I would truly and genuinely enjoy this radio show even if they didn't play my song and say lovely things about it. Chris Cartwright is a wonderful host. He gave me my radio debut last year and continues to give us all lovely music every week.

Public Libraries Really Are Punk Rock
I think if anyone pays attention to this blog they'll see that I love rock and roll music and pop music and the different ways things branch off and end up everywhere. That probably makes me seem like I'm all over the place, but I'm not. For me, a love for music began with punk rock. I had a second cousin who blasted Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols at top volume in his car. I was 12. It was the scariest thing I ever heard in my life, but unlike most people in a little town a half hour away from the cities, I LOVED it. Like I loved Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's monster. I wanted more and I found it on public radio (KFAI) and in public libraries. My cousin started making me tapes. I started doing little things with my hair to slowly start telling the world that I'm a punk rocker. I started meeting other kids with similar interest and they got me into skateboarding. When you hear the Minutemen say " punk rock changed our lives " there's a reason why you hear Sublime sample that. From one generation to the next, punk rock changed our lives.
I'm autistic. When I was a kid, I was put in classes full of kids with all kinds of completely different learning disabilities. I couldn't do much when I was in my first few years of elementary school. I couldn't read. I could write like a first grader, maybe, when I was around 9 or 10.
Then two things happened at all most the same time. That Sex Pistols story I just told you and Storm from the X-Men got a mohawk.
She got that mohawk and I started to learn how to read. It sounds weird, but when I was 12 I wanted to be a black woman with a white mohawk. If you think that's messed up, well I still want to be a woman with a white mohawk. I'm ok with being white now, but just not a white guy. And I'm a coward. There aren't many people who know me that would describe me as normal, and I even came out as trans on Facebook and said I was going to see a gender therapist and I did and after being asked a lot of questions the therapist told me what I wanted to hear and I would be able to get HRT, but I need to see a councilor a few times. So, I haven't made an appointment. I am terrified of talking to a councilor, even though I thought that was what the gender therapist was for.
I'm getting off track, but the point is that came from Storm, a comic book character, who was the superhero that I wanted to be, because she was a punk rocker. That got me sounding out words and reading. That got me to a library, where I could look things up in catalogs and find them and check them out. The public library got me listening to The Replacements, Husker Du, X, Gang Of Four, Devo, The Suburbs, Dickies, The Clash, and more. I first heard Metallica when the library got a new record called Ride The Lightening.
Every one of those records would get me looking up news paper and magazine articles about the bands.
Now, there's this blog thing and I'm listening and looking up and seeing how it all happened and where it came from and then doing that again and again because if I don't, I will sink into a depression and maybe end up in a hospital. I think there are probably a lot of people out there doing this. Maybe not in the same way, but with the same intention. Autistic kids are known for stacking things. I doubt all autistic kids do it, and a hole lot of kids in general do it. That's why blocks are a popular toy.
This is a blog inspired by many things but the root of it is from an autistic, queercore kid who wishes they could be Storm.

i’m not very good at understanding people with thick accents, that really impacts me in my neighborhood since a lot of my neighbors are somali and speak english as a second language, so i’ve started listening to the somali english-language radio broadcast while im working. they play music i’ve never heard before! and they have these in-depth discussions about local politics. it’s great.

The Viking Bar’s most recent, and final, closing night happened in January 2018, amid a management dispute that saw the West Bank landmark shut down less than two years after a high-profile reopening. The true legacy of this 1905 venue, which opened as the Viking in 1959, was cemented with a sweaty 2006 show headlined by local legend Willie Murphy.
“The wake signaled an end to the days when Willie Murphy and friends crowded the small Viking stage and spilled onto the floor, making people get up and boogie on the old tile floor,” wrote historian Cyn Collins in the Twin Cities Daily Planet. “It also brought an end to the regular Friday night shows with the Front Porch Swinging Liquor Pigs and KFAI Radio’s ‘Jackson’s Juke Joint.’ We’ll miss the legendary Mardi Gras parties on Sundays, when Spider John Koerner entertained us with his foot-stomping old folk blues while we indulged in Marty Johnson’s grilled chicken and brats.”
On that final night of the original Viking, though, Murphy and his peers gave Minneapolis a night to remember. “Old and young, hippies and punks, activists and anarchists danced wildly on the benches, bartop, and floors throughout the packed bar,” reported Collins. “Many were dancing as they came in the door. The crowd grew wilder as the night went on, and even a fight or two even broke out — just like in the old days. Musicians and patrons poured inside and out, sharing their memories and grief at this loss, one of the few remaining posts of the historic West Bank music scene.”
We’re revisiting 15 unforgettable Minnesota concerts from the 15 years The Current has been on the air.

David Lawrence Grant. Writing Things That Matter.
If Minneapolis was a character in a play, it would be that best friend your other friends wonder why you hang with. You stay with him because there is something enduringly endearing about him, even though he disappoints. He has a good side that outweighs the bad. He’s dopey and dumb, but sweet and well-intentioned.
I grew up in DC, and loved Washington, but most days, if you ask me, I say…

“Fresh Fruit”, on KFAI, a Minneapolis noncommercial radio station, is the longest-running weekly queer radio show, on air since 1978. In honor of Pride, we talked to host Quinn Villagomez about social media, being an ally and why it’s not OK to say “Hey, ladies.”
Q: What are the do’s and don’ts of attending the Pride Festival?
A: The “do” is, of course, to go and to support and to learn about LGBT culture, to learn about the transgender community, things like that. Have a great time and be supportive.”
The don’t is you definitely need to be careful about pronouns. Instead of saying, “Hey, guys” or “Hey, ladies,” learn from people. Not everybody identifies as masculine and not everybody identifies as feminine.
You also have to be really sensitive about taking photos and posting things on social media because not everybody that goes to Pride is openly out to their family, friends or co-workers.
Q: How can someone be a respectful ally?
A: Being lesbian, being gay, being transgender or bisexual is not a phase, it’s part of our life. It’s who we are as people. I always try to encourage friends who are cisgender or are heterosexual to come to the events or listen to my radio show, just try to kind of understand my life and ask questions rather than labeling. I think that in our society today we are really quick to label. Also, the LGBT community is more likely to experience suicide and mental illness. So, it’s about educating and supporting and loving each other.
