Song Review: John Prine & Kelsey Waldon - “Love at the Five & Dime”
It’s a shame John Prine and Kelsey Waldon didn’t get more chances to sing together because his ravaged voice dances beautifully with her twangy warble from the long ago.
The pair’s recording of “Love at the Five & Dime” is confirmation of the chemistry first demonstrated with 2019’s “Kentucky Means Paradise.” It’s out to preview the various artists’ collection More than a Whisper: Celebrating the Music of Nanci Griffith.
It’s a corny country song. But Prine, who died in 2020, and Waldon, who is signed to his Oh Boy Records, add depth as they with alternate verses and come together on the chorus.
Out Sept. 22, More than a Whisper also includes contributions from Shawn Colvin, Iris Dement, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Sarah Jarosz, Lyle Lovett and Kathy Mattea, Todd Snider, Billy Strings and Molly Tuttle, Aaron Lee Tasjan and others.
Grade card: John Prine & Kelsey Waldon - “Love at the Five & Dime” - B

You usually skipped the office Christmas party. It wasn’t that you hated your co-workers per se, just that you preferred to keep your work life and personal life separate. The last thing you wanted after working with your team 8 hours a day, 11 and a half months a year, was to spend an evening with them at one of their homes. You wanted to stay home, eat Christmas cookies, and watch all three versions of The Grinch.
Then they hired Shawn. You’d never paid attention to the temps they’d hired before- they were all plain types in thick-rimmed glasses and sky blue button-up shirts, whose idea of an interesting day was ordering their latte with full fat milk instead of semi-skimmed.
Shawn was different- he showed up to work every day in a jet black button-up, signet rings on every finger. You’d called him over to walk him through a few reports one day and spent half the demonstration trying not to look at his rings and wonder what each stood for- there was a calavera with intricate detailing in silver and gold on his middle (giving death the middle finger? bold for a Monday morning); a sparrow engraved on his right ring finger, and a quote you couldn’t make out engraved on his left pinky.
You tried and failed to ignore the fact that his wedding finger- on both hands- was bare. Interesting.
“Hey, you going to that Christmas thing?” He’d caught you earlier in the break room by the coffee machine.
“The White Elephant?” You shrugged. “I don’t usually, but maybe this year. Are you?”
There was something behind his blue eyes, but he kept his hands in his pockets. “Yeah. Hope I see you there.”
“You probably will.” You grinned, the decision made for you. Even if that meant skipping the rest of your lunch break and picking up some shitty last-minute gift for the Dirty Santa game.
At work, the White Elephant portion of the company party was a legend every year- one you’d been happy to miss. Everyone else worried about FOMO while you enjoyed ROMO- the Relief of Missing Out on grabbing some random, useless item and shoving it in the bottom of your closet until the next year when you released it back into the wild at the next party.
You ducked out of the office and headed to the nearest supermarket, looking up and down every junk-aisle until you found something: a jet black ashtray with silver studs. Ordinarily it wouldn’t have stood out, but something about the dark porcelain reminded you of Shawn.
God, you needed to stop thinking like that. He’d be out of the company after the New Year, and you’d never see him again- that would be that. No more mysterious rings on long, intriguing fingers. Absolutely no more catching a faint whiff of leather whenever he leaned over your desk to point at something on your computer screen.
You could live with that. You had for years. This time next year, you’d be at home with store-bought Christmas cookies and The Grinch, the way things had always been. Shawn would be along with all the other Christmas decorations by the 1st of January. Fine.
That didn’t stop your heart beating like a bongo when you knocked on Kathy’s door.
Kathy ran the finance department, meaning that half the people here would be from teams you didn’t know, or who considered marketing a waste of money and space. Maybe exchanging gifts with your mortal enemies would get you into the Christmas spirit… Especially if Shawn was there.
He was already sitting in Kathy’s living room, silently watching the rest of the strangers having a conversation- knowing finance, it was probably about tax write-offs for the holidays. The gift of interest rates dropping from 12% to 11.5%.
The seat next to him was empty, so you grabbed it, sending Shawn a quick smile. He nodded a greeting before turning his attention back to the conversation, but your eyes couldn’t help but take him in like a tall glass of eggnog.
Shawn rarely dressed like other employees, and tonight was no exception. Where everyone else was wearing red, silver or gold (or a hideous Christmas cardigan) he was dressed head-to-toe in jet black. Casual black jeans and boots, a black biker jacket that made his shoulders look that much broader, and slicked-back blonde hair. He’d missed a spot at the back. You could just make out a curl in the straightness, flattened but still sticking out like an imperfection.
That just made him more perfect. Dammit. You grabbed a glass of mulled wine and hoped it went straight to your head. Anything to forget your stupid crush on the temp.
Everyone gathered in the living room. A spread of chairs formed a circle around Kathy’s coffee table, where everyone added a gift.
“Champagne?” Kathy offered, popping open a bottle and pouring everyone a full glass.
You and Shawn took the seats closest to the door, and everyone else settled down too.
“Thank you all for coming!” Kathy clapped her hands together, creating an awkward silence that made you want to throw back the entire glass of champagne. “Sorry for the small space, but I think it’s nice that we can all be so cozy together at this time of year. And who knows, maybe next year we can put our heads together and host this party in the Bahamas, right Finance?”
Nobody laughed. Shawn cracked a smirk. Kathy cleared her throat and sat down. “Anyway, cheers everyone!”
“Cheers!” You clinked glasses with Shawn first, but he avoided looking at you. He was never like this in the office; when you sat in your cubicle his blue eyes seemed to burn into you, always searching for answers to questions he wasn’t asking out loud. Maybe that was just your over-active imagination at play.
“Why don’t we start the white elephant gift exchange?” Kathy’s smile was tight and unfaltering as her gaze swept over the room. “Did everyone get assigned a number when they came in?”
Everyone held up a slip of paper- you were 9, Shawn was 2.
“Great! Does everyone know how this game works?”
“Remind me again?” Shawn asked.
“When your number is called, you grab a gift.”
“But we can steal, right?” That was Jeff from accounting, number 5.
“Exactamundo!” Kathy nodded a little too enthusiastically- either she was irrationally nervous or she’d been hitting the mulled wine too hard. Either way, you tensed as the game began.
Janette from marketing was number 1, and she picked a red paper bag from the pile, excitedly pulling out a scented candle. Great, her house reeks. You swore you could smell her husband’s dirty socks from across the room, and he wasn’t even in the room.
