OVERVIEW: "We met up by the Capitol Records building and eventually ended up in a beach parking lot in Santa Monica. Same lot you would have parked in if you had a car and were going to Arthur Lake's parents home in ‘76 to skate their pool. Pictures from this day ended up on the cover of "CHECK YOUR HEAD" and on various other merchandise the boys put out.

This is one of my FAVORITES from the day.

Hearing this album in the studio with them for the first time while they were working on the sequencing is what inspired me to ask them to do the photo session. They already had the LP cover done I was told, but that was fine by me, once I faxed them some of these they changed direction and threw a Fax on the cover of the LP. On the cassette and later CD they used the actual photograph. Inspired, conquered. Great day, amazing work. They also met AWOL for the first time this day, since i asked him if he'd mind hauling us around in his van and hang out."

The Tourney of the Hand, When All The Smiles Died

And double the bang for your buck, it's a two part diorama! One of the most interesting things GRRM sometimes does is provide us the climax to a characters story before we even know enough about them to recognise how significant it is. On your first time reading AGoT, this is probably just a cool action scene if it even registers on your radar at all. Only afterwards do we learn how much Sandor's life has been defined by his fear and hatred of his brother, how significant it is standing up to him, but also the idealism that he stands up for Loras Tyrell, the idealised pretty-boy knight, and that he doesn't aim any blows at Gregor's unhelmeted head. People clamouring for Cleganebowl on that thrones show didn't realise that a) it had already happened and b) the resolution wasn't winning a fight, it was letting some of that trauma go.

The miniatures are Games Workshop ones that are slightly out of scale with the ASOIAF ones, but that sort of works for this clash of titans. The hounds head helmet was my own adaptation of course, and I spent a long time deciding a suitable shield for Sandor that would distinguish him from his brother, before remembering he's literally Joffrey's sworn shield. I'm happy with the way the posing really carries across that Gregor is trying to kill, while Sandor is only fighting defensively.

Mike D described the experience of working up to the release as "this moment where you love these records so much and you're thrilled and you love them and you're completely defeated at the same time."

It starts with the usual 'Justice League has to summon the Ghost King to battle a world-ending threat.' Stick. They decided to do it in the Fortress of Solitude, which took some time to convince Clark to do, but it was the only place that had the possibility to hold the Ghost King if he went off the rocks, especially with all the added protection John did.

A few minutes passed as everyone held their breath before the waterfall started moving up. Like a volcano, the luminescent liquid shot up and hit the ceiling, falling into drops around everyone. From the water, a shadowy figure appeared, giant and making the water glow brighter with their presence.

For a few seconds after the glowing fountain continued erupting until stopping suddenly and falling back into the hole, a giant eldritch figure revealed as the hole closed up under it.

It looked sort of humanoid, but the most eye-catching thing was its skin. It looked like the galaxy—stars and constellations, planets, and meteors—the being looked like it was made from the galaxy. The stars and planets spun across its skin? And atop his head were wispy white locks, not held down by gravity and flowing with the air in the confined space. On his back was a long cape that reached the floor, and he (it? She? Did gods have a gender, because this being looked more like a god than Zeus did) bent his legs at an angle to not bump his head against the ice roof.

Everyone watched with bated breath as the king, the being, the god reached inside his cape and seemingly grabbed something, coming out with a clenched fist and slowly moving it towards the youngest Robin, the child. Batman barely had any time to swoop in front of his son when the eldritch being opened his hand, and right there, in his palm.

A lollipop.

A green crystal lollipop that made superman fall from his place in the sky and Jon back away from his friend with a pained expression.

The ghost king just gave robin a freaking kryptonite lollipop.

Meanwhile, danny is just wondering why the child touched by death won't take the treat.

Incomplete list of stuff that made me go apeshit reading Fellowship for the first time, medievalist edition (part II)

Part I here. Disclaimer: this is for fun!

Love that people keep stressing that they are going to the ELVES for COUNCIL. Old English names, especially among the rulers of Wessex, Northumbria, Mercia, etc, were often Elf Theme Names, one of the most famous and enduring of which is Alfred. Written the old way, Ælfræd or Ælfred (as in Alfred the Great), means Elf-Council, aka "counseled by elves". In their hearts... everyone wants to be Alfred... possibly this is only funny 2 me.

Tom Bombadil doing a training montage in the fucking magic system of Middle Earth?? He teaches Frodo to recite a poem that will summon him, Tom Bombadil, in times of need! Frodo gets kidnapped by undead wights in a barrow (like many a good young person in an Old Norse saga before him) and dutifully recites this magic poem. Frodo learned Recite Magic Poem! At this point I gave up on trying to be normal about anything. As such, I'm pausing on Tom Bombadil again.

It helped (?? not psychologically) that Tom Bombadil recited something that felt a bit familiar, when he banished the wights. It's not anything like a direct translation, if indeed it bears any purposeful resemblance to the actual recorded medieval galdor called Against a Wen. Galdor can also protect! This just happens to be a banishment.

Gollum got exiled (the worst thing the early medieval and apparently proto-hobbit law could do to you) but not even for murder. No one found out about the murder. He just sucked.

ALSO Gollum lied and said that his matriarch (who exiled him) gave him the Ring. This implies it was plausible she'd give out rings, implying female ring-giver (standard role of a king). This is mentioned once and never again. ok!!

One last fun fact about galdor: it is the word at the end of "nightingale" isn't that lovely? Luthien's name in-universe means nightingale. This is fine!

I spent a lot of time researching Aragorn's favorite rock. I love these books. If I recall correctly it's a real rock! but possibly. just a cool rock.
