A Summer in a Pioneer’s Neckerchief by Katerina Silvanova and Yelena Malisova (Лето в Пионерском Галстуке, написанный Катериной Сильвановой и Еленой Малисовой) - English translation
This post from @sovietpostcards brought to my attention a book causing somewhat of a controversy in Russia, about a pioneer (basically the Soviet version of the Scouts) and his camp counsellor/leader falling in love at summer camp in the 80s, and I figured that other people, like myself, would be interested in reading it, but as far as I know, there’s no English translation, so I thought it would be a fun summer project to try and translate it myself! I’ll update this post with links to each chapters as I go along.
DISCLAIMER: I am not a professional translator, nor am I perfectly fluent in Russian; there are bound to be mistakes and rough parts, I’m just doing this for fun and hoping other people are interested.

Moscow libraries have received a government-issued list of books that must be written off and “recycled,” due to content that runs against the grain of Russia’s new law against “LGBT propaganda.” This information was published by the journalist and literary critic Sergey Lebedenko, on Telegram.
The memo was distributed to libraries on Friday, December 16. It lists 53 titles, all to be written off and deleted from electronic library catalogs — including books by John Boyne, Michael Cunningham, Stephen Fry, Jean Genet, Haruki Murakami, Sarah Waters, as well as numerous Russian writers — Eduard Limonov, Vasily Rozanov, Oxana Vasyakina, and others.
The directive to recycle these books, writes Lebedenko, probably means that in the end they will be simply burned. While final decisions are left to library directors, libraries are expected to report on their compliance with the memo.
Earlier this month, Meduza reported that Moscow libraries were hiding copies of books written by authors designated “foreign agents” or writing against the official grain, either by criticizing the Ukraine war or by embracing the so-called “non-traditional relationships.”
After the new anti-LGBT censorship law took effect, Russia’s larger bookstore chains stopped displaying books like Summer in a Pioneer Tie and What the Swift Doesn’t Say by Elena Malisova and Katerina Silvanova.

The Teen Romance Novel That Russia’s Politicians Just Can’t Bear
Tumblr media
By Elisabeth Schimpfössl and Felix Sandalov
In the summer of 1986, Yury, a shy 16-year-old, arrives at a Young Pioneer camp in Crimea, dreading the many dull weeks ahead of him. There’s only one thing that cheers him up: his group leader Volodya, a 19-year-old undergraduate. Slowly, the two boys fall in love. Against a backdrop of danger — if their clandestine relationship is found out, they could face a five-year prison sentence — they tentatively discover their sexuality. After the summer, their lives drift apart. They don’t see each other for 20 years until Yury, spurred on by the discovery of a hidden cache of love letters, goes on a search to find Volodya.
That’s the plot of “Summer in a Pioneer Tie,” the debut young adult novel by Elena Malisova and Katerina Silvanova. Initially published on a fan-fiction site, the novel was discovered by Popcorn Books, an imprint focusing on queer fiction. (Popcorn is one of two imprints at an independent publisher; one of us, Mr. Sandalov, runs the other, which is editorially separate.) Since its release in late 2021, the book has been a sensation: It sold over 200,000 copies in the first six months and generated exceptional hype. On TikTok, where teenage fans have organized flash mobs and designed all manner of merchandise, novel-related posts have attracted more than 250 million views.
The book is more than a breakout hit. It is also the catalyst for the latest legislative assault on L.G.B.T.Q. rights in Russia.

Don't Press the Button
I read on social media yesterday that Russian ebook giant LitRes had added a button on its website for readers who want to file a complaint against any of the books it offers for violating Russian laws. To see whether this was true, I punched up the most popular recent Russian book among readers of this website, Katerina Silvanova and Elena Malisova’s runaway LGBTQ+ romance bestseller A Summer in…

Lena and Katya, Authors of “Summer in a Young Pioneer’s Tie”
Lena Malisova and Katya Silvanova More than 200 thousand copies have been sold — an absolute bestseller. Its authors, Katerina Silvanova and Elena Malisova, did not expect the novel to take off. In 2021, one of the readers of A Summer in a Young Pioneer’s Tie made a TikTok based on the book that went viral. “We had a wild number of views — it was surreal,” recalls Katya. A month after the…