“A candle!” Janette gasped in delight, blissfully nose-blind to the situation. “I love it!”
“Alright, who’s next?”
Shawn raised his hand and stood over the table, playfully waving his hands. You held your hand as he came within an inch of grabbing your present- only to pick the one right next to it.
Don’t feel disappointed, you told the sinking feeling in your stomach, It’s just a stupid game of Dirty Santa.
Shawn pulled a light blue piece of porcelain out of the golden paper bag, his jaw dropping open. If he were a cartoon, this would have been the exact moment his eyes popped out of his head.
“Oh, nice!” He exclaimed. “A sweet ashtray! Oh, you know I was just saying I needed something like this.”
You winced at the joy in his voice. First rule of White Elephant: if you like your gift, never show it. Still, you couldn’t ignore the infectious warmth that spread across your chest as Shawn carried on, words tumbling out of him in an excitement you’d never seen from him at the office.
“I’m going to use this as a catchall by the front door of my place, so when I get home from a long day I can put all my rings and bracelets and playing cards and stuff from my pockets right here. To whoever got this, thank you. For real. I’m going to cherish this forever, it’s perfect.”
No you won’t, you thought, catching eyes with Ava from the legal branch of the finance department. A ruthless woman in a red-and-white Christmas jumper, with the glow of at least a dozen Patrick Batemans in her eye as she looked at Shawn’s ashtray, which he was hugging to his chest, a goofy smile on his face.
“Let’s move on.” Ava flicked her brown hair over her shoulder and looked around the room, but you knew she’d already made her decision. “I’m number three. I’m going to steal- I like Shawn’s gift too.”
Ava reached over and took the ashtray from Shawn before he had time to react- or prepare for the loss of a lifetime, if the look in his eyes was to be believed.
The smile evaporated instantly- a fact which hit you with a pang- as Shawn’s brows knit together.
“So what, now I just don’t get a gift?”
“No, Shawn, you can go back to the unopen gifts, or you can steal.” There was a desperate edge to Kathy’s voice, as if she’d start shaking like a chihuahua if Shawn didn’t play along.
He wasn’t playing along.
“Okay, I’ll steal my gift back.” Shawn attempted to grab the ashtray out of Ava’s hands, but her red talons fastened tighter around the ceramic.
“No, I don’t think you can do that.” Ava delivered her line with what would have been an Oscar-worthy performance, if she weren’t a total she-devil. You’d caught her in the break room a dozen times before, taking the last cup of coffee without refilling the machine.  Satan.
You liked Shawn's brand of rebel, but not rule-breakers like Ava. There was a clear difference, even though Kathy was quick to intervene with a meek,
“You have to grab someone else’s gift.”
“That’s not fair,” Shawn was smiling, but his eyes were cold. “That- you shouldn’t be able to do that, that’s like, mean. That’s mean as hell.”
Welcome to the finance team, You thought, drinking the last of your champagne and noting that you and Austin were the only non-numbers people left at the party. Outnumbered, outplanned.
“You know what, Ava?” Shawn was growling now, looking at the ashtray in Ava’s hands instead of her face. “You are a wicked little woman.”
Oh. That phrase did something to you. Or maybe it was the combination of mulled wine, champagne and eggnog- you weren’t drunk, but you sure as hell weren’t sober enough to play your usual quiet role.
“Shawn?”
His head whipped around to face you, mouth open like he was preparing to say something until you grabbed his hand and picked your present up from the table, shoving it into Shawn’s arms. “Thank you for a lovely evening, Kathy. But we have an early morning deadline tomorrow so I think Shawn and I should make haste now.”
Make haste? Maybe the eggnog was stronger than you thought.
Shawn started heading for the door without saying anything, but you stopped, turned on your heel, and grabbed the ashtray out of Ava’s hands.
“By the way, I’m stealing this. See you in the Wednesday catch-up.”
Was the look on Ava’s face worth the complaint you’d be getting from HR? Maybe not.
Were the hearts in Shawn’s eyes worth it? Absolutely.
He was silent until you shut Kathy’s front door behind you. Then he asked,
“Why’d you do that? I don’t even know you.”
“You will.” You smacked yourself internally. “I mean, we work on the same team. You have a couple weeks left to get to know me. Um, anyway, Ava was asking for it. Woman never refills the coffee machine.”
Shawn’s jaw tensed. “That’s her?”
You nodded. “Everyone else refills it but she just takes whatever’s left and waits for someone else to do the hard work. She doesn’t deserve-” You looked at the cheap piece-of-shit sky blue ashtray in your hands- “A present of this caliber.”
“Right.” Shawn was looking at you now, and you were shocked at the sudden darkness in his blue eyes. “Can I drive you home, or do you have a ride?”
You shook your head. “I was gonna take the bus.”
“At this time of night?” He raised his eyebrows. “Come on.”
You shouldn’t have been surprised when he led you to a jet black motorcycle parked not too far down the street. It was exactly Shawn’s style, and knowing you’d get to sit on the back of it, breeze in your hair, hands wrapped tight around his middle…
Yeah, this was better than The Grinch.
If the hint of leather and musk was sexy in the office, the full scent of it in your nostrils as Shawn straddled the bike was enough to leave your knees weak. Did people born after 1899 still swoon? Maybe you’d restart the trend.
The distracting scent was interrupted as he turned and slipped a black helmet over your head, sealing you into something grittier- the leather smell of him was still there, mixed with sweat. Great, now I want to live in a helmet.
Shawn's body was firm under your arms, well-muscled in spite of the long office hours you both worked. Would it be creepy to splay your fingers across his stomach, feel the groove of every muscle?
Definitely. Fight that urge, you told yourself. It’s not worth the trip to HR.
You had to yell to direct him to your place, a small apartment on the outskirts of the city. The building wasn’t especially pretty from the outside, but rent was cheap and you didn’t have to worry about neighbors making any noise complaints- they blared techno music 24 hours a day, making it hard to hear yourself think without specialist equipment.
“This the place?” Shawn parked up and walked with you to the door.
“Yeah.” His scent lingered in your nostrils as you gathered the courage to look Shawn in the face. “Do you like hot chocolate?”
“Do I?” He grinned. “Is there anyone who doesn’t?”
“Come on in.” You held the door open and pressed the elevator button.
“You have marshmallows?”
