catherine’s house had plenty of bathrooms, but none of them had been closer than the drainage grid out in the backyard. Logan barely made it into her secluded little corner before she wrenched herself from their grip and bent over, emptying the contents of her stomach onto the ground. “Give her space,” Denise said, voice calm as she rubbed Logan’s back. He did as she asked and took a step away, a shiver running over his bare arms. He hadn’t thought to grab his jacket; Logan’s situation had been a little too urgent. He tried to tune out the sounds of her gagging and Denise’s soothing mumbling as he scanned the garden. The place was dimly lit by the outdoor lights scattered around the patio and up the slope of the grass. Up by the steps to the hydrangea bushes, he spotted a pair of figures hidden in the shadows. He didn’t mind being out here. He’d always loved this garden. It had so much more greenery than their little balcony at home. It made him feel so…alive, in a way he couldn’t explain.  Logan groaned and brought his attention back to her.
Another blackout poem from ‘Homebirds’! I like the more nature-focused image I went with for this one. Makes sense for Hari.

Quote
In many MCU origin stories, and those within the superhero genre at large, family is a common subject of emphasis in one way or another. Often it’s the tragic loss of a protagonist’s parents or another family member that sets them on their hero’s journey to begin with. They grow up to be brooding loner types like Batman...or Moon Knight, or they might find family in similar outcasts, like Peter Quill with his Guardians of the Galaxy. Family has been a recurring theme throughout much of Phase 4 in particular: 'Eternals' and 'Black Widow' focus on makeshift super-families, Clint Barton tries to get back to his family and the farm in 'Hawkeye', Wanda Maximoff grieves the loss of her family in 'WandaVision', the latest Peter Parker loses the latest Aunt May in 'Spider-Man: No Way Home', and Shang-Chi and his sister, Xialing, team up to face their father [several years after the loss of their mother] in 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings'. One of the ways that 'Ms. Marvel' has separated itself from other MCU projects, though, is how the series has centered on Kamala’s family as such an influential part of her identity and an ongoing presence in her life—even without them having any powers or, I don’t know, being brutally murdered in a dark alley before her eyes.

Werewolf By Night
“Werewolf By Night” is a breath of fresh air when it comes to the endless content machine of Marvel’s Phase Four.
Jack Russell is a monster hunter who has been invited by Verussa Bloodstone, along with four other monster hunters, to a competitive hunt. They’re all competing to see who the next wielder of the Bloodstone will be. In order to find out, they must hunt a creature with the Bloodstone attached to its back. It turns out, Jack has a secret.
Like many other people, I enjoyed this a lot. There’s something nostalgic about watching a Halloween-themed television special. Pair that with the classic 1930′s and 1940′s horror aesthetics and you have something truly special. With all the superhero fatigue that’s been going on, it’s fun to watch the interesting lore of the MCU mixed with Universal monster-inspired characters. It expands the universe in a new and intriguing way, just as “Guardians Of The Galaxy” introduced space, “Dr. Strange” introduced magic, and “Loki” introduced the multiverse. It makes this world feel more than just superheroes and instead a place where this arcane power has always existed. It makes superheroes just feel like the latest iteration of those who wielded power. On top of that, it’s refreshing to get a property that didn’t concern itself with tying the characters with the larger MCU. Not everything in this world has to be connected. I think that was one of the biggest problems with the Star Wars franchise since it all had to be tied back to the Skywalkers. “Werewolf By Night” truly feels inspired because it’s made by someone who clearly loves the art of cinema. The black and white filter mixed with the film grain and cigarette burns really feels like a love letter to the movies that started it all. It’s just a shame that Marvel didn’t use this opportunity to shoot on film instead of digital. It would’ve made this television movie feel a lot more special. I loved seeing the practical effects because practical effects in older movies are what ignited my fascination with filmmaking in the first place. I hope this means that we’ll get more television specials that adhere to a more classic aesthetic. It worked for “X” and “Pearl”, so I would definitely love to see Marvel take another shot at it. Honestly, I don’t think I would mind the MCU making a hard shift from superheroes to horror if this is the level of quality we’d be getting. It would be a bold, but welcome way to shift the MCU to make sure it stays relevant. I also hope that this film shows Marvel that people want a more violent approach to the right characters. The only thing I would complain about is that I wished this movie was a bit longer to flesh out its characters a bit more. They were all interesting, but I feel like I didn’t get much from them. Other than that, this is one of those instances where loving to see something different really paid off.
