Kamus Sejarah Indonesia yang disusun oleh Robert Cribb dan Audrey Kahin menulis bahwa Kenpeitai merupakan pasukan polisi militer Jepang yang dibentuk pada 1881, dan perannya kemudian diperluas di Indonesia yang diduduki dan di tempat-tempat lain untuk mencakup pengawasan penduduk sipil, penyensoran, dan pengumpulan intelijen.
Lebih lanjut, Cribb dan Kahin melanjutkan, Kenpeitai memiliki reputasi buruk karena melakukan kekejaman. Dari 538 anggota stafnya di Jawa pada akhir Perang Dunia II, 199 orang kemudian diajukan ke pengadilan atas tujuan kejahatan perang.

Kevin Baird dan Sangkot Marzuki menerbitkan buku khusus tentangnya, diterbitkan Komunitas Bambu bertajuk "Eksperimen Keji Kedokteran Penjajahan Jepang: Tragedi Lembaga Eijkman & Vaksin Maut Romusha 1944-1945".
Dalam buku itu dikisahkan bahwa sore hampir lindap pada 3 Juli 1945. Dua penjaga Jepang mengantar seorang ilmuwan sekaligus dokter terbaik kelahiran Indonesia itu menuju satu ritual yang mempertemukannya dengan pedang algojo. Mochtar selalu berperawakan ramping. Setelah 10 bulan dipenjara, dengan tiga bulan pertama siksaan hebat, dapat dipastikan ia menjadi sangat kurus dan lemah. Sehelai karung katun kumuh menutup kepalanya, tradisi bagi tawanan yang akan dijatuhi hukuman mati oleh militer Jepang.
Mochtar yang menduduki jabatan di Lembaga Eijkman dan pengajar di Ika Dai Gaku menjadi tertuduh atas tewasnya sejumlah romusha di kamp Klender Jakarta. Berdasarkan bukti-bukti yang dikumpulkan oleh Baird dan Sangkot Marzuki, tuduhan itu tak terbukti.
Keikhlasan Mochtar menjadi tameng agar para dokter dan staf di Lembaga Eijkman tak mendapatkan siksaan yang lebih kejam dan apalagi diseret menuju hukuman mati.
Kisah lain seperti dikutip oleh Baird dan Marzuki dari buku "125 Tahun Pendidikan Dokter di Indonesia" bahwa ada sejumlah nama yang menjadi korban eksekusi Jepang. Diantaranya adalah Dr. Raden Soesilo (ahli malaria terkenal di Lembaga Eijkman, juga adik salah satu pendiri Boedi Oetomo), Dr. Achmad Diponegoro (keturunan langsung Pangeran Diponegoro), Dr. Sunarjo, dan Dr. Agusdjam, yang semuanya alumni STOVIA.
Tak diketahui persis sebetulnya apa yang menjadi alasan Jepang mengeksekusi mereka, kecuali kasus Dokter Soesilo, Jepang menuduhnya melakukan kontak dengan kapal selam Amerika yang muncul ke permukaan Indonesia.
Selain itu Baird dan Marzuki juga mencatat bahwa terdapat pembantaian terhadap lebih dari 21.000 orang di Pontianak, Kalimantan Barat, antara April 1943 dan Juni 1944. Korbannya adalah bangsawan, dokter, akademisi, pengusaha, dan warga sipil yang sepertinya dipilih secara acak.
Ternyata benar, penjajahan apapun bentuknya harus dihapuskan di atas muka bumi, karena ia telah menginjak hak-hak kemerdekaan dan kemanusiaan.

David Koepp is the author of the novel Aurora, available from Harper. It is the official July pick of the TNB Book Club.
Koepp has written or co-written the screenplays for more than thirty films, including Carlito's Way (1993), Jurassic Park (1993), Mission: Impossible (1996), Panic Room (2002), Spider-Man (2002), War of the Worlds (2005), Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), Angels & Demons (2009), and Kimi (2022).
As a director, his work includes the films The Trigger Effect (1996), Stir of Echoes (1999), Secret Window (2004), Ghost Town (2007), Premium Rush (2012), and You Should Have Left (2020). Ghost Town and Premium Rush were co-written with John Kamps.
Koepp’s first novel, Cold Storage, was published in 2019. His story "Yard Work," narrated by Kevin Bacon, was released by Audible Originals in July 2020.
He was born in Pewaukee, Wisconsin and graduated from UCLA’s film school in 1986. He lives in New York City with his wife and children.

Il 17 e il 18 febbraio si tiene nella cittadina di Stresa (VCO), sul Lago Maggiore, in Piemonte, la prima edizione dell'International Circus Festival Stresa organizzato dalla famiglia di Fabrizio Medini sotto lo proprie strutture (Circo Peppino Medini). Il Circo è già montato sul lungolago, in Piazza Marconi, da una settimana per ospitare una serie di spettacoli di Carnevale, nell'ambito dell'iniziativa Carnival Circus.

“OH, FOR FUCK’S SAKE.” Kevin despised Christmas. He hated the cheerful carols being sung, the ugly sweaters, the overkill when it came to candies, and the fake smiles all around the room. While the festivities were bliss for everyone else --- he hated them. Christmas at the Deaver’s household was not like most people. Nothing but fake smiles and putting up with appearances for the guest's sake. There were no happy memories when it came to it. Not then and definitely not now.
BUT LEAVE IT FOR ERIK TO CONVINCE HIM. To attend the annual Van de Kamp Christmas party. The Van de Kamps were old friends of his parents. Bree Van de Kamp was actually a very good friend of their late mother too. And Kevin hated it. It was a whole session of flashbacks coming to mind, one right after the other. The Stepford Wives vibe, the pearl necklaces, the eggnog, the decorations... everything about it left him a sour taste on his mouth. Enough to make him want to vomit. But Erik was happy. Shaking hands. Exchanging smiles...
SHIT. Kevin rolled his eyes and abandoned the main portion of the gathering, choosing a quiet place by the kitchen where his only company was the vintage Scotch in his hand. How he hated Christmas. And it would seem that he wasn’t the only one tired of that bullshit. Andrew --- that was his name right --- was also there. Alone and sulking in the kitchen, probably too damn tired to deal with the pretenses of everything being utterly perfect when things probably weren’t.
A FEELING KEVIN KNEW FAR TOO WELL. “Rough night?” Bringing his glass to his lips, Kevin approached the younger man. He could see the same rebellious glint on the other man’s eyes that he once had when he was younger. How they despised that sort of thing. That theater put for other people to see and enjoy. A full-on fucking circus. “I know the feeling. I’ve been there too. It doesn’t get better. You can only pray to move out and then come up with excuses to avoid attending this sort of thing.”
EYES SCANNED THE ROOM AND FOR A MOMENT, KEVIN’S FINGERS SEEMED TO TENSE AROUND HIS GLASS. RIght above the two of them, a mistletoe had been placed. Who the fuck hangs mistletoe in the damn kitchen? Maybe a feeble attempt to avoid people swapping spit all over the house. “Know what that means, right?” Men. Women. Old or young. Kevin couldn’t be bothered by such technicalities.