“I wouldn’t invite a man up to my apartment if I didn’t have marshmallows.” Did you really just say that?
Shawn didn’t seem to mind, if the way his nose wrinkled in laughter was any indication. Of course. It wasn’t enough for him to be effortlessly sexy, he had to be effortlessly cute too.
Silence descended between the two of you in the elevator. If clinging to him for the past 20 minutes while the motorcycle swerved through city traffic wasn’t enough, now you were just a few feet away from him. Maybe you were one hot chocolate away from everything you’d been daydreaming about for the past few months. Dating, or casually banging the temp, wasn’t against company policy (you’d checked repeatedly since Shawn started), so what was the worst that could happen?
Muscles in Shawn’s neck twitched as he drank you in and gulped.
“You look really nice.”
“Do I?” You looked down. In all the commotion you hadn’t had time to buy anything christmassy for the party, settling for a tight red mini dress that came to just above your knees and matching heels. You’d hoped white leggings would make you look more christmassy, but you felt like a gigantic candy cane.
But looking into Shawn’s dark blue eyes, you realized that wasn’t such a bad thing. Not if he wanted to eat you up.
“Mmhmm.” He was trying too hard to sound noncommittal. You’d barely spoken outside of work, but one thing was obvious about Shawn: he wasn’t neutral about anything. The ashtray in your hand was just one example.
“Thanks.” You said, once the silence had dragged on a beat too long. The elevator dinged and you led him through the loud corridor to your apartment: a studio with just enough room for a bed, sofa and TV, with a corner kitchen overlooking it all. All three DVDs of The Grinch were laid out on the coffee table, but you hoped he wouldn’t notice those. You tucked them under the coffee table when he wasn't looking.
You made the hot chocolate while Shawn leaned against the kitchen counter with eyes that kept wandering across your body when he thought you weren’t looking. One serving of cream, marshmallows, and grated chocolate later, you were on the couch together. Inches apart. Living in a tiny studio never felt so good.
“I love your place.” Shawn smiled, licking whipped cream from his top lip. “Do I hear techno?”
“Yeah.” you rolled your eyes. “The neighbours are crazy for it. I think one of them is a DJ and the other one is deaf. They’re a match made in heaven.”
He laughed. “I don’t mind that kind of music.”
“What do you like?” You made a point of crossing your legs as you asked. Is this how people flirt?
His eyes flickered to your legs before he shook his head slightly.
“Don’t laugh.”
“Tell me.”
“Alright, I like… musicals. Hamilton, Hadestown, Mean Girls, I don’t care if it’s on Broadway or not. I just love them.”
You couldn’t help but snort in surprise.
“Hey, you said you wouldn’t laugh!”
“I’m sorry!” You took a sip of hot chocolate to hide another giggle. “That’s just not what I expected.”
“You expected metal and rock, didn’t you?”
You gestured at his leather biker jacket. “You kind of have the right look for that.”
“Haven’t you ever seen Grease?” He purposefully smoothed a hand over his hair, and suddenly Shawn made sense. A blonde Danny Zuko.
“You’re full of surprises.”
Shawn hummed in agreement as he sipped the hot chocolate. “So are you. I wasn’t expecting you to… come to the rescue at that party. Thanks again, by the way.”
You shrugged. “I’ve been wanting to stick it to Ava for years. Thank you for the opportunity.”
“Still.” An easygoing, maybe nervous, smile spread across his face like melted butter. “How can I make it up to you?”
“Forget about it, it’s nothing.” You almost missed the way his smile faltered slightly. He’s playing at something.
“I don’t think I wanna forget about it.”
“No?” The sugar from the hot chocolate started to buzz through your veins. “Maybe I should make you.”
His eyes widened, but darkened as well. Lust. You knew it well, mainly from working so close to Shawn for so long. Your breathing quickened as he put his mug on the coffee table. Is he leaving? Had you pushed it too far too fast?
“Okay.” Shawn studied you. “How are you going to do that?”
In for a penny…
“You still have the present I picked up from Kathy's, right?”
He frowned and reached for the bag. “Yeah?”
“Open it.” You shifted closer to Shawn as he picked the jet black ashtray out of the bag.
His eyes went wide, a confused smile lighting up his features. “Jet black? My favorite color? This is even more badass than the last one!”
You nodded, leaning closer to his ear to whisper, “I’m going to take that ashtray and put it right here.” You took it from his hands and placed it on the coffee table.
“What else?” Shawn breathed, and you could see something twitch in his pants. It took everything in you to fight a smirk.
“I’m going to take your hands, I’m going to suck the rings off of each finger and spit them into that goddamn catch-all. Then, I’m going to let you fuck me.”
Silence. You fought to keep your breathing even, not daring to lean back and look him in the eye. Oh god, he really had just come up for hot chocolate, hadn’t he? Shawn was-
Oh.
While you were busy fighting within yourself, Shawn took your face in his hands and kissed you. There was nothing innocent about this kiss; it was all tongue and tooth as you moved to sit on top of him, his hands on your lower back.
He drank your breath in like a man parched, and it dawned on you Shawn must have been fighting the same attraction you’d been, for who knows how long? You swallowed his growl when you ground your hips against the hardness in his pants.
“You keep doing that, I won’t last long.” He hissed in your ear, moving to devour your neck.
You moaned in return as his hands grabbed your hips, helping you move in a rhythm that had the two of you out of breath in moments.
Shawn wore his dark blue button-up mostly undone, and it didn’t take you long to undo the rest of the buttons, giving you access to his torso. He wasn’t overly muscled, but he was lean enough to have a clear outline of his abs, a V shape disappearing into his jeans. You drank him in like a tall glass of eggnog before leaning down to attack his neck, nibbling at his ear until his hands tightened on your hips, tilting you back and forth.
Shawn’s plush lips were pink, swollen from kissing as he reached a hand towards your face.
Now you could read the inscription on one signet ring. It was big and heavy-looking, full of tiny writing.
When stormy weather comes around
It was made in heaven
When sunny skies break through behind the clouds
I wish it could last forever
“Queen.” You said, toying with the ring on his pinky finger. “Interesting.”
Before he could reply, you took his finger into your mouth and sucked, swirling your tongue around the tip before pulling at it with your teeth. It gave way easily. True to your word, you spat it into the ashtray in a way that had Shawn’s breath hitching in the back of his throat.
