NXT TakeOver WarGames 2019 A HEEL TURN TO REMEMBER

Being an avid wrestling fan from a young age I have seen numerous angles, endless swerves, countless disappointing pay offs, and many great matches. However, at this stage of my wrestling viewership, I live for the moments that are completely unexpected and hard to predict. This past weekend, NXT delivered two great moments of unpredictability. Leading up to the PPV, there was a lot of speculation of the final member for Tommaso Ciampa’s team. When the time came to reveal the final member, NXT sent the crowd into a fenzy when Kevin Owen’s music hit! The Prize Fighter is back to NXT and back his ways of aggressive and dominant wrestling. To see KO face off against the Undisputed Era was fun and exciting to watch as a fan other both. KO teeing off on Cole or O’Reily was such a highlight, especially given their history in ROH and PWG together. I didn’t know it at the time, but KO was the right pick to really put this match over the time.

However, there is one moment that, for me, overshadowed the ENTIRE PPV. A defining moment and the turning point of a career. At the beginning of the program, announcers revealed Mia Yim was attacked backstage and taken to a local medical facility. Dakota Kai would take her place on the Wargames team, a spot she had previously lost out on by losing to Mia YIm. When it came time for Dakota Kai to enter the match, she would ultimately turn on her teammates, brutalizing her “best friend” Tegen Nox in the process. And yes, ladies and gentleman when I say brutalized it is no exaggeration.

Dakota Kai, up until this point, came off as a predictable, cookie cutter babyface. She reminded me a lot of Bayley in her run in NXT, but with less of a push. Kai is nice and smiley, everyone’s friend. When she went out on injury she made a quiet return resuming her role as the plan jane babyface. Her in ring return lacked a certain intensity, but that all changed last night at WarGames. Dakota Kai’s heel turn may be one of the best heel turns in recent memory, with Kai really making the most out of this opportunity. Kai’s ability to execute this ruthless and physically change in her character is what made this such a success. Not to mention Tegan Knox’s selling to put this storyline over. The story telling leading to this moment was excellent. To have an athlete to the degree of Kai having to earn her spot on the team and failing to do so by not being able to beat Blazer, the baddest woman in the women’s division was unfair especially when you take into account the lack of test anyone else on the team faced. The resentment Kai must have felt when her best friend and tag partner makes the team yet makes no effort to vouch her Kai. Dakota Kai made it impossible for anyone to undervalue her again after last night. The facial expressions, the intensity and the viciousness in Dakota as she slammed the cage to Nox’s exposed surgically repaired knee over and over and over again. Tegan crying in the background really sold the moment. It was a moment where reality and scripted wrestling were blurred. The referees trying to remove Kai to the back was good, but when GM William Regal came out only to get a forearm to the face was a great moment, one that I argue give Kai even more credibility in this turn.

The announce team could have done a better job of cluing the audience in that Dakota Kai most have been responsible for Mia Yim’s attack to further give Dakota heat. Dakota Kai had no regard for authority, no regard for the safety of the other competitors, and did not give a damn about validation from being on Rhea Ripley’s team. As the cries from Tegan Nox echoe in the background, the last shot of Kai looking on defiantly to the ring still resonates.

I’m excited to see where this heel run goes for Kai. Dakota pleasantly shocked me and made me jump out of my seat. Dakota Kai is for real, and she will never be undervalued again.

These two were arguably at the peak of their careers and had respectable title runs. Who would win? The heel who demanded respect and claimed he was the best in the world?
