“Nina …” Mick said. “Please don’t say that. I’m trying to explain to you why I wasn’t capable of being a father until now.” Nina shook her head. “If you were any kind of real parent, you would know that capable has nothing to do with it.” Mick frowned at her and sighed. “Do you think Mom felt capable of raising four children on her own? Holding her head up high when the whole world knew you’d left her, twice? Making all of the money, and doing all of the housework, and helping each of us with our homework? Making every single one of our birthdays special despite having no money and no time? Remembering that Jay likes chocolate cake with buttercream and Kit likes coconut cake and Hud likes yellow cake with chocolate frosting? Always having the perfect number of candles? “Do you think I felt capable of taking it all over after she fucking drowned? Do you think I felt capable of trying to pay all the bills and still scraping up enough money for coconut at the fucking Malibu Mart? Do you think I felt capable of holding each one of these guys as they woke up in the middle of the night remembering that they had essentially been orphaned? Do you think I wanted to drop out of high school so I could do it all? That I wanted to be twenty-five years old without a high school diploma?” Mick flinched as he heard this, and when Nina saw the pinched look on his face, it pissed her off. “I didn’t feel capable of any of that! But did that matter? Of course not. So I’ve gotten up every single day since Mom died—and even a lot of the days before that—and I have done what needed to be done. Capable is a question I never had the luxury of asking. Because my family needed me. And unlike you, I understand how important that is.” “Nina—” Mick tried to interject. “You think I want to be here selling photos of my ass and living on this fucking cliff? No, I don’t. I want to be in Portugal somewhere living in a shack on the beach, riding waves and eating the catch of the day. But I don’t. I stay here. That’s what it means to be a family. Staying. Not just strolling into a party after midnight expecting a hug.” “Nina, you’re right. I’m a weak—” “Must be nice. To be able to be weak. I wouldn’t know.”

My ranking of all the husbands from The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo from best to worst, excluding Celia because it’s obvious that she was the true love of Evelyn’s life.
1.) Harry: Self explanatory. Great guy. Great dad. Great friend. 10/10
2.) Rex: He was a pretty good guy too. Maybe not as close of a friend to Evelyn as Harry was, but still a nice guy. I would love to know more about him and Joy Nathan though. They sound cute together. 10/10
3.) Robert: Nice guy and we love a good ally. I thought it was nice that he helped Connor find her passion for Wall Street and finance. Pretty chill but also nothing too special at the same time. 9/10
4.) Ernie: Also not too special. Boring dude. Also generally creeped me out for marrying someone who was a child (and before everyone comes at me about Evelyn lying about her age, she said she was sixteen and he still went “cool”). I’m happy he found love with Betty and had his eight kids though. 7/10
5.) Max: This is the point on my list where the husbands get shittier and shittier and my rankings are going to get meaner. Max was simply a dick. Nothing else. As Evelyn said, he only married her for something to brag about instead of seeing her as a valuable person, or just a person in general. Also, trying to put her? Yeah, severely dislike him. 5/10
6.) Don: What. A. Fucking. Shithead. He was for abusing Evelyn and then Ruby. But I will say, as someone who’s passionate about psychology and an advocate for breaking the stigma of people who struggle with addiction and alcoholism, his somewhat redemption and sobriety near the end made me feel sorry for him and I was glad to see him better. Sure, I said he used to be a shithead and there’s no excuse for that, but I also wouldn’t kill him if I knew him in real life. 3/10
7.) Mick: I cannot express my hatred for this dude. Shitty husband, shitty friend, shitty father. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo only gives a glimpse of his jackassery, but Malibu Rising paints a better picture of what a shithead he is. —♾/10

I love Taylor Jenkins Reid but this quote hurts me so much because it's so fucking true "June continued to plead to no avail but the truth was, she was only a little surprised. She was a woman after all. Living in a world created by men. And she had long known that assholes protect their own. They are faithful to no one but surprisingly protective of each other" (Malibu Rising, 105).

This boy needed someone to love him. And she could do that. That would be a very easy thing for her to do.
“I will love you,” June told him. And she did.