His middle finger, the one with the calavera, tasted of mint and sugar, like the peppermint popcorn from Kathy’s party. Once the ring was free you sat back and opened your mouth for Shawn to see the skull balanced on your tongue before you dropped it too in the ashtray.
“Fuck, you’re hot.” He growled as you moved on to the final ring, the one with the sparrow.
How was it possible that seeing his hands bare was hotter than seeing most men fully naked?
Shawn shrugged off his leather jacket and shirt, leaving him bare from the waist up.
“I think you’re overdressed.” He smirked, hands reaching for the zip at the back of your dress. You stood up to step out of it, leaving you in thigh-high white stockings and a set of red lace underwear that matched your heels.
He drank you in like a work of art before standing, taking your head in both hands, and capturing your lips with his. He tasted like eggnog and something stronger- maybe whiskey, which had also been a staple at the party. You were just glad you were both clearly sober enough to consent.
In fact, Shawn was sober enough to pick you up, your legs wrapping tight around his waist in an instant.
“Which way to the bedroom?”
"Shawn, it's a studio. The bed's right behind you. The light is by the fridge.”
“Good. I want to see you.” He devoured your neck on the way, pressing you against the wall so he could turn the light on before continuing the journey.
You bounced on the bed as he set you down and crawled up your body. Heat radiated from every line of muscle, and you traced them all as you stroked his arms and down his back, pulling him close enough that it was hard to breathe. Hard to think.
Not that you were interested in thoughts- the sensations he could pull from your neck with his lips alone were mind-numbing, especially when he licked his way up your neck to whisper,
“Can I taste you, beautiful?”
You could only nod and watch as he kissed down your body, pushing down your bra to give his tongue access to your nipples, learning every movement that pulled a fresh cry from your lips and repeating it again on your other breast.
His fingers hooked around your panties and pulled them down. Shawn kept eye contact with you as he shoved them into his pocket, earning a groan from you. Were you into that? When it came to Shawn, yes.
From the first hot press of his tongue to your clit, one thing was obvious: he loved to eat. And he was good at it. Even the expel of air as he smirked against you had your hips grinding, pleading for more friction.
Then one of those damned fingers slid into you, curling, searching for the right spot, and your own hands flew to his slicked-back hair, ruffling it, pulling. Shawn groaned into you at the sensation, speeding up his ministrations.
“I- I need-” You gasped, not knowing how to finish your sentence when he was between your legs, your panties in his pocket, your red heels no doubt leaving marks on his back.
You came. The growl that left Shawn’s throat as he attacked your clit with his tongue was nothing short of brutal, and you loved it. Pled with him not to stop. Clawed at his hair, tightened your thighs around his head as he milked your orgasm for all it was worth.
When it was over and your clit was at its most sensitive, he blew cold air there, causing a whimper to leave your lips.
Shawn climbed back up your body to give you a searing kiss. His lips were salty, his tongue anything but gentle as it toyed with yours.
“Fuck me.” You wrapped your legs around him and ground your hips to his.
He smirked before wrapping his hands around your back and flipping the two of you over so you were straddling him before he retorted,
“Ride me.”
Your shaking hands made quick work of his belt, unzipping his black jeans and pulling down his boxers. When Shawn’s cock sprang free, you were almost nervous. He was bigger than the men you’d been with in the past, but when you wrapped your fingers around his cock and gave a few experimental pumps his eyes flew back in his head.
I can work with that.
His fingers toyed with the white lace of your stockings as you began to ride him. His cock was incredible, hitting a new place with every thrust. With one hand on your hip and the other on your breast, Shawn started fucking up into you in time with your bounces.
Every fluid movement of your hips was an experiment as you set a pace that was all for Shawn: when he groaned, you tightened around him. Every sensation was tense, building up to something incredible.
Words got caught in your throat, pushed to the side by loud moans that somehow said more than words ever could. Your hips sped in time with Shawn’s thrusts as you locked eyes.
The climax hit you both at once, Shawn calling out your name as he unloaded into you and you collapsed on top of him, feeling utterly satisfied for the first time in… well, ever. You’d thought you knew what it was like to be satisfied before, but this was something else. You couldn’t move for several long minutes.
Shawn’s hands stroked your back as you both came down from the high. He pressed a gentle kiss to the top of your head. “Hey, beautiful.”
“Hey.”
“How was that for you?”
“Earth-shattering. You?”
“Dazzling. I can see why you haven’t worn these to the office before-” He tapped your heels- “I’d never get any work done. Nobody would.”
You hummed against him, tiredness pulling at your eyes. You winced as you moved off of him, suddenly sore from the roughness of the night’s actions, just from the size of him.
Shawn shot you a shy smile as he buttoned his jeans once more. “Hey, did I see The Grinch under your coffee table?”
Heat rushed to your face. “Yeah. I usually watch it every year.”
“Could I join you?”
You shared a warm smile. “I’d like that.”

5 Book Recs Based on Your Favorite Nostalgic Halloween Movie!🎃
Tumblr media
I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite parts of October is watching all the classic spooky season movies I grew up with. It brings back all those fond memories of childhood fall festivities, Halloween costume planning, and the joy of filling up your candy bucket while trick-or-treating (even if you had to fight your mom about wearing a jacket with your costume because it was too cold). If you’re in the middle of your yearly Halloween movie binge or haven’t had time because of the hot new books dropping recently, here are some ghoulish book recommendations based on some of our favorite nostalgic Halloween movies!
If you like Hocus Pocus (1993), then you might like Dead Man’s Float
Tumblr media
While there might not be a big musical number led by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy in the middle of Dead Man’s Float, this story will surely leave you gasping for air. There is no doubt that Hocus Pocus is one of the most classic Halloween movies of all time, as the dubious Max unleashes the iconic Sanderson sisters to enact their revenge on Salem. Shawn Sarles' haunting YA horror novel follows this same hair-raising idea, except this time, a seemingly harmless prank unleashes a ghost with unfinished business and intent on finding its killer. If you’re in the mood for a more frightening version of the classic Hocus Pocus story, I recommend you start reading Dead Man’s Float now!
If you like Halloweentown (1998), then you might like Shadow Coven
Tumblr media
Halloweentown is well-known for its inclusion of literally all things Halloween and its empowering story of a young witch who will go to extreme lengths to save her family and the world from an evil power. Similarly, S. Isabelle’s second installment in The Witchery series, Shadow Coven, centers around a group of witches who must defeat magical and mundane threats to save themselves and their coven forever. While there might not be any friendly skeleton cab drivers, Shadow Coven includes some kick-butt witches just like Marnie and her family that will surely have you reaching for the spellbook this Halloween! Start reading now!
If you like Casper (1995), then you might like Sixteen Souls
Tumblr media
Casper the Friendly Ghost is a staple nostalgic character during the Halloween season. How could you not love the sweet and cute little ghost who falls for the girl who moves into the very mansion he’s haunting? Fans of the movie Casper will have no problem jumping into the spooky yet swoony YA debut Sixteen Souls by Rosie Talbot. This ghostly tale is about sixteen-year-old Charlie, who gets dragged into hunting down the cause behind the mysterious disappearances of several famous spirits by an irritating yet charming new ghost seer in town. If you like Beetlejuice (1988), then you might like Beholder
Tumblr media
Whether you became a fan by watching the 1988 film with Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder or the quirky modern-day musical, there is no denying that Beetlejuice has cemented itself as one of the most iconic ghost stories of all time. While Ryan La Sala’s Beholder is much more mysterious and sinister than the joke-filled dark humor of Beetlejuice that we’re used to, both stories explore a world where dark, evil powers must be stopped before they have the chance to take over fully—one just comes in a pin-striped suit with green hair. Start reading BEHOLDER!
If you like Scooby Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost (1999), then you might like At the Speed of Lies
Tumblr media
It goes without saying that any Scooby-Doo! film or episode is a year-round classic. But during the Halloween season especially, there is something even more thrilling about watching the gang from Mystery Inc. kick some monster butt. This undefeatable group of friends is no stranger to solving their town’s mysteries; still, Quinn Calvet from Cindy L. Otis’ At the Speed of Lies certainly wasn’t expecting to get swept into the mystifying chaos of her town’s latest disappearances. Fans of Scooby-Doo! will love this modern twist on mystery solving that we’ve all grown to love, thanks to Velma, Daphne, Fred, Shaggy, and Scooby. And while Quinn might be well on her way to becoming the “it girl” of The Whine, her town’s growing social media platform, I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a shout-out to the original it girls–The Hex Girls from Scooby-Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost. Start reading At the Speed of Lies!

Inside the Avalanche’s Cup celebration: ‘All these champions skating around’
Tumblr media
From The Athletic
TAMPA, Fla. — Standing on the ice at Amalie Arena, soaking in sweat and tears and the emotions that come with reaching hockey’s peak, Gabriel Landeskog harkened back to his draft day, back to when he was a clean-shaven kid with a full NHL career ahead of him. He told reporters at the time that he had a photo of Peter Forsberg and the 2001 Avalanche Stanley Cup team hanging from his bedroom wall in Stockholm. His goal — his dream — was to be in a picture like that one day.
On Sunday night, he got his wish.
After Colorado’s 2-1 victory in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final, Landeskog looked around him, surveying his jubilant teammates.
“I’m just so happy to see all these champions skating around,” he said.
As captain, Landeskog was the first to hoist the Stanley Cup. And as much as he’d longed to touch the trophy, he couldn’t wait to give it away. He’d made a promise during harder times — before Cale Makar and Presidents’ Trophy contention — to teammate Erik Johnson, his close friend and the longest-tenured Avalanche player. Be ready, he had said. Because whatever day the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup, he’d hand Johnson the trophy first.
“If that doesn’t give you motivation, I don’t know what does,” Johnson said. “Who would’ve thought? Five years ago, dead last in the NHL. Now we’re Stanley Cup champions.”
As the final horn sounded, Johnson and Nathan MacKinnon met, tackling each other away from the rest of the main group. They rolled around, embracing one another. Both were on the 2016-17 team that had one of the worst seasons of the NHL’s salary-cap era, logging only 48 points in the standings — more than 20 worse than the next-closest team. And in the post-win celebration, the remaining players from that roster — Landeskog, Johnson, MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and J.T. Compher — gathered for a picture near center ice, finally as victorious as could be.
“It’s special no matter how you win this thing,” Compher said. “But in the few years since that season, seeing all the work that’s gone in…”
MacKinnon, who scored the game-tying goal in the second period Sunday, found his parents, Graham and Kathy, as soon as they walked onto the ice. He cried in his dad’s arms. “I kind of get flashbacks to my whole childhood, my whole life,” said the center, who finished second to Makar in Conn Smythe Trophy voting. “It feels amazing.”

Makar, the defenseman who moves the puck like a yo-yo and skates like a gazelle, completed a rare combo with the Norris Trophy and Conn Smythe this season. And he had help: His mom, Laura, had ditched her lucky outfit after the Avalanche’s Game 5 loss, and she ate kale salads ahead of games 4 and 6, both Colorado victories. A mother’s touch works wonders.
Laura wasn’t alone in attendance. Cale’s dad, Gary, was there, too, as well as Taylor, Cale’s younger brother and a 2021 Avalanche seventh-round draft pick.
“Growing up, playing mini-sticks when we were little kids, getting in fights, stuff like that,” Taylor said. “It’s everything he’s always wanted, what our family has wanted.”
Around the ice, players FaceTimed with loved ones who couldn’t make the trip. Andre Burakovsky shared a moment on the phone with his dad, Robert, and Bowen Byram grinned into a screen at his sister, Jamie. “I’ll drink your share of the beer,” their dad, Shawn, joked.
Johnson accidentally knocked Sportsnet contributor Ken Wiebe’s recorder out of his hands while reaching for a family member’s phone. He apologized as Wiebe jokingly called for a two-minute roughing penalty.
Darren Helm cried while holding his daughter. Makar stood arm-in-arm with Devon Toews, his defensive partner. Andrew Cogliano’s mom pulled Jack Johnson in for a hug. Erik Johnson said he needed a beer. (And there was plenty to come later in the evening.)
There was Nazem Kadri, his thumb still bandaged. He broke it in multiple places but found a way to turn a six-week recovery into two. Burakovsky battled through a broken ankle to play the first two Stanley Cup Final games but was finally kept out by a thumb injury. Cogliano, who has played 1,140 regular-season games, waiting and hoping for this moment, played with pins in his broken middle finger. Worth it?
“Fuckin’ right,” he said.