Taylor Jenkins Reid.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Synopsis -_-
Four famous siblings throw an epic party to celebrate the end of the summer. But over the course of twenty-four hours, their lives will change forever.
Malibu: August, 1983. It’s the day of Nina Riva’s annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together, the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over—especially as the offspring of the legendary singer, Mick Riva.
The only person not looking forward to the party of the year is Nina herself, who never wanted to be the center of attention, and who has also just been very publicly abandoned by her pro tennis player husband. Oh, and maybe Hud—because it is long past time to confess something to the brother from whom he’s been inseparable since birth.
Jay, on the other hand, is counting the minutes until nightfall, when the girl he can’t stop thinking about promised she’ll be there.
And Kit has a couple secrets of her own—including a guest she invited without consulting anyone.
By midnight the party will be completely out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family’s generations will all come bubbling to the surface.
Malibu Rising is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: the night they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them... and what they will leave behind.
Review ^_^
I love this book so much!
I have a lot to say, those little things are crashing inside my head, and now, let me just tell you, if you like summer, beach, surfing, heart broke, wild parties brutal inhuman acts, some actors and media personalities becoming crazy, an older sister who literallly was the main pillar of an almost broken family, best brother relationship, an asshole who can not hold his dick on his fucking pants, a family, a sweet, marvellous relationship of siblings, an asshole husband and most importantly, major plot twists, then what the hell you're doing? GO RUN AND READ THIS BOOK!!!
Taylor Jenkins Reid never disappointed me, ever! Her books.... It's a really out of the world kinda thing. She just slays on this book. Her writing is totally different and unique. She knows the assignment.
In this book, the characters say so much that it has lots to take, but ill try to make it short.
• Nina: she's the main character. And she is the best sister. However, her decision wasn't for her. Her entire life, all she did was take care of her siblings. And im so happy about what she did at last. She deserves it.
• Kit: she's badass. I like that about her. I love how she says everything that comes to her mind. She just doesn't give a fuck about what other people think about her actions. She cool.
• Hud: this man, is just awesome. Throughout the book, he just showed me, how a man can treat a woman. He's a comforting character. <33 him.
• Jay: he's good, I don't have anything specific to say about him. However, Jay and Hud's relationship was out of the world. They really meant for each other. They are like brother soulmates. ( if that even exists)
•June: this woman didn't deserve what she had her whole life. *shaking head sadly*
• Mick: you know, I don't want to talk about Mick. If he burns in hell, I don't really care much. He can go fuck himself.
Btw, other people like Carrie Soto ( I really love her boldness, can't wait to read her book) Branden ( fuck him ) Casey ( she's pretty good. I <33 ed her). Tarine ( she's a good best friend) all of them were needed in this book. They might not be into many parts, but who cares? These characters were interesting.
So, that's what I actually wanted to say about this book. I love this book so much.

I finally read Malibu Rising. How does TJR manage to make me care so deeply about every single character in a book where our 4 mains don’t even begin to scratch the surface?
I am in love with how she writes women.
Nina Riva. Probably my favourite protagonist this year. What a complete breath of complex & insecure & absolute good fresh air in a story filled with ambiguously asshole-ish people. I want to be like her and learn like her. I will love her forever.
Kit Riva. My honorary little sister. I care about her as if she were a real person. I want her to live her life freely. I know she’ll kick ass at it. And oh how I hope we haven’t seen the last of her yet.
June Costa Riva. The embodiment of how complete devotion can become destructive. I didn’t understand her and I hated her and then I didn’t.
Honorable mention for Tuesday Hendricks. With a name like that you can’t be anything but awesome, and I feel like there is so much more to discover under her skin. If ever there was a pick for TJR’s next story subject, she would be mine.
Lastly, all men are trash, but we been knew. Except Ricky Esposito, who gets a pass because he has done nothing wrong, ever, in his life, and I know this, and I love him.

@wildkissed sent “i just like you. i like spending time with you. you don't owe me anything. nina for kit”
“really?” kit asked. even years later, she couldn’t help but compare herself to all of her siblings. hud, nina, and jay all seemed to know what they were doing and were extremely successful. yeah nina had gone through a divorce recently, but she held her head high and still dropped everything for her siblings. kit was just discovering that she probably didn’t like guys at all and had no idea how to tell people, least of all her siblings. “thank you.”