To reach their goal, the Avalanche had to knock off the two-time-defending Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning. And after taking the lead in the second period, Colorado executed a clinical third, limiting Tampa Bay to only two shots on goal and generating a plethora of scoring chances the other way. With a clear at the final horn, the game ended. The Avalanche had won.
“We went out there and probably played one of the most perfect clinching third periods in the history of hockey,” Byram said.
Added goalie Darcy Kuemper, who finished the night with 22 saves: “That was some of the best hockey I’ve ever watched. To have the Cup on the line and come out like we did and not give up everything, it was a special effort.”
General manager Joe Sakic, the team’s architect, posed for pictures with his family, and he said hello to Toews’ parents, Werner and Tammy, who thanked him for taking on a chance on their son in a 2020 trade from the New York Islanders. It’s a deal Sakic would do a million times over: He paid only two second-round picks for Toews, and the defenseman has finished 11th and eighth in Norris Trophy voting the past two years, respectively.
“I don’t know if it’s really soaked in yet,” Werner said. “It’s incredible. It’s a hard road.”
A little before 2 a.m. Eastern, the Cup left the building in the hands of a jubilant Landeskog, whose mood was perhaps buoyed by a couple of drinks. A procession of teammates walked with him, including Josh Manson, carrying an NHL championship belt over his shoulder, and Makar with Oakley goggles — champagne protection — on his forehead. “Post that on Twitter!” Byram yelled, wearing an unbuttoned shirt and suit jacket while double-fisting champagne bottles. Landeskog showed off the trophy to the media members still at the rink working, with one message to share.
“We’re taking it back to Denver!”
Valeri Nichushkin and MacKinnon were among the last to leave. Nichushkin, dealing with a suspected foot injury, got a ride from a stadium worker on a flatbed dolly usually used for transporting crates, a bottle in his left hand. MacKinnon walked behind him, laughing at his teammate, victorious at last.

Album Review: Various Artists - More than a Whisper: Celebrating the Music of Nanci Griffith
Though she does not sing on More than a Whisper, Nanci Griffith’s voice can be heard across the 14 songs that make up the various-artists’ tribute to the late singer-songwriter, who died in 2021.
Subtitled Celebrating the Music of Nanci Griffith, Whisper does exactly that, opening with Sarah Jarosz’s version of “You Can’t Go Home Again” and closing an hour later with the War and Treaty’s rendition of “From a Distance.”
In between these cuts, the artists, going all the way back to Emmylou Harris on “Love Wore a Halo (Back Before the War)” and coming all the way up to Billy Strings and Molly Tuttle doing “Listen to the Radio,” are careful to follow the contours of Griffith’s compositions. And while they all bring their own, distinct voices and instrumental capabilities to the studio, they all also leave room for listeners to hear Griffith’s own voice echoing through time, resulting in the rare such compilation that hangs together despite its disparate contributors.
Among the highlights are John Prine and Kelsey Waldon’s “Love at the Five & Dime,” Steve Earle’s “It’s a Hard Life Wherever You Go,” Todd Snider’s “Ford Econoline” and Iris DeMent’s “Banks of the Pontchartrain.” Lyle Lovett and Kathy Mattea, Brandy Clark, Shawn Colvin, Ida Mae, Aaron Lee Tasjan and Mary Gauthier also appear.

Maya Hart
Tumblr media
So when we think of Maya Hart our mind is responsible for reminding us that she is Riley's best friend, but even the series knows that she is much more than that, which is why this section will not cover To Riley Matthews because although we love her, there is already an entire series focused on her relationship with Maya.
Tumblr media
Headcanons of her with the other characters
In order according to wiki Girlmeetsworld.fandom.com
Tumblr media
Katy Hart:
Tumblr media
All of her art exhibitions have been specially dedicated to her, according to Maya: “For the woman who has sacrificed my entire life so that I have more than what she has obtained,Mom, you don't know how much I loved you before I could understand you, and now that I do, I love you more than we both could imagine."
Kathy has the main spot in the exhibition and whether or not she will appear in any painting or piece of art, once she started earning enough money to take her mother to ireland
Gammy Hart
Tumblr media
Maya loves to Spend time with her and listen to her talk, she always has something interesting to tell her,she shows her memories and doesn't care if Maya checks them from time to time without telling her, she has given him some of her things, her granddaughter takes good care of them, when she comes back from the street she always treats her something To her grandmo.
Shawn Hunter
Tumblr media
They do daddy-daughter things, watch TV together (any program the other wants), have breakfast, cook, go shopping, make fun of the fact that he can't help her with her homework, fish, try everything. The things that have happened and will happen for the simple fact that both are growing in the company they always wanted.
Farkle Minkus
Tumblr media
Farkle always goes over his speeches with the girls, Riley is always positive, never critical, Maya couldn't care less but she still encourages him to be briefer, clearer, gives him ideas to be less nervous, and summarize a little, He is not ashamed to admit that thanks to the blonde's advice he has been closer to beating Smackle
Lucas Friar
Tumblr media
Deep down, Maya is drawn to Lucas' Texan life (as if she had seen Toy Story and had always wanted to Watch the Woody's Roundup). So although she makes fun, she is the most dedicated during her visit to Texas, feeding the horses, taking care of the farm, learning to dance like them, loving what they eat, their activities, Lucas He taught her how to ride and some tricks, and to see if Happiness convinced him that even if the boys couldn't come, he would make sure to bring Maya to Texas.
Isadora Smackle
Tumblr media
Maya is Smackle's assistant in science, chemistry and technology fairs and homework projects, why? Because it turns out that the girl likes it...yes, Maya Hart likes those subjects because Fun explosions are best along with 'toys' that work,Riley is her best friend and favorite companion. But with Smackle in a controlled manner, chaos happens.
Cory Matthews
One day Maya arrived when they were going to buy at the market so they recruited her, unlike Riley who aligned herself with Topanga where everything is strictly according to the list, instead on the Matthews side Auggie and her had fun, They can take whatever they want, the cart works as a cart, and the food samples are never enough ,they also had it and from that day on Cory personally made sure that she accompanied them
“Let's go to the market, baby."
Topanga Matthews
Tumblr media
Maya loves her outfits, so she got her some. Riley tells her that she wears them at home all the time, and went so far as to participate in school plays just to wear them in public.
Zay Babineaux
Tumblr media
It's a little strange to say and understand But the girl is his trainer (Basically she makes him do the same exercises as in school practice, but they have fun together) Furthermore She is like the president of the imaginary fan club and forces her friends to feel the spirit of the moment
“Move him, we're late!!” “And the t-shirts??, guys, don't make me nervous, where are the t-shirts??!" "I've been writing to you all week about them for this?!! “...No way, Friar buy some and make sure they have Zay's number, Minkus Get the camera ready, separate our place and those of the rest, and Matthews... the food is on you”“Listen to me friend, I'm not going to repeat it twice, it's our friend's game, it's our place, our school, and not even your mom would pay to see them, if I were you I'd run away little muscles"
Auggie Matthews
Tumblr media
If for some reason the Matthews have to go out without him, Maya will stay with him, and they both love that, Auggie says she is the best Nanny in the world after Mrs. Svorski.
Ava Morgensterns
Tumblr media
Maya has practically become her older sister, sometimes Ava's mother asks her to help her with her homework.
Eric Matthews
Tumblr media
She and Riley love going to his office and helping him with his important papers. Maya is his favorite secretary since they both consider that they share the same academic neuron.
Joshua Matthews
Tumblr media
They begin to philosophize about literally anything (Maya plays, Josh takes it more seriously).
PD:I feel like Maya would be the type that doesn't want to get married, and Josh doesn't see a problem with it, maybe a small meaningful anti-traditional ceremony before moving in together (Not all couples get married Disney,Show that!!!
I hope you enjoyed the insight with Maya Hart

A Real Social Security Office Gave Me A Flyer With A Scam Phone Number On It
Scammers have Infiltrated a Social Security Administration Building in New York, Imperiling Your Personal Information.
— Shawn Musgrave | March 17, 2024 | The Intercept
Tumblr media
A flyer handed out at the Harlem office of the Social Security Administration in late February. The number printed for the Manhattan office was actually for a scam line. Photo: Shawn Musgrave/The Intercept
“We Need To Let You Know You Have Been Selected For $100 in Rewards.”
It was a cheery automated message, not what I expected when I called the number for the Social Security Administration’s Primary office in Manhattan. The message went on: “Simply press 1 now to be connected to a live agent and claim your gift today.”
I double-checked the number, which a Social Security employee had just given me at the agency’s local office in Harlem in late February. I needed to replace a lost card, which was a service only offered at certain locations, the agent told me. He slid me a flyer and circled the contact information for the office in the Financial District in Manhattan.
“You can call this number to try making an appointment,” the agent told me.
“There are a ton of scams that use government agencies. But nothing like this.”
Still sitting in the lobby of the Harlem building, I dialed the number a couple more times, and each time reached a different grifter: I was eligible for another $100 gift card to Walmart, then help getting “free insurance.” I just had to hand over my name and address, to “confirm you’re eligible,” one scammer said. These are prototypical phone scam scripts.
In a recent experimental study, researchers posing as employees of a fictious government agency convinced more than 16 percent of older adult participants to hand over personal information, including their Social Security numbers. In another experiment, with college students, more than a third of participants gave out personally identifying information to scammers.
Highly unusual about the flyer in my hands, however, was that a very real government agency had given it to me.
“There are a ton of scams that use government agencies,” said Kathy Stokes, director of fraud prevention at the AARP’s Fraud Watch Network, such as “pretending to be the SSA and saying there’s a problem with your number or that your card has been suspended. But nothing like this.”
“I find that very concerning,” Stokes told The Intercept. “I can’t imagine how that would happen other than that someone on the inside being involved in it.”
When I brought the flyer back into the Harlem office that day, the same window agent called the number with me on speakerphone. When an automated message about $100 gift cards began to play, his eyes widened with confusion and he quickly hung up. “I need to tell a manager about this,” he said.
“I Can’t Imagine How That Would Happen Other Than That Someone On The Inside Being Involved In It.”
Reached for this story, Social Security employees at the Harlem office did not answer detailed questions about how this version of the flyer came into existence. “We were made aware” of the scam number on the flyer, one ticket agent said, “and that’s why we stopped giving those out.”
On closer inspection, the scam phone number was off by a single digit from the real direct line to the Manhattan Social Security office, and the phone numbers for other offices were legitimate. Stokes noted that the scam flyer had some hallmarks of amateurish doctoring, like inconsistent formatting and fonts. (I found pictures of similar documents posted to nongovernment websites — including Yelp and personal blog posts about the Social Security process — which the posters claimed were from other Social Security offices in the NYC area. Unlike the scam flyer, none of these versions included the phone numbers for individual offices.)
“This looks like some guy made this in the FedEx down the street and somehow got this in the pile of things to be given out,” Stokes said, instead of more a “sophisticated” scheme.
The scammers on the other end of the line were “pretty unsophisticated” too, noted Adam Doupé, a professor at Arizona State University who studies phone scams, after I showed him the flyer and he called the number himself.
“I wonder if the scammers themselves actually know what they have,” he said. “Imagine you are a scammer and realize that your number is printed on an official government document. How would you make the most money from this opportunity?”
Unable to let it go, I called the scam line several more times from different phone numbers to see what the scammers were after. Above all, they wanted my full name and address, which can be all a fraudster needs to pull off a change-of-address scam.
Only one scammer pretended to work at the Social Security Administration and said they could help me get a replacement card. They asked for my full name and address, but not my Social Security number.
A few scammers offered $100 in various forms as pretext to hand over my info. A couple said I could have a free “medical alert device,” and another claimed to offer “ID protection services.” Only one asked for a credit card number in addition to my address, on the pretext that it was needed to “activate” a gift card.
Amateur or not, this scam number still managed to sneak into a pile of handouts for at least one busy Social Security office in New York City. The Social Security inspector general’s office, which investigates phone scams, is looking into how this happened, according to Rebecca Rose, a press officer for the inspector general. But Rose would not give details about the inquiry, including whether the agency knows how long this version of the handout was given out or if other offices beside Harlem were also affected.
The inspector general’s office was unaware of prior instances of scam flyers at government offices. Instead, “the most common technique criminals use regarding fake numbers is to spoof an SSA number or caller ID, so that it appears the call is coming from SSA,” Rose said.
Reached via the actual phone number for the Manhattan office, a Social Security employee, who did not give a name, said numerous people had called about the scam number. “We’re trying to figure out who created this flyer.”

Only Memories and Remnants of the Riverside Restaurant Remain
Tumblr media
(Publisher's Note: With the demolition of the former Wheeling Inn pending, we at LEDE News are re-publishing this article concerning what remains inside the dilapidated structure, including the former Riverside Restaurant 7 lounge.) She recalls frozen drinks were a favorite during the days she was a bartender at the former Riverside Lounge and Restaurant in the 1990s. Pina coladas, strawberry daiquiris, and loaded margaritas were a few of the top sells while Lynne Walton was behind the bar at the establishment that was inside the Best Western Wheeling Inn. Walton began working at the Riverside in 1994, and at that time, country music’s most popular still were playing inside a nearby theatre called the Capitol Music Hall each and every Saturday night in downtown Wheeling. The hotel’s 80-plus rooms consistently were full of out-of-towners, and local residents frequented the establishment, too, because of the terrific views of the historic Wheeling Suspension Bridge and of the Ohio River. Or maybe it was the frozen drinks. “My favorite times there were when I was behind the bar with Mick (Webster), Julie (Thames), Kathy (Sutton), and Terri (Tennant). That really was the most fun because we worked really well together, and the place was always hopping. It was really popular,” Walton reported. “The place was always full of people from the Wheeling area and with the people who were staying at the hotel.
Tumblr media
The reason for the name of the establishment is obvious once walking out on its deck area. “That was almost 35 years ago but I can still remember how much of a blast the place was,” she explained. “And it seemed like everything I was making was with a blender. I think those blenders were going from the time I walked in for work until I walked out. One after another, the frozen drink was the thing back then just like martinis are now. Back then, though, everyone wanted something frozen with a bunch of whipped cream and a cherry on top.” The structure that housed the former Wheeling Inn was purchased a few weeks ago by the Wheeling Convention and Visitors Bureau for $1.7 million after the business was deemed a nuisance in May 2022 by Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger. The hotel was constructed in 1962, and the property was bought in 2005 by NALINI LLC for $1 million. That company never operated the restaurant or the lounge and the areas since have suffered heavy water damage. “And what a shame, too, because the place was always crowded, and the money you would make back then was crazy, it really was,” Walton said. “And the banquets were great, too, because once they closed Fabulous Fannies, they made that whole area for banquets, and that money was nuts, too. I think the only bad part about working at the Riverside was how far away the kitchen was. It seemed like it was a half-mile away some nights. “George Boury and the managers at the Riverside were fortunate because a lot of their employees stayed for as long as I can remember. Most of them were still there even after I left to start a family,” she said. “It was a well-run place, though, and there was money to be made every time you went to work, so it’s no wonder the employees stayed around as long as they did.”

Currently, there is standing water resting on tarps inside the former restaurants.
The Food and The Fun
George Boury joined his two brothers, Ellis and Mike, to create the legendary Elby’s Family Restaurant, an empire that grew from the first eatery on National Road in Wheeling to 73 locations in four states. The company also had a hotel in State College, Pa., Fabulous Fannie’s in the Wheeling Inn, and a stake in TJ’s Sports Garden. But it was the Riverside Restaurant and Lounge that allowed George to create a place for fine dining and nightlife. “People loved the food there, too. I really don’t remember anyone complaining about it at all,” Walton said. “But to be honest, I really don’t remember much of what I ate there because we always seemed to be too busy to sit down and actually eat a meal. It was more like picking at something in between this and that every shift.

The Riverside’s bar is still intact today but water damage has ruined much of the infrastructure. “But it was a place for special dinners for special occasions, and I can’t tell you how many people have told me that it was their favorite place to go in the valley. So many people would come up from Glen Dale and Moundsville, and they would come down from Steubenville, and so on,” she said. “I do remember that everyone loved the burgers there, and they enjoyed all of the entrees, too. We served a lot of burgers at the bar, and people would compare the food to where they were from in the area.” The menu, Walton recalled, was completely different than what most people recognized as offerings from an Elby’s. “I know that was important to George. He told me that many times during those three years,” she said. “And when people said something to him about that, he was really proud of it. I know he was a big fan of Ernie’s Esquire and a lot of people compared the menu to what they served up on the hill (in Bethlehem). “Just like everyone else my age who grew up in this area, I was very familiar with Elby’s. The Big Boy, the Slim Jim, and that stuff, and the Riverside had nothing like that on the menu. It was strictly upper level,” Walton remembered. “That’s probably why we were always crowded, and not just on the weekends.

The current state of the bar inside the Riverside Lounge would not pass a Health Department inspection.
The Best of Times
When purchased in the late 1970s, the Wheeling Inn was called “The Downtowner,” but two years’ worth of interior and exterior improvements later and the new Best Western franchise opened to much fanfare. A decade later, Walton moved from her home in Moundsville to Wheeling Island, and initially, she was employed by two different restaurants in the same building. First, it was Applejack’s that was located at 329 N. York Street before the restaurant was transformed into La Docs. That restaurant closed in early 1994. Several years later, Golden Chopsticks opened for operation at the same address. “I worked at a couple of places in Wheeling before I started at the Riverside, and I met George Boury back then because he always came into those places during the evenings,” Walton recalled. “So, I talked to him a lot and once the place where I was working closed, I didn’t know where to go next. I love bartending because it was a terrific night job so I wanted to find a new place.
Tumblr media
The roof for the Riverside deck has leaked for many years. “But I knew George Boury so I asked him and he said yes,” she said. “The funny thing was, though, that when I went to the Riverside that first day, George wanted me to work in every other position first before I went behind the bar. So, I was the hostess, I waited tables, I made tossed salads, and everything else before I started bartending. It made sense, too, because you usually have to do everything when you work in a place like that back then.” Walton has bartended in a plethora of places since and she still is employed part-time in a couple of establishments today, but the Riverside Restaurant and Lounge always will be one of her all-time favorites. “I have bartended in a lot of places here in the valley, but the Riverside was definitely one of my favorites because of the people, the money, and because it was really a lot of fun. Some places frown on taking time with customers and things like that, but not at the Riverside. George and the managers encouraged it,” Walton explained. “And the people from out of town? That’s why they came to Wheeling … to have fun. “Those Jamboree weekends were nuts, just nuts, and we got so slammed in the Riverside that there were some nights when I wouldn’t get home until 4-4:30 a.m. because those country music fans would just want to stay up as late as possible on those Saturday nights,” she added. “I do miss those days because the Riverside was the place to be back then. Now, everyone in town can’t wait to see that eyesore come down and go away, and that’s just so sad.”
